One Animation Staffs Up for Global L&M Roll Out

One Animation, the Singapore-based CG animation studio behind award-winning TV series Oddbods and Insectibles, has made two key hires to its international licensing and merchandising team: Anabel Higgin, Marketing Director; and Pauline Hiu, VP Consumer Products, Asia. Both are experienced industry pros who will be important players in the studio’s growing brand development team as it enters the global roll-out phase of its successful licensing program and seeks further opportunities for its properties across diverse platforms.

Oddbods is arguably our best known show and a global ratings success, but we’re also working on new material and formats for other existing shows like Insectibles, as well as new concepts,” said Sashim Parmanand, CEO of One Animation. “All this is happening whilst we continue with the successful launch of our Oddbods toy range across Europe, alongside a broader range of consumer products – such as books and apparel – which will follow in the coming months. We anticipate launching similar ranges in other regions around the world in the next 6 to 9 months, so you could say we are exceptionally busy at the moment!”

Pauline Hiu is a licensing and brand professional with 20 years of experience in character and entertainment as well as lifestyle, fashion, sport and corporate brand licensing. She was formerly VP of Global Brands Group (part of the Li & Fung Group), and prior to this was Licensing Director at FCI — Disney’s exclusive licensing partner in Southeast Asia, where Hiu was responsible for developing its consumer products business.

“My focus at One Animation will be to build and expand on licensing, retail, promotional and corporate partnerships,” said Hiu.
“We’re looking to capitalize on the tremendous growth potential of our brand portfolio, expand into new platforms and build strategic partnerships.” Anabel Higgin was previously regional senior licensing manager in Southeast Asia for Hasbro, where her remit was to expand FMCG and fashion consumer products categories across the region. Higgin has also served as GM of brand marketing for Global Brands Group, managing the fashion portfolio’s brands in Southeast Asia.

“One Animation’s properties have enormous potential because of the loyalty and breadth of the fanbase,” said Higgin. “We’re committed to fulfilling this potential and bringing these fans greater depth of content, expanding the number of consumer touch-points and broadening the range of consumer products.”

  • Cartoon Movie Wraps a Successful Bordeaux Debut

Cartoon Movie Wraps a Successful Bordeaux Debut

Premiere European pitching event for animated features Cartoon Movie took place last week in its new host burg of Bordeaux, France, welcoming 850 participants (up 14% from last year) from 41 different countries for its 19th edition. This year, 43 game companies were represented, as well as 221 buyers — including 125 distributors and sales agents.

The 55 pitch projects selected for the 2017 forum represented a diverse range of genres, production techniques and budgets (from 3 to 13 million euro). There were 17 projects in concept, 26 in development, 9 in production and 3 sneak previews. For the first time, projects from Georgia, Ukraine and Israel were in the mix. And the local region had a strong showing with 7 projects developed in Bordeaux and Angoulême under the aegis of the Pôle Image Magelis. Family comedies and kids’ adventure films remained the largest contingent, with 35 projects.

In-Concept projects generating a lot of enthusiasm this year included: Remy Shaepman’s The Nazis, My Father and Me (Folivari, produced by Didier Brunner); an adaptation of Marina Lewycka’s novel Two Caravans (Blue Zoo Animation); Unicorn Wars (Schmuby Prod.), Single Mom in Korea (Marmitafilms) by Jung Henin (Approved for Adoption); and Princess Dragon (Ankama Animations) by the Dofus duo Anthony Roux & Jean-Jacques Denis.

Animation for adults (*) made up 33% of the 10 best-attended pitches, which were: Zombillenium by Arthur de Pins (Maybe Movies); The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales based on Benjamin Renner’s books (Folivari); *Miss Saturne by Jérôme Combe & Barbara Israël (Prima Linea); Wolfwalkers by Tomm Moore (Cartoon Saloon); Calamity, A Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary by Rémi Chayé (Maybe Movies); Kensuke’s Kingdom by Neil Boyle & Kirk Hendry (Lupus Films); The Prince’s Journey by Jean-François Laguionie (Blue Spirit Prod.); Charlotte by Bibo Bergeron (co-prod. Les Films du Poisson Rouge); *The Siren by Sepideh Farsi (Les films d’ici); and *Super Vinamotor by Stéphanie Lansaque & François Leroy (Je suis bien content).

In collaboration with Bordeaux Games, Pôle Image Magelis and CATS (Cluster Aquitain du Transmedia Storytelling), Cartoon organized Cartoon Games & Apps matchmaking sessions, 20 minute meetings between animation producers, transmedia & gaming professionals. 43 video game representatives (including Ubisoft, Shinypix, FrameOver, Remote Control Prod., Waveor and Solidanim) from Germany, Belgium, Spain and France mingled with 61 European animation producers in over 300 sessions.

The 2017 Cartoon Tributes honors were swept by My Life as a Zucchini (Ma Vie de Courgette). Director of the Year went to Claude Barras; Distributor of the Year to Angel Films (Denmark); and Rida Prod. (Switzerland), Blue Spirit Prod. and Gebeka Films (France) were named Producers of the Year.

Cartoon Movie also followed the lead of its sister event, Cartoon Forum, by spotlighting a specific region, selecting Flanders this year. The Flandriens of Animation showcase included 8 selected projects (5 in co-production), presentations of Flemish studios during Croissant Shows, and a Farewell Cocktail featuring famous Flemish chocolates, beers, and Belgian frites. Six particularly successful Flemish pitches were: Charlotte (Les Productions Balthazar/Walking The Dog), The Siren (Les films d’ici/Lunanime), Crazy Island (Grid Animation), Fox and Hare Save the Forest (Submarine/Walking The Dog), HUMP (MovieBrats Pictures/Walking The Dog) and Canaan (Tondo/Tarantula/Superprod) directed by Jan Bultheel (Cafard).

  • Gaumont Options ‘Star Shards Chronicles’ for Animated Series

Gaumont Options ‘Star Shards Chronicles’ for Animated Series

Nicolas Atlan, President of Animation for Gaumont, announced that the Paris- and LA-based company has optioned global rights to the epic trilogy The Star Shards Chronicles, from New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Neal Shusterman. An ambitious new animated series will be developed based on the books by the popular writer, who has penned more than 30 award-winning titles and has had his novels translated into over 20 languages.

The Star Shards Chronicles is an epic story about six ordinary kids facing extraordinary obstacles, learning to overcome them at great sacrifice to save the world,” said Atlan. “Neal’s characters have feelings and experiences that all kids can understand and this is what draws them to his books. We are honored that he has entrusted Gaumont with this project. He is not only the writer of these amazing stories but will be a part of the team as we work together to bring this empowering trilogy to life. Gaumont has always pushed the boundaries of creativity in storytelling, and we will do so once again as we work closely with Neal throughout this adventure.”

Shusterman’s long-time collaborator, Julian Stone, will serve as an executive producer on the series.

The trilogy focuses on six ordinary children conceived at the instant that a star exploded light-years away, transforming their souls into living star fragments and bestowing on them extraordinary powers. As they struggle to understand the source of their supernatural qualities, they learn that only by finding one another and banding together will they be strong enough to defeat the mysterious forces attacking them.

“I’ve always felt this series would shine in animation,” said Shusterman. “Gaumont’s passion for the project, as well as their reputation for innovative and powerful storytelling make them the perfect fit for The Star Shards Chronicles. I’m thrilled to be working with them!”

Two of Shusterman’s other hit stories are currently being developed as films: Constantin Film will produce The Unwind Dystology, while Bluegrass Films (a Universal Studios entity) is adapting his newest book Scythe (Nov. 2016), which spent 15 weeks on the NYT bestseller list for YA hardcovers and won the Michael L. Printz Honor Award. Shusterman is also the author of The Skinjacker Trilogy, Downsiders and 2015 National Book Award winner Challenger Deep.

Adult Swim’s dedicated weekend block “Toonami” is celebrating 20 years with an exciting lineup of live streams, never-before-seen animation, and giveaways kicking off Friday, March 17. First launched as an afternoon block on March 17, 1997, Toonami returned as a Saturday-night affair on Adult Swim in 2012. The distinct block helped indoctrinate a generation of anime fans in the late ‘90s, and more recently welcomed back Genndy Tartakovsky’s Samurai Jack to the air and moved its start time up to 11 p.m.

“It’s hard to believe Toonami is celebrating its 20 year anniversary. Much has changed since Toonami’s premiere in 1997, but our strategy remains the same: to air the best anime and action cartoons, packaged and presented in a way that respects and welcomes fans” says Jason DeMarco, SVP and creative director, on-air for Adult Swim. “Those fans are the reason Toonami still exists in 2017, and we couldn’t be more thankful for their years of support. Here’s hoping we’re still around for another 20 years.”

The festivities will open with a Toonami Pre-Flight live stream at 8 p.m., featuring Adult Swim’s Jason DeMarco, and Creative Director of Sponsor Promotions Gill Austin — both of whom were onboard the block from the beginning — as well as the voices of T.O.M. and SARA, Steve Blum and Dana Swanson, reminiscing over classic footage and an interview with co-creator Sean Akins.

On March 18’s Toonami broadcast, supported by Arby’s, will have the results of the fan votes for favorite graphic looks through the years, plus the premiere of legendary Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii’s new five-episode micro-series, Sand Whale and Me at midnight. Episodes will premiere over five consecutive weeks on the block. And, TV viewers will have a chance at an anniversary-themed giveaway with tees, T.O.M. action figures, a limited run printed comic from Intruder 3, and more. (Details to be revealed on-air.)

    Toonami airs Saturday nights at 11 p.m. ET/PT; Toonami Pre-Flight launches episodes Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on adultswim.com.

Blue Spirit Increases 2017 Project Slate, Racks Up ‘Courgette’ Honors

With the success of Claude Barras’ acclaimed stop-motion feature My Life as a Zucchini (Ma Vie de Courgette) — which has won 20 awards to-date, including two Césars and the Cartoon Movie Tribute for Producers of the Year (Blue Spirit, Rita Prod. and Gebeka Films) — Blue Spirit Productions has added to its upcoming slate of animated series and feature projects.

In total, studio heads Eric Jacquot and Armelle Glorennac have invested in four new series projects as well as two feature animations: Le Tableau helmer Jean-François Laguionie’s latest film, The Prince’s Journey (Le Voyage du Prince); and children’s comic-book adaptation Yaya — based on The Ballad of Yaya published by Fei.

New on the Blue Spirit slate are:

Arthur and the Kids of the Round Table (Arthur et les enfants de la table ronde)
    Kids 6-8 | 52 x 11 min. In production
Cofinanced by Canal+ for Teletoon+ and Canal+ Family (France), SWR and Telepool (Germany).
Developed by Isabelle Huchet-Castel as lead writer and Fernando Lira on the graphic bible, this comedy by Jean-Luc François is the first animated series made in UHD-HRD, and tells of the adventures of a young King Arthur and his friends as they see their chivalrous ideals confront the baseness of the time. If only their exploits were recognised by everyone, that would be the Holy Grail! One of the Top 30 most-watched programs at the last MIP Junior, Arthur et les enfants de la table ronde has pre-sold to Radio-Canada for French-speaking Canada, RTS for French- speaking Switzerland, SVT in Sweden and VRT in Belgium.

    Alice & Lewis
    Kids 5-7 | 52 x 11 min.
Presented at the last Cartoon Forum, Alice & Lewis is a CGI-animated preschool project written by Romain Gadious. The comedy series follows Alice and her rabbit, Lewis, on their adventures in Wonderland as they come up with unique ways to overcome any situation.

The Baker Street Four (Les Quatre de Baker Street)
    Kids 6-10 | 6 x 52 min.
Adapted from the 7 volume comic book co-written by Olivier Legrand and Jean-Blaise Djian, and illustrated by David Etien for Editions Glénat (250k copies sold), the mini-series is developed with Didier Brunner’s Folivari and tags along with a group of young Victorian detectives, worthy descendants of the legendary Sherlock Holmes. The Long Long Holiday writers Guillaume Mautalent and Sébastien Oursel reunite with director Paul Leluc on the project.

    The Borrowers (Les Borrowers)
    TV Series
Blue Spirit is also creating the first animated series adaptation of Mary Norton’s beloved novels, which have been successfully adapted twice for theaters (Peter Hewitt’s live-action film in 1997, and Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s animated feature for Ghibli in 2010). The series will center on 12-year-old Arrietty, who is 4 inches tall (the same height as an orange!) and lives with her tiny family of Borrowers hidden under the floorboards of the kitchen of the Atlantic Hotel. When 10-year-old Tom discovers the tiny little girl after she falls into the fish tank, he saves her. This is the beginning of a fabulous secret friendship and a series of incredible adventures for Arrietty and Tom, the discovery of a different view on everyday life.

The Prince’s Journey (Le voyage du Prince)
Feature film in development; due in 2019
In 2009, Blue Spirit made its first foray into feature production with Le Tableau (The Painting), which was released in 2011. Acclaimed director Jean- François Laguionie has chosen to work again with Armelle Glorennec’s team to work on his new feature film. Written in the form of a travel log, the film starts with the discovery of the Prince who has been shipwrecked on an unknown shore. Injured and lost, he is found by Tom and is taken in by his parents, two researchers in exile. The Prince, guided by his young friend, discovers with enthusiasm and fascination a society which nevertheless appears stiff and ossified…
The Prince’s Journey is a sort of sequel to Laguionie’s A Monkey’s Tale (1999). It will be produced in Angoulême, Montreal and Brussels, in Blue Spirit’s studios, and was presented at Cartoon Movie last week.

    Yaya
    Feature film in development
Blue Spirit’s other animated feature in development is based on the Franco-Chinese comic book La balade de Yaya (Editions Fei). The 9-volume series written by Jean-Marie Omont, Charlotte Girard and Patrick Marty with art by Zhao Golo has sold more than 200k copies in France and recently won an award in China. The story: Shanghai, 1937, and the city is invaded by the Japanese army. Yaya, a little girl from a well-off family, goes off in search of her parents, with the help of Tuduo, a young street urchin.

  • ‘Mavka’ Makes a Splash as First Ukrainian Prod at Cartoon Movie

‘Mavka’ Makes a Splash as First Ukrainian Prod at Cartoon Movie

FILM.UA Group and Animagrad producers brought some fresh spring air to Bordeaux for Cartoon Movie — Europe’s premiere animation forum — with its original feature project Mavka. The Forest Song. The presentation marked the studios’ first international outing for the film as well as Cartoon Movie’s first Ukrainian pitch.

“We are sincerely happy that Cartoon Movie Ukraine was able to show its high professional standards, no worse than those of most European counterparts. The essential thing was to present a project, which was different from many others due to its original (Ukrainian) story, huge energy of the protagonist and powerful ethnographic foundation. The project’s philosophy and mission hit home with the international audience as amongst others they raised the issues of environmental protection, spiritual living and other common human values. I am grateful to our team for productive creative work and excellent preparation for the event,” said producer Egor Olesov.

Thanks to a well-prepared presentation and a comprehensive approach to showcasing the project (including the market cover of Animation Magazine, as pictured), Mavka was a big hit at the event and drew so much interest that co-production negotiations are already underway, with a release planned for 2019.

The pitch for Mavka was prepared over a period of several months by producers Iryna Kostyuk, Anna Eliseeva and Egor Olesov, and the whole Animagrad studio team. The detailed presentation included working footage accompanied by authentic folk music from DakhaBrakha, and a range of branded goodies including notebooks, temporary tattoos (replicating Mavka’s magic markings) and a puppet of Swampy, the film’s sidekick. The presenters also seemed to step out of the movie’s world with memorable outfits created by Mavka‘s costume designer, Olga Navrotskaya.

The presenters were afterwards surrounded by interested distributors, broadcasters and potential co-production partners. Many Cartoon Movie participants tagged Mavka as the best of the year’s pitches in the event’s survey.

“We put all our hearts into this performance, just as we put it daily into each sketch of the characters and worlds, into each word of the script, into each future shot… And the audience felt it. All the energy from our ancient myths and legends, our rituals and folklore music, all the power of the feminine put into a unique and ambiguous character of Mavka (who can be tenderly loving and vulnerable as well as strong and furious defender at the same time) – all this is our code, it runs in the blood. So this touches the soul, and tears well up in your eyes – not just our eyes as creators but everyone we manage to explain it to. And our goal is to bring it out to the widest possible audience. Because Mavka is worth it,” said producer Iryna Kostyuk.

Mavka. The Forest Song (currently in development) is inspired by a play of the same name by Lesya Ukrainka, as well as by various Ukrainian legends and cultural traditions. The film’s production crew includes experts from leading ethnography institutes: the Ukrainian Studies Center at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the Ivan Honchar Museum, and the Ukrainian Fashion Museum. The experts are there to ensure the authenticity of the Ukrainian myths and legends, religious beliefs, rituals, and visual culture translated into the singular animated world of Mavka. In September 2016, Mavka won the ninth contest held by the Ukrainian State Film Agency and was awarded state financing in the amount of 30% of the film’s total budget.

Disney XD Orders 2nd ‘Big Hero 6’ Season, Unveils New Cast Video

Disney XD has placed an early order for a second season of the highly anticipated Big Hero 6 The Series ahead of its official premiere this fall. Based on Disney Animation’s Academy Award-winning feature adaptation of the Marvel comics, the Big Hero 6 show is executive produced by Emmy winners Mark McCorkle, Bob Schooley and Nick Filippi (the Kim Possible team). The announcement was made by SVP of Programming and General Manager for Disney XD, Marc Buhaj.

“Mark, Bob and Nick have delivered a dynamic adventure series that follows the Big Hero 6 superhero team, led by audience favorites Hiro and Baymax,” said Buhaj. “We are honored to have the opportunity to further expand the elaborate world and engaging characters of Big Hero 6 The Series with this early second season order.”

Produced by Disney Television Animation, the series picks up immediately after the events of the movie, and continuing the adventures of 14-year-old tech genius Hiro (voiced by Ryan Potter) and his compassionate, cutting-edge robot Baymax (Scott Adsit). Along with their friends Wasabi (Khary Payton), Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez), Go Go (Jamie Chung) and Fred (Brooks Wheelan), they form the legendary superhero team Big Hero 6 and embark on high-tech adventures as they protect their city from an array of scientifically enhanced villains … all while Hiro faces daunting academic challenges and social trials as the new prodigy at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology.

The voice cast also features Maya Rudolph as Aunt Cass, Alan Tudyk as Alistair Krei, David Shaughnessy as Heathcliff and Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee as Fred’s dad.

To accompany the announcement, Disney XD also released a fun little video in which the cast do their best to imitate and demonstrate Baymax’s iconic fist-bump, which you can check out below.

Meanwhile, an ancient evil, Brother Blood (Gregg Henry), has awakened, and familiar foe Deathstroke (the late Miguel Ferrer) is lurking in the shadows – both waiting to pounce. • Bardel Helps Rovio’s ‘Angry Birds Blues’ Take Wing

Bardel Helps Rovio’s ‘Angry Birds Blues’ Take Wing

World-leading Canadian animation company Bardel Entertainment has teamed up with Rovio Entertainment to produce its latest toon series, Angry Birds Blues (30 x 2-3 min.). The show bowed March 10 on Rovio’s ToonsTV service. Blues was initially teased during the end credits of last year’s The Angry Birds Movie, which socked away a nice nest egg of $350 million at the global box office.

“We’re excited to be entering into a new relationship with Rovio to extend the world of Angry Birds into a new TV series,” said Delna Bhesania, CEO & Co-founder of Bardel. “This is an opportunity for Bardel to offer a bigger breadth of services and push the boundaries of quality for animated TV.”

Angry Birds Blues follows the hilarious escapades of the mischievous bluebird triplets on their home of Bird Island. Bursting with energy and big plans that either wildly succeed or disastrously fail, the Blues’ antics are often complicated by a supporting cast of naive, yet adorable, hatchlings.

Rovio and Bardel began collaborating on the series during look development. One of the biggest challenges encountered at this stage was creating a cinema-quality look that matched the Angry Birds feature, on a TV schedule and budget. To surmount this hurdle, Bardel’s Studio CG Supervisor, Chris Browne, strategized with his team to develop innovative solutions that would optimize the CG workflow.

One of the tools they created was a pipeline that was able to render detailed, high-quality assets, such as dense grass in a large scaled environment. The team created a tool to build grass only in the camera view, as opposed to the entire environment. Other solutions include a 360-degree rotational lighting system to achieve the high-quality cinematic effect for of the series; and a workshare tool that enabled artists to share technical settings to eliminate repetitive tasks.

“We knew we wanted to work with Bardel because they understand the high level of quality that the Angry Birds brand demands,” said Joonas Rissanen, producer of Angry Birds Blues. “Bardel helped us get as close as possible to a feature film look within a TV series budget.”
