    FMX ’16 Sets Attendance Record

The 2016 FMX conference on animation, effects, games and transmedia wrapped up in Stuttgart on Friday, with the 21st edition welcoming 3,500 attendees — an all-time high for attendance at the event. Visitors flocked to the Haus der Wirtschaft and Gloria Cinema in Stuttgart as well as the Caligari Cinema in Ludwigsburg from 52 countries, as far-flung as Antigua and Barbuda, Malaysia and Singapore to take in workshops, masterclasses, see cutting-edge filmmaking tools at the Marketplace, or showcase their reels at the Recruiting Hub.

“FMX 2016 felt like a cordial and a warm event, and it did justice to its title ‘Blending Realities,’” says Conference Chair Prof. Andreas Hykade. “The different communities came together, exchanged their ideas and were able to give a new, vibrant impetus for the future of digital entertainment.”

Highlights of the Animation programming covered both big studio blockbusters and the indie scene. Two talks delivered insights into Pixar’s Inside Out, which scooped the Oscar for best animation this year. Further presentations spotlighted Zoomania — including a Walt Disney panel discussion — Peanuts, The Little Prince and independent works from artists such as two-time Emmy winner Nick Cross (Cartoon Network) who spoke in the “Wild & Strange” track.

Talks on Effects also covered a rich range of projects. Two-time Oscar winner Rob Legato (Titanic, Hugo) provided insights into the VFX work of The Jungle Book in the Koenig-Karl-Halle. A full 10 case studies illuminated films like the VFX Oscar winner Ex Machina as well as Captain America: Winter Soldier and the latest Star Wars instalment, The Force Awakens. The ILM team for The Force Awakens shared its moving experiences with an exhilarated audience in the Koenig-Karl Halle, the Foyer Koenig-Karl and the Meidinger Saal.

FMX ’16 also dived into the ever growing Virtual Reality sector. VR experiences for movies such as The Martian, The Walk and The Avengers as well as presentations on Epic’s Bullet Train and Crytek’s The Climb were part of an extended VR focus. Jan Pinkava (Google Spotlight Stories), who developed the original idea for the Oscar-winning film Ratatouille, and Bernhard Haux (Oculus Story Studio) were among the countless professionals who contributed to sessions on virtual reality and its implications for storytelling, as did Richard Marks (Sony Computer Entertainment) and Guido Voltolina (Nokia Technologies). David Morin‘s “Virtual Reality for Production” series of presentations dug into the Virtual Production for films such as The Jungle Book, The Martian and Gods of Egypt.

The event’s scope also covered the latest in ground-breaking video games with an impressive motion-capture live performance from the Hellblade crew, looks at Paragon and Halo 5 and Chris O’Reilly‘s new interactive work for Nexus. Also of interest were presentations by speakers from Warner Bros., Pixar, MPC and Double Negative in “The Art and Science of Digital Cinematography” track, a behind-the-scenes look at six-time Oscar winner Mad Max and “Studio Insights” curated by Dave Gouge of Weta Digital.

FMX 2017 is schedule for May 2-5, 2017. Learn more at www.fmx.de.

    APOS News Round-Up

APOS 2016 has wrapped up in Bali, with some notable deals taking place at the international media conference:

Viacom International Media Networks Asia agreed to a multi-year Nickelodeon content deal with LeEco — one of China’s leading online VOD platforms. LeEco gets exclusive broadcast rights for the U.S. Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, and exclusive OTT rights for select Mandarin-dubbed and subtitled episodes of Nick series including Harvey Beaks, Paw Patrol and Rugrats.

VIMN Asia also signed its first regional distribution deal for its Viacom Play Plex apps package with Singapore’s Singtel. Rolling out later this year, the package includes branded apps Nickelodeon Play, Nick Jr. Play, MTV Play and Comedy Central Play. The agreement includes OTT rights for Viacom channels and a new licensing deal for MTV China and MTV Live. Apps will be language and content customized by country.

South Korean OTT service Pooq has picked up Turner’s CNN International and Cartoon Network. Pooq offers both live streaming and VOD and currently serves 400,000 paying subscribers. Non-subscribers will be able to access short previews of Cartoon Network and CNN content in Korea.

Anime network Aniplus has expanded its footprint in the region by signing new deals in Thailand with CTH and content aggregator Mediaplex International, which will distribute a one-hour Aniplus block on DTT platform Now26. The free-to-air weekend blocks will launch with Attack on Titan: Junior High, Knights of Sidonia and Kantai Collection, which will also be available on OTT platform DOONEE. Aniplus has also been picked up by Omnicontent Management in the Philippines for nationwide distribution.

Kids SVOD platform Hopster inked its first Asia deal, teaming with Maxis in Malaysia to offer the service to the telco’s 11 million subscribers. Hopster carries international hit series such as Thomas & Friends, Bob the Builder and Teletubbies.

Turner Broadcasting launched its Korean-theme channel Oh!K and its U.S. network Warner TV on Indonesia’s Transvision pay-TV outlet, which carries superhero shows like DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Gotham, iZombie, Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl. Both channels air shows within hours of their U.S. or Korea broadcast premieres.

In a step backwards, regulators in China have shut down Walt Disney Co.’s neophyte direct-to-consumer streaming platform DisneyLife. Co-venture partner Alibaba Group has reportedly issued refunds to subscribers after saing the service was “down for maintenance.” DisneyLife launched in December 2015, offering a $125 annual subscription which provided access to Disney and Pixar movies, animated series, games, e-books, songs, travel services and Disney theme park and resort information.

  • Pyramide Picks Up ‘The Girl Without Hands’

Pyramide Picks Up ‘The Girl Without Hands’

Arthouse cinema sales company Pyramide International has snapped up worldwide rights to The Girl Without Hands (La jeune fille sans mains) — the feature length debut of French animation filmmaker Sebastien Laudenbach, which is set to screen in competition at the Annecy festival in June. Variety got the scoop on the deal, which marks Pyramide’s first-ever animation acquisition.

Based on a less popularized Brothers Grimm tale (you’ll see why in a second), The Girl Without Hands begins when a hard-pressed miller trades his daughter to the Devil. Because she is so pure, the girl is able to escape the bargain, but loses her hands to the Devil’s rage. Abandoning her family, the miller’s daughter set out on a long journey and crosses paths with the Goddess of Water, a gentle gardiner and the required Prince.

The film is produced by Les Film Sauvages in Paris. Laudenbach directed, wrote and essentially single-handedly crafted The Girl Without Hands. The acclaimed filmmaker is best known for his short films including Vasco (2010) and Clermont-Ferrand prize winner Journal (1998). He also co-directed Daphne ou la belle planted with Sylvain Derosne, which won an Emilie Reynaud Prize last year.

The Girl Without Hands will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the Association for Independent Distribution program dedicated to French cinema. Shellac, which is handling domestic distribution within France, plans to release the film in late November or early December.

Aussie Producers Invited to Cartoon Connection Korea

Four Australian animation production companies have been invited by the Korean Trade Commission to attend the country’s Cartoon Connection 2016, a conference and meeting event for industry professionals from Europe, South Korea and other Asian countries taking place May 2-5 at Jeju.

Set to attend are Flying Bark Productions, Sticky Pictures, BES Animation and Start VR, with Sticky Pictures’ Production Manager Felicity Abbott participating as a guest speaker. The Aussie studios will participate in targeted meetings and be presented with co-production opportunities with Korean and international companies at the market.

Instigated by Australia’s participation at last year’s Screen Forever event in Melbourne, the invitation marks the first time an Australian contingent has been invited to Cartoon Connection since the signing of a Free Trade Agreement with Korea in December of 2014, and follows a series of initiatives by Screen Producers Australia including collaboration with the Korean Trade Commission, CARTOON, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Screen Australia.

“We consider Screen Forever as an important forum and connection point for producers to do business. The conference gave us the opportunity to make introductions that we would not otherwise have had the opportunity to make and the event’s forum enabled us to gain greater insight into what Australian producers need to consider in entering into a co-production agreement with Korea,” said Barbara Stephen, Managing Director, Flying Bark Productions.

Screen Forever 2016 will be held November 15-17 at the Crown Conference Centre Melbourne.
