  • Cinesite Launches Immersive Division with New Short ‘Forsaken,’ Frameless Partnership

Cinesite Launches Immersive Division with New Short ‘Forsaken,’ Frameless Partnership

London-based VFX and animation studio Cinesite has launched a new division dedicated to next gen storytelling: Cinesite Immersive. The new branch debuts at speed, announcing its first film project, Forsaken, as well as a first-look deal with LBE company Frameless Creative.

Conceived and directed by award-winning filmmaker Roland Lane, produced and animated by Cinesite and supported by Greenpeace and Arts Council England, Forsaken is set to play on Outernet London’s floor to ceiling wrap around screens to highlight the mass extinction of life on Earth. Scientists have stated we are entering Earth’s sixth mass extinction event, with up to a million species at risk of being lost. This work takes inspiration from the Immortal Jellyfish, which is able to regenerate and begin its life cycle over again, to celebrate the beauty of the natural world — and couch a somber warning about the destruction of life on our planet.

“It’s true, a picture says a thousand words” said Cinesite London’s GM Joce Capper, “it’s great to see Cinesite’s recently established immersive division bringing Forsaken to life for Roland with the support of Greenpeace. We’re really proud of the message behind the animation and the quality of the visuals our artists have delivered for Outernet London. With the immersive entertainment industry growing rapidly Cinesite is expertly positioned to work with creative IP owners and brands to elevate the impact of their imagined worlds.”

The 8K piece will premiere on January 11 at Outernet London, Europe’s largest digital exhibition space, running daily at 11 a.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., free to the public. Greenpeace ambassadors will be on site January 13-14 and February 6-7 to inspire visitors to take action to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030 and to support a deep sea mining ban.

“Working with Cinesite to bring this idea to life has been a collaboration, in the truest sense of the word, and being able to utilize the world-class talent, creativity and expertise they have within their team has been a professional highlight for myself,” said Lane. “We worked closely together to apply the industry-leading CG and VFX capabilities they are renowned for to this most innovative of productions, crafting something ambitious for the immersive, one-of-a-kind Outernet venue, as we sought to combine visual art with pioneering tech. I’m delighted that we have been able to do the message behind the work justice, and use it to amplify the important work Greenpeace is doing in this area.”

Under the direction of Lane, Andrew McNamara supervised the Cinesite crew with creative support from Head of Assets & Visual Development Madeleine Scott-Spencer. The team worked closely with Roland to develop the overall design and CG build of the different stages of the life-cycle of the Immortal Jellyfish, crafting each stage of the narrative as well as blocking out general timings and movement to utilize the unique space effectively. The sequence was realized using Cinesite’s standard VFX and animation workflow rendering up to 8k per wall and resolving back to a 360 degree video at 50 frame per second which was then remapped onto each LED video wall to give a full immersive experience.

The Outernet experience features sound design by Gareth Fry and is accompanied by motion graphics featuring official stats from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, designed by Jonny Stopford.

    Rembrandt seascape - Frameless
    Rembrandt seascape – Frameless

In addition to Forsaken, Cinesite Immersive announced it has entered into a long-term partnership with Frameless Creative, the company behind the U.K.’s largest (and London’s first) permanent multi-sensory art experience. Following months of collaboration, two stunning artworks have been meticulously brought to life by visual effects artists for the first-time, enabling visitors to fully immerse themselves in these masterpieces.

The first piece to be added to the Frameless experience since launch last year, is a Rembrandt seascape which can now be seen in the venue’s largest gallery The World Around Us. Creating convincing real-world FX was vital to convey the power of the storm: simulation techniques were used to create controllable open water-wave height, frequency, fine spray and run off. Haze passes were added to backlight the water and spray.

“It was essential while doing that to respect and preserve the integrity of the original work of art,” noted Cinesite’s Capper. “It was far more than just a case of extending the environment. The team needed to extend the power, drama and spirit of the original, its nuances, lighting, mood and intent.”

The GM added, “Cinesite London is proud to be joining forces with Frameless and we look forward to working with the team on many more artworks. With the immersive entertainment industry valued at more than £45.7 billion in 2020 and growing rapidly Cinesite is expertly positioned to work with creative IP owners and brands to elevate the impact of their imagined worlds.”

The second addition is Monet’s Boat on the Seine near Jeufosse. Animators & FX artists enabled the 19th century impressionist masterpiece to live and breathe. From the rippling water and the paddling of the oars to the light shimmering on the water and butterflies fluttering across the meadows, the team was committed to bringing to life the serene scene from the Seine as if the artist was there.

“As one of Monet’s lesser known pieces, this artwork has always been for me a really underrated piece, and one that has rarely been spoken about, so we knew we’d be introducing many of our visitors to it for the first time,” explained Ryan Atwood, Frameless Creative Director. “We’ve been obsessing about retaining the nuances of the original from the serenity of the landscape to the incredible lighting effect that Monet achieved with his brushstrokes, all working together to provide a rare moment of reflection in an often-chaotic world. Front of mind throughout the creative process has been imagining just what Monet was thinking when he created this masterpiece and how he wanted the work to make people feel.”

Frameless Creative CEO Richard Relton added, “Working with Cinesite gives us the opportunity to take Frameless London to the next level, working with world-class masters of effects and plugging them into our space. This process has been about exploring how we can harness the film experience of the team to enhance our overall storytelling capabilities and the level of detail and effects in the artworks, really investing in the emotional connection our visitors can have with the work. The results are spectacular and this is just the start of what is an extremely exciting phase for Frameless, enabling us to take Hollywood style effects into the world of art.”

Cinesite is in discussions with other creative IP owners and brands to elevate the impact of their imagined worlds. Projects will span virtual, physical and mixed realities, location-based entertainment and theme park rides and attractions.

  • Tal Kantor’s Oscar-Shortlisted ‘Letter to a Pig’ Makes Online Debut

Tal Kantor’s Oscar-Shortlisted ‘Letter to a Pig’ Makes Online Debut

Today, film lovers are treated to the online, free-to-view release of Letter to a Pig, the Oscar shortlisted animated short from acclaimed Israeli animation filmmaker and visual artist Tal Kantor. Created with striking, largely monochrome traditional animation and live-action footage, the 16-minute work made its public digital debut through Short of the Week. (Watch it below.)

“It is hard to remember a recent film that tackles such a large, abstract, yet important theme as Letter to a Pig does, and it does so in a sophisticated way, by capturing how memory, reality, and the subconscious intertwine and influence each other,” comments Short of the Week curator Céline Roustan in her review. “And yet, the film is emotionally and intellectually legible too, as its honest and raw look at that emotionally charged topic is what makes the film so captivating and powerful. It is not only a great short, but an important one, too — a film we expect to be referenced and returned to in the coming years.”

Synopsis: A surreal journey into the dark subconscious of Israel’s collective memory, as seen through the eyes of a young school girl.

A Holocaust survivor writes a ‘thank you’ letter after the war, to the pig that saved his life. Following his testimony in the classroom, a young schoolgirl dreams a dark version of his story. In her subconscious, through the pig’s controversial figure she confuses good and bad, victim and victimizer, and confronts big questions about humanity, evil and compassion.

    Letter to a Pig

“The film is based on my personal experience as a young school girl, a memorable encounter I had with a Holocaust survivor and an unforgettable dream I had afterwards,” Kantor revealed in an interview conducted by Annecy Festival (watch here). “The film deals with the subject of memory, and the actual act of remembering — how do we perceive a memory in our minds? This is why the visuals in the film appear fragmented and incomplete, mimicking the mechanics of memory itself, where some elements we can remember very precisely and vividly, while others maintain quite elusive and blurry.”

Letter to a Pig is written and directed by Kantor, a graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. Her animated works are rendered in a distinct style, combining drawing, photography, video, painting and animation techniques. The short was produced by The Hive Studio (Israel) and Miyu Productions (France).

    Letter to a Pig

Prior to Letter to a Pig, which qualified for Oscars consideration by winning the Anima Grand Prix in addition to many other festival honors, Kantor created the animated short In Other Words (2016), which won 17 awards and was selected for more than 100 festivals around the world. She was also the animation art director for the documentary feature Advocate (2019), which won an Emmy Award and was also Oscar shortlisted.

Members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch will vote on the five nominees for Best Animated Short Film this month. Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 23. The 96th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.

  • PBS KIDS Ready to Introduce Young Viewers to ‘Lyla in the Loop’

PBS KIDS Ready to Introduce Young Viewers to ‘Lyla in the Loop’

A new 2D-animated series that aims to demonstrate problem-solving skills and the benefits of collaboration, Lyla in the Loop, is preparing for its big PBS KIDS debut on February 5.

Produced by Mighty Picnic and Pipeline Studios, the show for kids ages four to eight follows Lyla, a dynamic seven-year-old girl who lives in a big city with her close-knit family, fantastical blue sidekick St, and a host of relatable and quirky characters in her community, who use creative and strategic problem-solving and critical thinking skills to address a range of everyday problems together. The new series will debut in both English and Spanish.

“Lyla is curious and resourceful, and when it comes to figuring out solutions to everyday problems, she doesn’t give up, even when it takes several tries to get it right,” said Sara DeWitt, Senior Vice President and General Manager, PBS KIDS. “We know audiences will quickly be drawn to Lyla’s determination and can-do-attitude, and we’re excited to introduce this warm, funny, and smart series to our viewers.”

The show centers on Lyla and her family — mom Lydia and dad Louis, who run Loops Lunch diner; older twin sisters Liana and Louisa; younger brother Luke; and sidekick Stu, who always does exactly, literally, what was asked. With her family and best friend Everett Phan, Lyla tackles all sorts of challenges, from building her own homemade carnival games using repurposed materials, to riding along and lending a hand on the neighborhood trash and recycling route, to making a puppet show that recreates the Jamaican folktale, Anansi and the Goat. Lyla even helps her sister navigate the ethics of creating an art project with the help of Stu, showcasing an age-appropriate example of current questions surrounding the use of real-world AI tools.

In every adventure, Lyla and Stu introduce and explore foundational computational thinking concepts, leading to some comedic disasters and creative solutions, all while helping others in their community. The series will support a wide range of learners, modeling flexible approaches to finding and designing solutions, and creative self-expression.

“Kids are natural creative problem-solvers, experimenting and investigating the world around them with joyful curiosity,” says series creator and showrunner Dave Peth. “Lyla and the Loop celebrates and encourages kids and the grownups in their lives to recognize those innate abilities and see them as a powerful tool to help others, express themselves, and solve all kinds of problems in everyday life.”

The series pulls inspiration for its setting from Peth’s homebase of Philadelphia, and includes vocals by students from the public School District of Philadelphia in the series theme song, which was composed and performed by Grammy-nominated musician, Divinity Roxx.

“Finding stories and issues our audiences can relate to is paramount to creating the relatable world of Lyla Loops. When viewers can connect to and identify with characters, they’re more likely to absorb and retain the curriculum,” says series executive producer and head writer Fracaswell Hyman. “Working with a diverse group of writers who share authentic stories and interrelationships that ring true is where we find inspiration, humor, and heartfelt moments that may spark new ways of looking at ourselves and our friends.”

Story editor Monique D. Hall adds, “Kids who watch Lyla in the Loop will find themselves inspired by Lyla’s creativity, encouraged by her willingness to try new things (even if they don’t come easily to her), and entertained by all the fun messes she gets into — and out o — with her buddy, Stu!”

    Lyla in the Loop

Series producers will also work to create interactive episodes that incorporate AI-assisted conversation with the main character, Lyla. During the episodes, Lyla will ask the viewer questions, utilize responsive AI technology to understand what the viewer says, and respond accordingly. These episodes will undergo efficacy research to assess children’s learning and engagement and will be released to audiences at a later date.

Digital content for kids, families, and teachers, launching in tandem with the series, will reinforce its core messages, support play and experimentation with computational thinking skills and encourage creative expression.

Lyla in the Loop is created and executive produced by Emmy-winning producer Peth (Odd Squad, Peg + Cat, Scribbles and Ink, Design Squad), founder of media production and consulting company Mighty Picnic. Pipeline Studios, the Emmy-winning children’s content studio (Elinor Wonders Why, Alma’s Way, Bubble Guppies) is animating the series.

The voice cast is led by Liyou Abere as Lyla Loops, Izzy Woodbury as Stu, Isaac Ng as Lyla’s best friend Everett Phan, and Eden Cupid, Elijah Lindo, Joseph Motiki, Shechinah Mpumlwana and Morrissa Nicole as the Loops family. Hyman is the series executive producer and head writer, with Hall serving as story editor, Huy Tran as director, Laurie Rabin as supervising producer, Trina Sanyal as associate producer, Joon Chung as script coordinator and Nneka Bolden as digital producer.

Series advisors include Amon Millner, PhD, Associate Professor of Computing and Innovation at the Olin College of Engineering directing the Extending Access to STEM Empowerment (EASE) Lab, series Curriculum Director; Nermeen Dashoush, PhD, Clinical Assistant Professor, Early Childhood Education, Boston University, Lead Advisor; Yenda Prado, PhD, Education Researcher, University of California, Irvine, Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Advisor; V. Scott Solberg, PhD, Professor, Department of Counseling and Applied Human Development, Boston University, Career Pathways and World of Work Advisor; Cosette Strong, Strong Consulting Group, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Advisor.

“I have always enjoyed this iteration of the Mr. Bean character and the particular freedoms he has in animated form,” says Atkinson. “We can take him into space or down a tin mine, without me personally having to suffer the consequences. The animation process creatively is always fascinating and I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the new series very much.”

Tom Beattie, MD Tiger Aspect Kids & Family and series producer, notes, “It’s a real pleasure to have the opportunity to go back to such a special series. Mr. Bean is an iconic comedy legend and it’s an honor to work with Rowan to create this physically funny series.”

Co-created by Rowan Atkinson and Richard Curtis, the eponymous hero was played by Atkinson, who now voice stars in the globally successful animated series, which launched in 2002. The brand also attracts significant digital audiences, with over 140 million followers on Meta, making it the biggest TV brand on the platform; over 72 million subscribers and 19 billion lifetime views across official YouTube channels; 10 million followers on Instagram; and 14.2 million likes on TikTok.

  • Combo Studio Animates Trixie & Katya’s Magically Glam Christmas Special

Combo Studio Animates Trixie & Katya’s Magically Glam Christmas Special

This holiday season, fans of Ru Paul’s Drag Race personalities were treated to a special animated spin-off episode of Trixie & Katya Show, packed to the top of the stocking with eleganza. Combo Studio, based in Rio de Janeiro and known for productions like Netflix’s Super Drags and Pabllo Vittar’s “Rajadão” music video, was entrusted with the animation production, from character concepts to the final version of the video. “Trixie & Katya Christmas” was released December 20 on the Ru Paul’s Drag Race official YouTube channel.

The five-minute production is a collaboration with New York-based Cartuna, which enlisted Combo to transform the duo’s show into animation with a more mature tone, while retaining the gurls‘ recognizable style. The project was designed with particular care to delighting true fans, with plenty of Easter eggs. The episode features the voices of the titular drag queens, Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamo. (Trixie previously lent her voice to another Combo Studio project, playing Champagne in the English-language version of the Super Drags series.)

“Our main focus was to bring this universe in a format easily recognizable to the characters, with good animation, as a ‘gift’ to our loyal audience,” explains Vitor Campos, animation director and partner at Combo Studio.

    Trixie & Katya Christmas

Synopsis: In a snowy winter cabin, Katya, a retired drag queen, receives an unexpected visit from Little Brian, a desperate messenger from the village. Nutcracker’s, the last queer bar between the North Pole and Gloucester, faces closure, spelling the end of drag in the region. Little Brian pleads with Katya to perform and save the bar, but she is reluctant to resurrect her past career. However, something unexpected happens…

Combo Studio developed the entire visual creative proposal for the short film, including concepts, visuals and style, after receiving the script and pre-recorded audio. From there, they created storyboards, character designs and handled the total animation production, which took approximately three months to complete. Around 25 professionals were involved in the project, with a notable contribution from representatives of the LGBTQIA+ community and fans of the original series — providing manual work, ideas, suggestions and advice, with the aim of creating an inclusive seasonal tribute to the irrepressible queens.

“We were very happy to be contacted by Cartuna for such an important and representative project. We have a portfolio with productions focused on the LGBTQIA+ audience, and we know that inclusion, diversity, and respect are essential for society. It’s always important to highlight these issues, bringing animations with humor but without losing the main message,” comments Marcelo Pereira, a partner at Combo Studio.

Established in 2015, Combo Studio is responsible for several animated successes both in Brazil and around the world. Its main creation is the character Any Malu. Among its other well-known production contributions, the studio provided animation for the Netflix film America: The Motion Picture, Marvel Studios’ Hit Monkey, CAKE toon Swan Boy (both on Hulu), more than 80 minutes of Netflix series Agent Elvis and episodes of Rick and Morty Season 7 (available on Max).
