Entertainment One (eOne) has secured broadcast sales for its new 2D-animated comedy series Winston Steinburger and Sir Dudley Ding Dong in two key European territories. The news follows shortly after the series premiere on Teletoon in Canada, where it airs twice on weekdays and on weekend mornings. Corus is bolstering the show with bonus content on social media and a recently launched gaming app.

Season one of Winston Steinburger (52 x 11; kids 6-11) was picked up by Cartoon Network in France and pubcaster OUFtivi in Belgium. The show will launch in France in February and in Belgium in June of 2017.

Prior to the most recent deals, Winston Steinburger season one had sold to Clan TVE (Spain) and BIGGS (Portugal). Recent broadcast launches include ABC3 (Australia) and KIX (UK), where it performs at 62% above the channel average and ranks in its top 10 shows. The toon will also be heading to MBC Group’s channels across MENA in September.

Developed by eOne in collaboration with multi-award-winning animation studio Sticky Pictures, Winston Steinburger and Sir Dudley Ding Dong follows the hilarious adventures of thrill-seeking space kid, Winston Steinburger, his feline best friend, Sir Dudley, and an uptight alien, Hampton, as they explore the galaxy together in a homemade space cruiser seeking out fun adventures, facing death on a daily basis, and evading Pam the Destroyer – a tweenie bopper with a manic personality, an itchy trigger finger and a mega crush on Winston.

The series is co-produced with broadcasters Teletoon Canada and ABC3 Australia.

New homes for the action-comedy series include MediaCorp Suria Channel (Singapore). Media Prima TV9 (Malaysia) and Wuhan Kids TV (China).

The 2D animated series (52 x 11, kids 7-11) is also currently performing well on Disney Asia (SEA), Nickelodeon (India) and Disney China. • 50+ Animated and Live-Action Disney Features Set for Hulu

50+ Animated and Live-Action Disney Features Set for Hulu

Hulu struck a significant blow in the war for digital streaming dominance over the holiday break, announced a new licensing deal with Walt Disney Studios that will give the platform exclusive rights to a 50-plus-title collection of live-action and animated features. Rolling out in the coming months will be a selection of mostly family movies — as well as comedies, dramas and action flicks.

Already launched on Hulu are animated favorites Hercules, Mulan, Pocahontas, and The Nightmare Before Christmas, which will soon be joined by The Emperor’s New Groove, Lilo & Stitch, The Princess and the Frog and Tarzan. The service already offers original movies and other Disney-ABC Television Group programming, as Disney has a 30% stake in Hulu.

The new deal — which gives Hulu a significant boost in the kids’ content department — means that Disney movies are split between Hulu and Netflix, which under a prior agreement can offer Walt Disney Studios films (including Disney and Pixar animation, Marvel and Lucasfilm titles) during the same timeframe they are available on pay TV networks. First announced in 2012, the Disney-Netflix arrangement went into effect this fall.

Walt Disney Studios features accounted for the top four films at the global box office for 2016: Captain America: Civil War ($1.153 billion; Marvel), Finding Dory ($1.027 billion; Pixar), Zootopia ($1.023 billion; Disney Animation) and The Jungle Book ($966.6 million; Disney Studios).

Disney Ends 2016 with Record $3B Domestic B.O.

Walt Disney Studios went into December on the cusp of attaining a record-breaking $7 billion in international box office takings, and thanks to the strong performance of the year-end release Rogue One: A Star Wars Story it also set an industry first by passing $3 billion domestically.

From Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2016, Disney titles racked up $7.6 billion worldwide ($3.001 billion domestic) with 16 titles — with the biggest moneymakers coming from its animation studios, Marvel and Lucasfilm. 2016 is the studio’s second consecutive record year, with 2015 breaking down to $5.844B worldwide and $2.279B domestic.

Lucasfilm’s Rogue One came from the rear of the release calendar and launched straight into hyperspace, becoming the second-highest grossing movie in the US and edging past Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War with $408.08M over $408M in just a couple weeks.

Disney boasts six of the top 11 films of the year globally, including the top four (billion-dollar club members Civil War, Finding Dory, Zootopia and just-under The Jungle Book). The studio also released seven of the top 12 domestic titles, lead by Finding Dory, Rogue One and Civil War in the top three; and five of the top nine international titles, including top three Civil War, Zootopia and Jungle Book.

  • Disney Legend Tyrus Wong Dies at 106

Tyrus Wong, one of the most celebrated Chinese-American artists in US history and the driving force behind the design of Walt Disney’s Bambi (1942), died Friday, December 30 at age 106. Wong’s contributions to the animated classic were largely unrecognized until half a century after the film arrived in theaters, where critics and filmgoers were struck by its haunting, painterly visuals. Wong was inducted as a Disney Legend in 2001, and received a Historymakers Award for art from the Chinese American Museum.

Born Wong Gen Yeo on Oct. 25, 1910 in Guangdong Province, Wong was a gifted artist from a young age. When he was nine years old, Wong and his father emigrated to the US — leaving his mother and sister behind, never to see them again. Upon arriving in California, father and son were held and became separated at Angel Island due to the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882-1943). After enduring the immigration process — which often included lengthy interrogations — they lived in Sacramento before moving to Los Angeles.

Wong’s talent was evident to his teachers, who along with his father encouraged him to pursue art. He received a full-time scholarship to Otis Art Institute, working while pursuing his education. After graduating, Wong put his gifts and training to use in Hollywood, designing sets and storyboards for Warner Bros. features (including The Sands of Iwo Jima, Rebel without a Cause and The Wild Bunch) and creating inspirational concept art for Disney from the 1930s to ’60s.

Wong’s prolific artistic career also saw him designing Hallmark greeting cards and Winfield Pottery, and he was an accomplished painter, muralist, lithographer, ceramicist and kitemaker.

A retrospective of Wong’s work was the inaugural exhibition of the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles in 2003. More recently, Wong’s long career was the subject of “Water to Paper, Paint to Sky” at the Walt Disney Family Museum (with an accompanying hardcover book), which traveled to the Museum of Chinese in America in New York. Pamela Tom’s documentary about the artist, Tyrus, was released in 2015.

Wong was predeceased by his wife, Ruth. He is survived by three daughters, Kay Fong, Tai-Ling Wong and Kim Wong; and two grandchildren.

  • ‘Star Wars’ Star Carrie Fisher Dies at 60

Actor, author and screenwriter Carrie Fisher — known worldwide as the iconic Princess Leia (and now, General Organa) of Star Wars — died in Los Angeles on December 27 after being struck by a heart attack on a flight from London, where she had been on the UK leg of her book tour for The Princess Diarist.

Born Oct. 21, 1956 in Beverly Hills, Fisher was the daughter of pop singer Eddie Fisher and Singin’ in the Rain star Debbie Reynolds, who died just two days later at age 84.

Coming from Hollywood royalty, Fisher was catapulted to international movie stardom nearly overnight when George Lucas’ Star Wars debuted in 1977, introducing audiences to a new kind of princess — one who was more than capable of rescuing herself and anyone else who needed it. Fisher reprised her role as Leia in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens three decades later.

Lucasfilm confirmed that Fisher had completed filming her scenes for the upcoming Episode VIII installment of the blockbuster franchise, which will be released in December 2017.

Fisher made her first big screen appearance in Shampoo (1975), with other notable credits including The Blues Brothers (1980), When Harry Met Sally (1989), and self-satirizing cameos on TV shows like Sex and the City and The Big Bang Theory.

In addition to her on-screen work, Fisher was an insightful writer with a gift for wry, cut-to-the-quick humor. She turned her pen to the more ridiculous aspects of her sci-fi alter-ego and used it to openly discuss her life with bipolar disorder and struggles with depression and substance abuse. Prior to The Princess Diarist, she penned a semi-autobiographical novel Postcards from the Edge and Wishful Drinking, a one-woman show which she also published as a memoir.

In Wishful Drinking, her storytelling talent is on full display when she relates a very special anecdote about working with George Lucas on the first Star Wars film, related to a certain white dress.

George comes up to me the first day of filming and he takes one look at the dress and says, “You can’t wear a bra under that dress.”

So, I say, “Okay, I’ll bite. Why?”

And he says, “Because. . . there’s no underwear in space.”

The explanation for why lead Fisher to reflect on her own ideal obituary:

What happens is you go to space and you become weightless. So far so good, right? But then your body expands??? But your bra doesn’t—so you get strangled by your own bra.

Now I think that this would make for a fantastic obit—so I tell my younger friends that no matter how I go, I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra.

Fisher is survived by her brother, Todd; daughter, Billie Lourd; and half-sisters Joely and Tricia Leigh Fisher.

Thankfully, it should be worth the wait as the newest batch will have 14 episodes, compared to 10 in the previous seasons.

Fox Searchlight Puts Wes Anderson’s ‘Isle of Dogs’ on the Map

Right on the heels of the production and cast announcement issued in a video yesterday, Fox Searchlight has acquired worldwide rights to Wes Anderson’s stop-motion animated feature Isle of Dogs. The film, which follows a young boy on an epic search for his lost canine companion in Japan, is being produced by Indian Paintbrush in London and due out 2018.

Fox Searchlight previously released Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and his premiere animated outing, Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), which received Oscar nominations for Best Animated Film and Best Original Score — composed by Alexandre Desplat, who will again collaborate with the director on Isle of Dogs with fellow Andersonian alums Ian Mackinnon and Peter Saunders (puppets) and Tristan Oliver (cinematography).

The voice cast includes: F. Murray Abraham, Bob Balaban, Bryan Cranston, Jeff Goldblum, Akira Ito, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Kunichi Nomura, Edward Norton, Yoko Ono, Koyu Rankin, Liev Schreiber, Tilda Swinton, Akira Takayama and Courtney B. Vance.

“Wes Anderson is one of the most talented filmmakers of his, or any other, generation. His ability to write smart and unconventional screenplays and then translate them into unique experiences on screen makes him not only a unique voice in film, but one who can truly bridge the gap between independent films and cross-over hits,” said Nancy Utley and Steve Gilula, President of Fox Searchlight Pictures. “We are thrilled to be going on a journey into the newest world from the distinctive imagination of Wes Anderson.”

Weinstein Hops on Ballerina Animation ‘Leap!’

The Weinstein Company announced it will be releasing Leap! — a French-Canadian CG animated feature centered on a late 19th century Paris ballet school — in theaters on March 3, 2017. Under the title Ballerina, the English-language film was recently shopped at AFM, buoyed by the star power of lead voice actor Elle Fanning.

Fanning’s last voice-over gig was portraying Winnie in LAIKA’s The Boxtrolls. As a tot, she provided the English dub voice of Mei in Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro. Leap!’s headliners also include Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Maddie Ziegler of Dance Moms and pop star Carly Rae Jepsen, with Terrence Scammell and Julie Khaner.

Leap! is set in Belle Époque Paris, and follows an 11-year-old orphaned girl who arrives in the city with nothing but a driving passion to become a ballet dancer. Desperate, penniless and separated from her traveling companion — a boy from her hometown who dreams of being a famous inventor — she assumes the identity of a snobby rich girl and makes it into the famous Opera Ballet School. With the help of her friends and a mysterious caretaker, she evades the malicious whims of the school’s toughest instructor and learns that it take more than raw talent to be a ballerina.

Produced by Quad Productions, Main Journey and Caramel Film, Leap! is directed by Eric Summer and Éric Warin, from an original story by Summer & Laurent Zeitoun, with script by Carol Noble, Zeitoun & Summer. Producers are Nicolas Duval Adassovsky, Yann Zenou and Zeitoun for Quad and Main Journey, and Andre Rouleau and Valerie D’Auteuil for Caramel.
