  • Trailer: Olan Rogers’ ‘Godspeed’ Races to YouTube Premiere

Trailer: Olan Rogers’ ‘Godspeed’ Races to YouTube Premiere

Final Space creator and executive producer Olan Rogers, Academy Award-nominated executive producer Rosa Tran (Anomalisa, Robot Chicken), and director Ben Bjelajac (Final Space) through their newly launched studios Lightfold have unveiled the trailer for the outfit’s first project: a 24-minute sci-fi epic animated series called Godspeed. The high-staked adventure premieres December 15 on YouTube.

Synopsis: Godspeed follows the journey of Iris, a young woman, and her adorable karaoke-bot sidekick named Bowie as they navigate the desolate landscape and abandoned homes of their crumbling world. Her path takes an unexpected turn when they stumble upon a mysterious broadcast that holds the key to their escape. To follow the message, she must survive a planet-ending storm.

The series cast includes the voices of Troy Baker (The Last of Us), Claudia Black (Farscape, The Nevers), Bryce Charles (Big Nate), Coty Galloway (Final Space) and the show’s creator, Rogers.

With the animation business buffeted by layoffs, the uncertain future of AI’s impact and other issues, Final Space was one of the toon casualties canceled with an abrupt cliffhanger and removed from streaming platforms. This spurred Rogers and his co-founders to establish a creator-first studio with the goal of producing unique stories using alternative funding avenues. Godspeed is the product of a successful Kickstarter campaign, private investments and the talents of at the time out-of-work animation creatives.

Lightfold says it is actively seeking creatives and investors to join the fold and produce more stories that challenge the traditional industry process.

“Animation is an art form I’ve completely fallen in love with and to see this industry over the past few years get almost completely gutted is heartbreaking,” said Rogers. “These are our stories being thrown away. I get it, it’s business, but to all of us, to me, it’s personal. There has to be a different way to do all of this, and instead of sitting around talking about it, we decided to do something. Lightfold’s mission is to take creatives to new levels they only ever have dreamt of while also protecting them and their stories.”

To develop the brand identity and shape the marketing strategy of Godspeed, Rogers enlisted Atlanta-based creative agency Headword!, led by CEO Forrester Kane and President Jez de Wolff, formerly of Adult Swim and TBS. Kane and de Wolff join Lightfold as fourth and fifth founders.

“We first formed Lightfold as an experiment in radically creator-favored entertainment business models. Olan, Ben and Rosa have been completely in the creative driver’s seat, and the experiment is yielding inspired results,” says Kane.

Godspeed will premiere on Olan Rogers’ YouTube Channel on December 15 at 11 a.m. ET. Follow @godspeedseries for updates and lightfold.tv for studio information.

  • French Institute Announces 7th Animation First Festival

French Institute Announces 7th Animation First Festival

The French Institute Alliance Française announces the program for the seventh annual Animation First, the only U.S. festival dedicated to showcasing the legacy and innovation of Francophone animation. FIAF will celebrate the seventh edition of its popular festival, which expands this year from a three-day to a six-day festival due to increased popularity, from Tuesday, January 23 through Sunday, January 28.

This year’s festival presents seven feature-length films (including three U.S. and three New York premieres), six short film programs, a “First Look” presentation, filmmaker talks, the annual Student Short Film Competition, and much more. New for 2024 will be the premiere of an inaugural limited-edition Animation First series poster, a juried competition of the New Francophone shorts, and a special spotlight on Québécois animated cinema. Animation First 2024 programmers are Delphine Selles-Alvarez, FIAF Film Curator, and Chloé Dheu, FIAF Film Coordinator.

“This year’s festival celebrates the power of animation to explore thought-provoking subjects —as with the films, When Adam Changes, The Siren and Mars Express, amongst others — and magnificent worlds such as those showcased in Sirocco and the Kingdom of Air Streams, and the new VR experience, Gaudi, the Atelier of the Divine,” Selles-Alvarez explains. “With the inclusion of the inaugural limited-edition poster by illustrator Peter de Sève, FIAF is highlighting its mission to celebrate animation as a cinematic art that’s not just a genre for young audiences.”

The festival opens with the New York premiere of director Jérémie Périn’s futuristic sci-fi film noir Mars Express, a prescient narrative that sparks the current conversation about AI anxiety through pop culture references and hard-boiled themes. The centerpiece film is the New York premiere of Benoît Chieux’s Sirocco and the Kingdom of Air Streams, a surreal tale of two sisters trapped in the world of their storybook. The closing night film is the U.S. premiere of Sepideh Farsi and Zaven Najjar’s The Siren, a powerfully visceral odyssey that follows a 14-year-old navigating the aftermath of an Iraqi missile strike in 1980 Abadan.

Additional features include Pablo Berger’s popular Spanish-French film Robot Dreams, the New York premiere of filmmakers Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli’s Nina and the Hedgehog’s Secret; the U.S. premiere of Cameroonian directors Daniel Minlo and Cyrille Masso’s The Sacred Cave, and the U.S. premiere of Quebec filmmaker Joël Vaudreuil’s new film When Adam Changes.

The festival’s six short film programs include Best of Annecy, Best of Annecy WTF, New Francophone Shorts 1 and 2, National Film Board of Canada (ONF) Shorts and Cinémathèque Québécoise.

New for 2024 will be the premiere of an inaugural limited-edition Animation First series poster. FIAF is excited to have commissioned illustrator Peter de Sève to create the first Animation First poster, which will be printed in limited-edition by Posteritati. For the first time, Animation First will have a juried competition for it’s New Francophone Shorts program. The jury for the New Francophone Shorts program will be made up of industry professionals including film curator Marco de Blois, director and animator Candy Kugel, and illustrator Marcos Chin.

Also new for 2024, FIAF is pleased to present Animation Speak/Easy. For this special gathering, three guest artists will be asked to share an animated short that inspires them, after which an audience discussion will ensue. This year’s festival will also bring a focus on Québécois animation. The Québécois programs will include Montreal filmmaker Joël Vaudreuil’s U.S. premiere of When Adam Changes, a talk with Montreal based filmmaker Janet Perlman, and two shorts programs; National Film Board of Canada Shorts and Cinémathèque Québécoise. Returning for the 2024 festival will be the popular Animation Jam, the 48-hour student exercise to complete an animation sequence, and free AR/VR experiences in the FIAF Library including the U.S. premiere of Gaudi, the Atelier of the Divine and Plastisapiens, with more titles to be added.

The 2024 Animation First festival will be held January 23-28 in New York, presented by FIAF. Learn more at fiaf.org.

  • JSBC Begins Production on ‘Silex & The City’ Movie

JSBC Begins Production on ‘Silex & The City’ Movie

Paris studio Je Suis Bien Content (JSBC) has announced a new chapter for the popular French comic Silex & The City, having begun production on a new live-action and animated hybrid feature about the family that’s on a mission to shake-up the Stone Age. Created by Jul (Julien Berjeaut), the comic’s nine albums have sold more than a million copies, and inspired an animated series which aired 180 episodes on Arte (France), known internationally as The Darwinners.

The film is the biggest screen adventure yet for the Dotcom family — father Blog, a hunting teacher; mother Spam, a prehistory-geography teacher; daughter Web, a teenager in an emancipation crisis; and son Url, a militant anti-Darwinist. Trapped in a prehistoric operetta, condemned never to evolve, father-daughter conflict will disrupt the family’s Stone Age routine: After a tragicomic return trip to the future, they accidentally bring back the equivalent of an Ikea Allen key — finally triggering Evolution, for better and, especially, for worse!

“A real leap in the chain of evolution, the passage of Silex & The City from the three-minute format to the long format is a small revolution,” notes creator Jul. “From a ‘one sentence-one joke’ type of writing, we leap into a suspenseful cinematic adventure: In the movie, the Dotcom family takes on a more sympathetic dimension, the references to the classics of genre cinema can resonate more, and the political criticism of our crazy civilization can really shine in this long-form story.”

Written and co-directed by Jul and Jean-Paul Guigue (Best Bugs Forever, Blaise) and produced by Je Suis Bien Content and co-founder/producer Franck Ekinci, the Silex & The City film will combine 2D animation and live action. A number of well-known Francophone actors and personalities will participate in the project, including Bruno Solo, Julie Gayet, Léa Drucker, journalist Stéphane Bern, literary critic Frédéric Beigbeder, Belgian author Amélie Nothomb and former President of France François Hollande.

The voice cast will also feature Frédéric Pierrot, Guillaume Gallienne, Michel Vuillermoz, Clément Sibony, Denis Ménochet, Noémie de Lattre, Sophia Aram, Lison Daniel, Alex Vizorek, Agnès Hurstel, Léa Salamé, Patrick Mille, Émilie Aubry, Ophélia Kolb, Raphaël Quenard, Océan, Augustin Trapenard and Félix Moati.

Je Suis Bien Content is co-producing the feature with Arte Cinéma and Leftfield (Belgium) in association with BE-TV (Belgium), SG Images, the CNC and Wallimages. Theatrical distribution will be handled by Haut & Court in France and internationally by Urban. The animation is being produced at JSBC’s Paris studio and Wahoo! studio in Liège, while live-action footage will be shot in mid-December around Brussels.

Production on Silex & The City is expected to wrap next spring, for a theatrical release window in the last trimester of 2024.

    Soul (Jan. 12, 2024)

What is it that makes you…YOU? Pixar Animation Studios’ Soul, Oscar winner for best animated feature film, introduces Joe Gardner (voice of Jamie Foxx) — a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before — a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s most important questions.

Directed by Academy Award winner Pete Docter (Inside Out, Up), co-directed by Kemp Powers (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, One Night in Miami — Oscar nominee for best adapted screenplay) and produced by Academy Award winner Dana Murray, p.g.a. (Pixar short Lou), Soul also won the Oscar for best achievement in music written for motion picture (original score by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Jon Batiste), as well as Golden Globes for best animated picture and best original motion picture score, and Grammy for best score soundtrack for visual media.

In Burrow, a young rabbit embarks on a journey to dig the burrow of her dreams, despite not having a clue what she’s doing. Rather than reveal to her neighbors her imperfections, she digs herself deeper and deeper into trouble. After hitting (bed)rock bottom, she learns there is no shame in asking for help.

Directed by Madeline Sharafian and produced by Mike Capbarat, Burrow is part of Pixar Animation Studios’ SparkShorts program.

    Turning Red (Feb. 9, 2024)

Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter — an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda!

Directed by Academy Award winner Domee Shi (Pixar short Bao) and produced by Lindsey Collins (Finding Dory), Turning Red was nominated for an Academy Award and Golden Globe for best animated feature.

Pixar Animation Studios’ SparkShort Kitbull, directed by Rosana Sullivan and produced by Kathryn Hendrickson, reveals an unlikely connection that sparks between two creatures: a fiercely independent stray kitten and a pit bull. Together, they experience friendship for the first time.

    Luca (March 22, 2024)

Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, Disney and Pixar’s original feature film Luca is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca (voice of Jacob Tremblay) shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer), but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.

Directed by Academy Award nominee Enrico Casarosa (La Luna) and produced by Andrea Warren (Lava, Cars 3), Luca was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe for best animated feature.

In Pixar Animation Studios’ Academy Award-winning short film For the Birds, small birds mock a big bird who tries to join them on a telephone wire.

Written and directed by Ralph Eggleston and produced by Karen Dufilho-Rosen, For the Birds initially opened in front of Disney and Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. in 2001.
