ASIFA-Hollywood has made a $20,000 donation to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences to assist with the curation and documentation of a major collection of original production artwork for Richard Williams’ The Thief and the Cobbler. Donated by Miramax, the collection includes thousands of hand-painted cels, pencil animation and watercolor backgrounds, encompassing more than 20 years of work.
While the notoriously troubled film was eventually finished under the auspices of a completion bond company, much of the material was removed from Williams’ studio and cut from the theatrical release. The two decades of its production employed some of the world’s best animation artists, and the film serves as an important bridge between two generations of animators. The hope is to have the collection available to researchers in the New Year.
“Over the years, the Motion Picture Academy has been a wonderful partner for us,” said Frank Gladstone, ASIFA’s Executive Director. “Much of our own ASIFA-Hollywood Archive is housed there, so it was gratifying when the Academy asked for our support and even more gratifying when our entire executive board voted unanimously to provide the funds.”
“I had the rare privilege of viewing The Thief and The Cobbler’s gorgeous hand-crafted artwork in person at Williams London Studio, and can state unequivocally that its magnificence has no rival in the history of animation,” said Sue Shakespeare, member of the ASIFA Board of Directors and President, Creative Capers Entertainment, Inc. “ASIFA is thrilled to be able to support the Academy in this important mission.”
“Williams’ vision for, and execution of, the animation in The Thief and The Cobbler stands as one of the greatest achievements in the history of classic hand-drawn animation,” noted Jerry Beck, President of ASIFA-Hollywood. “It is our honor to assist the Academy in preserving this important work for future generations to study and enjoy.”
ASIFA-Hollywood is the largest chapter of the Association Internationale du Film d’Animation, and supports a wide range of activities and preservation efforts through its membership — including the Animation Archive, Animation Aid Foundation, the Animation Educators Forum, the Animation Center building initiative, film preservation, screenings, special events and festival support.
The chapter also produces the Annie Awards. The 44th annual ceremony is set for Saturday, February 4, 2017. Learn more at www.asifa-hollywood.org.

“As our industry undergoes huge evolution, the impact of digital disruption and changing consumer behaviour continues to put audience insight right at the heart of our business strategy,” said Gerhard Zeiler, President, Turner International, to whom van der Wal will report. “This new division will ensure that we assess new opportunities for innovation, development and acquisition through the lens of relevant, robust consumer data and through a realigned, agile organisational structure. Polish animation studio Platige Image and Portuguese audiovisual shop Imaginew have joined forces to produce a new animated feature titled Fatima, a dynamic, colorful 3D film inspired by the Three Secrets of Fatima and created in celebration of the centenary of the Our Lady of Fatima Apparition. Platige is handling production and creative duties for the project, due out in May 2018.
A lively story about finding faith and holding on to values in the modern world, Fatima follows a 12-year old girl named Madalena and her sweet, tech-savvy brother, Tomás. As the tale begins, Madalena has just lost her faith when suddenly a beautiful and intriguing girl named Lily and a clumsy, slightly pushy boy named Angelo enter their lives. Lily soon becomes Madalena’s guiding light, but who will prove to be a true friend at the end of the day?
“The events in Fatima and their 100th anniversary were the inspiration for writing the screenplay. This is also is why the story’s leading characters are children. In much the same way as a powerful religious experience influenced the lives of three little shepherds 100 years ago, the main character in our movie will face the same values,” says Imaginew CEO Rui Pedro, who created the concept and is executive producer on Fatima. “We hope that our film will not only provide the audience with excellent entertainment, but will also give them reasons for thought and conversations about the role of faith in their lives.”
“It’s a multidimensional, bittersweet story about love, friendship but also pain, and refusal to accept events that we don’t understand and concede,” adds Platige Image executive producer Piotr Sikora. “… We want our story to be visually fascinating and attractive. We want to reach a diverse audience, children but also their parents. Fatima will be an enormous and challenging project. I hope that thanks to the way we show the experiences of two children we will be able to bring a whole new quality to the market.”
GFM Animation, the just-announced toon production and sales division of UK sales agency GFM Films, has released the first look at CG feature project Here Comes The Grump, Screen Daily revealed. The fantasy adventure is currently in production for Prime Focus World (London) and LatAm animation powerhouse Ánima Estudios.
“Animation is well underway and the film will be completed in the first part of 2017. Our artists are pushing the limits to put as much quality and humor into every last frame,” Greg Gavanski, Prime Focus’ London-based head of animation, told SD.
Adapted from the old Mirisch-Geoffrey DePatie-Freleng Enterprises cartoon 1969-1970), the film will center on a teenage boy who is magically transported to a distant land, where he must foil the schemes of a cantankerous wizard called The Grump.
Ice Age: The Meltdown screenwriter Jim Hecht wrote the script, and the project features designs by Craig Kellman (character designer: Madagascar, Hotel Transylvania). Former Simpsons animation producer Bill Schultz is consulting on the film.
In addition to Here Comes The Grump, GFM Animation (announced as a GFM Films sister company Nov. 1) has a number of previously announced and new projects under its umbrella. GFM Films’ Hugo, Stonerunner have moved over.

And stop-motion animated musical Codename: Housewife, inspired by a Korean short — the legendary Will Vinton (Return to Oz) and Korean claymation director Hong Sukwha will co-direct the tale of an ordinary housewife who is enlisted as an international spy, tasked with saving the world’s greatest rock stars from mysterious disappearances. Schultz is co-producing as well as China Film Group.

Funimation Films has confirmed that Japanese film Your Name. has made the official consideration list in the Best Animated Feature category for the 89th Annual Academy Awards. The box office hit will be vying for one of five nomination spots in the 2017 Oscars race. Funimation acquired North American distribution rights earlier this year from Toho Co. Ltd. in Japan.
Your Name. (Kimi no Na wa) is the latest film from director Makoto Shinkai, who has twice been nominated for the Annecy Cristal (Children Who Chase Lost Voices in 2012 and A Gathering of Cats in 2008). This new success won the Best Animated Feature award at Sitges and has to date earned over 17.9 billion yen (approx. $170 million USD) since it opened August 26 — making it the highest grossing film of the year.
The film is also the first anime feature to gross more than 10 billion yen at the Japanese box office that was not directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Your Name. has already surpassed Miyazaki’s Ponyo (2008) and The Wind Rises (2013), and is currently the seventh highest grossing film of all time in Japan.
“We’re thrilled to have Your Name. on the list of contenders for a Best Animated Feature nomination,” said Gen Fukunaga, CEO and founder of Funimation. “It is a masterpiece of animation from director Makoto Shinkai and is definitely worthy of Oscar consideration. We look forward to releasing it in theaters in 2017.”

They build a connection and communicate by leaving notes, messages, and more importantly, an imprint. Tugging at the string of fate, they try to find a way to each other. But distance isn’t the only thing keeping them apart. Is their bond strong enough to face the cruel irony of time? Or is their meeting nothing more than a wish upon the stars?
