Universal’s big-screen adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat pulled out a second consecutive weekend win at the North American box office over the five-day Thanksgiving holiday period. According to estimates, the comedy starring Mike Meyers clawed up another $25.6 million, just barely topping newcomer The Haunted Mansion. Disney’s latest theme park ride-inspired feature scared up an estimated $25.3 million for a close second place finish.
New Line’s Will Ferrell holiday comedy Elf is holding strong in week four with around $31 million, bringing its total past the $130 million mark. Warner Bros.’ supernatural thriller Gothika and Twentieth Century Fox’s seafaring actioner Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World round out the top five with around $18.2 million and $17.5 million respectively.
Paramount’s EFX-laden sci-fi flick Timeline debuted in 8th place with an estimated $12.6 million, and in its sixth week, Disney’s animated Brother Bear beat out four-week-old The Matrix Revolutions to round out the top 10 with an estimated $6.4 million and a cume of around $77.7 million.
Sony Pictures Classics released the animated French feature The Triplets of Belleville in six theaters in New York and Los Angeles, earning an estimated $150,400. Eager animation fans sought the film out to the tune of an impressive $25,607-per-theater average. The likely Academy Award contender will roll out in additional cities in the coming weeks.
