Adapted for the screen by writer and executive producer Hugh O’Conor, The Overcoat is based on Nikolai Gogol’s classic short story about an office worker (Cillian Murphy) who saves all his money to buy a new coat in time for Christmas — only for fate to take a ghostly turn.

CBeebies and FME Kids Engineer ‘Bitz & Bob’

CBeebies Controller Kay Benbow has commissioned a new animated comedy-adventure from FremantleMedia Kids & Family, Bitz & Bob (44 x 11). The groundbreaking series aimed at preschoolers combines funny, whimsical stories and key STEAM principles as it follows the antics of eight-year-old inventor Bitz and her little brother Bob. Part of CBeebies five-year co-production partnership with FME Kids, the show is slated for 2017.

Engineering adventurer Bitz loves to play and make amazing creations at home in her “Maker-space” treehouse. She and her brother Bob weave these inventions into magical stories where her creations come to life and lead them on epic journeys. Inevitably things go just a little haywire and Bitz has to use her special “Engineer-o-vision” to visualise and enact inventive solutions that empower her and her friends to help “invent a way to save the day!”

“We always aim to inspire on CBeebies and I hope that Bitz & Bob will encourage a new generation of engineer,” says Benbow. “Bitz is a wonderful female role model, she is full of creative ideas and energy that will take our viewers on adventures that we know will fire their imaginations.”

Bitz & Bob boasts an international writing team consulting with sector experts from the U.K. and the U.S.: Helen Heggie, Director of STEMFirst, and Dr. Lisa Regalla, Deputy Director of Maker Ed. The series is being produced by CBeebies Productions and FremantleMedia Kids & Family, with CG animation by Jellyfish Pictures. FMK’s Bob Higgins and CBeebies’ Vanessa Amberleigh serve as exec producers. FMK holds full global rights.

  • Elie Dekel Tapped to Guide ‘MST3K’ Licensing Worldwide

Elie Dekel Tapped to Guide ‘MST3K’ Licensing Worldwide

Satellite of Love LLC — in partnership with Shout! Factory and series creator Joel Hodgson — has hired on former Saban Brands president Elie Dekel as strategic brand advisor and worldwide consumer products licensing agent for iconic entertainment brand Mystery Science Theater 3000. Dekel will guide the branding, licensing and expansion of the long-running, cult-hit TV series.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is one of those rare entertainment brands that has consistently grown its audience over more than 25 years through smart comedy, creative innovation, and a sincerely devoted fan community,” said Dekel. “Now, that legion of passionate ‘MSTies’ has banded together to bring MST3K back to life, with the largest film and television crowdfunding campaign ever. The result is an all-new 11th season coming soon to a massive and highly devoted audience.”

Satellite of Love and Dekel have been working to develop a global licensing program for MST3K, and will be meeting potential partners, licensees and retailers at Licensing Expo in Las Vegas (June 21-23) to discuss opportunities across all categories.

Created by Joel Hodgson, MST3K first aired in 1989 and ran for 11 years, though 198 episodes and a feature film. The show features a human host and his robot sidekicks stranded aboard the spaceship Satellite of Love, where they are forced to watch outrageously bad B movies by mad scientists. Their only chance for rebellion? Mercilessly mock the terrible sci-fi and horror schlock being beamed up.

The series won a Peabody Award in 1993, and was nominated for writing Emmys in 1994 and 1995.  In late 2015, Shout! Factory acquired the global IP rights to this long-running cult comedy series and entered into an agreement with creator Joel Hodgson to produce new episodes. A Kickstarter campaign last winter surpassed the goal of fully funding the production of 14 new episodes and set a new world record as the highest-funded Film and TV crowdfunding campaign of all time.

Animatsu Brings ‘Corner of the World’ to Annecy

Animatsu Entertainment, a new London-based producer, licensor and distributor of anime in the U.K. & Ireland (with global expansion in the cards), has secured global distribution rights to highly anticipated period feature In This Corner of the World (ono Sekai no Katasumi ni), which it is introducing to buyers this week at the Annecy festival and MIFA market in the Works in Progress program.

In This Corner of the World tells the story of the adolescent Suzu, who in 1944 moves to the small town of Kure in Hiroshima to live with her husband’s family. Suzu’s life is thrown into chaos when her town is bombed during World War II. Her perseverance and courage, however, underpin this heart-warming and inspirational tale of the everyday challenges faced by the Japanese in the midst of a violent, war-torn country.

“There have been previous anime films set around the devastation in Hiroshima, but none with the ultimately uplifting and positive message of In This Corner of the World, so we can’t wait to bring this beautiful film to Annecy,” Animatsu COO Jerome Mazandarani said. “We believe the rest of the world will share our enthusiasm for this story.”

Based on the award-winning manga by Fumiyo Kouno, the film adaptation is produced by GENCO with animation studio MAPPA and is written and directed by Sunao Katabuchi. Katabuchi began his career working with Hayao Miyazaki before pursuing his own projects like Mai Mai Miracle. GENCO’s Taro Maki and MAPPA’s Masao Maruyama are producers for the project, arriving in Japanese theaters this October.

“War is the opposite of daily life, yet daily life must go on even through war. And perfectly normal people can achieve this miraculous feat in the most extreme circumstances one can imagine,” says Katabuchi. “That’s what this film explores. I believe those very specific details in this film help viewers perceive the infinite emotions experienced by these absolutely normal people.”

In This Corner of the World is partially supported by a successful crowdfunding drive, which raised 39 million yen (approx. $350,000).

APD 2017 Receives Creative Europe MEDIA Funds

Stuttgart’s Animation Production Day has received funding for its 2017 edition from the Creative Europe MEDIA program — making it the sole new addition to the “Access to Markets” section based in Germany. Held annually during the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film and FMX events, APD has grown steadily over the past few years.

The 2016 APD attracted more than 140 producers, broadcasters, distributors and investors from 18 countries which undertook 600-plus one-on-one meetings to hash out possible co-production and funding opportunities for the 39 participating projects. Despite the animation concepts often being in early development stages, over 30% of APD presented productions are realized. The 2017 event is set for May 4 and 5.

Along with the funding announcement, APD has confirmed its first partner for 2017: the Hamburg Animation Awards. This international competition for animation students and recent graduates is organized by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, and this year holds its 13th edition on June 22. Short films are presented to a 15-person expert jury as well as industry representatives and compete for five cash prizes totally over 11,000 EU. The new partnership will grant the Hamburg Animation Award winner accreditation for APD 2017 in addition to the prize money, supported by Filmförderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein.

  • Warner Animation Sets ‘Smallfoot’ for Spring 2018

Warner Animation Sets ‘Smallfoot’ for Spring 2018

Warner Animation Group announced at the Annecy festival on Tuesday that Warner Bros. has set a release window of Spring 2018 for the Group’s original animated feature Smallfoot. The news was revealed by producer Brad Lewis during the unveiling of seven sequences from Storks — WAG’s second feature release and first original concept — coming to theaters September 23.

Smallfoot is a fresh take on the cryptozoological Yeti myth, centered on a Yeti who is convinced that the elusive creatures known as “humans” really do exist. The film is based on an original pitch from Sergio Pablos (Despicable Me), who is set to direct. John Requa and Glenn Ficarra (Crazy, Stupid, Love, Cats & Dogs) serve as writers on the project. The character design and most of the story reel will be created at Pablos’ SPA studios in Madrid before moving into animation production at one of WB’s partner studios.

This is a slightly different tack from WAG’s general production model, according to Warner Bros. Pictures’ President – Animation, Digital Production and VFX, Christopher deFaria, who during the Annecy presentation described Los Angeles-based WAG as a “front-end” studio handling storyboarding, character design, concept art, editorial, story and voice recording.

Speaking to the Storks footage, Lewis and deFaria said that the film underscores the emerging style of the studio, which channels the tradition of Warner Bros. Looney Tunes cartoons. Storks is being directed by Pixar veteran Doug Sweetland and live-action helmer Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Neighbors) and follows Junior, a stork, and Tulip, a girl who works at the factory, who have to set things right after the storks’ baby making machinery is accidentally triggered for the first time in years. The animation is being produced by Sony in Vancouver.

WAG’s release schedule also includes The LEGO Batman Movie (Feb. 10, 2017), LEGO Ninjago (Sept. 22, 2017), The LEGO Movie Sequel and S.C.O.O.B.

Jeffrey Katzenberg Receives First Annecy Golden Ticket

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the art and industry of animation, the organizers of the Annecy Film Festival presented DreamWorks Animation’s CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg with the festival’s first ever “Golden Ticket,” a lifetime pass to the French animation festival. A long-time supporter of the event, Katzenberg was taken by surprise by the presentation.

The Golden Ticket was presented to Katzenberg at the end of the Keynote Masterclass with acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro, who provided the 1,000 attendees at the Grande Salle Bonlieu a preview of his upcoming series Trollhunters, produced by DreamWorks Animation for Netflix.

“Not only has Jeffrey been a long-time collaborator and supporter of all of us here in Annecy, his track-record in animation is nothing short of legendary,” said Annecy’s Artistic Director Marcel Jean, as he presented the award. “From reviving the industry with such critically acclaimed films like Beauty and The Beast, and The Lion King, to launching DreamWorks Animation and giving us such memorable characters in films like Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, and How to Train Your Dragon, there is no one more deserving of a lifetime pass to our festival.”

The Annecy festival opened Monday evening with a gala screening of The Red Turtle, and runs through June 18. (www.annecy.org)

‘Pete’s Dragon’ Trailer Is a Modern Flight of Fancy

Disney has released a new trailer for its update on classic hybrid kids flick Pete’s Dragon, landing in theaters August 12. The spot sets up the story of Pete, a semi-feral child found living in the woods. But Pete wasn’t as alone in the wild as he seemed, and the trailer offers a glimpse at the furry green dragon who happens to be the boy’s best friend (and some of the creature’s magical abilities).

Pete’s Dragon is directed by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints), who, with Toby Halbrooks, also penned the screenplay inspired by the original story by Seton I. Miller and S.S. Field. The film stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence and Robert Redford. Jim Whitaker (The Finest Hours, Friday Night Lights) produces with Barrie M. Osborne (LotR: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Great Gatsby) as executive producer.

    Synopsis:

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

    Synopsis:
