Six Features Selected for Animafest Competition

Animafest Zagreb 2023 has unveiled the selections for its Grand Competition Feature Film — a thematically and stylistically diverse array, selected by artistic director Daniel Šuljić. The central screenings will take place in the open air of the Tuškanac Summer Stage. The Croatian animation gathering will be held June 5-10 (animafest.hr).

    Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman

Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman by Pierre Földes, a French-American composer, painter and director of Hungarian origin, is an adaptation of six stories by Haruki Murakami with an episodic, framed structure.

The plot begins in Tokyo where, after a major earthquake (psychological rupture), a bank clerk Komura is abandoned by his news-stricken wife Kyoko, a focally relatively suppressed character whose visions give the film its title. Komura is further threatened with termination of employment, and his cat disappears, so he travels to Hokkaido to deliver a package of unknown contents. His colleague Katagiri, on the other hand, finds a large frog in the apartment which, quoting classics, asks for the clerk’s help in saving the city from a giant worm.

3D motion capture of real actors is inserted into a 2D film of subdued colors with an airy, ephemeral background.

    My Love Affair with Marriage

Signe Baumane presents her second feature-length work, My Love Affair with Marriage, a partly autobiographical, feminist-satirical musical about the maturation of the Latvian artist Zelma through two marriages and social systems and multiple partnerships. From Sakhalin and Riga, through Moscow to Toronto, we follow the story of love and patriarchy, peer, marital and institutional violence, sex and gender, identity and conventions, pressures and conformity, ideology and individualism.

Sketchy, slightly caricature 2D characters (pencil on paper) move against detailed stop-motion 3D backgrounds made of  papier-mâché, as seen in the author’s successful debut feature Rocks in My Pockets (2014) is here complemented by educational segments in which a personified brain cell explains the biochemical processes of the heroine’s emotional reactions. The animation of these segments was created by Yajun Shi, while Baumane herself devoted seven years to studying neurology, biology and anthropology to craft a playful scientific counterpoint to her ironic and political deconstruction of romantic myths.

The main voice role is performed by the Polish-American actress Dagmara Domińczyk (Succession), while the 24 songs featured in the film were composed by Kristian Sensini.

    White Plastic Sky

White Plastic Sky, from directors Tibor Bánóczki and Sarolta Szabó, is a post-apocalyptic science-fiction film with a strong environmental subtext.

In the year 2123, Budapest is the last surviving Hungarian city thanks to its dome and a social contract in which people hand over their bodies to the Plantation on their 50th birthday where they are gradually transformed into trees with edible leaves. Nora, the 32-year-old wife of psychiatrist Stefan, cannot accept her son’s death, so she voluntarily surrenders herself to the Plantation, from which Stefan will try to save her.

With the help of geologists, meteorologists and botanists, the directors wrote, drew and, over the course of seven years, made the film in a combined technique of computer 3D animation and classic manual rotoscopy. Its 3D animation enabled expansive world-building of its metropolis where social realism abuts cyberpunk influences.

    Unicorn Wars

Spanish comic artist and animator Alberto Vázquez continues his run of compelling short films and features screening at Animafest — from Birdboy and Birdboy and the Forgotten Children to Unicorn Blood, Decorado and Homeless Home — with his black comedy anti-militarism trip Unicorn Wars.

The teddy bears have been locked for years in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war.

    Feast of Amrita

The darker corners of Japanese anime are represented by the world premiere of the psychological body horror Feast of Amrita by indie auteur Saku Sakamoto, whose feature-length debut Aragne: Sign of Vermillion screened at Animafest in 2019.

Feast of Amrita takes place before Sign of Vermillion, so fans will find it particularly interesting to follow the experiences of high school girls Tamahi, Aki and Yu (with notable Japanese names Maaya Uchida and Kana Hanazawa among the voice talents) in an already familiar apartment complex where time and space are bent into a monstrous parallel reality under the influence of an obscure scientific experiment.

As in his previous film, Sakamoto uses hints of a hand-held camera to convey uncertainty and anxiety, mixing in idiosyncratic computer animation of the backgrounds and lens flare lighting.

No Changes Have Taken in Our Life

The Chinese film No Changes Have Taken in Our Life by director Jingwei Xu is about a sousaphone player named Ba, who returns to his hometown with the instrument ‘wrapped around his body’ after his studies — a story  inspired by the filmmaker’s childhood in a sleepy, provincial industrial hub. The juxtaposition of the hero’s interests and goals with the prosaic life in an unemotional and alienated tone forms a foundation for the story, in which the dreams of an artist in search of work collide with the dullness of his environment and its inhabitants, while his unusual instrument in this dreary setting adds a note of absurdity.

No Changes Have Taken in Our Life makes use of interesting framing, cuts and mise-en-scène, brough to life in 2D animation that contrasts ungainly characters on beautifully drawn backgrounds.

Lucy Animation in Colombia will be in charge of creating the artwork, visual identity and official festival trailer. The studio is the latest to partner with Pixelatl Festival and Market, which each year teams up with a different studio in order to showcase local animation talent to the world. This year marks the first this honor has gone to a studio outside of Mexico.

“We are excited about working with Lucy Animation. They are a female-led studio that represents the spirit and goals of Pixelatl. They started as a small indie studio just a few years ago to grow into one of Colombia’s largest and most promising studios based on their stunning art and unique storytelling,” commented Jose Iñesta, Pixelatl Director. “Pixelatl has always fostered coproductions and relationships among Latin America and having an international creative partner was a natural step for us.”

Lucy Animation’s mission is to showcase the beauty of Latin American culture and history through their animations, and to give a platform to the incredible talent that has been overlooked for far too long.

Pink Parrot’s ‘Unstable’ Saddles Up International Partners

Montreal- and Madrid-based international sales and distribution company Pink Parrot Media (PPM) has signed a raft of deals for Unstable, an animated musical comedy co-produced by Canada’s CarpeDiem (Snowtime!, Racetime, Butterfly Tale) and U.K.-based Cantilever Productions (The Amazing Maurice).

Viva Pictures will take U.S. distribution rights on the feature, which follows a disillusioned police horse who undergoes a dramatic makeover and seeks justice with a new friend, seven-year-old dressage enthusiast Luna.

The film has also sold to Volga (CIS and Baltics), Mis Label (Scandinavia), Pro Films (Bulgaria), Idea Films (Romania), Flins y Piniculas (Spain), NOS Lusomundo (Portugal), Monolith (Poland), Front Row (Middle East) and Blitz (Former Yugoslavia).

Unstable pranced into our hearts from the first pitch, and we are aren’t surprised this special project has found a collection of fantastic international distributors,” said Tania Pinto De Cunha, Partner/VP and Head of International Sales & Acquisitions for Pink Parrot Media. “With charm, humor and unforgettable characters we know families will love, we’re delighted that Bravo and Luna will be getting a global audience.”

Victor Elizalde, President of Viva, added, “Viva Pictures is thrilled to be a part of the Unstable production and is looking forward to releasing the film in the U.S. on over 3,000 screens in February 2026. We are confident Unstable will be a big hit with theatergoers.”

    Unstable
    Unstable

Unstable follows Bravo, a proud police horse who is convinced that he and his rider, Sergeant Braque, have solved many theft cases. But when the Queen’s crown is stolen, the horse realizes that his rider (with the complicity of his wife) is replacing all the jewels brought to the authorities for years with copies! Betrayed, Bravo flees with the crown and hides at Luna’s house.

Spotting an opportunity, Luna — who has longed to participate in a dressage competition — extravagantly disguises Bravo and renames him Mr. Princess Lady Boots. Bravo realizes this disguise allows him to right the wrongs of his former rider incognito — but his fervor almost goes too far and he has to take the reins in a dramatic bid to rescue his new friend.

Unstable is directed by Benoit Godbout (Racetime, The Bottanix) and co-written by David Freedman and Gareth Edwards. The film is currently closing financing and will be produced by Marie Claude Beauchamp from CarpeDiem Film & TV and Andrew Baker from Cantilever Media.

  • Little Dot Shares ‘Wombles’ Eco Message with a New Generation

Little Dot Shares ‘Wombles’ Eco Message with a New Generation

Award-winning digital content agency and media network Little Dot Studios, and All3Media company, has been contracted to handle social media support for classic and brand-new animation from The Wombles, as the brand continues to inspire kids to recycle, reuse and rethink the way they live to make the world a better place.

Kicking off right away, the partnership consists of Facebook and YouTube channel and community management, together with creating a bespoke paid for campaign that will run across Facebook, YouTube and TikTok. Little Dot Studios’ organic and paid digital strategy will look to grow Latch Media’s The Wombles audience by targeting a younger-skewing demographic with classic content that highlights key sustainability messages that are now in the peripheral of today’s culture.

Created by English author Elisabeth Beresford and introduced in 1968, The Wombles were early crusaders for green living. The fictional pointy-nosed, furry creatures live in burrows on Wimbledon Common, where they aim to help the environment by collecting and recycling rubbish in creative ways. The novels have inspired multiple adaptations over the years, including the classic stop-motion television series in 1973.

    The Wombles

In addition to surfacing classic content that resonates with today’s audience, The Wombles are revitalizing the brand by producing new content which will be available to audiences on YouTube this year, this new content will become part of the digital ecosystem to drive engagement and subscribers.

“The nostalgia around The Wombles is incredible, it’s ingrained in people’s childhoods so the chance to work with a legendary entertainment brand like this and get it in front of new audiences is really exciting for us,” said James Loveridge, Director of Entertainment, Little Dot Studios.

“We have extensive experience in partnering with IP owners, giving new life to older content in order to attract new viewers digitally as brands look to scale up awareness. And we very much look forward to working with the team as they launch brand new animated content; for a classic brand’s messaging to be more important 60 years after launch provides a massive opportunity for digital growth for The Wombles across all its official social media channels.”

The Wombles joins Little Dot Studios’ roster of kids entertainment brands which already includes The Octonauts, Peter Rabbit, Care Bears, Baby Jake and Woolly & Tig.

Directed by Australian CGI creator Ian Brown (Fellowship of the Ring, Moulin Rouge, Alien TV; director of Emmy-winning and seven times Emmy-nominated Beat Bugs), Arvee Chronicles is set in a future world where AI and humans co-exist and where young Tye Devany and the mighty Arvee form a bond to save their universe.

The CG-animated project will be produced utilizing Pop Family’s bespoke pipeline, Popcorn, which has been developed in partnership with AWS’ cloud-based production platform, Nimble.

Arvee Chronicles is a multi-layered, graphic, sci-fi adventure that explores a deeply emotional relationship between humans and sentient machines,” explained producer Carmel Travers, CEO of Pop Family. “This is a not so incredible space where fiction and real science intersect.”

Hulu’s New ‘Futurama’ Season Blasts Off in July

The series follows Philip J. Fry (Billy West), a New York City pizza delivery boy, who accidentally freezes himself in 1999 and gets defrosted in the year 3000. In this astonishing New New York, he befriends hard-drinking robot Bender (John DiMaggio), and falls in love with cyclops Leela (Katey Sagal). The trio find work at the Planet Express Delivery Company, founded by Fry’s doddering descendant, Professor Hubert Farnsworth. Season 11 promises something for everyone: New viewers will be able to pick up the series from here, while long-time fans will recognize payoffs to decades-long mysteries — including developments in the epic love story of Fry and Leela, the mysterious contents of Nibbler’s litter box, the secret history of evil Robot Santa, and the whereabouts of Kif and Amy’s tadpoles. The voice cast reuniting the original stars of Futurama also features Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr and David Herman.

Futurama S11 docks at Hulu in July!

Futurama premiered in 1999 and quickly gained a faithful following and critical acclaim, including two primetime Emmys for Outstanding Animated Program. Despite its far-future setting, the show is renowned for its satiric commentary on life in the present.

After its initial run on the Fox Broadcasting Network, a rollercoaster of cancellations and resurrections ensued. Four successful direct-to-DVD releases in 2007-2009 led to the show’s rebirth on Comedy Central from 2010-2013. Then, after a brief 10-year freeze in the cryogenic chamber, Futurama emerged triumphantly as a streaming series for Hulu.

Futurama is created by Matt Groening and developed by Groening and David X. Cohen. Executive producers include Groening, Cohen, Ken Keeler and Claudia Katz. The series is produced by 20th Television Animation,  part of Disney Television Studios, with animation by Rough Draft Studios.
