Studio 100 Takes a Bite Out of ‘Vegesaurs’

Studio 100 Media is going back through the mists of time into an era dominated by the juiciest and crunchiest creatures ever to rule the planet: the mighty “Vegesaurs.” The action-comedy CGI-animated TV series (20 x 5’) is produced by independent Australian producer Cheeky Little for the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) and France TV. Principal production funding is provided by Screen Australia, with Studio 100 as co-investor.

Based on a concept created by Gary Eck and Nick O’Sullivan, the series is targeted at preschoolers and planned for delivery in 2022. ABC will broadcast it in Australia under the title Ginger & the Vegesaurs. Studio 100 Media is responsible for the worldwide distribution of content and licensing & merchandising rights.

Vegesaurs are vegetable and fruit-shaped dinosaurs ready to address and teach relatable themes for upper preschoolers such as getting to sleep, sharing, friendship, nurturing mealtimes and play. The lead character Ginger, a young Tricarrotops (carrot), and her Vegesaur friends including P(ea)-Rex, Cornasaurus (corn), Bananaraptor, Coconutdon, Broccolisaurus, Bokchoydactyl, Tomatodon, Appleflyrus and Potatodon, are here to enrich and enhance the imagination.

  • Bono Takes the Stage in New ‘Sing 2’ Trailer from Illumination

Bono Takes the Stage in New ‘Sing 2’ Trailer from Illumination

The next chapter in one of Illumination’s smash hit franchises is ready to step into the spotlight this holiday season, with Universal Pictures raising the curtain on a second, star-powered trailer for Sing 2. The sequel is written and directed by returning filmmaker Garth Jennings and features new characters played by music superstars Bono and Pharrell Williams, Black Panther’s Letitia Wright and comedians Eric André and Chelsea Peretti.

In Sing 2, Buster (Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey) has turned the New Moon Theater into a local hit, but Buster has his eyes on a bigger prize: Debuting a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater in glamorous Redshore City. But with no connections, Buster and his cast — including harried mother Rosita (Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon), rocker Ash (Scarlett Johansson), earnest Johnny (Taron Egerton), shy Meena (Tori Kelly) and, of course, provocateur Gunter (Nick Kroll) — have to sneak their way into the world-famous Crystal Entertainment offices, run by ruthless mogul Jimmy Crystal (Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale).

In a desperate attempt to get Mr. Crystal’s attention, Gunter spontaneously pitches an outrageous idea that Buster quickly runs with, promising that their new show will star rock legend Clay Calloway (Bono). Problem is, Buster has never met Clay, an artist who shut himself away from the world more than a decade ago after the loss of his wife. Even worse, Buster has failed to realize that Mr. Crystal is an egocentric gangster who would rather drop somebody off the roof of a building than be lied to.

As Gunter helps Buster dream up an out-of-this-world theatrical masterpiece, and the pressure (and sinister threats) from Mr. Crystal mount, Rosita’s leading role in the show gets ripped away and handed to Mr. Crystal’s spoiled daughter, Porsha, played by Grammy-nominated artist Halsey. Desperate to save the show, and his life, Buster embarks on a quest to find Clay and persuade him to return to the stage. What begins as a dream of big-time success becomes an emotional reminder of the power of music to heal even the most broken heart.

The film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Janet Healy. Sing 2 combines dozens of hit songs from pop to rock, K-pop to Latin, and from artists including Billie Eilish, Drake, U2, The Weeknd, Prince, Taylor Swift, BTS, Cardi B, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello.

Tickets are available now for early access Sing 2 screenings on November 27 at www.singmovie.com.

Canadian-U.S. multicultural children’s entertainment company, bulbKIDZ (Gopher It!, TuTiTi, NuNi) has partnered with St. Louis-based, Academy Award-winning studio Lion Forge Animation (Hair Love) to co-develop and produce the original animated comedy, Alien Baby Sitters (26 x 22’).

“We are thrilled to be partnering with the incredibly accomplished Lion Forge team on this comical, yet extremely relevant, premise,” says Nancy Koff, Co-Founder and EVP Content Strategy & Global Sales, bulbKIDZ. “The opportunity to play off today’s worldly news on UFOs, and play up related urban myths into the narrative, enhances our ability to think outside the toybox while recognizing that friends come in all shapes, sizes and species.”

“With news stories constantly surfacing regarding declassified government documents and how they spark everyone’s imagination, Alien Baby Sitters couldn’t come at a better time,” says Carl Reed, Chief Creative Officer of Lion Forge Animation. “After knowing Nancy and Kiersten for many years, together with our commitment to diverse content, we are thrilled to be developing this especially timely sitcom under their bulbKIDZ venture.”

Working with industry veterans, Kaaren Lee Brown (Super Monsters, S.M.A.S.H!, Tarzan and Jane, Roswell Conspiracies: Aliens, Myths & Legends) and Robert N. Skir (GoGoBus & Team S.T.E.A.M., Team S.T.E.A.M. Beyond!, X-Men), this series co-venture is currently in development, planned for Spring 2023.

Aimed at kids six to 11, the 2D animated series Alien Baby Sitters follows three tweenaged best friends who use their babysitting skills – and the mysterious abilities of four adorable and indestructible alien babies – to protect the small town of Plainview from a group of villainous (and hilarious!) mad scientists.

    Alien Baby Sitters
    Alien Baby Sitters

Alien Baby Sitters is a hilarious mashup of Rugrats meets Power Puff Girls, with a hint of Dexter’s Laboratory,” says Kiersten Halstead, Co-Founder and EVP Creative Development and Global Operations, bulbKIDZ. “We’re taking the global appeal of these classic successes that lacked representation during their heyday and making our original series relevant to today’s landscape. What better way to achieve this than to work with the trailblazing, award-winning Lion Forge.”

“At the heart of our multicultural cast of characters, Alien Baby Sitters proves that entertainment can be found amongst binkies, bottles, and things that go boom!” says Brown.

Skir adds, “Rock solid friendships and rocket-fueled adventures occur in this perfectly normal town where strangely abnormal things happen.”

  • Disney Orders Natasha Kline’s ‘Primos’ Mexican-American Family Comedy

Disney Branded Television has ordered Primos, an original animated comedy series created and executive produced by Natasha Kline (director on Big City Greens, South Park). The story, based on Kline’s childhood experiences with her extended multicultural Mexican-American family, introduces Tater, an eccentric 10-year-old girl with big dreams and, unbeknownst to her, a certain “it factor” that makes her exceptional. When her 12 cousins (“primos” in Spanish) move in for the summer, they help her discover just what it is.

Primos is set in childhood summers spent with my cousins under one roof, and the comedy that’s borne from that wonderfully hectic setting,” shared Kline. “As a kid, I didn’t see myself or my culture represented onscreen, so I’m excited to share my family dynamic through these new Disney characters and stories.”

Meredith Roberts, SVP/General Manager, Television Animation, Disney Branded Television, said, “It’s been especially gratifying to see Natasha directing more than 30 episodes of our #1 series Big City Greens while also creating her own new show that bears her authentic comedic voice and her family’s culture and values. We’re looking forward to delivering it to kids and families worldwide.”

Produced by Disney Television Animation, each half-hour Primos episode consists of two 11-minute stories. Tater’s aspirations and larger-than-life imagination are seen via entries in her super-secret diary, which turn her deepest thoughts into grandiose animation sequences.

  • The Nuttery Developing ‘Hakan Brakan’ for Animation

The Nuttery Developing ‘Hakan Brakan’ for Animation

Karlstad, Sweden and Toronto, Canada-based animation studio The Nuttery Entertainment has signed an exclusive agreement with Storytel, one of the world’s largest audiobook publishers, for the animated and ancillary rights for the Swedish kids’ IP Håkan Bråkan. Under the deal, this legacy property with over 30 standalone books is making the jump into animation for the first time.

“It is humbling and an incredible privilege to work on such an amazing IP as Håkan Bråkan. This kid is the standout character in the highly successful Andersson Family universe, combining heart, curiosity, imagination and crazy antics,” said Magnus Jansson, co-founder & CEO of Nuttery Entertainment. “Can’t wait for kids all over the world to fall in love with the unique hero that Sören and Anders have created!”

The IP centers on Håkan, the younger brother of Sune Andersson of the Sune book series. While he is really a kind and caring little boy, his puckish ingenuity often causes trouble for himself and others —  leading Sune to nickname him “Håkan Bråkan” (Håkan the Troublemaker). The impish character appeared in his first standalone book in 1998, starring in a live-action series produced by SVT in 2003 along with a follow-up live-action feature film in 2004.

Co-founder & producer Erik Öhrner added, “It is very inspiring and engaging to step into Håkan Bråkan’s fantastic world. There is so much heart and recognition in the stories. It is a wonderful opportunity to work with Storytel and Sören and Anders to create new stories for animation. The series have a lot of warmth and excitement, adventure and laughter.”,

The Nuttery is developing the brand into an animated series with  its creators, the popular children’s/YA book authors Sören Olsson and Anders Jacobsson. The show will be based on completely new material but will take inspiration from the body of work created so far around the character, focusing on Håkan Bråkan and his fantastic, exaggerated world full of adventure, and aimed at an international audience.

    Sören Olsson and Anders Jacobsson
    Sören Olsson and Anders Jacobsson

“Animation is by far the best way to further develop our character Håkan Bråkan and his imaginative world,” commented Olsson and Jacobsson. “We are convinced that Håkan Bråkan will be a perfect fit for this medium. The collaboration with Nuttery Entertainment feels very inspiring! It is fun to be part of brainstorming ideas and developing completely new stories about Håkan Bråkan — who is transformed into Super Bråkan when you least expect it!”

The animated series development is taking place alongside Storytel’s major push for the authors, with several new books from Olsson and Jacobsson in the works. As recently announced, Nordic Film will release two new live-action movies based on Håkan Bråkan, the first one releasing next year.

“It’s super exciting that Anders and Sören’s stories about Håkan-Bråkan are becoming an animated series! One of our goals is to have our fantastic content reach out to audiences in new and creative ways and Nuttery Entertainment is the perfect partner to help us do this,” said Sara Hasselström at Storytel Agency.

Nuttery Entertainment will develop and executive produce the animated series alongside Storytel, with Olsson and Jacobsson on board to help craft the creative materials. The project will be approaching co-producers early next year.

  • Andrea Love & Phoebe Wahl Craft a Wooly Wonderland for ‘Merry Christmas, Happy New Year’ MV

Andrea Love & Phoebe Wahl Craft a Wooly Wonderland for ‘Merry Christmas, Happy New Year’ MV

Cozy up to a Christmas carol treat with the warm ‘n fuzzy music video for “Merry Christmas, Happy New Year” — a brand-new track for the deluxe re-release of Ingrid Michaelson’s 2018 album Songs for the Season, recorded as a duet with her friend, actress/singer Zooey Deschanel.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I start celebrating Christmas in September and I cherish this time of the year so very much,” said Emmy-nominated singer-songwriter Michaelson.

Michaelson wanted to bring the song to life with a stop-motion video that would remind viewers of all things Christmas. Deschanel recommended the perfect artistic match in Hornet director Andrea Love, who specializes in animating with needle felted wool.

“For this video, I told Zooey I wanted an old-fashioned stop animation video like Rudolph,” Michaelson recalled. “She showed me Andrea Love’s work and I was smitten. We reached out to Andrea and she was on board instantly! It all just fell into place in such a lovely, natural way. I love all of it so much.”

Love recruited the help of her Tulip co-creator Phoebe Wahl, and they set out to create an ode to all things merry and bright: crackling fires, cozy sweaters and a charming duo of woodland creatures in search of the perfect Christmas tree. Love and Wahl came up with the concept for Bunny and Rabbit’s holiday quest, creating the character illustrations and set designs.

“My goal was to make it the cutest, coziest, warmest video ever,” said Love. “It’s supposed to be a little over the top, but almost in a ‘I can’t stop watching this and I need more’ kind of way.”

The film was completed over the course of three months in Love’s home studio. “Merry Christmas, Happy New Year” combines Love’s touchably soft wool fiber aesthetic with illustrator Wahl’s whimsical, folksy designs to create seasonal magic. Of course, there were a few tricky bits to contend with.

Creating color variations in felt snow and constructing rigid objects like trees were creative challenges for the film.

“I had never done felted-snow before. So figuring out how to make it different shades and colors rather than one blob of white, and figuring out the lighting so as not to overexpose it — that was a fun & challenging learning experience,” Love noted. The director also had to figure out how to make sturdy set pieces like furniture, ladders and clock-hands out of soft felt.

Cartoon Saloon’s ‘Silly Sundays’ Coming to Cartoonito

WarnerMedia Kids & Family has greenlit Silly Sundays from Cartoon Saloon for its new Cartoonito preschool block on HBO Max and Cartoon Network. Created by Oscar-nominated producer Nuria González Blanco (Late Afternoon), the endearing animated series follows cousins Sonia, Hugo and Mel on fun, unexpected adventures at their family get-togethers.

Silly Sundays will debut in the U.S. in 2023 before making its international debut in LatAm and EMEA.

“I would like to thank WarnerMedia Kids & Family for choosing to partner with us on Silly Sundays! We are so delighted to be reunited with their talented team again for this new show that is going to be very funny and sunny, just like it’s creator Nuria Blanco,” said Paul Young, Cartoon Saloon Co-Founder & Producer. “I’d like to send our very special thanks to Amy Friedman, Adina Pitt and Zia Bales for all their support and for being such believers in our work.”

The world of Silly Sundays brings viewers back to family days together, when school and work are out for the week and there is nothing scheduled except spending time with family and friends. A feel-good comedy series, full of heart and deeply rooted in familial themes, everything centers around Sonia, Hugo, Mel, Mom, Dad and Granny as they create unforgettable memories together during their weekend gatherings. The stories focus on their ups, their downs and mostly their fun times as they embrace every little moment together.

“Cartoon Saloon is an esteemed studio that masterfully approaches storytelling with love and humanity, and Silly Sundays is another great example of how the beloved studio perfectly captures the essence of family bonding,” added Adina Pitt, VP Partnerships, Acquisitions & Co-Productions for the Americas, WarnerMedia Kids & Family.

Nuria will direct the series alongside Fabian Erlinghäuser (Dorg Van Dango, Wolfwalkers, The Breadwinner). The show is developed and produced with assistance from Fís Éirean/Screen Ireland and Creative Europe.

Cartoon Saloon Brand Development will handle ancillary and merchandising and once again Cartoon Saloon will partner with Superights (Puffin Rock) for sales outside the WarnerMedia regions.

The series is currently in production at Cartoon Saloon’s studio in Kilkenny, Ireland. In addition to airing on Cartoonito across U.S., LatAm and EMEA, RTE will also broadcast Silly Sundays in Ireland.

Cartoonito is the recently launched WarnerMedia Kids & Family preschool programming block on HBO Max and Cartoon Network.  Inspired by Positive Psychology and 21 st  Century Learning, Cartoonito is based on the proprietary preschool educational framework of Humancentric Learning, which aims to support every child’s humanness by celebrating their unique selves.

Cartoon Saloon is a five-time Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Emmy-nominated animation studio founded by Paul Young, Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey. Based in Kilkenny, Ireland the studio has a crew of over 200 artists and technicians in production and project development. Cartoon Saloons acclaimed projects include the Oscar-nominated features The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner and Wolfwalkers; the Oscar-nominated short Late Afternoon; and series Puffin Rock, Skunk Fu and Dorg Van Dango. The studio is currently at work on a new series, Viking School, and Netflix Original animated movie My Father’s Dragon (2022).
