Watch Next Scores Timely Deals for ‘Nate Is Late’

Philippe Alessandri’s paris-based animation production house Watch Next Media announces that following last year’s co-development deal with France Televisions, the French public broadcaster has signed a license agreement for the production of comedy series Nate Is Late (52 x 11).

The series has also been picked up by Germany’s leading kids and family network Super RTL.

Further, Watch Next Media has struck a co-production deal for the series with Sydney-based Three’s A Company (Sally Bollywood), which has pre-sold the show to Australia’s Channel 9 network. All production work for Nate Is Late will be done in France and Australia.

“Eighteen months after the creation of the company, we are proud to launch our first production in our own studio, which will handle all the production work from writing to compositing,” said Alessandri. “It is a particular source of satisfaction for us that three broadcasters as diverse as France Télévisions, Super RTL and Channel 9 joined us on this project, demonstrating how universal the series’ concept is.”

Nate Is Late follows the daily routine of 10-year-old Nate and Malika, who are thrust into incredible adventures as they walk to school every morning. It is created by Sylvain Huchet and Peter Saisselin (Gawayn, Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks) and directed by Jeremy Guiter, with designs by David Maingault and Antoine Birot (Counterfeit Cat). Production is set to start by the end of the year.

New ‘Rogue One Trailer’ Shows “Rebellions Are Built on Hope”

Each new spot released for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story reveals a juicier bite of the plot, and the latest trailer is no exception. The trailer debuted on Good Morning America and tugs at the heartstrings right from the beginning, as we see a young Jyn Erso watch as something happens to the father, leading to their separation. We quickly learn what the Empire wanted with Jyn’s dad, and that this man who set out to protect his daughter has ended up putting the entire galaxy in danger.

(Hint: he had something to do with a certain large space object that’s no moon.)

Jyn herself has more of the plucky, optimistic hero about her in this trailer, rallying her ragtag band of rebels with the stirring, t-shirt worthy line: “Rebellions are built on hope.” After wrapping her head around getting broken out of Imperial imprisonment by a bunch of armed strangers, that is.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One hits theaters December 16 on standard screens and 3D, RealD 3D and IMAX 3D. The cast is lead by Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, with her teammates Diego Luna (Cassian Andor), Donnie Yen (Chirrut Imwe), Alan Tudyk (voice of K-2SO), Riz Ahmed (Bodhi Rook), with Jiang Wen (Baze Malbus) and Forest Whitaker (Saw Gerrera). Mads Mikkelsen plays Jyn’s father, Galen, and Ben Mendelsohn is Imperial baddy, Director Orson Krennic.

  • Studio Ghibli Artist Michiyo Yasuda Dies Age 77

Studio Ghibli Artist Michiyo Yasuda Dies Age 77

Michiyo Yasuda — a widely respected animator and color artist whose four decade career included a span at Studio Ghibli from its first feature (Castle in the Sky, 1986) to Hayao Miyazaki’s last feature (The Wind Rises, 2008) — has died at age 77.

Born in Tokyo in 1939, Yasuda’s career began before her 20th birthday, in the ink-and-paint department at Toei Doga (now Toei Animation). The young artist honed her skills working on TV series and commercial projects before adding the feature animation department to her rounds.

While at Toei, Yasuda met future Studio Ghibli founders Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki on the production of Little Norse Prince (1968). She first worked with Miyazaki as a color designer on the 1976 series 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother.

Yasuda would spend most of her career creating color designs for these two legendary animation directors. Her formidable credits list includes pre-Ghibli films like Future Boy Conan (1978) and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) as well as the studio’s Oscar-winning masterpiece Spirited Away (2001) and Howl’s Moving Castle (2004). Yasuda announced her retirement after Miyazaki’s Ponyo, but rejoined the studio to work on The Wind Rises.

“What I like best is when I am building up the colors in my head, thinking of how to get the tone worked out,” Yasuda told the LA Times in a 2009 interview about Ponyo and her career. “Color has a meaning, and it makes the film more easily understood. Colors and pictures can enhance what the situation is on screen.”

VIZ Media is releasing The Art of Castle in the Sky on Oct. 18; Yasuda served as color designer on the film.

‘Space Jam’ Getting 20th Anniversary Blu-ray Treatment

Unbelievably, Space Jam is turning 20 years old this year, and to celebrate this anniversary milestone for the classic animation-live action hybrid flick, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release a new Blu-ray Combo Pack in steelbook packaging on November 15.

Space Jam stars six-time NBA champion Michael Jordan and WB’s classic Looney Tunes gang in a dimension-bending sports showdown. The action unfolds as Jordan is kidnapped from his live-action world by Bugs Bunny to foil a gang of space creatures by acting as a can’t-lose ringer in an epic basketball game to save the cartoon characters from a nefarious kidnapping scheme.

The film also starred Wayne Knight, Theresa Randle and the voice of Danny DeVito, with appearances by Bill Murray, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing. Produced by Ivan Reitman and directed by Joe Pytka, Space Jam won an Annie Award for Best Individual Achievement: Technical Achievement, and a Grammy for the original song “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly.

In addition to the iconic film, the Blu-ray Combo Pack (SRP $19.98) includes commentary from director Joe Pytka, Bugs Bunny (voiced by Billy West) and Daffy Duck (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker); Jammin featurette with Bugs and Jordan, and music videos including Seal’s cover of “Fly Like an Eagle” and the Monstars anthem “Hit ‘Em High,” performed by ’90s hip hop luminaries B-Real, Busta Rhymes, Coolio, LL Cool J and Method Man.
