Turkish toon house Fauna Entertainment (Kukuli, Brody Luckystar, Briko) announced a partnership with music label EDZ, owned by Turkish pop star Özgün, to co-produce a new music-led animated series which promotes inclusivity and teaches young viewers the importance of accepting each other’s differences.
Ediko
“My son, Ediz, is the source of our inspiration for the series,” Özgün shared. “Although we have never seen him different than anyone, Ediz was born with Down syndrome, and he kept on inspiring us every day. We didn’t want to make a show to point out how normal kids with Down syndrome are, but on the contrary wanted to praise how we should accept everyone however they are, feel and want to be.”
The new show called Ediko, from the Turkish diminutive of Ediz, is being produced for a preschool audience with a planned YouTube Kids exclusive launch by the end of March, coinciding with the inspirational boy’s birthday.
Fauna Entertainment’s digital media unit will be taking over and managing the YouTube channel Ediko TV, adding it under the Fauna Channel umbrella.
Discovery Family Channel (DFC) announced today Hanni and the Wild Woods will officially bloom on television screens on Saturday, April 1. The first four episodes will premiere back-to-back starting at 7:30 a.m. on Discovery Family Channel, premiering in Spanish on Discovery Familia on Sunday, April 2, beginning at 10 a.m.
The premiere episode, called “First Flowers!,” ushers in spring, and while there’s plenty to celebrate, Hanni and the Forest Friends find a mischievous duo that turn their day into an adventure.
From Korean creator Minah Eom and TOBEIT Global Corp., Hanni and the Wild Woods aims to give preschoolers a greater appreciation and understanding of the importance of nature. They’ll follow along as “The Forest Friends” motivate them to enjoy nature while teaching young viewers to care for and preserve the world around them.
“As a mother who is constantly inspired by my two daughters, it was important for me to create a show that inspires children to go outside and enjoy nature,” said Eom. “By showing them its inherent beauty, I hope to plant within them at a young age a desire and a sense of duty to protect our planet.”
“We are excited to bring our viewers on a journey along with Hanni and the Forest Friends through the wonderful world we live in,” said Corenna Smith, Director of Content and Marketing, Discovery Family Channel. “Introducing younger audiences and their parents to Hanni provides them with a way to share their love and respect for Mother Nature through these thoughtfully and beautifully produced stories.”
Following premiere weekend, new episodes will debut on Saturdays at 8 a.m. on DFC and at 10 a.m. on Discovery Familia.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, global education organization Room to Read today announced She Creates Change, a nonprofit-led animation and live-action film project to promote gender equality through the stories of young women around the world. To produce the film series, Oscar-, BAFTA, Cannes Grand Prix- and Grammy-winning Nexus Studios curated a team of diverse women directors and artists from around the world with distinct visual styles.
The multi-media initiative — which in addition to a six-episode film series also includes books and audio stories — aims to reach the globe’s 432 million adolescent girls (ages 12-18) with content and educational curriculum that supports them in creating change in their lives and communities.
“Every girl around the world woke up today with the same need. She had to utilize skills like resilience, self-confidence and critical thinking to overcome challenges — for herself, her family or her community. To achieve a world free from gender inequality, girls must develop these important skills and have access to role models that make perseverance possible. She Creates Change is Room to Read’s solution to accelerating equality for every girl in the world by spotlighting role models who demonstrate their use of key skills to accomplish positive change,” said Dr. Geetha Murali, CEO of Room to Read. “Inspired by the stories presented in She Creates Change, I know young women everywhere will activate their abilities to be changemakers and make informed choices to shape their futures.”
She Creates Change is a series of six animated shorts with accompanying live-action mini documentaries that feature the narratives of six courageous young women from historically low-income communities in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Vietnam. The series, produced by Nexus Studios, portrays how each girl confronts challenges unique to her life — such as harassment, food scarcity or early marriage — along with the life skills she uses to advocate for herself and her future. The stories address topics including climate justice, financial literacy, discrimination, menstruation and sexual harassment.
She Creates Change
The films will be available in dozens of languages, starting with English, Spanish and Hindi, and distributed throughout the world through Room to Read programs and in partnership with community organizations and governments. Curriculum packages that align with the stories presented, based on Room to Read’s comprehensive seven-year Girls’ Education Program curriculum, will be provided online, through broadcast media and in-person programming.
Directors and artists who worked on the series include Oscar nominee Siqi Song (Sister), Hannah Lau-Walker, AACTA nominee Bonnie Forsyth (Femme Enfant), Claudia Chinyere Akole, Neeraja Raj (Meow or Never) and Prashanti Aswani. Notable writers like London’s first Young Poet Laureate Warsan Shire, whose poetry was adapted for Beyoncé’s “Lemonade”, crafted the screenplays.

Emmy winner Martha Adams, whose pasts projects include Girls Rising and We Will Rise: Michelle Obama’s Mission to Educate Girls around the World, serves as series director and producer for the project. Executive producers are Brenda Chapman, the first woman to win an Oscar for best animated feature film (Brave), and veteran screenwriter and director Jill Culton (Abominable), recipient of Animation Magazine‘s World Animation Summit Game Changer award for being the first woman to write and direct an original animated theatrical feature.
“For too long, the stories we have seen and heard through global media have not represented the voices of so many young women in the world. The practice of sharing stories by women, about women and for women is an undeniably powerful way to help girls advocate for themselves and their rights,” said Adams. “It is an honor for me to help share the diverse stories featured in She Creates Change. Though each girl’s individual circumstances may be unique, the courage and skills demonstrated are universal and exemplify how the rising generation of girls can use their voices to change their circumstances and societies.”
Julia Parfitt, Executive Producer at Nexus Studios, commented, “The work that Room to Read is doing is evident in the stories we have told, and the impact on the girl’s lives shared through authentic voices was as moving as it was uplifting. To collaborate with the team at Room to Read and Martha, and to have the opportunity to curate a diverse and (mostly) female team of global talent, including directors, writers, actors, musicians, composers and producers, was a huge privilege … The results of this endeavour paint a truly emotional picture that binds the directors with their subjects to tell stories that resonate universally. I’m so glad we were able to do this using a variety of animation styles that elevated it and brought joy.”
She Creates Change
The film episodes feature voice over acting by a roster of talent including Freida Pinto, Charithra Chandran, YouTube sensation Prajakta Koli (MostlySane), Dilshad Vadsaria, Adhir Kalyan, Amrita Acharia and Quyen Ngo. Kenyan R&B pop singer Karun Mungai performs the original She Creates Change campaign song “Who Am I?” written by Warsan Shire and composed by Lucie Treacher.
Rebel Girls, a global multi-media girl empowerment brand, is a strategic partner on the campaign and has produced books and audio stories that complement the film series.
All six stories from the She Creates Change film series will be released to general audiences in October 2023, in celebration of International Day of the Girl.

A total of 102 newly developed animation projects were submitted for the 17th edition of Animation Production Days (APD) in Stuttgart. Out of this record number of submissions, the selection committee has now chosen 50 projects from 18 countries. From April 26-28, the producers and directors of these projects will negotiate co-production and funding opportunities in pre-scheduled one-to-one meetings.
APD, a joint venture of the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) and the FMX – Film & Media Exchange, is billed as the most important business platform for animation projects in Germany.
Organizers note that, while they can’t say for sure that COVID lockdowns led to a boost in development or if other factors are at play, the uptick in dystopian themes in projects, particularly by younger producers and creatives, reflects the world’s current crisis-ridden situation. This year’s broad range of themes covered environmental issues tackled for all age groups; questions of individuality, belonging and solidarity; comedy series — some with philosophical undertones or societal critiques — and lots of fantasy and adventure stories. Social dramas and historical material for the whole family are also on offer.
Of the 50 selected projects, 15 come from Germany, followed by five from Spain and four each from Denmark and France. Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine and the U.K. are also represented. Two of the projects were selected as part of a cooperation with the CEE Animation Workshop.
Two projects are being presented at APD this year from South Africa: their producers are part of a South African delegation travelling to Stuttgart as part of a partnership between ITFS, FMX & APD, Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF) and the Triggerfish Foundation. This initiative is being supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
Overall, this year’s APD selection comprises 14 feature films, two TV specials, 31 series and five cross-media projects. At least one woman is involved in a managerial position (i.e. as a producer or director) in 63% of the projects.
Around 20% of the selected projects are designed for preschool children, another 20% for a family audience, just over 40% for school children and teenagers up to the age of around 14 and almost another 20% for young adults and/or adult audiences.
The combined production volume of the projects amounts to more than 200 million euros.
A total of 37 submissions received were for a place in the coveted APD Talent Program, which sees eight European projects selected each year to participate in APD free of charge. At APD, up-and-coming producers and creatives have the opportunity to discuss their ideas with experienced industry experts, establish connections and find partners for their projects. The series project Rille and Julia by Jonas Hjohlman (Sweden) has qualified for participation in the Talent Program this year via our cooperation with the European training program Animation Sans Frontières. And, in cooperation with the Polish Kids Kino Industry event, Ester Kasalová and Hynek Spurný from Czech Republic have won a place in the APD Talent Program with their project Butterfly Quest.
Details on all selected projects and more information about APD 2023 available at animationproductiondays.de.
A new chapter in reaching equity and inclusion on the global animation festival circuit has begun with the launch of Keep Festive, an initiative that stands against any sort of sexual harassment and that helps festivals organizers to prevent any type of discrimination, from sexism to sexual harassment, to ensure that these events remain fun for everyone. The project was conceived in 2022 and is backed by an international collective of film festivals and distribution companies.
“By gathering as many festivals as possible, by organizing public events dealing with harassment, we show that there is a need and that we must address it as a group, to make sure we include as many opinions as possible,” Co-Founders Luce Grosjean and Clémence Bragard told ASIFA. “Public shaming makes no sense to us, neither basic revenge. It is by preventing, notifying directors that they are being watched, and temporarily banishing them from certain events that we hope to make things change.
“We would also like to work on how we can reintegrate some people who have misbehaved during some events. We don’t want to be cops, and we have a philosophy of ‘restorative justice.’ What is important to us is that festival attendees and staff members feel good and safe during events and if anything bad happens, they can feel good again to attend other places.”
The core of Keep Festive is hosting a certain number of activities that will help in creating:
a toolbox for festival organizers and attendees that will help to prevent any kind of sexual abuse
a code of conduct that members can follow
a training program for festival staff and volunteers to make their guests feel more comfortable and safe.
Events involved in Keep Festive are Tricky Women (Austria), Ottawa International Animation Festival (Canada), Kaboom Animation Festival (The Netherlands), Go Short – International Short Film Festival Nijmegen (The Netherlands), Anifilm (Czech Republic), Animafest Zagreb (Croatia), Annecy International Animation Festival (France), Fest Anča (Slovakia), Anibar (Kosovo), Turku Animated Film Festival (Finland), Fantoche International Animation Film Festival (Switzerland), LINOLEUM Contemporary Animation and Media Art Festival (Ukraine), Viborg International Animation Festival (Denmark), Animest (Romania), Animateka (Slovenia) and Olympia International Film Festival for Children and Young People (Greece). French film outfit Miyu Distribution is also on board.
The spark the would become this initiative was struck back in 2019, when Grosjean, Founder & Director of Miyu Distribution, issued a powerful statement about the abusive experiences shared by herself and many women in the industry:
“We hear stories. Direct testimonies. Women being harassed, touched without their consent, feeling pressured to do something they may not feel comfortable doing … Festivals that will let this kind of behavior happens without reacting, I will also consider them as non-safe places for women. I will warn our female directors before sending their films to their festivals, and if our films are selected, we will make sure that the female directors will have the information before going so they can protect themselves.
“Festival directors: you are the people who have the most power today in the little animation short film industry. You give visibility to these men, legitimacy. By inviting them, you are saying that their behavior is okay. And then you bring them into a party full of young women. This shouldn’t have to be said, but apparently it does: you are responsible for the safety of the female guests at your festivals, and you are responsible for the behavior of the men you invite.”
The first official Keep Festive lecture was held at the Animateka festival in December 2022. The talk, led by a psychologist Matic Munc, covers a wide range of topics related to sexual behavior and has now been released on YouTube (watch it here).
As Keep Festive continues to work on the creation of a toolbox for international festivals and their attendees, the collective has just announced an upcoming talk in Vienna as part of the Tricky Women festival.
On March 10, Meike Lauggas will speak about #we_do! an organization that provides contact and counselling for filmmakers in case of abuse of power and unequal treatment, discrimination, sexual assault and violations of labor law — anonymous, free of charge and confidential for everyone in the Austrian film and television industry. Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment today offered a first look at the extra-sinister Elseworlds makeovers applied to some of the Dark Knight’s iconic rogues gallery in Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham. Inspired by the comic book series by Mike Mignola, Richard Pace and Troy Nixey, the new DC movie from Warner Bros. Animation arrive on Digital, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Combo Pack and Blu-ray on March 28.
The 1920s-based tale finds explorer Bruce Wayne accidentally unleashing an ancient evil, expediting his return to Gotham City after a two-decade hiatus. The logic/science-driven Batman must battle Lovecraftian supernatural forces threatening the sheer existence of Gotham, along the way being aided and confronted by reimagined versions of his well-known allies and enemies, including Green Arrow, Ra’s al Ghul, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Two-Face, James Gordon and Bruce’s beloved wards. Prepare for a mystical, often terrifying Batman adventure unlike any other.
Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham
Where Professor Oswald Cobblepot’s expedition ends is where Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham begins, as Bruce Wayne and his crew discover Cobblepot’s abandoned ship, including his detailed journal. But the Wayne expedition can find no sign of the professor, even while the evolving Cobblepot and his penguins watch them intently from high above.
David Giuntoli (Grimm, A Million Little Things) reprises his Batman: Soul of the Dragon role as the voice of Bruce Wayne & the Dark Knight, while William Salyers (The Regular Show) voices yet another rendition of the Penguin as Cobbelpot.
Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham
Killer Croc’s Elseworlds version might be even more menacing than his usual appearance, particularly as the massive creature operates under the merciless command of Talia al Ghul — or as in this pic, looms tall over Batman.
Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham
Talia al Ghul seems to be integral to the troubled shadows overtaking the city in Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham. Three-time Emmy Award nominee Emily O’Brien (Constantine: City of Demons, Days of Our Lives) reprises her Gotham Knights video game role as Talia al Ghul.
Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham
As an Elseworlds take on Mr. Freeze, Grendon appears to Bruce Wayne and his family as a frozen, undying corpse who is devoted to the evil entity unleashed upon the unsuspecting world. DC Animated Movies veteran David Dastmalchian (Dune, The Suicide Squad, Ant-Man) gives voice to Grendon.

For artists who release their Short Short under a CC0 license, the NOUNS festival team has set aside $20,000 in extra prizes for a variety of categories, including fan favorite and a jury award for best picture.
Animators who are not selected to receive funding can still submit their original shorts to the festival to compete for these prizes.

GKIDS announced today it has acquired all United States distribution rights for Ernest & Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia, co-directed by Jean-Christophe Roger and Julien Chheng. A follow up to the Oscar-nominated Ernest & Celestine, the film once again features the famous unlikely duo — this time returning to Ernest’s hometown in Gibberitia.
Nominated for Best Animated Feature at France’s 48th César Awards, Ernest & Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia opened in French theaters in December, and will have its U.S. Premiere as the opening night film of the New York International Children’s Film Festival this Friday, March 3.
GKIDS, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, previously handled United States distribution for Ernest & Celestine, which won the César Award for Best Animated Feature, before going on to earn GKIDS its third Academy Award nomination. Nearly 10 years later, GKIDS will release Ernest & Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia theatrically in both its original French language and a new English dubbed version this year. The all-rights U.S. distribution deal was negotiated between GKIDS and Chloe Marquet, SVP International Sales at STUDIOCANAL.
“After 10 years, it’s wonderful to reunite with my favorite bear and mouse, Ernest and Celestine,” said GKIDS President David Jesteadt. “Ernest and Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia is full of the emotional warmth, comedy and stunning animation that made the original film so iconic. Films of this quality are increasingly rare, and we are honored to be able to partner again with the producers on a new chapter with these beloved characters.”
Marquet added, “We are thrilled to team up with GKIDS again and on the new adventures of Ernest and Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia . We know their incredible team will bring all of their talent and passion to releasing this film in U.S. theaters spreading the values of kindness and friendship that are so important to our beloved mouse and bear!”
Synopsis: Ernest and Celestine return in this delightful and joyous follow-up to their first Academy Award-nominated adventure, which introduced a bear and mouse as the unlikeliest of friends. Ernest remains an ursine troubadour dedicated to a life of music and art, and his constant grouchiness is softened by the creative whims of his mouse friend Celestine. When she accidentally breaks his beloved violin, they must take a long voyage to Ernest’s country of Gibberitia, home to the only artist who can repair it. But when they arrive, they are shocked to discover that all forms of music have been banned in Gibberitia for many years, and a land once known across the world for its incredible musicians has fallen silent. It is up to Ernest and Celestine and their new friends, including a mysterious masked outlaw, to bring music and happiness back to the land of bears.
Roger, director of the Ernest & Celestine: The Collection animated series, returns to the beloved characters as co-director, and is joined by Emmy-nominated co-director Chheng, who previously worked on the original Ernest & Celestine feature as a character animator, and serves as director for an upcoming installation of Star Wars: Visions Volume 2.
A France/Luxembourg co-production of Folivari, Melusine Prod./Studio 352 and STUDIOCANAL, the film is written by Guillaume Mautalent, Sébastien Oursel and Jean Regnaud, produced by Didier Brunner, Damien Brunner and Stéphan Roelants. The French voice cast features Pauline Brunner, Lambert Wilson, Michel Lerousseau and Céline Ronté.
FOX Entertainment and its Emmy-winning animation studio Bento Box Entertainment are tripling-down on the upcoming animated comedy Krapopolis, ordering a third season renewal for the latest project from hitmaker Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty, Community). The news was announced at London Screenings by Michael Thorn, President, Scripted Programming, of FOX Entertainment.
From Emmy Award winner, creator and executive producer Harmon and produced by FOX’s Bento Box (Bob’s Burgers, The Great North, Krapopolis, Grimsburg), Krapopolis will make its series premiere during the 2023-24 Season. Propelled by early fan response, the series, wholly owned by FOX Entertainment and distributed by its worldwide sales and distribution unit, FOX Entertainment Global, earned a Season 2 renewal last October.
“The 2023-24 Season is the perfect launching pad for this highly-anticipated and very funny animated comedy, complete with multiple seasons of epic laughs for fans,” said Thorn. “The more we see from production, the more excited we are about their creativity, story arcs, flawless execution, brilliant voice cast and ability to pump out episode after episode of astonishing events and outrageous, unexpected hilarity.”
An outgrowth of Harmon’s direct animation deal with FOX Entertainment, Krapopolis is set in mythical ancient Greece and tells the story of a dysfunctional family of humans, gods and monsters that try their hand at running the world’s first cities — without trying to kill each other, that is.
The series stars the Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd) as the voice of Tyrannis, the mortal son of a goddess. He’s the benevolent King of Krapopolis, trying to make do in a city that lives up to its name. Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) plays Deliria, Tyrannis’ mother, goddess of self-destruction and questionable choices. Within her extended Olympian family — forged in patricide and infidelity — she’s known as the trashy one. Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows) is Shlub, Tyrannis’ father, a mantitaur (half centaur [horse + human], half manticore [lion + human + scorpion]). He is oversexed and underemployed, claims to be an artist and has literally never paid for anything, in any sense of that word, for his entire life. Pam Murphy (Mapleworth Murders) voices Stupendous, Tyrannis’ half-sister, daughter of Deliria and a cyclops. And Duncan Trussell (The Midnight Gospel) plays Hippocampus, Tyrannis’ half-brother, offspring of Shlub and a mermaid, and obviously a hot mess, biologically speaking.
Additionally, FOX’s Web3 media and creative technology company Blockchain Creative Labs operates krapopolis.com— a dedicated marketplace for the program, marking network television’s first animated series to be curated on the blockchain — which sells digital goods and NFTs that provide fans exclusive experiences, including access to token-gated content, exclusive show voting rights, private Discord channels and access to meet-and-greets with the cast and crew.
