Synopsis: It’s been over a decade since the sudden appearance of the “gates” — the paths that connect our world with a different dimension. Since then, certain humans have awakened to supernatural powers. We call these individuals “hunters.” Hunters make their living by using their powers to conquer dungeons inside the gates. In this world of tough customers, the low-ranked hunter Jinwoo Sung is known as “the weakest hunter of all mankind.” One day, Jinwoo gets fatally injured when he runs into high-rank double dungeons hidden within a low-rank dungeon. Just then, a mysterious quest window appears in front of him. On the verge of death, Jinwoo decides to accept the quest and starts leveling up… while the others aren’t.

“About six years ago when I was writing the very beginning of Solo Leveling, if someone had said to me, ‘The novel you wrote will become a comic,’ I bet I’d have told them to stop pulling my leg. But now, I’m told that it’ll be animated?! Seriously, stop pulling my leg!” said Chugong. “But these days, I’m feeling excited and thrilled. Since I’m still half-doubting that this is real, I want to see Jinwoo and the other characters get animated soon and feel relieved. I’ll keep working diligently while looking forward to that day.”

Solo Leveling is finally making its anime debut. It feels like only yesterday that we got the offer for the anime adaptation. I feel so overwhelmed when I think that the anime is really being created right now,” added DUBU. “This is all thanks to you fans who love and support Solo Leveling. I’m filled with gratitude. Thank you very much. Also, please support the animation production team. If this anime gives new enjoyment to the readers, I’ll be very happy.”

TRIGUN STAMPEDE Teaser Trailer Still 5 – ©2023 Yasuhiro Nightow, SHONENGAHOSHA _ TRIGUN STAMPEDE Project
TRIGUN STAMPEDE ©2023 Yasuhiro Nightow, SHONENGAHOSHA _ TRIGUN STAMPEDE Project

At the TRIGUN STAMPEDE Lock ‘n Load Panel!! on Saturday, July 2, attendees were shown the first look trailer teasing footage of a young Vash and his twin brother Knives, as well as Rem, who tries to send the brothers to safety. Time flies, and we see Vash grown up to be a wanted man with $$60 billion bounty on his head. A new key visual featuring Vash the Stampede also debuted for the newly announced anime series reboot that will be streaming on Crunchyroll in 2023.

Additionally the Japanese voice cast was announced, which included Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Vash Stampede, Junya Ikeda as Knives Millions, Tomoyo Kurosawa as Young Vash, Yumiri Hanamori as Young Knives and Maaya Sakamoto as Rem Saverem. It was also announced that Kenji Muto will direct the series.

Panelists on site included Yasuhiro Nightow (author), Kouji Tajima (concept artist), Kiyotaka Waki (producer, Orange), Yoshihiro Watanabe (producer, Orange) and Katsuhiro Takei (producer, Toho).

“Rather than simply tracing the original manga that started 27 years ago, we wanted to define the meaning of creating this work as an entertainment piece in this day and age. So Nightow-sensei, producers, and I talked again and again. In the far distant future, a spaceship lands on an unexplored planet called No Man’s Land. Reminiscent of the American Old West, the residents of No Man’s Land, who are the immigrants from Earth, create a new, free world where myriads of cultures and religions coexist, with guns in their hands. While it’s a fantasy, we wanted to illustrate a world that resonates with our reality. We feel close and are drawn to the characters who do whatever they please in that world.,” Muto shared during the panel.

“It’ll be a super cool battle-action series where outlaws, sheriffs and gunslingers are constantly blazing guns. And please sense the twin brothers’ clash of fate that lies underneath. It’s my directorial debut, so it might not be perfect. But I’m confident that it’s a ‘flawed-yet-attractive’ product. Please enjoy the journey of the invincible gunman Vash the Stampede, who never stops running away with no guns and no violence.”

For those who couldn’t make it to the panels or attend Anime Expo, Crunchyroll hosted daily recaps on its Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Channel, giving fans all the greatest highlights from each day, including panels, cosplay, fan interviews, collectible features, and so much more.

“I am proud to be working with Disney Branded Television on this groundbreaking new series featuring a female African American Marvel Super Hero, who is smart, funny, compassionate and a born leader,” said Saadiq, who has produced and co-written for top artists including Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Snoop Dogg, Solange Knowles, Mary J. In addition to dating more fun animated family series and movies for summer, Netflix will be deliverying more Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles to fans sometime soon with an all-new Season 2. Based on the classic Usagi Yojimbo comics created by Stan Sakai, the series follows Miyamoto Usagi’s teenage descendent, Yuichi, on his epic quest to become a true samurai. Together with his ragtag team of misfit heroes (and faithful pet lizard), Yuicui battles a variety of strange cyberpunk monsters in a futuristic yet classical version of Japan.

The series is produced with Gaumont, Dark Horse and Atomic Monster, led by exec producers Doug Langdale and Candie Kelty Langdale.

Kids and family audiences can also keep their eyes peeled for new animated preschool series Big Tree City and Deepa & Anoop, plus fresh batches of The Creature Cases (S2), Go, Dog, Go! (S3), Mighty Expess (S7) + Mighty Express Short Tracks and Team Zenko Go (S2), and the return of kids’ faves Angry Birds: Summer Madness (S3) and He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (S3).

    Duncanville

After a three-season run, Fox has canceled the Amy Poehler animated comedy Duncanville, which premiered its final episode this week (June 26).  Co-created by The Simpsons veterans Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, the series centers on a teenage boy who relies on his vivid imagination to help alleviate the humdrum days waiting for adulthood. Poehler voiced both Duncan and his mom, Annie.

“Mike Scully, Julie Thacker Scully and Amy Poehler delivered a unique animated family comedy with a distinct voice and point of view that we are proud of,” Fox said in a statement. “But we can confirm that this season will be its last on Fox. We look forward to the opportunity to work with Amy, Mike and Julie in the future.”

Despite Season 1 averaging 2.3 million multiplatform viewers and being Fox’s most-streamed new comedy for the season, as well as scoring the net’s most-streamed animated debut on record, the show lagged over this past season as the least watched Fox animated series, The Hollywood Reporter highlights. Duncanville averaged about 650K viewers with a week of delayed viewing for 2021-22 (exc. streaming).

    The Sea Beast OST

Ahead of its Netflix debut on Friday, July 8, Sony’s Milan Records has released an original sea shanty track from the animated family adventure flick, The Sea Beast. The movie features music by there-time Grammy-winning composer Mark Mancina, reuniting him with Moana director Chris Williams. The soundtrack is available for pre-order now.

With original lyrics by the acclaimed songwriting duo of Nell Benjamin and Laurence O’Keefe (Legally Blonde: The Musical, Mean Girls), “Captain Crow” (listen here) is an exuberant track written in the style of a Celtic sea shanty to accompany the onscreen story of seafaring monster hunters. With its large, lively chorus, rousing fiddle and a steady rhythm of handclaps, “Captain Crow” is the perfect soundtrack to life on the high seas. The song makes its debut today alongside an official lyric video.

“Every great sea adventure needs a great sea chanty. For this song, we looked to our ancestral Irish tradition of cheerfully bloodthirsty tunes with great melodies,” said Benjamin & O’Keefe. “Ironically, we’ve written cheerfully bloodthirsty songs before for musicals like Heathers and Mean Girls, but here was a chance to write one to be hollered in a dockside tavern. We hope sea dogs of all kinds will belt it until the oceans are safe or the pub closes.”

  • OddBot to Develop and Animate Trio of Critically Acclaimed Graphic Novels

OddBot to Develop and Animate Trio of Critically Acclaimed Graphic Novels

OddBot Inc., the production company behind Disney Junior’s Emmy Award-nominated CGI Muppet Babies, Netflix’s Action Pack and other hit programs, has optioned and plans to develop three graphic novels into animated series and a special. Each of the critically acclaimed titles — The Cardboard Kingdom, Séance Tea Party and The Okay Witch — is full of imagination and unafraid to take on real-life issues faced by kids as they come of age.

“Kids are growing up faster than ever today, and we love how these stories show them overcoming inherent obstacles through imagination and creativity,” said Chris Hamilton, President of OddBot. “They also feature stand-out characters that will resonate with both kids and their parents, strengthening bonds and initiating conversations.”

    Press Release V03 copy
OddBot is adapting ‘The Cardboard Kingdom,’ ‘Séance Tea Party” and ‘The Okay Witch’ into imaginative animated projects

The Cardboard Kingdom (11-minute CG/2D series) affirms the power of imagination and play during the most important years of adolescent identity-searching and emotional growth. Drawn and co-written by Chad Sell, its award-winning story touches on themes like family conflict, inner-strength and gender identity, as we meet a diverse neighborhood of kids who transform ordinary boxes into colorful costumes — knights and rogues, robots and monsters — creating adventures filled with humor and action.

Séance Tea Party (60-minute CG special), by Reimena Yee, is a beautiful, middle-grade graphic novel about the trials of growing up. In this fantastical story, 12-year-old Lora Xi wants to stay a kid forever, and she’ll do anything to make that happen… including befriending Alexa, the ghost who haunts her house. What follows is a journey of self-discovery as the lovable characters each realize what it means to be who you are.

The Okay Witch (22-minute CG series), based on the critically acclaimed graphic novel debut from Emma Steinkellner, is a story packed with humor and heart about the weird and wonderful adventures of a witch-in-progress. Thirteen-year-old Moth Hush learns the surprising truth about the history of her hometown and her family as she attempts to control her new powers. But with the help of her best friend (who has a secret of his own), her mom, a few good witches and her talking cat, Moth might just be okay.

OddBot is a prolific animation studio that has worked with a who’s who of networks and studios. In addition to producing three seasons of Muppet Babies with Disney Junior and Netflix’s popular preschool series Action Pack, OddBot was enlisted by Stampede Ventures to produce Mo Willems’ highly anticipated Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed: The Underground Rock Experience! — a stunning CGI-animated hour of “underground” music and comedy debuting June 30 on HBO Max’s Cartoonito.

Hamilton added,“While OddBot is known for our work in the preschool space, these three latest titles are fantastic additions to an already growing slate of kids and family projects with more complex, relatable storylines, and we’re excited to help them jump off the page where they’ll be enjoyed by new and existing fans alike onscreen.”

  • New Report Highlights Greater Need for Inclusivity & Diversity in Kids’ Media

New Report Highlights Greater Need for Inclusivity & Diversity in Kids’ Media

Family-focused marketing agency Kids Industries (Ki) launched a new report today exploring the concept of diversity and inclusion amongst children and their parents — and what this looks like in the media that they engage with.

The survey — carried out across 2,001 parents of children (aged 5-15) in the U.K. and U.S.A. — paints a picture of rising concerns from parents over screen time, yet also acknowledges how they appreciate the benefits of digital play. There is however a desire from parents for more inclusive media attributes.

“Play underpins everything that our children will become — it is, as Maria Montessori said, ‘The work of the child.’ Our research indicates that 67% of parents feel their children’s schools are good or excellent when it comes to their diversity and inclusion policies and approaches which shows there is much more work to be done,” commented Gary Pope, CEO & Co-Founder of (Ki) and Children’s Commisioner for Products of Change.

“We must listen to children and parent voices and ensure their needs and wants are reflected in the media that they consume. Nothing is more important than protecting and promoting a child’s right to play and making those play experiences the very best that they can be is essential and something that the industry needs to give serious consideration.”

Real world issues in TV and film

Children’s Media Consumption (Across TV & Film) Must Be More Inclusive

What parents notice: Almost three quarters of all parents questioned said that their child enjoys watching and listening to stories about characters who look or are different to them (67% in the U.K., 79% in the U.S.) and 64% said their child would like to see more characters who are like them in the media.

Key issue: Seventy-four percent of parents agree that their child learns about people who are different from them through the media they consume — yet alarmingly, 49% say that this media features many negative stereotypes of different groups (42% in the U.K., rising to 56% in the U.S.).

    Glitch-Tech
Eric Robles and Dan Milano’s ‘Glitch Techs’ (Nickelodeon/Netflix) was applauded for its diverse cast of gamer heroes triumphing through teamwork.

Moving forwards: Just over half of all U.K. and U.S. parents (53%) would like to see more positive role models in the media. Forty-one percent would also like to see more storylines that explain real-world issues to children — a similar figure as those who would like more ‘soft’ education content, e.g. problem solving (43%). Programs that involve traditional education, e.g. maths skills, appealed to 38% of parents.

In terms of representation, 26% of parents want to see equal gender representation (22% in the UK and 30% in the U.S.) and 29% expressed a desire for more ethnically diverse characters — again, higher amongst U.S. parents (33%).

Better disability representation was requested by 23% of parents and 12% would like to see increased LGBTQ+ representation.

    El Deafo
Based on CeCe Bell’s autobiographical graphic novel,  Humanitas Prize-nominated ‘El Deafo’ (Apple TV+) takes a creative approach to demonstrating disability challenges for young viewers.

Subtitles or Closed Captions (CC) Appeal to Both Disabled and Non-Disabled Children

What parents notice: Seventy-four percent of U.S. parents reported that their child watches content with subtitles or closed captions (CC) — with 24% choosing to use them all or most of the time. This compares with 54% in the U.K. using subtitles or CC and nine percent using them all of the time. Half of U.S. and U.K. parents (50%) of parents said that their child needed subtitles/CC to enjoy media content.

    The Owl House
Dana Terrace’s Peabody Award-winning ‘The Owl House’ broke new ground for Disney with its first leading same-sex couple (and their first kiss)!

  • DeAPlaneta and GO-N Team Up for ‘Monster Shaker’

DeAPlaneta and GO-N Team Up for ‘Monster Shaker’

DeAPlaneta and GO-N Productions, a French production company with over 15 years’ experience in creating animation for children and exploiting their own IP, have signed an agreement to coproduce Monster Shaker, a new TV series adaptation of the books by Mr. Tan and Mathilde Domecq, published by Editions Gallimard.

Monster Shaker (52 x 13’) is an epic adventure comedy, in which nine-year-old Justin discovers his grandfather’s very unusual cocktail shaker. This fabulous thing allows him to create extraordinary (and extraordinarily crazy) creatures with incredible powers, but it must be kept secret, no matter what, in case it falls into the wrong hands…

It would of course be safest to leave the shaker alone, but Justin is constantly overcome by the temptation to experiment, to play with these hilarious monsters, and to use their magical skills in all kinds of everyday situations. Justin and Gwen (his 12-year-old sister) get into all kinds of adventures that leave them with no choice but to reach some kind of deal. So they can join forces to save the day. And get those crazy monsters back inside the shaker!

Aimed at kids ages six to 10, the first season of 52 episodes will launch on TV in France in 2023. The accompanying YouTube channel will broadcast selected episodes.

DeAPlaneta and GO-N Productions are focused on producing and distributing Monster Shaker, while also working on key initial categories, including shaker toys and collectible cocktail shakers complete with all the crazy monsters turning our heroes lives upside down.

Internationally recognized as an animation production and distribution pioneer, GO-N Productions is a full autonomous studio based in Paris. In operation for 15 years, the studio has produced popular series such as Simon, Zip Zip and Tootuff. Through GO-N International, the company also sells animated content for kids and families for all platforms around the world.

DeAPlaneta Entertainment has acquired, produced and distributed content for over 20 years, working on everything from feature films, live-action series, animation and licensing to live performances, video game competitions, NFTs and a metaverse presence. It also manages and produces renowned kids and family brands including Miraculous Ladybug, Milo, Gormiti, Heidi and Maya the Bee.

  • Crunchyroll Scoops Global Rights to ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime’ Movie

Crunchyroll Scoops Global Rights to ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime’ Movie

Crunchyroll today announced it has acquired the global distribution and marketing rights (excluding Asia) from Kodansha for the upcoming theatrical release of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond. The film debuts in Japan in November 2022 and will be distributed in all major global territories in early 2023.

The film is based on the best-selling light novel, written by Fuze and illustrated by Mitz Vah, and the popular fantasy-adventure anime series That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

The series follows Minami Satoru, an average 37-year-old who dies and is reincarnated as the most unremarkable creature imaginable — a slime. Initially, things are pretty grim. He’s blind, deaf, and weak. But by combining his two special abilities, “Predator” and “Great Sage,” the newly named Rimuru Tempest will use his blobby powers to gain both friends and foes alike in a diverse new world.

The movie’s stand-alone story takes place following the ending of Season 2 of the anime series. More details will be revealed in the coming months.

“The series remains a fan favorite with Crunchyroll audiences, and we’re thrilled to continue the adventures with the theatrical release of the film early next year on the big screen,” said Mitchel Berger, Crunchyroll’s Senior Vice President of Global Commerce.

Synopsis: A long-running conspiracy is swirling over a mysterious power known as “Queen” in Raja, a small country west of Tempest. When a slime who evolved into a Demon Lord named Rimuru Tempest crosses paths with Hiiro, a survivor of the Ogre race, an incredible adventure packed with new characters begins. The power of bonds will be put to the test!
