PJ Masks airs on Disney Junior and Tiny Pop in the UK, consistently rating in the top 3 shows on the latter channel.

And in Australia, where the toy line debuted in April, an array of new products will hit retail in July from Parragon (publishing), Hunter Products (CrazArt range and wheeled toys), MJM (games, puzzles and stationery), The Entertainment Store (character appearances), Zak Australia (tableware), Caprice (apparel) and Amscan (partyware).

  • Viacom Quarterly Call Confirms ‘SpongeBob 3,’ ‘Loud House’ Movie

Viacom Quarterly Call Confirms ‘SpongeBob 3,’ ‘Loud House’ Movie

On Thursday, Viacom held its quarterly earnings call, putting a strong emphasis on the success of Nickelodeon animation brands and highlighting plans for feature film and merch expansions for their most popular toons. Viacom CEO Bob Bakish and Nickelodeon Group President Cyma Zarghami discussed these strategies during the call.

Zarghami notably confirmed that a third SpongeBob SquarePants movie is going ahead. Initially announced in 2015, in August of that year showrunner Vincent Waller confirmed the project was in pre-production, with Paul Tibbitt set to return to the director’s chair. The sequel experienced a small bump with the announcement at CinemaCon in late March that it was being pushed from a spring release to a new tentative date of August 2, 2019.

The uproarious underwater cartoon created by Stephen Hillenburg launched in 1999, and proved an immediate success. The TV series is Nick’s highest-rating of all time, and also its most widely distributed. The first theatrical feature, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, arrived in 2004 and totted up $140 million at the global box office. A standalone sequel, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, was released in 2015 and also proved a major success for Paramount, with a worldwide take of $325 million.

The CinemaCon ’17 announcement of a movie for Chris Savino’s top-performing comedy The Loud House was also iterated. No details have been revealed, but the feature treatment is set to be released by Paramount on February 7, 2020.

The execs also vaunted successful TV toon brands such as No. 1 preschool show PAW Patrol and evergreen action-comedy Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which will get a new 2D-animated series titled Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Fall 2018. This latest reboot of the popular characters will have “more humor, a younger and lighter feel and all-new dimensions to explore,” per Zarghami’s statement at the network’s upfronts in early March.

The recent launch of the new Entertainment Lab in Burbank was another important talking point for Nick’s impact on the larger conglomerate. Headed by SVP Chris Young, the R&D facility will focus on developing new creative capabilities such as real-time rendering for the studio, and bringing the network’s brands into emerging media spaces including VR/AR.

French-Indian Co-Pro ‘Hoodoo’ Gets in Tune

France’s Mozaic Productions, together with Bioscopewala Pictures and Suresh Eriyat’s Studio Eeksaurus — both based in Mumbai, India — announce a co-production endeavor to produce Hoodoo, a music-themed 2D family feature. The film is due for release in late 2019.

Fabrice Ziolkowski, who wrote the screenplay for Oscar-nominated feature The Secret of Kells, has been developing Hoodoo for the last six years. The original concept is anchored by the emotional and magical powers of music, especially the blues traditions born out of African American culture.

“The blues is a crown jewel of American culture and it has conquered the world, rock ’n’ roll, R&B, soul music and rap all find their roots in the blues,” noted Ziolkowski.

The screenwriter first discussed the project with Bioscopewala’s President, Nishith Takia, when they met at Annecy last year.

“I love the blues. When I heard the story of Hoodoo from Fabrice, I immediately knew that I wanted to produce this film,” said Takia. “So, I collaborated with Suresh — a Cristal award-winning director — and his creative team from India, together with my strong production team, to produce this truly international film.”

Hoodoo centers on a 10-year-old girl named Luanne Carver, who sets out to uncover the true story of her bluesman grandfather’s life in Depression-era Mississippi. The mystery she seeks to resolve: Did he really sell his soul to become a great musician? While the movie is designed for families, the filmmakers also hope to attract adult audiences by tapping the rich heritage of the blues.

The film will be co-directed by Ziolkowski, Eric Berthier and Suresh Eriyat.

“I found the idea of collaborating with Fabrice and with Nishith on an international animation feature film absolutely exciting and challenge,” commented Eriyat. “This will be the first time talent from India will be on the forefront of the creative process, and not just at the back end of a supply chain.”

“Furthermore, Fabrice’s moving script about the struggle, joy, suffering and mythologies of the people of the blues really makes an emotional connection with me. A world alien and mysterious to me, but one I look forward to discovering during the development process.”

Facebook’s Oculus Story Studio Logs Off

Facebook has announced that it will be shutting down the two-year-old Oculus Story Studio, which produced the Emmy Award-winning animated VR short Henry and more recently, the vibrant exploration of Quill technology Dear Angelica. The award-winning studio was launched to create in-house content for headsets from Oculus VR (a division of Facebook).

In a blog post on Thursday, Oculus Vice President of Content Jason Rubin explained that while the plug is being pulled on the Story Studio, the company will continue to support VR films and content from third-party creators. He noted that Oculus invested an additional $250 million in outside developers last year.

“We’ve been looking at the best way to allocate our resources to create an impact on the ecosystem. After careful consideration, we’ve decided to shift our focus away from internal content creation to support more external production,” Rubin explained. “… We’re going to carve out $50 [million] from that financial commitment to exclusively fund non-gaming, experiential VR content. This money will go directly to artists to help jumpstart the most innovative and groundbreaking VR ideas.”

Oculus will also continue to support up-and-coming VR creators with resources and programs in the vein of its Oculus Launch Pad and VR for Good initiatives.

  • Jon Cowley to Lead FuseFX Vancouver Production Team

FuseFX has hired on 18-year visual effects industry veteran Jon Cowley as Head of Production and Senior VFX Supervisor for its Vancouver facility, where he will oversee production activity and lead the VFX supervisors on projects such as TV series Zoo and Mist. Cowley will be working closely with Executive Producer Wendy Lanning, according to FuseFX President David Altenau.

Cowley brings plenty of experience as a manager ,VFX supervisor and artist to the new post, with credits including blockbuster features Furious 7, TRON: Legacy, The Great Gatsby and District 9. He most recently served as client-side VFX supervisor on Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix).

With a background in industrial engineering, fine arts, design and animation, Cowley kicked off his computer graphics career in his hometown of Toronto, working on films like Panic Room and Jason X. His first VFX Supervisor credit came with Disney’s TV movie A Wrinkle in Time. Since then, he has held supervisory roles on more than 30 feature film and TV projects, with further highlights including Smallville, Total Recall and Men in Black 3.

“Successful supervision is a blend of decisive leadership and an eye for the bigger picture. We make sequences, not shots. We create pictures, but we also tell stories. For artists to thrive and deadlines to be met, VFX has to constantly rebalance, re-evaluate and innovate. It’s my goal to bring that mindset to every project,” said Cowley.

“It’s an opportunity to put my 18-years of knowledge and experience to work in a dynamic production environment. We’ve got a tight-knit group of professionals with a wealth of experience and I look forward to working with them in building the FuseFX brand.”

These development are an early success for recently launched Fun Union, a Hong Kong-based joint venture of Riki and Asian investors created to bring the company’s brands (Kikoriki, BabyRiki, PinCode) to new markets.

Aimed at primary school students, PinCode follows the adventures of Captain Pin the Penguin and his crew as they explore an important scientific lesson in each episode. Each character is imbued with a unique personality, but together the funny friends dive into teh principles of physics, chemistry and biology while traveling the world in their incredible shapechanging vehicle, the Umflier.

Season two of PinCode is currently in production and due in December.

Morph Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Emoji Set

Bristol-based studio Aardman is offering fans of classic stop-motion a thoroughly modern way to celebrate with a newly released iMessage sticker pack featuring 16 Morph emojis, just in time for the character’s 40th anniversary. The pack is available now for free from the App Store.

In the perfect blending of old school craft and digital savvy, the emojis were hand sculpted by Peter Lord, Aardman co-founder and co-creator of Morph. The sculptures were then spiffied up with graphics and animation to bring them to life. The emoji set covers a variety of emotions, including angry, embarrasses, “thumbs-up,” “in love” and even a Morph version of the poop emoji. The collection also include messaging stickers to jazz up texts and social media posts.

“When someone said to me, ‘We could do Morph emojis,’ it was like this huge lightbulb going on. Of course. That’s just perfect! Morph has a lovely round face and he does great expressions; he really is like a living emoji,” said Lord. “Who wouldn’t want Morph’s happy (and sometimes grumpy) face all over their messages? Bless him. So I jumped on the idea, and I’m so happy with the way they’ve worked out, they’re really funny and charming.”
