The School of Visual Arts in New York will host Ink Plots, a new exhibition of comic book work that traces the development of the art form over the past four decades through selections from faculty and work from alumni.
Faculty members Marshall Arisman and Thomas Woodruff are curators of the exhibition, which features animation, original art, books and prints by more than 100 artists. It is set to run Oct. 8 to Nov. 6 at the Visual Arts Gallery at 601 W. 26th St., 15th floor. A reception is scheduled for Oct. 14 from 6-8 p.m.
‘Ink Plots pays tribute to some of the most important artists responsible for the invention and development of the graphic novel,’ says Arisman. ‘The years many of these artists spent teaching at SVA has greatly influenced the present generation of graphic novelists.’
Current and former SVA faculty members participating in or having art displayed in the exhibition include Sal Amendola, R.O. Blechman, Will Eisner, Tom Gill, Edward Gorey, Burne Hogarth, Klaus Janson, Frances Jetter, Harvey Kurtzman, Keith Mayerson, David Mazzucchelli, Mark Newgarden, David Sandlin, Walter Simonson and Art Spiegelman. Participating alumni include Russell Braun, Sungyoon Choi, Erik Craddock, Pascal Dizin, Nathan Fox, June Kim, Bill Plympton, Nate Powell, Lauren Redniss, Dash Shaw, Koren Shadmi, Raina Telgemeier, Michael Townsend, Steve Uy and Sara Varon.
Related events include a benefit cocktail party hosted by The Alumni Society of School of Visual Arts, set for Oct. 14 from 7-10 p.m. at Midtown Loft and Terrace. Tickets cost $250 with $100 tickets available to SVA alumni and the proceeds will fund a scholarship for cartooning and illustration students at SVA.
