Daily Variety reports that a recent epispode of FOX’s animated comedy The Simpsons has evoked political controversy in Argentina, where it is set to air this summer on Telefe and Canal Fox. The 10th installment of season 19 was pirated and posted on YouTube, infuriating many Argentinians with the notion that former Argentine president Juan Peron was a ruthless dictator.
In the episode, Carl Carlson says of Peron, ‘When he disappeared you, you stayed disappeared,’ referring the disappearance of 30,000 citizens that has acutally been blamed on a military dictatorship that emerged after Peron’s time in office. Bar parton Lenny Leonard then chimes in with ‘Of course, his wife was Madonna.’ The singer played Eva Peron in the filmed viersion of the musical Evita.
Lorenzo Pepe, secretary general of the National Institute of Juan Peron, has reportedly implored national broadcasting regulator Comfer to censor the episode. That is unlikely to happen since the show is so popular in Argentina, as it is im many countries around the world.
