Canuck Animator Wins Aussie Festival’s Top Prize

Canadian animator Dave Barton Thomas has won the top prize in an Australian animation contest with his short film Seven Year Twitch.

Barton won $20,000 in Australian currency (about $18,000 U.S.).

The 44-year-old animator’s credits include a long stint at Cuppa Coffee directing on such series as Crashbox, Henry’s World and Celebrity Deathmatch. Most recently, he has directed the stop-motion animated holiday special A Miser Brothers’ Christmas and episodes of Glenn Martin, DDS.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the currently unemployed Thomas beat out 75 entries to claim the top prize in the Sydney Opera House’s Graphic Animation Festival.

His minute-long short features a beleaguered office worker who decides to seize the day after realizing he’s been working in his job for seven years. The short can be seen at http://media.theage.com.au/entertainment/at-the-house/graphic-animation-competition-1776772.html.
