  • Crave Launches Its First Animated Project with Adult Comedy ‘Super Team Canada’

Crave Launches Its First Animated Project with Adult Comedy ‘Super Team Canada’

Canada’s bilingual TV and streaming service Crave announced today a 10-episode order for the new, half-hour adult animated comedy, Super Team Canada, its first toon commission. The Crave Original series is produced in partnership with Thunderbird Entertainment’s Atomic Cartoons (Max’s Young Love), and Will Arnett’s Electric Avenue (Snake Oil, Twisted Metal), and is currently in production with a premiere set for 2025.

Created by Canadian Emmy-winning writers — and brothers — Robert Cohen (HBO’s Somebody, Somewhere; The Big Bang Theory) and Joel H. Cohen (The Simpsons), the animated comedy focuses on the exploits of six, little-known Canadian superheroes trying to save the world from evil giant robots, an unemployed octopus, and needy hardware store clerks. The stakes are high for these stereotypically underdog Canadian super-unknowns, who are called in as Earth’s last resort when all the other superheroes have been destroyed.

“Distinctly Canadian original comedies have helped Crave build its brand, and with its sharp wit and clever Canadian-isms, Super Team Canada will fit right in,” said Justin Stockman, VP, Content Development & Programming, Bell Media. “This is the first animated series that Crave has commissioned, and we couldn’t ask for better partners than Will Arnett, Robert and Joel H. Cohen, Thunderbird Entertainment and Electric Avenue.”

Super Team Canada is a tongue-in-cheek love letter to the Great White North, but the comedy is universal and packs a punch,” said Matthew Berkowitz, Chief Creative Officer, Atomic Cartoons/Thunderbird and Thunderbird President. “As our first adult animated original, we couldn’t be prouder to team up with Canadian legends Rob, Joel, and Will. Crave has a rich history of delivering tremendous comedies and has been a fantastic partner to all of us.”

The series is produced by Thunderbird Entertainment’s Atomic Cartoons and Will Arnett’s Electric Avenue, in association with Bell Media’s Crave. Showrunner Robert Cohen serves as an executive producer along with Joel Cohen, Atomic/Thunderbird’s Jennifer Twiner McCarron, Matthew Berkowitz and Kristin Cummings, and Electric Avenue’s Will Arnett and Marc Forman.

For Bell Media’s Original Programming team: Rachel Goldstein-Couto is Head of Development; Alexis Mclaren is Development Executive; Chris Kelley is Sr. Production Executive; Sarah Fowlie is Head of Production; and Carlyn Klebuc is General Manager. Justin Stockman is Vice-President, Content Development & Programming, Bell Media and Karine Moses is Senior Vice President, Content Development & News and Vice Chair, Québec, Bell Media.

Thunderbird Distribution and Brands oversee global media and consumer products rights for the series.

Set in a magical world at the heart of the Great Forest, a steampunk fantasy world at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the series follows Klincus, a young orphan who has escaped from the factory of the wealthy industrialist Graylock. Klincus discovers the secret city of Frondosa, a refuge for little people, where he finds a new home and friends. The series explores the delicate balance between man and nature, with themes of adventure, friendship and difficult choices. It also represents the clash between modernity and tradition.

The series follow Dougie as he navigates the challenges of living a ‘normal’ teenage life while acting as a bridge between the human and animal worlds. At the same time, he explores the idea that his extraordinary ability can be both a curse and a great gift, with a humorous take on the challenges he faces.

  • ‘The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy’ Official Trailer Samples a Cutting Sci-Fi Comedy

‘The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy’ Official Trailer Samples a Cutting Sci-Fi Comedy

The Second Best Hospital in The Galaxy

Today, Prime Video released the trailer for the upcoming adult animated series The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy and announced the guest stars who will be scrubbing in for Season 1. Set to the boppy “Oh!” by The Linda Lindas, the preview gives audiences a first glimpse at the wild life forms and out-of-this-world challenges facing the crack medical team at this sci-fi comedy clinic.

From Emmy Award-winning creator Cirocco Dunlap and Maya Rudolph, Danielle Renfrew Behrens and Natasha Lyonne’s Animal Pictures, The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, with animation by Titmouse Studios, the series, which has a two-season order, will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide on February 23.

Tracee Ellis Ross (American Fiction, Black-ish),Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live, Fire Island), Abbi Jacobson (Broad City), Jay Ellis (Top Gun: Maverick, Insecure), Andrew Dismukes (Saturday Night Live), Lennon Parham (Minx), Gary Anthony Williams (Night Court) and John Waters (Hairspray) will all make appearances in the eight-episode debut season.

Fans are also in store for a family reunion this season, when Kieran Culkin, who voices Plowp, is joined by his real-life brothers, Macaulay Culkin, Rory Culkin, Christian Culkin and Shane Culkin.

The guest stars join previously announced series regulars Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne, Keke Palmer, Stephanie Hsu, Kieran Culkin and Sam Smith.

Synopsis: The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy follows Dr. Sleech and Dr. Klak — aliens, best friends and intergalactically renowned surgeons — as they tackle anxiety-eating parasites, illegal time loops and deep-space STIs.

In Season 1, doctors Sleech and Klak take on a highly dangerous and potentially groundbreaking case and, in doing so, put existence itself in jeopardy. Although considering their dismal personal lives, oblivion might be an improvement.

In a creator’s statement, Dunlop described her show: “Like a traditional procedural, every episode introduces a new sci-fi illness (e.g. run-of-the-mill diseases like getting stuck in a time loop, or an STI that turns you into the last person you slept with). While this show is funny and absurd, a sci-fi hospital is also a natural place to explore deeper emotional themes like mental illness, chosen & rejected family, and — of course — how to find clothes that fit when you turn into the last person you slept with.

“Mental illness, untimely death, and short legs run in my family, and you’ll find all of these at play throughout the first season. Additionally, you’ll watch extremely driven characters who are passionate about their careers as they try (and fail, and try, and fail) to love each other. I hope they offer some warmth, comfort and laughter in the face of life’s greatest joke: the ever-present nearness of death.”

Dunlap also serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer along with executive producers Rudolph, Behrens and Lyonne for Animal Pictures. Shauna McGarry, Shannon Prynoski, Chris Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio and Ben Kalina from Titmouse executive produce. Artist and animator Robin Eisenberg is co-producer and production designer.
