Toonz Teams with ‘Ainbo’ Studio Tunche for ‘Kayara’

Peruvian animation studio Tunche Films has partnered with global animation major Toonz Media Group to co-produce Kayara through its Spain-based Fortoon Island, following the worldwide success of Tunche’s Ainbo – Spirit of the Amazon. The CGI film is set amidst the Inca civilization and, like Ainbo, follows an adventurous female lead.

“It is, indeed, a privilege for Toonz to partner with Tunche Films for this very ambitious project which has its roots firmly placed in ancient, indigenous wisdom and modern, progressive values at the same time,” said Toonz Media Group CEO P. Jayakumar. “Apart from bringing on screen a strong female character, Kayara also provides us the unique opportunity to collaborate in a truly international project that brings together teams from diverse cultures across the world.”

Carlos Biern, the Group’s President of Animation Production & Co-Production, added, “Kayara is the story of a heroine who changed the role of women in many ways. Her epic journey follows situations and characters that can be easily identified by today’s audience, even though the story is set 500 years ago. We are very honored to bring it to life in our Spanish speaking animation industry, together with the award-winning Tunche studio.”

Kayara centers on a young Inca woman who aspires to join the Chasqui Messengers — an elite, male-only league of official messengers in the Incan Empire. In her quest to be the first female Chasqui Messenger, Kayara courageously overcomes arduous obstacles, while also discovering the ancient stories of her land and her people.

Directed by César Zelada (Together It’s Possible), the movie has attracted Beverly Hills-based international sales company Cinema Management Group (CMG) as executive producer and sales agent. CMG was instrumental in bringing Toonz and Tunche together, and has already licensed the film extensively around the globe to blue-chip distributors.

“We worked with Dutch co-producers on Ainbo and the cultural exchange between our Peruvian team and the Dutch was very helpful to our creating an indigenous story with a worldwide appeal,” noted Zelada. “We are looking forward to an exciting synergy in working with the Spanish based team with Toonz.”

Edward Noeltner, President of CMG, said, “After the positive experience of working with Toonz on animated feature The Canterville Ghost and the good collaboration we’ve had with Tunche Films on Ainbo, we are delighted to have brought these two exceptional teams together for an exciting new production.”

CMG has already pre-sold Kayara to 15 international distributors including Le Pacte (France), WW Entertainment (Benelux), Praesens (Switzerland), Front Row (Middle East), Rialto Distribution (Australia/New Zealand) and CDC (Latin America) among others. The family feature is set to release in 2024.

TV & Streaming: ‘Team Zenko Go’ Clips, ‘Woke’ S2, ‘Dragon Ball’ Hits Crunchyroll & More

DreamWorks Animation and Mainframe Studios‘ brand-new preschool series Team Zenko Go has officially launched on Netflix, where the gadget-savvy do-gooders are leaping into action to do random acts of kindness in their community. “In this social media crazed world, where people always record everything they do, we wanted to make the point that helping someone in need is something you should do because it’s the right thing to do, not because it will make you famous or get you ‘likes,’” said executive producer and showrunner Jack Thomas.

One of the main characters, Ari, uses a wheelchair and is voiced by Hartley Bernier, who has lived with Intestinal Failure due to Total Hirschsprung’s Disease since birth, and also occasionally uses a wheelchair due to chronic pain. “Growing up I never saw anyone like me on TV and there aren’t a lot of characters who have disabilities represented,” said Bernier. “Casting an actor with a disability helps to make the character more authentic. For instance, my character, Ari and I share many things in common like our love for comic books and superhero movies. And even though we both rely on medical technology because of our medical complexities, we don’t let that get in the way of doing the things that we want to do.”

Bernier, Thomas and other members of the team recently talked to RespectAbility about Team Zenko Go — you can watch the conversation on Facebook.

Season 2 of Hulu original comedy series Woke is ready to drop eight new episodes on Friday, April 8. Based on the life and work of cartoonist Keith “Keef” Knight, the show uses random animated object to give voice to the lead character’s very creative anxieties as he tries to navigate life as a Black nerd, artist and activist (don’t even think “artivist.”)

In S2, Keef (Lamorne Morris) is now a popular activist on the rise, but he’s facing a world where “woke” has become big business. Can Keef and his friends bring about real change, or is it just about the dollar$? And can Keef navigate this new world without destroying what he’s become?

  • Trailer: Disney+ Presents Instructive Drawing Series ‘Sketchbook’

Disney+ invites viewers to a one-of-a-kind drawing experience in the all-new, six-part Original Series Sketchbook with Walt Disney Animation Studios, streaming April 27.

From Supper Club (Chef’s Table) and in partnership with WDAS, audiences will be given an insider’s look into the animation process as some of the Studios’ talented artists teach them how to draw beloved Disney characters, including Kuzco from The Emperor’s New Groove, Olaf from Frozen, Genie from Aladdin, Captain Hook from Peter Pan, Mirabel from Encanto and young Simba from The Lion King.

An intimate, instructional documentary series, Sketchbook takes audiences onto the desks and into the lives of talented artists and animators as they explain how to draw a single iconic character from a Disney film. Each episode focuses on a single artist illustrating a character that either they helped create or inspired them to want to be an artist at the Studio. Along with the steps to drawing these characters, the artists each share a unique story about how they made their way to Disney and their chosen character.

“This series is an unprecedented look at what it takes to bring these beloved characters to life,” says Jason Sterman, director & executive producer, Supper Club. “We are honored to feature this incredible group of artists who trusted us not only with presenting their skillset, but with sharing their personal, and often emotional, stories with the world. We’re looking forward to audiences becoming inspired to hopefully pick up a pencil and put it to paper themselves.”

“Think back to your favorite films from Walt Disney Animation Studios, whether from our earliest days, the films of our 1990s renaissance or the award-winning films of today like Encanto and Frozen, every film starts with an idea, a pencil and an artist. And within the thousands of artists who have created our 60 films over the last century, every person has a unique and special story,” says series executive producer Amy Astley, SVP Publicity/Communications, Creative Legacy & Brand Strategy, WDAS.

“It was an honor to partner with Supper Club, whose projects such as Chef’s Table create beautifully captured, intimate portraits of talented people. With Sketchbook, our hope is to demystify the art of drawing, making it accessible for anyone who wants to pick up a pencil and paper while deepening an appreciation for the individuals who contribute to our films.”

The characters and artists featured in the series include:

    • The Emperor’s New Groove “Kuzco”Gabby Capili’s path to Disney Animation began at a young age when she saw her first Disney film in a theater with her father, The Emperor’s New Groove. As Gabby teaches us how to draw her favorite character from the film, “Kuzco,” she also shares the importance of following your instincts and being free to let life guide you where you belong.
    • Frozen “Olaf” — While teaching us to draw one of Disney Animation’s most beloved characters, “Olaf” from the worldwide hit Frozen films, Hyun-min Lee shares the joyful wonder of the character and how she channeled personal loss into being a guiding light in her career in animation.

    • Encanto “Mirabel” — Disney Animation story artist Samantha Vilfort teaches us how to draw one of the Studio’s newest characters, “Mirabel Madrigal,” from the award-winning hit film Encanto. Through her story we learn that her connection to Mirabel’s struggle of being different from everyone else in her family hits close to home.
    • The Lion King “Simba” — Storied Disney animator Mark Henn teaches us how to draw one of his favorite character designs, “Young Simba” from The Lion King. Through Mark’s story, we learn the importance of never giving up on your dreams, even in the face of rejection.

  • Riot Games Invests in ‘Arcane’ Animation Studio Fortiche

Riot Games Invests in ‘Arcane’ Animation Studio Fortiche

In the wake of the show’s nine-win triumph at this weekend’s Annie Awards, League of Legends developer and publisher Riot Games (riotgames.com) announced a new equity investment in Fortiche Productions (forticheprod.com), the France & Spain-based animation studio behind breakout LoL series Arcane. Under the terms of the investment, which closed earlier this year, Riot now holds a significant non-controlling stake in Fortiche.

Brian Wright (Chief Content Officer at Riot) and Brendan Mulligan (Director of Corporate Development at Riot) have also joined Fortiche’s board of directors.

Riot and Fortiche have partnered in creating new experiences for LoL players for nearly a decade, first collaborating on the music video “Get Jinxed” (featuring Djerv) to celebrate the launch of the League champion (and star of Arcane) Jinx. Other notable collaborations include: “WARRIORS” and “Enemy” (both featuring Imagine Dragons); “Seconds” (a cinematic showcasing Ekko, who also appears in Arcane); “POP/STARS” (featuring Madison Beer, (G)I-DLE and Jaira Burns as the virtual K-pop band K/DA); and “RISE” (the anthem for the 2018 League of Legends World Championship featuring Glitch Mob, Mako and The Word Alive).

Fortiche worked closely with Riot during the early ideation and storyboard development of Arcane and has been a key partner throughout the development of the show. The two companies are currently collaborating on the second season of Arcane, as well as other to-be-announced projects.

Arcane premiered at #1 globally on Netflix in November 2021 and held the top spot for three weeks in a row, hitting the top 10 in over 52 countries and maintaining a rare 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series has just won nine Annie Awards, making it the most-nominated and awarded TV show of the year, with wins including Best TV/Media General Audience, Best Character Design and Best Writing. “Enemy,” the single by Imagine Dragons from the original sound track, has reached over 1 billion streams and hit #1 on the Billboard rock chart.

“The various collaborations with Riot Games, and especially Arcane, have made Fortiche Production a new major player on the international animation scene. Riot Games, by trusting us, has given us the means to achieve our common ambitions and has shown that it is possible to offer new content that can reach a large audience,” said Pascal Charrue, Jérôme Combe & Arnaud Delord, co-founders of Fortiche. “In 2023, we will celebrate 10 years of collaboration: there is no better way to symbolize the trust and ambitions of our two companies than this association!”

Nicolo Laurent, CEO of Riot, commented, “Fortiche has been an integral partner for a long time, but this agreement ensures we’ll be working closely for decades to come. We hold a high bar for everyone we work with and insist they understand players deeply and focus on them relentlessly, and from day one, Fortiche has exemplified Player Experience First. In working with Fortiche, we collaborate to push the boundaries of what’s possible and raise expectations for how games can be represented in media. As proud as we are of Arcane, we know the best is yet to come.”

Fortiche, which now includes 350 employees and collaborators in Paris, Montpellier, and Las Palmas, Spain, will remain operationally independent from Riot aside from Riot’s positions on the board of directors. The company leadership team includes co-founders Charrue, Combe and Delord Arnaud, as well as Hervé Dupont, appointed Managing Director.

Arcane is available worldwide on Netflix and Tencent Video in China. Read more about the series in Animation Magazine‘s March ’22 feature story here.

  • Nexus Powers Real-Time Animated ‘Vox Machina’ Q&A for Season Finale

Nexus Powers Real-Time Animated ‘Vox Machina’ Q&A for Season Finale

To toast the conclusion of the first season of Prime Video’s adult comedy-adventure The Legend of Vox Machina, Nexus Studios teamed up with Amazon Studios to connect fans with the lovable Critical Role mercenaries Grog and Scanlan, beamed from a virtual tavern to real-world screens.

Nexus Studios tapped into real-time technology to open an exciting new chapter in the live animation space. In this first of its kind event, Travis Willingham (Grog) and Sam Riegel (Scanlan) performed as their animated characters live to a global audience and responded in real-time to questions from fans during the show’s Finale Watch Party.

The Legend of Vox Machina watch party
The Legend of Vox Machina / Critical Role cast at the Finale Watch Party. Top L-R: Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham; bottom L-R): Matt Mercer, Ashley Johnson, Taliesin Jaffe.

“Real-Time digital puppetry promises to transform the production of linear animated content in years to come, allowing more creative freedom, spontaneity and accessibility for creators with more iterative turnarounds,” said Julia Parfitt, Executive Producer, Nexus Studios. “We are super proud to have pioneered this technology and enabled Grog and Scanlan to entertain their cult fandom with a unique unscripted performance.”

An audience of over 20,000 tuned in to the Finale Watch Party on the day, and a further 300,000+ caught up with it post-premiere, and the tooned up twist for this capstone virtual event won praise from many fans commenting.

The Legend of Vox Machina real time
Nexus Studios’ real-time process allowed Willingham and Riegel to puppet articulated hand motions and facial expressions onto their animated characters, Grog and Scanlan.

Developed by the Real-Time division at Nexus Studios and led by Oscar winner Patrick Osborne, the team took motion capture beyond its typical capabilities by developing a system to stylize actor movements in real time, better matching the appeal of hand-animated content. These advances allow actors to match the intent of their performance with the expressiveness of animation.

Further, a suite of rendering tricks were used to match the live 3D performance with the series’ 2D aesthetic. The whole approach was designed to counter the uncanny nature of unfiltered animation data applied to graphic characters, and bring a new level of craft and artistry to this process.

The Legend of Vox Machina is available to stream on Prime Video. Learn more about Nexus Studios’ work at nexusstudios.com.

  • Annecy Festival Selects 38 Shorts for Competition

Annecy Festival Selects 38 Shorts for Competition

The Annecy Festival selection committee has announced the Official Selection for 2022. This year, more than 1,347 short films were submitted for consideration (152 more than in 2021) from a hundred countries. With male and female directors equally represented, the selection breaks down into:

    • 38 films in the Official competition
    • Eight in the Off-Limits category
    • 17 in Perspectives
    • Nine in Young Audience

“In recent years, we have noticed a strong trend in short film productions. Generally, they are increasingly longer, and sometimes with higher ambitious narratives. The 2022 Selection reflects this development as there are fewer films than usual. This means, even more so than previous years, that our team had to make tough choices and not include some quality works,” said Marcel Jean, Artistic Director.

“In the end, we believe that it’s a diverse selection with a fine balance between new blood and works from established artists: Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby, Anna Budanova, Špela Čadež, Kōji Yamamura, Claude Luyet, etc. This year, regarding the films’ origins, we noticed that the United States and Japan had a burst of dynamism in independent productions, and by happy coincidence, as we pay tribute to Swiss cinematography, the Swiss films are top notch. Lastly, we are thrilled with the selection of Blind Spot, by the Tunisian Lofti Achour, and Akplokplobito, by Franco-Togolese Ingrid Agbo, two films that show the vibrancy of African animation, that we honored last year.”

Netflix and Dr. Seuss Enterprises today announced they will bring some of the most iconic and beloved stories and characters of Dr. Seuss to life with five new animated preschool series and specials. The announcement expands the partnership even further, following the launch of the critically acclaimed animated series Green Eggs and Ham in 2019, which will have its anticipated second season premiere April 8.

The projects are inspired by treasured stories like Horton Hears a Who!; The Sneetches; One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish; and Wacky Wednesday, in addition to lovable characters like Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose. Executive producer Dustin Ferrer (Esme & Roy, Shimmer & Shine, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood) will serve as showrunner across all five, and additional showrunners will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Read on for a quick summary of the greenlit projects below.

The new Dr. Seuss line-up will serve as a true anchor for Netflix’s expanded focus on preschool. Introducing concepts of foundational learning, this new slate of programming will explore themes of diversity and respect for others all told through fun and engaging stories that incorporate the whimsical humor, distinctive visuals and rhythmic style of Dr. Seuss.

“Netflix is a trusted home for characters kids love, and generations of kids love the characters imagined by Dr. Seuss. These beloved stories have been a core part of families’ libraries for many years and it gives me great pride that we are bringing them to our catalog of Netflix shows, in a fresh and modern way that resonates with audiences today,” said Heather Tilert, Director of Preschool Content, Netflix.

Susan Brandt, President & CEO of Dr. Seuss Enterprises, added, “Dr. Seuss Enterprises is proud of the collaborative relationship we share with Netflix. We are always looking for new and engaging ways to share our stories, characters and messages with the next generation of fans, and Netflix has a unique ability to create original, delightful adaptations of our timeless classics with an emphasis on imagination, fun, and education. • ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ Trailer Recounts the Nine Lives of the Leche Whisperer

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ Trailer Recounts the Nine Lives of the Leche Whisperer

On the bootheels of yesterday’s first look and cast reveal Universal Pictures has launched the official trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The first feature film from the Shrek universe since the furry hero’s solo spin-off in 2011, The Last Wish looks to be a carryover of classic DWA style melding with the snappy, graphic animation aesthetic of today’s CGI blockbusters.

Brought to the screen by the team behind The Croods: A New Age, director Joel Crawford and producer Mark Swift, the fearless feline outlaw’s new adventure begins when Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, though he lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots on his grandest quest yet.

Antonio Banderas returns as the voice of the notorious PiB as he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Soft Paws (Salma Hayek). Aided — against their better judgment — by a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillén), our heroes will have to stay one step ahead of Goldilocks (Florence Pugh) and the Three Bears Crime Family, “Big” Jack Horner (John Mulaney) and terrifying bounty hunter, The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura).

The voice cast also features Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo, Anthony Mendez and Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Chris Meledandri serves as executive producer.

    Breonna's Garden
    Breonna’s Garden

Last year, in solidarity with Breonna Taylor’s family, artist and curator Lady Pheønix developed Breonna’s Garden, a revolutionary framework for veneration through augmented reality (AR). Now, less than a full year later, the project is providing virtual safe spaces to larger audiences through fully immersive VR.

The development of the project began after Lady Pheønix learned that Ju’Niyah Palmer (Breonna’s younger sister) was receiving death threats while publicly grieving her sister’s murder on Instagram. After speaking with Ju’Niyah, it was apparent that she not only needed a safe space to process her grief; but so did entire online communities that supported Breonna. The Garden has evolved from a healing tool for Ju’Niyah and her family into a healing tool for the nation.

Following successes at Tribeca Film Festival, the Perez Art Museum Miami, Breonna’s Garden blossoms in Austin during SXSW this week (march 13-15). The new VR and volumetric content marks the beginning of an innovative approach to storytelling in AltspaceVR that has never been seen before. In situ, audiences hear stories about Breonna’s passion for helping others and have the chance to read heart-felt letters from supporters from all over the world.

  • Illumination’s ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ to Open Annecy

Illumination’s ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ to Open Annecy

As the esteemed Annecy Festival charts a course to its 2022 live edition after last year’s hybrid event, organizers announce that Illumination Entertainment’s little yellow mischief makers are returning to the lakeside animation celebration for the World Premiere of Minions: The Rise of Gru. After COVID-related delays, the eagerly awaited prequel will at last debut as part of the festival’s Opening Ceremony, screening in the Grande Salle de Bonlieu on Monday, June 13.

“The Minions franchise is inextricably linked to Annecy,” said Marcel Jean, Artistic Director of the festival. “As early as 2010, Despicable Me made its mark at the event, and since then each film in the series has started its success here. Annecy’s enthusiastic audience is the best there is to uproariously celebrate the return of this happy crew who is the symbol of success for Illumination.”

Directed by Kyle Balda, co-directed by Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val, and produced by Illumination founder & CEO Chis Meledandri, Janet Healy and Chris Renaud, Minions: The Rise of Gru reveals the untold origin story of how the world’s greatest supervillain, first met his iconic Minions, forged the cinema’s most despicable crew and faced off against the unstoppable criminal supergroup, the Vicious 6.

Henson, Michelle Yeoh, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Russell Brand, Alan Arkin, RZA and Julie Andrews as Gru’s mother, Marlena.

“We are hoping to see the public return in large numbers to cinema theaters and we all need frivolity and laughter. This is why Minions: The Rise of Gru seemed the perfect film for us to open the Festival’s 2022 edition,” added Jean. “It is also the opportunity for the Festival to highlight both French and American expertise. We thank Illumination and Universal Pictures for offering this wonderful gift to the festival-goers.”

Universal will release Minions: The Rise of Gru on July 1, and in cinemas across France on July 6.

  • Toonstar Tags In Mila Kunis’ Sixth Wall for Wrestling NFT Series ‘The Gimmicks’

Toonstar Tags In Mila Kunis’ Sixth Wall for Wrestling NFT Series ‘The Gimmicks’

Web3 animation studio Toonstar and Sixth Wall, the digital arm of Mila Kunis’ Orchard Farm Productions, today announced the launch of The Gimmicks, a Web3 enabled, community-driven animated NFT series powered by Solana. Described as “South Park meets WWE,” the adult animated series centers on a group of washed up wrestlers trying to regain their status.

The series is voiced by former WWE stars Luke “Doc” Gallows, Karl “Machine Gun” Anderson, FKA Enzo Amore and Rocky Romero, and is written by “The Daves”: Dave Ihlenfeld and David Wright (Family Guy, The Simpsons).

The Gimmicks utilizes NFT technology to give fans a chance to participate in character and storyline development. At the end of each episode, a “choose your own adventure” option will be voted on by NFT holders, influencing future episodes and character arcs. NFT holders will also have the opportunity to interact with other fans via an on-chain social layer. This interactive social layer will connect to the holder’s NFT, and actions will be recorded on-chain as proof of community engagement.

    The Gimmicks

“Toonstar absolutely gets the ridiculously fast nature of creating in Web3,” said Mila Kunis. “They are able to make animation at unprecedented speed while also managing creative community elements; I can’t wait for people to come and engage in the fun.”

“As veterans in the animation industry, we know how invested the audience can get in storylines and characters. Working on the blockchain gives us a chance to engage with the community in ways never possible before,” said John Attanasio, CEO & Co-Founder, Toonstar. “We’re thrilled to see The Gimmicks launch and are looking forward to giving other new voices an animation platform.”

In an effort to open up this medium to new fans and the “crypto-curious,” NFTs will be free to mint and available on March 18 via The Gimmicks website. The NFTs are powered by the Solana blockchain to ensure an environmentally conscious use of crypto technology. On Solana, the minting of one NFT takes less energy than two Google searches or one Instagram post, according to the announcement.
