    Spark Animation Fest Highlights Revealed

Set for October 20-23 in Vancouver, the Spark Animation Festival will be showcasing an international selection of screenings at the Vancity Theatre and Scotiabank Theatre. The event will also include a Business Symposium, Conference, Career Fair and Artist Alley.

Among the film highlights is the Canadian theatrical premiere of Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, which will open the festival Thursday night. The visually lush fantasy-adventure features a sequence produced by Vancouver’s Image Engine, who are sending a delegation of production supervisors to make a presentation on the production during the Spark Conference.

On Saturday, Spark will pay tribute to Michael Arias — the American-born director credited as the first non-Japanese director of a major anime feature. There will be a regional premiere screening of his latest film, Harmony, based on the book by Project Itoh, followed by a 10th anniversary screening of his globally acclaimed Tekkonkinkreet, based on the Eisner-winning manga by Taiyo Matsumoto.

As part of the Animation for a Cause initiative, proceeds from Spark screenings go to Covenant House Vancouver, which aids homeless youth.

On Sunday, there will be a selection of European works on offer. The evening will open with Dofus – Book 1: Julith, based on the hugely popularly MMORPG and transmedia brand. Following will be the crudely funny, adult animation Bad Cat by Mehmet Kurtulus and Ayse Unal. The festival will close out with Psychonauts, the Forgotten Children from Spain, co-directed by Pedro Rivero and Alberto Vazquez, adapted from Vazquez’s graphic novel.

Proceeds from the Sunday evening screenings will be donated to the Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocystosis Care Fund, in memory of VIFF and Vancity Theatre’s Sumit Guha.

MONDO Animation Coming to VRV Streaming

MONDO’s adult-skewing animated content — from subversive comedies to horror, drama and action series — will be joining recently announced streaming service VRV, from Ellation. The SVOD service is set to launch later this year.

“Young adults have clearly embraced animation on all platforms, both traditional broadcast and cable as well as digital, where MONDO has amassed more than 3 billion views,” said MONDO founder and CEO John Evershed. “As Ellation has already shown with Crunchyroll, there’s a large audience willing to pay a monthly subscription for great story-driven, episodic animated content. All of these factors make VRV a great next step for us, especially as we focus on delivering longer, ‘binge-worthy’ versions of our series with even higher production value.”

The channel, MONDO Premium, will be the exclusive US SVOD home to a range of animated shows, movies and shorts aimed at adults ages 18-34. Programming will be a blend of MONDO’s established hits and several brand-new series, to be announced soon.

“We’re sourcing, developing and programing shows that animation fans have been clamoring for, shows you simply can’t find on TV or YouTube, from creators with unique points of view,” said MONDO Chief Creative Officer Brendan Burch. “We want Mondo Premium to become a showcase for new forms of adult animation like horror, sci-fi, action, drama and graphic-novel adaptations while continuing our long history of comedy.”

MONDO Premium is the latest VRV channel to be announced, with other content partners including Crunchyroll, Nerdist, College Humor, Geek & Sundry and Seeso. VRV is a fandom-oriented service that will carry programming and interactive content. Ellation is majority owned by Otter Media, a joint venture between AT&T and The Chernin Group.

Fox & Blue Sky Adapting ‘Frogkisser!’ as Hybrid Flick

Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios will be producing a live-action/animation musical feature based on Garth Nix’s upcoming book, Frogkisser! — a tongue-in-cheek take on the whole enchanted amphibian fairytale schtick. The project is being overseen by Fox VP for animation, Ralph Millero (Peanuts).

The film will center on Princess Anya, who has the “unfortunate ability to break curses with a magic-assisted kiss.” When her evil stepmother’s new husband, her “evil stepstepfather,” tries to take over the kingdom, Anya goes on the run. With her unlikely companions — including a loyal talking dog, a boy thief trapped in the body of a newt, and a mischievous wizard — the princess embarks on a quest to save the kingdom and uncover her magical potential.

The project is in line with recent Twentieth Century Fox hire Nate Hopper’s mission to expand the Fox Animation portfolio with the inclusion of more family-targeted hybrid projects. Hopper was a lead creative executive at Sony Pictures Animation, where he worked on hybrid blockbuster The Smurfs in addition to fully-animated fare like Open Season, Surf’s Up and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

Frogkisser! by Garth Nix will be published Feb. 28, 2017 by Scholastic (NorAm) and later that spring by Picadilly Press (UK). Nix is a prolific Australian author who has penned fantasy series The Old Kingdom, The Seventh Tower and The Keys to the Kingdom.

Disney Taps Jon Favreau to Helm Live-Action ‘Lion King’

After the incredible success of The Jungle Book this year — both at the box office and in terms of creative tech wizardry — Disney is teaming back up with director Jon Favreau for a live-action remake of beloved animated feature The Lion King. The Walt Disney Company confirmed the reported reunion Tuesday morning.

The announcement cited “the technologically groundbreaking smash hit The Jungle Book, directed by Favreau” and noted the film has earned $965.8 million worldwide since its April debut. It is the fourth highest-grossing movie worldwide and domestically this year, so far, according to charts from the-numbers.com and boxofficemojo.com.

The original The Lion King (1994) directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff is also a box office titan, with a lifetime global gross of $968.8 million ($422.8 million domestically) — it ranks as one of the highest grossing animated films of all time, beaten out only by other Disney and Pixar titles. The 2D film won two Academy Awards, for original score (Hans Zimmer) and original song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” (Elton John, Tim Rice). It also won two Grammy Awards.

Like the upcoming Beauty and the Beast remake starring Emma Watson, the new Lion King project follows the creation of smash hit Broadway stage show, which debuted in 1997 and earned six Tony Awards (and still runs around the world to this day).

No specifics about casting or how the studio will tackle a “live” take on the animated classic have been revealed, and it will be interesting to see if the project takes a musical tack like Beauty and the Beast or a more dramatic approach like Jungle Book.

Dave Filoni Put in Creative Charge of ‘Star Wars’ Animation

Just after season three of Disney XD’s popular action series Star Wars Rebels premiered, a statement issued by Lucasfilm to Big Shiny Robot revealed that while Dave Filoni has debarked the show as supervising director, he is only growing in the Force as far as the Star Wars animated universe is concerned.

While Justin Ridge steps up as the show’s supervising director, Filoni is remaining involved while moving up the Lucasfilm creative ladder to oversee development of future animation projects for the company.

    According to a Lucasfilm spokesperson:

“Dave is still just as involved as ever – overseeing all aspects of Star Wars Rebels production as Executive Producer and occasionally directing episodes. In many ways, mentoring Justin and moving him into the role as Supervising Director has made it possible for Dave to be even more immersed in the writing and story structure of the show as well as creatively overseeing future animation development. Justin started with Lucasfilm Animation on the first season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and worked with Dave before that on Avatar: The Last Airbender, so they’ve been working together for quite some time.”

In addition to Clone Wars and Rebels, Ridge has directed episodes of The Cleveland Show and Black Dynamite. He worked on Airbender as a storyboard artist.
