‘Justice League Action’ Gets Four-Part Launch Dec. 16

DC’s elite super hero squad will begin an all-new series of animated adventures next month as Justice League Action premieres on Cartoon Network with a special four-part special, “Shazam Slam,” on Friday, December 16 at 6 p.m ET/PT. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the show will debut new episodes Saturday mornings on CN beginning Dec. 24.

In “Shazam Slam,” the villainous Black Adam battles Batman on the Rock of Eternity and unleashes a horde of Djinn determined to turn the Earth back to its pre-human, volcanic state. Affected by the otherworldly powers of these primordial monsters, Batman becomes possessed and is turned into a giant flying Batmonster laying waste to the Hall of Justice, with only Superman capable of taking the fight to the Dark Knight. One by one, the Justice League – with the help of Shazam (voiced by Sean Astin) and The Wizard (voiced by Carl Reiner) – must hunt down and defeat each Djinn in order to yet again save the world from destruction.

Justice League Action marks the return of fan-favorite Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series) to voicing Batman in a weekly animated TV series. The show will also deliver an all-star lineup of regular and guest cast voices, including Mark Hamill as Joker, James Woods as Lex Luthor, Diedrich Bader as Booster Gold and many more iconic DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains. Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!) serves as executive producer, with Butch Lukic (Justice League, Batman Beyond), Alan Burnett (Batman: The Animated Series) and Jim Krieg (Green Lantern: The Animated Series) as producers.

  • Turner, ASA Announce Discop Animation Pitch Winner

Turner, ASA Announce Discop Animation Pitch Winner

The 2016 edition of DISCOP Africa has wrapped in Johannesburg, attracting more than 1,250 international and regional media professionals eager to take advantage of the continent’s growing TV and film industries. This year’s event featured the first toon-targeted pavilion, The Animation Lounge, presented by Animation South Africa in partnership with Turner, DISCOP, MIFA, Animation Magazine, The Animation School and Digital Lab Africa.

“DISCOP Joburg 2016 was a landmark for the African animation industry,” said Nick Wilson, Chair of the Export Missions Committee of ASA and coordinator of The Animation Lounge. “We had more than 50 animation professionals in attendance, an increase of 200% on last year’s event and, for the first time, 20 students were in attendance. We intend to grow the footprint of The Animation Lounge at future DISCOP events across the continent in dialogue with animation professionals in multiple countries and with the incredible support of our partners and sponsors.”

Global media giant Turner, which has announced its intent to expand its animation distribution, broadcasting and production in Africa, was also the sponsoring partner of the inaugural Turner Kids’ Animation Pitching Program. Working with the ASA team, Turner Kids’ regional Senior Programming & Acquisitions Manager, Ariane Suveg, served as head judge for the contest and provided crucial advice to the finalists as they honed their final presentations.

“As Turner, we have been extremely impressed by the amazing creative energy present within each of the animation pitches. This energy, together with the fresh storylines, has reinforced our investment into the competition and our promise to mentor further the overall winner and runner-up,” said Suveg. “Sponsoring the animation pitch competition has provided us with an invaluable opportunity to meet new talent and innovative animation creators from Africa, and to be exposed to some really inspiring local animation projects.”

Triumphing over the five-entry first round and three-person final round was overall winner Talia Sanhewe, representing Punch Monkey Studio’s Cloud Life. The project is a heartening and charmingly offbeat tale of reconnection between a dot.com-era evil genius and his heroic daughter. Wendy Spinks of Zeropoint Studios was named runner-up for Hatch.

Sanhewe won the grand prize package of MIFA accreditation for the 2017 event in Annecy, a subscription to Animation Magazine and $2,000 cash sponsored by Turner, which also provided a $1,000 award for the runner-up.

The other competition contenders were Rudolph Boonzaaier, Izi Codron and Daniel Buckland, who proceeded to the expert judging round with Spinks and Sanhewe. The panel included Suveg, Wilson, Luxury Msiza (etc), Renee Williams (SABC) and Serge Noukoue (Cote Ouest).

“This year’s DISCOP Joburg has presented us with many areas of potential and growth for the African animation industry,” said Wilson. “And, with Turner pioneering in this territory, we are assured of some exciting changes, challenges, and triumphs going forward, ensuring that our creative voices as Africans continue to be heard.”

  • ‘Your Name’ LA Oscar Run Set for Dec. 2-8

‘Your Name’ LA Oscar Run Set for Dec. 2-8

Funimation Films will present the Oscar-qualifying theatrical run for Makoto Shinkai’s animated feature Your Name at the Laemmle Music Hall in Los Angeles, December 2-8. Advance tickets are now on sale online or at the theater box office. The official North American wide release is being planned for early 2017.

Currently under consideration for the Best Animated Feature category for the 89th annual Academy Awards, Your Name is Japan’s highest-grossing film of 2016 with a box office take of more than $173 million — surpassing the last two Hayao Miyazaki features. Your Name, produced by Shinkai’s regular collaborators at CoMix Wave Films, is the first anime feature not produced by Studio Ghibli to gross more than $96 million at the Japanese box office, and is the country’s seventh-highest grossing movie of all time — beating out megahits like James Cameron’s Avatar and J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

    Synopsis:

The day the stars fell, two lives changed forever. High schoolers Mitsuha and Taki are complete strangers living separate lives. But one night, they suddenly switch places. Mitsuha wakes up in Taki’s body, and he in hers. This bizarre occurrence continues to happen randomly, and the two must adjust their lives around each other. Yet, somehow, it works. They build a connection and communicate by leaving notes, messages, and more importantly, an imprint.

When a dazzling comet lights up the night’s sky, it dawns on them. They want something more from this connection—a chance to meet, an opportunity to truly know each other. Tugging at the string of fate, they try to find a way to each other. But distance isn’t the only thing keeping them apart. Is their bond strong enough to face the cruel irony of time? Or is their meeting nothing more than a wish upon the stars?

Titmouse & Viacom NEXT Unleash VR ‘Smash Party’

Titmouse, the Emmy Award-winning animation studio behind Metalocalypse, Superjail!, The Venture Bros., Son of Zorn and Motorcity — to name a few — have combined forces with emerging technology group Viacom NEXT, announcing the upcoming release of a truly cathartic virtual reality experience: Smash Party.

Inspired by the studio’s annual Smash Party, which invites attendees to get their aggro out by smashing objects inside a safety cage, Smash Party is a free, interactive VR experience now in beta, developed by Viacom NEXT for the HTC Vive. Smash Party-goers at this year’s 10th annual event got to be the first to try out the game (no safety gear required) at the Titmouse lot. And HTV Vive owners will be able to try out some virtual destruction when Smash Party launches by the end of the year.

In-game, smashers can select from everyday items like TVs, vases and toilet bowls created by Titmouse president and founder Chris Prynoski (Nerdland) that can be destroyed with uncommon results in front of a cheering crowd of technicolor creatures. The more property damage inflicted, the higher up the leaderboard players will climb.

“We took the real life experience of smashing things with a baseball bat and made a virtual reality experience where you can smash things with a baseball bat,” Prynoski explains, succinctly. “I’ve created stuff like knife-wielding cats and fire vomiting demons in VR, but I haven’t yet destroyed them in VR. Now I finally can.”

“We are actively working on truly immersive VR experiences and love working with Titmouse to bring to life the ultimate Smash Party experience.” said Chaki Ng, SVP, Viacom NEXT. “It has been the perfect opportunity for our team to dream up a novel experience through so many smashable objects.”

  • RSC’s ‘Tempest’ Goes 21st Century with Real-Time Digital Character

RSC’s ‘Tempest’ Goes 21st Century with Real-Time Digital Character

For the first time in its four-century history, William Shakespeare’s stormy fantasy The Tempest will be presented with all the wonder and magic that the playwright could only have dreamt of, thanks to a collaboration between the Royal Shakespeare Company and Intel, in association with The Imaginarium Studios, the production company founded in 2011 by filmmakers Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish.

The new performance will provide a major update on the tale’s 1611 debut by utilizing a completely digital character — the first in an RSC production — thanks to Xsens’ real-time, MVN motion-capture technology.

One of the Bard of Avon’s last plays, The Tempest tells the story of Prospero, an exiled magician who decides to settle old scores when his rivals sail past his solitary island. With the help of his magical servant Ariel, Prospero forces the ship to his shores, ready to right old wrongs through magic and cunning. One of the unique parts of Ariel is that the character features more stage directions than almost any other in Shakespeare’s bibliography, making it one of the most complicated to stage.

“For this performance to work, Ariel needed to fly, walk in space and collaborate with other performers in the moment,” said Ben Lumsden of The Imaginarium Studios. “Without unrestrictive performance capture technology like MVN, Ariel would have been just another landlocked cast member in a costume.”

In the midst of the performance, Ariel morphs from an ethereal spirit, to a water nymph, to a harpy. RSC and Imaginarium achieved these transformations by capturing actor Mark Quartley through Xsens mo-cap sensors placed inside his costume. When Ariel transforms into something more than human, the actor’s movements are projected onstage and in the air as a digital avatar. The flexibility of Xsens tech enables Quartley to interact with his castmates in human form, and shapeshift live on stage.

We are such stuff as dreams are made on…

The Xsens MVN system is used to track the actor’s performance, then the data is run through Autodesk’s MotionBuilder and from there into Epic’s Unreal Engine 4. The video output is then sent to d3 servers powered by Intel’s Xeon processor connected to the RSC lighting desk, which in turn controls 27 projectors located around the stage.

“Inertial motion capture is changing how far productions can push their craft, bringing high-end digital characters into live shows,” said Hein Beute product manager at Xsens. “With The Tempest, the RSC is creating a real-time application that is both immediate and novel, something audiences always want to see on their nights out.”

RSC’s latest production of The Tempest is running at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon until January 21, 2017. Tickets are available at www.rsc.org.uk.
