In addition to ordering the previously announced pilot for a yet-untitled animated series starring Larry the Cable Guy (Cars), Comedy Central has inked a presentation deal for a new show starring popular stand-up comedian Jo Koy. The untitled project will offer animation, along with sketch and stand-up comedy featuring a racially diverse ensemble cast.
Jo Koy got his start playing comedy clubs in Las Vegas and became a top act at Catch a Rising Star at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. He has since made numerous appearances on BET’s Comic View and Showtime at the Apollo, and has opened for Dave Chappelle, Mike Epps and Snoop Dogg. Currently touring the lucrative college circuit, Koy will exec produce the Comedy Central show with Laugh Factory founder Jamie Masada should it get a series order.
Comedy Central’s last effort to combine animation and stand-up comedy was the brilliant-but-cancelled 2004 series Shorties Watching Shorties. Hosted by two babies voiced by comedians Nick DiPaolo and Patrice O’Neal, the show featured comedy bits brought to life through Flash by toon house Augenblick Studios.
Created and written by Larry the Cable Guy, Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow, the half-hour animated Larry the Cable Guy pilot has the southern comedian voicing the role of a ne’er-do-well who co-owns a cable television station with a classy woman who is at odds with his bizarre, low-brow programming choices. Cohen, Sokolow and J.P. Williams will exec produce the pilot with the comedian, who rose to fame as part of the Blue Collar Comedy tours and specials on comedy Central.
