Gruppo Alcuni to Feature ‘Mini Pet Pals’ at MIPTV

Italian producer Gruppo Alcuni will be attending MIPTV in Cannes next month with a hefty catalog of animated series, including new preschool show Mini Pet Pals — a prequel series to the company’s hit Pet Pals property, distributed in 137 countries worldwide.

Mini Pet Pals (52 x 6) is a Gruppo Alcuni original co-produced with Rai Fiction and directed by Sergio Manfio. The digital 2D animated series reintroduces the six Pet Pals as they’ve never been seen before: Top Hat still has braces, Nameless the chick has just hatched, Pio the frog is growing out of his tadpole phase, and even Holly the cat, Moby the dog and Diva the duck are quite small and helpless.

The series deals with themes of exploring emotions and the daily discoveries of young children. Each episode takes place on the playground and ends with an important lesson. The MIni Pet Pals are helped along by a wise grown-up tree that intervenes at the beginning and end of each episode, or whenever the youngsters need help or advice. The show also incorporates captivating original music, with six different opening themes that each holds a riddle that viewers can solve.

Gruppo Alcuni will be exhibiting at MIPTV as stand P4.B1, booth 403.

  • Filmakademie Wraps Up SARA Autism Project

Filmakademie Wraps Up SARA Autism Project

Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg announces that the R&D department at its world-renowned Institute of Animation has successfully finished its participation in SARA, a DFG-funded project aimed at supporting people on the autism spectrum. SARA exemplifies the team’s broad approach, encompassing the development of technologies and tools for the digital entertainment industry to expand animation’s use beyond entertainment.

    From the announcement:

“People on the autism spectrum have a hard time recognizing expressions or emotional states in other people’s faces. SARA’s objective is to facilitate better facial recognition and consecutive evaluation of nonverbal, facial communication, for a more empathetic human interaction. Over a period of two years, the Institute of Animation, the University Medical Center Freiburg and the University of Konstanz analyzed different levels of abstraction in the depiction of virtual characters and their facial expressions. Abstraction is the chosen tool, because it reduces the high amount of detail in faces, enabling better recognition of facial expressions. Non-photorealistic portrayals cover a wide range of styles – from realistic, to water-color and loose-sketchy.”

Project partners took on different responsibilities for SARA. In Freiberg, research of non-photorealistic rendering and implementation of real-time algorithms was carried out in Constance. The Institute of Animation was responsible for the experiment software, with R&D Engineer Dr. Diana Arellano taking the main lead. Following several publications in the specialist media and presentations at international events such as SIGGRAPH Asia, the test study software for SARA is now available for download on the department’s website. SARA is open source software, which was refined during the project and can be used as the basis for projects to come.

The R&D department will now move forward on other initiatives, including the EU-funded DREAMSPACE that will look into developing tools and prototypes to combine live performances and CG in real-time.

ZDF Taking Trio of Toons to MIPTV

ZDF Enterprises has announced its programming lineup for the 2016 MIPTV market next month. Among weight European dramas and upbeat format offerings, the company will be promoting three animated series under its ZDFE.junior banner.

Aimed at kids and teens, Scream Street (52 x 11) is a fast-paced, stylish, kinda gross comedy-horror extravaganza based on the hit book series. The Coolabi-produced stop-motion show centers on Luke Watson — a regular teen who happens to carry the werewolf gene. When the Government House of Unusual Lifeforms (G.H.O.U.L.) finds out, Luke and his parents are moved to Scream Street, where surfer-dude zombies, sarcastic vampires, martial arts mummies, glamorous witches and other strange creatures put a new spin on community spirit.

For preschoolers, there’s Coconut the Little Dragon (two seasons, 104 x 12 total). The colorful CG series centers on a young dragon named Coconu who has trouble with flying, his fellow dragon Oscar — the only vegetarian in his family — and Matilda the porcupine. The three friends band together to solve any problems they encounter on Dragon Island, making new friends along the way. The show is produced by Caligari.

And The New Adventures of Peter Pan (total 52 x 22) from DQ Entertainment is ready to take off worldwide. The CG-animated adventure series brings back J.M. Barrie’s classic characters as Peter Pan, Wendy, John, Michael and the Lost Kids take on the dastardly Captain Hook and explore the incredible world of Neverland.

Starburns Picks Up Michael Jackson ‘Bubbles’ Script

Isaac Adamson’s script treatment of the touching story of a pop icon (Michael Jackson) and his pet chimp, Bubbles, has been snatched up by End Cue and Dan Harmon’s indie stop-motion Starburns Industries — the studio which brought us the genre-redefining, Oscar-nominated Anomalisa.

Bubbles topped the 2015 “Black List” of unproduced scripts in Hollywood, and is inspired by the real-life adventures of Michael Jackson’s simian companion, who accompanied the legendary peformer near constantly through the 1980s. To summarize the script: “A baby chimp is adopted by pop star Michael Jackson. Narrating his own story, Bubbles the Chimp details his life within The King of Pop’s inner circle through the scandals that later rocked Jackson’s life and eventually led to Bubbles’ release.”

Scribe Adamson and Lee Stobby will executive produce the stop-motion animation project, with Harmon and End Cue owner Andrew Kortschak serving as executive producers. CAA will handle distribution rights for the finished project.
