Trailer: ‘My Little Pony: Make Your Mark’ Returns for Chapter 2 This Month

The Mane Five are hoofing it back to Netflix to make more ponyriffic magic in My Little Pony: Make Your Mark, Chapter 2. A New trailer and key art for this next installment of the CG animated Hasbro series dropped today, with new episodes launching September 26.

Synopsis: Magic has finally returned to Equestria thanks to Sunny Starscout and her new friends! The Pegasi can fly and the Unicorns can use levitation again… and the Earth Ponies have activated their own special magic for the very first time in history. It’s a whole new world! Which is exhilarating… but, well, also a little scary and strange. And now that Sunny is an Alicorn with powers, there’s a lot to figure out.

My Little Pony: Make Your Mark will explore the rules of this growing magic while the Mane 5 get to know themselves on their own journeys of self-discovery. Living together for the first time, the ponies must navigate a new normal living in a society that has recently undergone a massive, life-changing shift. The relatability of this new reality is the perfect springboard to tell relatable, fresh stories that will appeal to this generation of emotionally tuned-in viewers and all of the things they are going through in a world that has been forever changed.

And as the Mane 5 explore the rules of magic and discover about themselves in the process, the series will focus in on the existing lands of Maretime Bay, Bridlewood, and Zephyr Heights. It will delve deeper into their individual backstories, their hobbies and jobs (whether it be sheriff, smoothie-cart owner, or detective princess), familial relationships (Pipp & Zipp’s sisterhood), and journeys to find exactly what makes each of them “sparkle.”

A diverse and adorable supporting bunch of Unicorns, Pegasi, and Earth Ponies who are all adjusting to life with magic in their own ways make up a colorful cast. But a typical episode might center around the Mane 5 helping one another with a magical mystery, juggling responsibilities and friendships, or learning more about each other’s different species’ cultural customs. All while resisting the plan of an evil villain who hopes to steal it all away from them.

My Little Pony: Make Your Mark features the voices of Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Zipp, Jenna Warren as Sunny, JJ Gerber as Hitch, Ana Sani as Izzy, AJ Bridel as Pipp and Bahia Watson as Misty.

The series was developed by Gillian Berrow. Cort Lane is executive producer and Tristan Homer is co-exec producer. William Lau (The Last Kids on Earth; Monster High and Barbie animated movie franchises) is supervising director.

  • D23 Teases New ‘Mickey’ Doc, ‘Star Wars’ Animated Projects

D23 Teases New ‘Mickey’ Doc, ‘Star Wars’ Animated Projects

The D23 Expo continued to fuel fan excitement through the weekend with a jam-packed presentation from the teams at Walt Disney Studios’ Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios and 20th Century Studios — including more animated adventures from the Star Wars galaxy. Kicking off the 100th anniversary celebrations for The Walt Disney Company, Disney+ also unveiled the teaser trailer and official key art for a new Disney Original Documentary all about Walt’s most famous star: Mickey Mouse.

Mickey The Story of a Mouse

The Disney Original Documentary Mickey: The Story of a Mouse will premiere globally on Disney+ on November 18, Mickey Mouse’s birthday. The film is directed by award-winning filmmaker Jeff Malmberg (Marwencol) and produced by Academy Award winner Morgan Neville (Won’t You Be My Neighbor), Meghan Walsh and Chris Shellen

As one of the world’s most beloved characters, Mickey Mouse is recognized as a symbol of joy and childhood innocence in virtually every corner of the globe. Dreamed up at a low point in Walt Disney’s burgeoning career, Mickey became an overnight sensation when he starred in the first sync-sound animated short, “Steamboat Willie.” Through the decades that followed, the character evolved into strikingly different versions of himself that reflect both his creator’s remarkable career and dramatic societal shifts in the nation he came to represent.

Mickey: The Story of a Mouse features legendary Disney animators Eric Goldberg, Mark Henn and Randy Haycock, animation artist and Disney Legend Floyd Norman, art historian Carmenita Higginbotham, director of Walt Disney Archives Rebecca Cline and archivist Kevin Kern. With exclusive archival footage and interviews, the film examines the ongoing artistic and cultural significance — as well as the controversies — surrounding the nearly 100-year-old cartoon mouse. The film features a brand new Walt Disney Animation Studios hand-drawn animated short, Mickey in a Minute, and documents its animation process by Goldberg, Henn and Haycock.

“Ninety-four years ago, Walt Disney created a mouse that would become one of the world’s most beloved characters,” said Marjon Javadi, VP of Disney Original Documentary. “We are excited for the world to see Mickey Mouse in a way they’ve never seen him before. Our award-winning team of filmmakers captures Mickey’s journey through the years and reminds us why he has had such an impact on us.”

The documentary was executive produced by Caitrin Rogers, edited by Jake Hostetter, Aaron Wickenden, cinematography by Antonio Cisneros, sound design by Lawrence Everson and music by Daniel Wohl. The film had its World Premiere at SXSW earlier this year and also screened at the Sun Valley Film Festival and Newport Summer Film Series, among others.

Opening the WDS mega-presentation, chairman Alan Bergman reflected on the 13-year history of D23 Expo and the evolution of the Studios group: “That [first] year, none of the iconic studios you’ll hear from today were part of the company,” he said. “It was just Disney Animation, Disney Live Action and Pixar. We announced the Marvel acquisition just before our first Expo in 2009. Then three years later, we added Lucasfilm, and in 2019, 20th Century Studios. I’ve been at Disney for 26 years, so it’s been incredibly exciting to welcome each of them to our Studio family. And like Disney and Pixar, each of these studios has a phenomenal legacy of storytelling.”

Executive producer Dave Filoni joined Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy on stage for a host of upcoming titles, streaming on Disney+, including some animation updates:

    • Filoni showed a new image from the upcoming 16-episode second season of the animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Months have passed since the events on Kamino and the Bad Batch continue their journey navigating the Empire after the fall of the Republic. They will cross paths with friends and foes, both new and familiar, as they take on a variety of thrilling mercenary missions that will take them to unexpected and dangerous new places. Starring Dee Bradley Baker and Michelle Ang, with Filoni, Carrie Beck, Athena Portillo, Brad Rau (supervising director) and Jennifer Corbett (head writer) serving as executive producers. The series will begin streaming on Disney+ with a two-episode premiere on January 4, 2023.
    • The EP segued to Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, six brand-new animated shorts featuring parables built around Jedi from the prequel era. Journey into the lives of two distinctly different Jedi — Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku — each will be put to the test as they make choices that will define their destinies. To the delight of the audience, Filoni shared the official trailer for the series and announced that all six shorts will debut October 26 on Disney+. The series is created by executive producer Filoni, with Carrie Beck and Athena Portillo serving as executive producers.

    The Lucasfilm highlights also included:

  • Turnip + Duck Introduces ‘Maddie + Triggs’ to Fall Markets

Turnip + Duck Introduces ‘Maddie + Triggs’ to Fall Markets

Award-winning writer-led creator studio Turnip + Duck is  ramping up its activity ahead of Cartoon Forum and MIPCOM, launching brand new animated series Maddie + Triggs (39 x 7’) and expanding its operations with the appointment of Rob Doherty as Head of Content and Laura Canavan-Hayes as Development Executive.

Turnip + Duck’s Managing Director Colm Tobin and Creative Director Aidan O’Donovan will pitch the company’s new 2D animated series to a global audience of buyers in Toulouse at Cartoon Forum on Wednesday, September 21 at 11 a.m. (Purple Room). They will also be actively looking for co-production and distribution partners for the show at MIPCOM.

Aimed at children aged five to seven, Maddie + Triggs began life as a 15-episode podcast series on RTÉjr Radio and follows the adventures of seven-year-old Maddie, who happens to have a vision impairment, and her doggy best friend, Triggs. Although Maddie cannot see the world around her so well, she is a really brilliant listener. Triggs is an adorable labradoodle retriever cross who loves music, mischief and doggy biscuits.

The TV series has been developed with support from the NCBI, Ireland’s blind charity, Irish pubcaster RTÉjr and Screen Ireland. Turnip + Duck aims to create a truly inclusive show whereby if two kids, one sighted and one vision impaired, sit down side by side to ‘watch’ it, neither will have a lesser experience.

The studio’s award-winning mixed-media series Critters TV has recently been picked up by Sky Kids in the U.K. and its preschool chemistry primer Atom Town is set to air on RTÉjr in late 2022. The company is looking to further expand its slate of in-house and third-party original IP, overseen by the expanded creative team, and working with both established and emerging writers and creative talent.

Two of these new series will be presented at Cartoon Forum in Toulouse (Sept. 19-22): preschool project Trotro & Zaza, based on Bénédicte Guettier’s illustrated books (Gallimard Jeunesse), and Dreamland, a teen/adult project in coproduction with La Chouette Compagnie, adapted from the manga of the same name (Pika Edition), which continues to win new fans.

“We are delighted to be in Toulouse this year with two projects which illustrate the diversity of our editorial line at Ellipse Animation. With this diversification, we will continue opening up new collaborations both in France and internationally. Our attendance at Cartoon Forum is a crucial step in this development strategy,” said Caroline Audebert, Managing Director of Ellipse Animation.

    Dreamland

Announced at the 2022 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, Dreamland is Ellipse Animation’s new teen/adult project developed through Dupuis Edition & Audiovisuel with La Chouette Compagnie and in partnership with ADN (Animation Digital Network, Média-Participations’ dedicated animation streaming platform). Mediatoon on board for international distribution.

This adaptation of the manga created by Reno Lemaire is published by Pika Edition (20 volumes published to date and almost 600,000 copies sold, volume 21 is coming out on 12 October), the 10 x 24’ 2D animation series will take the viewer into the world of Terrence. By day he is a simple high-school student, trying desperately to follow boring classes and to get together with Lydia, the girl he’s fallen for. He is also terrified of fire since his mother died in a house-fire when he was only 7 years old. One night, in his dreams, he overcomes his fear and manages to bring a fire under control. He becomes a traveller, a very particular type of dreamer who, every night when he is asleep, is taken to Dreamland…

“Convinced of the universal scope of the story developed by Reno Lemaire since 2006, we have dreamed for years of adapting the manga Dreamland at La Chouette. Now it’s come true, thanks to ADN and Ellipse Animation,” said series producer Sylvain Dos Santos of La Chouette Compagnie. “The whole team is thrilled to bring this story to the screen and show this incredible world of dreams to as many viewers as possible both in France and around the world.”

Audebert added, “We are buoyed up by the great interest expressed in this new project following the screening of the trailer in Annecy. We’ve had more than 165,000 views on YouTube, along with the hundreds of thousands of views on Twitter. Another positive sign is the Dreamland, conference organised by Pika Edition at Japan Expo on 14 July which was extremely well received. This is only the beginning and we have every reason to dream of success for Dreamland.”

Ellipse Animation will present “Dreamland: When a successful MangFra (manga made in France) becomes an anime” Weds., Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. in teh Blue Room, with Audebert, Dos Santos and screenwriter Antoine Maurel (Droners S2, ImagoMarblegen).

    Trotro & Zaza
    Trotro & Zaza

Trotro & Zaza is the latest iteration of a powerhouse IP of the past 20 years. The first series, which won the Unifrance Award for Audiovisual exports in 2017, is currently broadcast around the world, including on major platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. On YouTube, Trotro has generated more than 700 million views and gathered more than a million subscribers in the eight languages available.

This new series follows the famous little donkey at a time when he has to take on a massive new challenge: becoming a big brother to Zaza. Mediatoon will also be handling internatinoal distribution for this 2D preschool project.

“We are proud to accompany Trotro & Zaza in new stories crafted for younger audiences. These two endearing characters complete the family of iconic heroes from Ellipse Animation,” said Lila Hannou, VP Creative Development and Strategy at Ellipse Animation. “We know they have what it takes to reach the international success they deserve with children and their parents who have almost certainly enjoyed the first series.”

Throughout the 78 x 3’30″ episodes, Trotro will take on his new magical, gratifying and sometimes surprising role. He will have to share everything he learns, his emotions and even his toys! All sorts of important everyday activities between a brother and a sister will spice up their adventures and create a whole range of emotions shared by children the world over. All of this of course along with family love.

“I remember how happy I was to see Trotro animated and to hear his voice for the first time with the tests for the first series! I was on cloud nine! Now, he’s become a big brother and is back with his little sister Zaza, a mini-whirlwind who wants to have her say,” said Bénédicte Guettier, who wrote the books and is the graphic designer of the series.

“With adoration, arguments, messing around, mischief and affection, through their many adventures together they learn how to get to know each other and to find their own place. They have the keys for everything to go well, because even if ‘Trotro’s too funny,’ his little sister is ‘Zazadorable’!

“I love working on this new series with Gaëlle Guiny and Alexandre Coste: choosing the voices, finding the backgrounds, the bright colours, finalizing the outlines, the size of the eyes and the length of the ears, looking for the right gestures and expressions for the characters, and finally seeing them come to life!”

Hannou, Guettier, producer Gaëlle Guiny and director Alexandra Coste (Akissi: A Funny Little Brother) will present the Ellipse Animation pitch “Tratra & Zaza: A whole new preschool project based on a major property” on Thurs., Sept. 22 at 9:45 a.m. in the Blue Room at Cartoon Forum.

Weird Market Unveils WFest Short Films in Competition

Weird Market is nearing its 14th edition, with the Spanish pro animation, video games and new media event set to take place in Valencia for the first time from September 27 to October 2. Accreditatations are now open.

Organizers have announced the 38 works from 18 countries around the world that will compete in the WFest international short film festival, as well as the 12 companies that will be part of the recruitment day.

WFest is divided into two contests: national and international. The films can be seen free of charge (after going through the box office) at the Filmoteca de Valencia (Rialto Building) on Tuesday, September 27; Thursday, October 29; and Sunday, October 2.

    The Days That (Never) Were

The Spanish competition will contain 11 works — one of them, La Prima Cosa by Omar Al Abdul Razzak and Shira Ukrainitz in co-production with France. This documentary presented in Annecy shows the friendship between the only Israeli Orthodox Christian Arab clown and a Syrian girl who survived the war.

One of the hallmarks of this edition is the mix of emerging talent with established names such as Pedro Rivero. The winner of two Goya Awards (Birdboy and Birdboy: The Forgotten Children) is also the author of the script for The Platform, a feature film that has become a worldwide viral phenomenon. Rivero will arrive in Valencia with Kevin Iglesias to compete with The Days That (Never) Were. The production is endorsed by festivals such as San Sebastián, Sitges or Zinebi and has been selected internationally in the United States, Colombia, Croatia, Mexico, Turkey and Australia.

    Roped
    Roped

Among the works that will compete to be in the list of winners the last two Movistar+ Short Film Project Awards by Weird Market: He Ran Towards His Comrade by Genis Rigol and Roped by Carmen Córdoba. Two stories with a strong social charge, but from very different perspectives; while the first presents an elderly businessman in search of popularity that shows ethical and moral contradictions, the second presents the bonds between mother and daughter in a personal and intimate way. Córdoba’s first film, Roberto, won more than 160 national and international awards, including selection at 11 festivals that qualifying for the Oscars.

Current topics and conflicts will be very present in the film selection’s themes, with a clear example being The Heights by Alejandro Salgado, a multi-award-winning author who here sets his sights on the women porters on both sides of the Ceuta and Melilla borders. Muerte Murciélago by Carlos Saiz confronts the viewer with a child in an isolated town with toxic water, who begins to imagine his future far from there. Choche Hurtado brings Kokuruga #2, a short film that screened at Clermont Ferrand where its bitter humor and portrayal of the loss of innocence and the passage from childhood to preadolescence stood out.

    Good Night Mr. Ted

Suspense and noir style feature in Naive Mischief in Oak Paso by Manson and Marc Torres, Good Night Mr. Ted by Nicolás Solé and Phonorama by Alex Rey. Animator and comic-book artist Torres uses a reduced color palette for this work that transports the atmosphere of series such as American Crime Story or Twin Peaks. Solé uses black and white to immerse a teddy bear in a classic police drama. Finally, Rey blends a passion for cinema, illustration and animation into his own spin on a story inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window.

Local talent that will also be represented by Nicolás Petelski and his short film Hot Singles in Your Area. Petelski participated with his debut film A Table Game in the 2018 edition.

    Iizuna Fair
