HP Evolves Z Workstations for VR, Machine Learning, Design Needs

HP is unleashing the next evolution of the world’s most powerful, secure and manageable workstation with the Z8 G4. This reinvention of the desktop PCs aims to meet the needs of product designers, architects, digital creators, scientists, educators, healthcare workers and others at the cutting-edge, as well as being future-proofed to support the fast-growing fields of virtual reality, machine learning and advanced design — along with the Z6 and Z4 Desktop Workstations.

The company’s portfolio notable includes the industry’s most comprehensive set of security features, including HP SureStart (a first in self-healing BIOS with intrusion detection), HP Client Security Suite and more to keep intellectual assets safe.

“The stakes for world-class security have never been higher or more important for workstations,” said Xavier Garcia, VP and general manager, HP Z Workstations, HP Inc. “Workstation users create the most valuable IP for a company and HP is meeting the security needs with the world’s most secure and manageable desktop and mobile workstations. As the most powerful desktop workstation in the world, the HP Z8 Workstation can deliver the extreme power and the security demanded by our customers.”

The new Z workstation towers have been redesigned, and now incorporate Thunderbolt 3 (optional) and Dual 1GbE Ports (standard) to support high bandwidth data transfer, as well as Microsoft Windows 7 support for legacy workflows. Each Z model offers modular front IO with USB 3.1 G2 Type C ports. The Z8 and Z6 support up to dual CPUs, and an optional dual 10 GbE network module for high speed networking at half the cost of current HP Workstations, and without consuming a precious PCIe expansion slot

The HP Z8 G4 Workstation has the capability to run the most complex simulations and process massive amounts of data. Users can run 3D simulations and edit 8K video in real time with up to 56 processing cores and up to 3TB of main memory, three times the capacity of its predecessor. Certified for serious software, such as ANSYS or After Effects. The all new ID has inventive ducting that routes fresh air to the second CPU, rather than recycling warm air expelled from the ducting on the first CPU, and state-of-the-art design from world-class computer architecture experts. A split chassis architecture enables rear access to the hefty 1700 W power supply with a locking mechanism, 24 DIMMs, and a total of 9 PCIe slots (7 full length, full height PCIe slots and two internal PCIe “personality” slots) for specialized workflows. The Z8 Tower has 67% more memory bandwidth, 27% greater processor core count capacity, 40% greater PCIe I/O bandwidth and 29% greater power supply capability, as compared to the Z840.

The HP Z6 G4 Workstation is designed with the ever-changing needs of VFX artists in mind. Supporting the latest professional graphics, 384 GB of system memory, and dual M.2 slots for HP Z Turbo Drive PCIe SSDs for seamless performance in visual effects and design visualization workloads. The future-proof powerhouse also delivers a highly-modular design experience with options like a second processor and memory riser solution so users can quickly and simply double their compute capabilities. The Z6 has up to 1.5x the amount of total system memory, 67% more memory bandwidth, 27% greater processor core count capacity and 22% greater PCIe I/O bandwidth for customers refreshing from the Z640.

The HP Z4 G4 Workstation is ahead of its time with more standard features, and offering performance upgrade options never before available in an HP single-processor workstation. Users across a broad range of markets can choose the ideal configuration to meet performance requirements. With the new Intel Xeon processor W family, users from CAD to simulation will see extraordinary application performance scaling, giving them the ability to visualize ideas anytime during the design process. The HP Z4 also features a new sleek and modern industrial design, with ergonomic front and rear handles, a dramatically smaller chassis and a new dust filter option. The Z4 unleashes new levels of IO bandwidth with dual 1GbE networking and dual M.2 slots for HP Z Turbo DrivePCIe SSDs standard, and the ability to easily upgrade the front USB to include two USB 3.1 G2 Type C ports. The HP Z4 Workstation has 11% more memory bandwidth, 25% greater processor core count capacity and 13% greater PCIe I/O bandwidth for customers refreshing from the Z44.

The new HP Zs include stunning new displays, designed for the most discerning customers, with out-of-the-box calibration and best-in-class reliability. Users can completely immerse themselves in the expansive elegance of the HP Z38c Curved Display, featuring a seamless workspace without the distracting center bezel of dual display setups and a large 37.5-inch diagonal curve with a 2300 mm radius and 21:9 aspect ratio. The HP Z38c has a 4K screen, 3840 x 1600 resolution display with optimized pixel density so icons and text are the ideal sizes, allowing users to spend less time panning and zooming and more time creating.

New Moomins Series Shines with Star-Studded Cast

Finnish production company Gutsy Animations has announced the first raft of voice cast members confirmed for its highly anticipated, beautifully vibrant TV series, Moominvalley, inspired by the classic Moomins world and characters created by author-illustrator Tove Jansson. Two 13 x 22 min. seasons are set to begin airing in Spring 2018.

Taron Egerton will play the lovable Moomintroll, with Rosamund Pike as the wise and caring matriarch Moominmamma, and Matt Berry as the adventurous and knowledgeable Moominpappa. Akiya Henry will voice style-conscious, sometimes flirtatious Snorkmaiden.

Other Moominvalley residents will be Kate Winslet as spick-and-span Mrs. Fillyjonk; author Will Self as philosopher The Muskrat; Warwick Davis as Moomintroll’s adopted younger brother, the slightly cowardly Sniff; and Richard Ayoade will get in touch with his spectral side to play The Ghost.

“We are thrilled with this stellar cast who have been carefully chosen to inhabit Tove Jansson’s much-loved characters,” said Gutsy’s Creative Director and Executive Producer, Marika Makaroff. “They will speak to audiences young and old and for the family drama that we are creating, which doesn’t shy away from the depth and complexities of Jansson’s original work, they couldn’t be a more talented or suitable line up.”

Moominvalley is a hybrid animation series combining 3D rendered characters in a painterly environment featuring 2D elements. In addition to the star-studded voice cast, the creative team shines with Oscar-winning director Steve Box (Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit), BAFTA-winning producer John Woolley (Shaun the Sheep) and Emmy-winning writing duo Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler (Peter Rabbit). Original music will be created by Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto (whose father composed with Tove Jansson and wrote the Moomin Opera in 1974) and percussionist Samuli Kosminen.

The series is being developed in association with YLE Drama and with the full support of brand manager Moomin Characters, set up by Tove Jansson and her brother Lars, and currently run by niece Sophia Jansson as Chairman of the Board and Creative Director. She says:

“Tove gave the inhabitants of Moominvalley the values of tolerance, love, respect, friendship and bravery – which are needed in today’s world more than ever. We’re very excited to have a wonderful cast and team who share these values bringing Moomin to life in a new way for fans young and old.”

Trailer: Jaden Smith Stars in Netflix Ode to Anime ‘Neo Yokio’

Netflix has dropped the trailer for its East-meets-West original animated series Neo Yokio — launching exclusively on the streaming platform on September 22. The project from creator, writer and exec producer Ezra Koenig (lead vocalist/guitarist of Vampire Weekend), writer/EP Nick Weidenfeld and his Friends Night banner, the show is an adult-targeted, postmodern mash-up of anime tropes, Western couture culture and English literature, starring Jaden Smith.

As the promo reveals, the series is set in a glittering modern metropolis which manages to attract the envy of the known world — and parts of the unknown world. Smith voices Kaz, a fashionably disaffected, philosophical young hero tasked with defending Neo Yokio, while putting up with snobbish peers, family pressure and a recent heartbreak.

Neo Yokio also stars Susan Sarandon, Jude Law, Tavi Gevinson, Jason Schwartzman, and Desus & Mero, with Richard Ayoade, Ike Barinholtz, Steve Buscemi, Alexa Chung, Stephen Fry, Katy Mixon, Annet Mahendru, Kiernan Shipka, Willow Smith and Amanda Stenberg.

The series is produced collaboratively by Japan’s Production I.G and Studio Deen, with Seoul-based MOI. Storyboard artists for the series include Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, Hunter x Hunter, Rurouni Kenshin) and Junji Nishimura (Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, Pro Golfer Saru).

  • Disney Legend X Atencio, Animator & Imagineer, Dies at 98

Disney Legend X Atencio, Animator & Imagineer, Dies at 98

Official Disney fan club D23 has announced that former Imagineer, animator and Disney Legend Xavier Atencio died September 10 at the age of 98. “X”, as he was known to friends, began his impressive career right out the gate with Pinocchio, and later was key to the creation of some of Disney Parks’ most iconic attractions — including Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion.

Atencio was born Sept. 4, 1919 in the western settler town of Walsenburg, CO, and moved to Los Angeles in 1937 to hone his talents at the Chouinard Art Institute — which would later become CalArts. Pushed by instructors to submit his portfolio for his dream job, Atencio was hired by Disney the next year, running all the way from Hyperion Ave. to his aunt’s house shouting the good news. He first got to see his work on the big screen at the premiere of Pinocchio in 1940, and was deeply moved by the audience’s reaction. That year, Atencio was promoted to assistant animator for the production of Fantasia.

Atencio’s animation career was interrupted by the war. He left the studio to sign up with the US Army Air Forces. Here he turned his studied artistic eye to the task of interpreting photos taken by aerial surveillance for intelligence-gathering efforts. Based in England, Atencio served from 1941 to the war’s end in 1945, attaining the rank of captain.

The artist quickly got back in the swing of things back home, returning to Disney to begin the next phase of his career animating on short films. Artencio’s first on-screen credit was for the Oscar-winning musical history Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom (1953), later working on Academy Award nominees Noah’s Ark (1959) and A Symposium on Popular Songs (1962), and Jack and Old Mac (1956). He also contributed to the Jiminy Cricket “I’m No Fool” educational shorts for The Mickey Mouse Club, and provided stop-motion sequences for Disney’s live-action features The Parent Trap (1961), Babes in Toyland (1961) and Mary Poppins (1964).

At Walt Disney’s personal request, Atencio moved over to WED Enterprises (later Walt Disney Imagineering) in 1965 to help bring the Disneyland Railroad’s “Primeval World” diorama to life. According to D23, he later recalled: “I went over there reluctantly because I didn’t know what I was getting into, and nobody there knew what I was supposed to do either.” As a Parks pioneer, Atencio went on to script Pirates of the Caribbean — and co-write its iconic song, “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)”. He also wrote the dialogue and co-wrote the song “Grim Grinning Ghosts” for The Haunted Mansion, and recorded a brief voice-over for one of the coffins.

At Walt Disney World, Atencio contributed to If You Had Wings and Space Mountain, Spaceship Earth, World of Motion and the Mexico pavilion at Epcot. Atencio retired in 1984, but continued as a consultant to the Imagineering division for many years. He was inducted as a Disney Legend in 1996.

“X was an enormous talent who helped define so many of our best experiences around the world,” Walt Disney Imagineering President Bob Weis stated. “Some may not know that when he wrote the lyrics for ‘Yo Ho’ he had never actually written a song before. He simply proposed the idea of a tune for Pirates of the Caribbean, and Walt told him to go and do it. That was how X worked—with an enthusiastic, collaborative attitude, along with a great sense of humor. His brilliant work continues to inspire Imagineers and bring joy to millions of guests every year.”

X Atencio is survived by his wife, Maureen; his children Tori McCullough, Judianne, and Joe; his stepchildren Brian Sheedy, Kevin Sheedy, and Eileen Haubeil; sons-in-law Mike McCullough and Chris Haubeil; daughters-in-law Kathy Atencio, Trish Sheedy, and Beth Sheedy; and nine grandchildren.

‘Bob’s Burgers,’ ‘Adventure Time’ Score at Creative Arts Emmys

The 69th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards were celebrated Saturday and Sunday night in Los Angeles, honoring achievements in a variety of genres and disciplines — including animation! Overall, the first night was a triumph for Ava DuVernay’s 13th, which snagged statuettes for motion design, writing, music & lyrics, and Outstanding Documentary. In the second night, VFX showpieces HBO’s Westworld (which won for Special Visual Effects) and Netflix’s Stranger Things were among the multi-award winners.

In the toon contests, FOX’s Bob’s Burgers took the Outstanding Animated Program prize for the second time (the last win was in 2014, with four additional nominations in the category), while Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time was once again named the Short Form Animated standout, having received the honor in 2015 (plus 6 previous nominations). Bob’s Burgers was also nominated in the Character Voice-Over race — Kevin Kline for “Mr. Fischoeder” — but the win went to Seth MacFarlane for his many roles in Family Guy for the second year in a row. MacFarlane and Family Guy also won the category in 2000, with 4 additional nominations.

In the Children’s Program category, which only had one animated contender this year (Disney XD’s Star Wars Rebels), the award went to HBO’s Once Upon a Sesame Street Christmas.

The individual achievement awards were also presented Saturday, having been announced the preceding Thursday.

The Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies will be aired on FXX as a combined show on Saturday, Sept. 16. The Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live the following day on CBS, hosted by Stephen Colbert.

  • Jam City Delivers ‘Futurama’ Podcast Extension on Nerdist

Jam City Delivers ‘Futurama’ Podcast Extension on Nerdist

Jam City (via its game studio TinyCo), FoxNext Games and Matt Groening are expanding the Futurama universe with a double-length podcast episode, arriving on Nerdist, SoundCloud and Spotify on September 14.

Created by Groening, David X. Cohen and the animated series’ writers, the 42-minute audio adventure feature the original cast and is tied into the mobile game Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, which has already been treating players to original content  from the podcast and in-game exclusives, like a mission to “Junkleon 7,” the deleted file planet.

Futurama has set off a strangely sci-fi- ish paradox where the episodes inspired the Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow game, and now the game is inspiring new episodes,” said Cohen. “Hooray for infinite loops!”

The podcast is a stellar reunion of the Planet Express crew, including Fry, Bender, Leela, Professor Farnsworth, Zoidberg, Amy, and Hermes—plus Borax Kid, Calculon, and the return of the popular robot soap opera, “All My Circuits”. While on a routine mission to Junkleon 7, the crew encounters Klaxxon, a nefarious life form composed entirely of soundwaves from 21st-century podcasts. Can the crew save Earth from Klaxxon’s harmful soundwaves? To find out more, download the podcast and discover for yourself!

“Last year I cornered two fine gentlemen — Matt Groening and David X. Cohen — and pitched the idea of doing a new Futurama episode as a podcast/radio play because it’s one of my favorite things AND I NEED MORE OF IT,” said Nerdist CEO Chris Hardwick. “Today I am drooling with unfiltered joy to say that a) it’s actually happening, b) I got to voice the villain (Klaxxon), and c) I’m a freaking head in a jar in Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, a game I’ve been feverishly playing since it came out. Galaxies of thanks to Matt, David and TinyCo for acquiescing to the maniacal ravings of a well-meaning fanboy.”

  • Nancy Cartwright Goes ‘In Search of Fellini’

Nancy Cartwright Goes ‘In Search of Fellini’

Next week, movie lovers on both coasts will have a chance to get to know animation icon Nancy Cartwright — the voice of Bart on The Simpsons — in a whole new light as her film In Search of Fellini, based on her own real-life adventure in Italy, gets a limited theatrical release. The flick will open Sept. 15-17 at the Laemmle NoHo in Los Angeles, and at the Village East cinema in New York City, with cast and crew Q&As following screenings.

Inspired by Cartwright’s experience travelling to Italy in 1985 to seek out the legendary director Federico Fellini, In Search of Fellini is directed by Taron Lexton and stars Ksenia Solo, Maria Bello and Mary Lynn Rajskub. Cartwright, who originally developed the story as a one-woman performance, wrote the script with Peter Kjenaas and served as executive producer with Kevin Burke, Monika Bacardi and Andrea Iervolino.

Synopsis: A sheltered, small-town Ohio girl is suddenly faced by harsh reality. Desperate for answers, she discovers hope in the delightfully bizarre films of Federico Fellini, and sets off on a strange, beautiful journey across Italy to find him. Along the way she discovers far more than she ever expected.

  • Musician Toya Delazy Voicing New Powerpuff Girl

Musician Toya Delazy Voicing New Powerpuff Girl

Fans have been buzzing online with the news, revealed with a teaser image on EW and further stirred with a rumored reveal pic making the rounds, that a new hero will be making Cartoon Network’s iconic girl-power trio a quartet in the new season of The Powerpuff Girls. What’s more, South African singer, songwriter, musician and all-around powerhouse performer Toya Delazy will be voicing the character.

Delazy previously collaborated with Turner to produce and sing a localized version of the PPG theme song for the African market (Northwest indie rockers Tacocat performed the US version). Now, she will lend her voice to five special episodes in which the four superheroic tots work together to save Townsville from the biggest and baddest evil threat yet. The Powerpuff Girls “Power of Four” will officially reveal the fourth PPG (no offense, Bunny) when it premieres Sunday, September 17 at 5:30 p.m.

“I have always dreamed of being the voice of a cartoon character. Never did I think I would be recording a voice-over as the new Powerpuff Girl for Cartoon Network, though!” commented Delazy. “In a nutshell, Cartoon Network was my childhood. The shows were always quirky, expressive, creative and cool! I have always appreciated how creative the channel is, even to this day. Watching Cartoon Network really opened my mind as a child, and for me the channel still represents creativity in all aspects of the word. The shows are bold, unexpected, energetic and exciting—definitely a brand that I can identify with and relate to.”
