Disney/Pixar’s Oscar-winning Ratatouille and Walt Disney Studios’ partially animated Enchanted nabbed top awards at the 34th Annual Saturn Awards, a presentation of The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. Ratatouille won Best Animated Film and writer/director Brad Bird’s screenplay took Best Writing. Enchanted won Best Picture in the Fantasy category and garnered a Best Actress win for star Amy Adams and Best Music for Alan Menken.
Other film honorees include Warner Bros. 300, which Best won Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film and Best Direction (Zack Snyder). Best Special Effects went to Scott Farrar, Scott Benza, Russell Earl and John Frazier for DreamWorks’ and Paramount’s Transformers.
On the television side, ABC’s Lost was the big winner, taking Best Network Television Series and Best Actor for Matthew Fox. Meanwhile, FOX’s animated Star Wars spoof Family Guy: Blue Harvest was named Best Presentation on Television
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army) received the prestigious George Pal Memorial Award for his work in film, while producers Robert Halmi Sr. and Robert Halmi Jr. accepted the Life Career Award for their successful body of work that includes a number of CG-laden fantasy telepics. Director Matt Reeves was recognized with the Filmmakers Showcase Award for his work in directing Paramount’s successful giant monster movie, Cloverfield, which was named Best Science-Fiction Film.
The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films was founded in 1972 to honor and recognize genre entertainment. The organization has honored in person such legendary icons as Boris Karloff, Rod Serling, Gene Roddenberry, Ray Bradbury, Fritz Lang, William Friedkin, Vincent Price, James Cameron, Ray Harryhausen and Steven Spielberg.
