The American Film Institute (AFI) unveiled its list of the ten greatest movies in ten different American film genres during a three-hour special television event that aired Tuesday night on CBS. A jury of film industry leaders collectively selected the flicks thay represent the very best in the animation, science-fiction, fantasy, romantic comedy, gangster, epic, sports, western, courtroom drama and mystery genres. Hosts for the telecast included Jessica Alba, Sean Astin, Gabriel Byrne, Kirk Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Quentin Tarantino, Sigourney Weaver and James Woods.
To compile the final list, AFI distributed a ballot with 500 nominated movies (50 per genre) to a jury of more than 1,500 film artists including directors, screenwriters, actors, editors, cinematographers, critics and historians.
