Sci Fi Channel to Morph Into SyFy

The Sci Fi Channel is changing its name to SyFy in a network-wide rebranding effort that will kick off in July.

The network also will adopt a new tagline, ‘Imagine Greater,’ according to The Hollywood Reporter. The channel will continue to air programming in the genres of sci-fi and fantasy, while trying to extend its audience and its image beyond spaceships and aliens to more broadly defined storytelling.

The change also solves some marketing issues, such as the inability to trademark the generic genre term Sci Fi, executives told the trade.
