Blue Sky’s ‘Epic’ Opens Nationwide on Friday

Epic, the new animated adventure from director Chris Wedge and his gifted team at Blue Sky Studios, opens the door to a world inhabited by fantastic creatures hidden from plain sight.

Civilized man’s obsession with magical creatures that live in verdant, unexplored regions of nature has inspired numerous works of art, from Victorian novels and paintings to early 20th century trick photographs and modern pop culture figures as disparate as Tinker Bell and The Smurfs. In May, filmgoers around the world are invited to enjoy a completely new take on the miniature world hidden in our backyards in the 3-D, CG-animated offering from Oscar-winning director Chris Wedge called Epic. The visually stunning new Fox/Blue Sky feature centers on the battle between the good forces that try to keep this wonderful natural world alive and the evil forces of decay.

Speaking from his Blue Sky Studios offices in Greenwich, Connecticut, Wedge says he and Joyce had been talking about collaborating on a big action movie exploring this hidden world back when they were both working on the studio’s 2005 pic Robots.

“Bill Joyce and I were thinking about places to go in animation, and this notion kept coming up—to build a big action-adventure movie about these creatures that you almost see from the corners of your eyes, this natural environment that looks both familiar and alien at the same time.”

World-renowned author/illustrator Joyce, the Oscar-winning director of the 2012 short The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore and exec producer of features such as Meet the Robinsons, Robots and Rise of the Guardians, says he’d been obsessed with the subject after visiting an exhibit about Victorian fairy paintings at the Frick Collection museum in New York.

“I’d seen Peter Pan at Lincoln Center with my children and gone to that exhibit at the Frick,” recalls the Baton Rouge-based artist. “I had the catalog from the exhibit—and the paintings were incredible—you could see this ancient civilization of fairies in miniature form. That idea of these ancient creatures in the natural world really got Chris stoked.”

Wedge and Joyce threw some ideas around and eventually brought in screenwriter James Hart (Hook, Dracula, Muppet Treasure Island) to draft a feature that included these characters and this mystical world within an adventure framework.

“We all love the same things; Robin Hood movies, swash-bucklers, grand adventure movies,” Joyce points out. “I remember the three of us shared this wonderful summer evening at this tree-lined glade. Chris and Jim came over with some brandy, and there we were, three grown men, drinking brandy and surrounded by the brightest fireflies and beautiful trees in a moonlit glade in the Adirondacks. That was the backdrop for our movie.”

“Some places you can’t go any other way but animation,” explains Wedge. “We had been developing our technical abilities at Blue Sky, and we had the ability to create entire natural worlds in CG animation. I thought it would be fantastic to use stereoscopic technology to immerse audiences—visually, intellectually and emotionally—in this animated realm.”

After production was greenlit three years ago, Wedge and his team at Blue Sky got to work on fleshing out this meticulously crafted forest, where tiny seeds seem as huge as boulders and a butterfly is visualized as a flying tapestry of colors. The film’s storyline, which centers on a young human girl (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) who shrinks down to the size of the other creatures to help the Queen of the Forest realm (pop star Beyoncé Knowles) and her helpers find a precious “Podling” baby, went through many drafts until Wedge and his team finally landed a version that was exactly what they were looking for.

“The first thing that counts is that you have to deliver a story and movie experience that grabs them emotionally and satisfies them,” notes Wedge about his studio’s eighth theatrical feature outing. “This film plays on an emotional level that exceeds what we’ve achieved before. It feels more cinematic: It takes a crew of talented people to join in the vision and help execute it all together.”

    Everything Is Illuminated

Of course, CG animation and cinematic technology have come a long way since Wedge directed his inspiring short Bunny back in 1999. As co-founder and VP of creative development at Blue Sky Studios, he has overseen the growth and evolution of his studio and delivered global blockbusters such as the Ice Age series, Rio, Robots and Horton Hears A Who! Let’s not forget that he is also the voice of one of the most popular characters in animated movies of the past decade—the acorn-collecting saber-toothed squirrel from the Ice Age franchise.

On the technology side, Wedge says there weren’t any earth-shattering advances since the last Blue Sky movie, Rio. However, for this movie, the artistic innovations helped them apply a lot of time and care to elements that they would deliver in a different style.

    Epic

“One of the biggest skills is managing the creative process in a big movie like this,” he offers. “The development of the story, the application of the creative ideas, managing them through the production design team, the modelers, the animators, to help them contribute and do what they all do best. I’m simply awestruck by the ability of the people to accomplish so much work aimed at a singular goal.”

Those who love to dig into the development history of movies would love to know that at one point, the idea was floated to shoot Epic as a live-action/CG animation hybrid project. Wedge says they thought about shooting the Leaf Men as humans in samurai costumes.

“We wanted that kind of realism and aimed for audiences to buy these characters as humanlike as possible,” he explains. “If we pushed it too much, it would look alien, and too much of that CG realism would edge them towards the uncanny valley territory. The animators were challenged to animate within a certain range of emotions that wouldn’t break these characters.”

    Epic

Another interesting point is that the little guys were able to leap and move around just like crickets do.

“By virtue of their size, the Leaf Men can leap about 30 feet—gravity works differently on them,” says Wedge. “Character to character, we used different animation approaches. For example, one of our human characters, the father, Bomba (who is voiced by Jason Sudeikis), moves much more broadly than the Leaf Men. We based him on movie stars like Sterling Holloway and Danny Kaye as well as some of the figures in Norman Rockwell’s classic paintings.”

    Nowhere Near Scrat’s World

As the film’s supervising animator Galen Chu, who also worked on Blue Sky’s first three Ice Age movies, Robots and Rio, tells us…

    Epic
    Epic

“We have done a lot of cartoony animation in the past, and for this movie, one of our biggest challenges was pulling off naturalist motion and acting,” he says. “When we got the scene, we would brainstorm, get in the acting room and act out the scene to get our reference. We could see which one of our ideas read the best, and we had video footage that was really important for us. Chris always pointed the team to nature and invited them to draw from the real world, so that the performances were naturalistic and believable.”

One of Chu’s favorite scenes in the movie involves the heroine, Mary Katherine’s transformation.

“Part of the film’s conceit is that these characters in the forest are only two inches tall and the reason we can’t see them is because they move so fast. So when Mary Katherine has to return to her father’s house, she sees everything from a different perspective. Everything seems foreign to her because she has shrunk tremendously. She has to interact with her dad, who seems like a giant building in front of her. Then the housedog catches a whiff of the Leaf Men and chases them down, and they’re moving quickly like crickets. I think we succeeded in bringing together some very cool, unique ideas.”

Another element that returned Wedge to his childhood days was the film’s 3-D stereoscopic features.

“As a kid, I used to love to lay on my back and look through my View-Master for hours,” he says. “Perhaps that’s why I started making stop-motion animation. I loved the 3-Dness of it, and I was jealous of the way 2D animation moved. Now that we are able to bring 3-D to CG animation, it’s an entirely new composition tool. The lighting, framing and depth element totally transforms your camera composition and the way you experience a shot. I can’t explain all of it, but when you put the 3-D goggles on and look through the camera, the experience of the shot is completely different. We change the depth and focus points to adjust this world so that the audience gets a better immersive experience.”

Wedge, who is a huge fan of the original King Kong as well as classic Disney movies like Bambi and Pinocchio, says he always loved the way animation was able to take liberties and take audiences to places that weren’t necessarily just for children.

“People think animation is for children, but I’m not a child and I love it. As a child, I was mostly captivated by things that I didn’t quite understand. We make our movies incredibly child-friendly, but there are parts of the world where they explore subjects in animation that are quite mature. I always want to make movies that include everyone in the audience and offer material that challenges adults as well as children.”

Fox/Blue Sky’s Epic begins its run in U.S. theaters on May 24.

Nick Soars to Comedic Heights with ‘Sanjay and Craig’

Sanjay and Craig, Nickelodeon’s eccentric and hilarious new animated series, is exactly the kind of show we love to see on the kids cabler.

Forget about all those heart-warming tales of friendship between kids and their pet cats, dogs and ponies. This month, Nickelodeon is going to break the mold with an inventive new toon about a young boy named Sanjay and his talking pet snake Craig, who is also a master of disguise. Created by Jim Dirschberger, Jay Howell (Bob’s Burgers) and Andreas Trolf and exec produced by comedy veterans Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi (The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Bravest Warriors), the show should be a welcome addition to the kids cable outlet, which hasn’t offered a new 2D comedy for a while.

Adding even more star appeal to the project are the voice actors Maulik Pancholy (30 Rock), who portrays Sanjay, and Chris Hardwick (The Nerdist), who provides the voice of Craig. The supporting cast—Kunal Nayyar, Tony Hale, Linda Cardellini, Matt Jones and Grey DeLisle—offer even more icing on the cake, or bright, shiny scales on the snake skin if you have to push the analogy too far.

It all started four years ago when Howell, Dirschberger and Trolf pitched their idea for the show to Nickelodeon. Howell had created the property as a comic book back when he lived in San Francisco, but in the original version, Sanjay was an older, chubby snake-charmer! Obviously, he became a younger kid with an interesting personality when the show was prepped for Nickelodeon.

As Trolf explains, “The spirit of the friendship between Sanjay and Craig never changed in the process. Their goals and aspirations became more defined. Our 12-year-old character also became more defined. But everything really came together when we heard the actors read the lines. That went a long way in helping us figure out who they were.”

Dirschberger says you can really get a feel for the evolution of the characters in a promo that Nick put together for the show.

“They put together some of the concept art and the original ‘zine that Jay had drawn, and it was really amazing to see the progression of Sanjay as this weird, fat older guy into our show’s hero who is fully alive and polished and different. Yet the cartoon really retains the playfulness of Jay’s art in the end.”

    Sanjay and Craig
    Sanjay and Craig

The trio was thrilled to team up with veterans like McRobb and Viscardi on their first show at Nick.

“Their aesthetic and humor has been hugely influential,” says Howell. “Their Adventures of Pete and Pete was such an iconic series in the ’90s. To get to work with them has been really a great experience.”

“The process at the studio is very collaborative, and everyone has equal input,” adds Trolf. As it turns out, each one of them ended up tackling the aspect of the project they had envisioned during the original pitch. Trolf punches up the dialog, Howell oversees art direction and Dirschberger is in charge of technical execution and post. “We’re doing the same thing as before, but in a real professional environment, with an excellent team.”

    Sanjay and Craig

    Hearting the Old-School Style

While the show’s production team is based at Nick’s Burbank studio, the 2D animation is handled by Seoul, South Korea-based Saerom Animation, which also provides service work for Cartoon Network’s hits Adventure Time and Regular Show. Howell says he likes the hand-drawn quality of the show.

“We are definitely not a franchise, we are hand-drawn, homemade and traditional, with digital and 3D elements added to sweeten the effects…We wanted our show to have the same feel as the shows we used to watch on Nickelodeon in the ’90s.”

Dirschberger believes that it’s difficult to see the thumbprint of the creators in a 100 percent CG-animated TV show.

    Sanjay and Craig
    Sanjay and Craig

“Nick was looking for something that was completely creative-driven. You can’t see the thumbprints of the creative in a slick 3D show. It’s all about the integrity of the original artwork. We are handmade guys and love the throwback to the golden era of Nick animation.”

When asked to name the toons that influenced their style and vision, the guys are pretty unanimous in mentioning iconic fare such as Hanna-Barbera toons, The Simpsons, Ren & Stimpy and Nick faves such as Rocko’s Modern Life, Rugrats and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters. They also bring up Adult Swim fare such as Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Space Ghost and Venture Bros.

“One of the shows that clearly informed our aesthetic was The Simpsons,” says Dirschberger. “Just think generations of kids have never seen a world without The Simpsons. That show really provided us with a template for humor that we can all fall back on.”

    Sanjay and Craig
    Sanjay and Craig

The show’s visuals are also a direct descendent of Hanna-Barbera and 1980s toons.

Howell notes, “We wanted the show to be colorful, interesting and intense, even if you couldn’t hear the sounds. It’s pretty simple, but it’s also very complicated.” As Dirschberger chimes in, “Other shows tend to be more practical. They’ll be happy just to put the characters just standing out in a field. We’ve never been happy to do things simply. Every shot goes over and beyond what you usually expect in a show like this.”

It’s also interesting to note how the training and experience of the Sanjay and Craig team is serving them perfectly on the show. Dirschberger, a graduate of the Academy of Art in San Francisco, built a strong foundation with Howell on various projects before this experience.

    Sanjay and Craig
    Sanjay and Craig

“Back in 2006, I didn’t think it was possible to do our own animated projects,” says Howell. “As a cartoonist and illustrator, I learned more about animation, and all three of us did work on music videos and produced our own short films before the series.”

Trolf studied fiction writing and literature at New York University and also found himself gravitating to animation.

“Animation was something that I always loved and this project was a natural fit. I feel very lucky that each one of us was able to bring our specific area of expertise to the project.”

    Sanjay and Craig
    Sanjay and Craig

The trio is excited about the prospect of Nick viewers getting to meet some of this summer’s most entertaining characters on their show.

“It’s great to see all of the show’s elements coming together after months of hard work,” says Dirschberger. “Everyone who contributed to the show has helped us create something that is raw and very honest. And visually too, it has exceeded our expectations.”

Trolf says what he loves about them show is seeing how the various characters are interacting with each other.

    Sanjay and Craig
    Sanjay and Craig

“We kept everything pretty close to our chests,” says the writer. “And now when we see the final versions of each episode, we’re blown away by how it truly conveys our original intents with honesty.”

Of course, we couldn’t let them go without asking them for some final words of advice for their fellow animation professionals.

Hirschberger says, “Remember that everything takes longer…and always trust your guts. Follow your instincts and try to stay true to the message of your show. Remember what you’re trying to say with your project.”

    Sanjay and Craig
    Sanjay and Craig

“I think what makes the show stand out is that it goes beyond being funny,” Trolf concludes. “It’s couched in humor, irreverence and absurdity, but the underlying message is the importance of being in awe and loving the world around you, and finding your place within that world.”

Come on, now. Isn’t that a message every kid and reptile can take to heart?

Sanjay and Craig premieres Saturday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. on Nickelodeon.

  • John Knoll Upped to ILM’s Chief Creative Officer

Oscar-winning vfx veteran John Knoll has been promoted to Chief Creative Officer at Industrial Light & Magic. Knoll, who joined ILM In 1986, has been a vfx supervisor for the house since 1991. He will serve alongside ILM president, Lynwen Brennan.

“In John I see a keen eye and an incredible mind for creative problem solving and that’s what visual effects are all about,” said Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy. “Lynwen continues to successfully navigate the business through these challenging times and I’m confident that with her business acumen and John’s experience and passion for combining creative art with technology, the company will continue to perform at the highest levels.”

“I am thrilled that Lynwen asked me to take on this new role,” explained Knoll, “I am fortunate to work at a company as stable as ILM where we can focus our energy on the creative and continue to be able to bring together the right mix of talent and technology to keep ILM on the cutting edge.”

Well known for co-creating Photoshop with his brother Thomas, Knoll has been a driving force of innovation at ILM for years. In 1996 Knoll founded the Rebel (Mac) Unit at ILM; a creative incubator for fine artists and software developers to define working methodologies and advance the state of the art. This lead to the development of a variety of breakthrough techniques including some of the earliest examples of digital compositing for The Abyss, a tool to recreate optical lens flares in the digital realm first used on Hook and a host of advanced digital camera projection techniques used on such films as Mission: Impossible, Star Trek: First Contact and Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace.

Knoll was also a key contributor to the development of ILM’s cutting-edge on set performance capture technology, Imocap, which saw its first use on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and has been used on 12 films. In 2012 Knoll was elected to the Academy’s Board of Governors representing the visual effects branch and is a four-time Academy Award nominee. In 2007 he won both the Oscar and the BAFTA for Best Visual Effects for his work on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

In an interview with Variety, Knoll said…

“Folks tend to get very busy on their own shows,” said Knoll, “and don’t have time to periodically share with everybody else what they’re working on. ‘Have you thought about that?’ We have this wealth of talent that if we’re smart we leverage on all projects. We have well-established supervisors here that certainly don’t need me to interfere with their projects. Michael Bay comes because he wants to work with Scott Farrar. J.J. (Abrams) comes to ILM because he has a great relationship with Roger Guyett. These things are already working and I don’t need to interfere. (My role) is just to help from a facilities standpoint to make sure they get the resources they need, and to troubleshoot problems.”

Knoll is currently wrapping up work as vfx supervisor on Guillermo del Toro’s science fiction epic, Pacific Rim, which opens on July 12.

PGS Sells Method/DQE’s ‘Robin Hood’ to Key Broadcasters

Global distributor and brand management company PGS has announced the sale of Method Animation and DQ Entertainment’s new CG-animated series Robin Hood: Mischief in Sherwood, to Tele-Quebec in Quebec, VRT in Belgium, Canal Panda in Portugal, RTVE in Spain and MTV3 in Finland. The 52 X 11 series was commissioned by TF1 (France), De Agostini (Italy) and ZDF (Germany).

Robin Hood: Mischief in Sherwood serves up a fun twist on the legendary story of the beloved bandit and his accomplices that is re-booted just for kids aged 6 to 10. Created by Romain Van Liemt and Alexandre de la Patellière  and directed by Sandra Derval, the series begins when King Richard’s spoiled brother named Prince John comes to Nottingham for the first time. Keen to impose his newly bestowed powers on his subjects, he finds a mocking critic in young Robin Hood. Warner Bros. Offers ‘Pacific Rim’ Sneak Peek

Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming sci-fi action adventure Pacific Rim has generated a huge amount of interest in the fantasy fan community. The upcoming Warner Bros. picture is penned by del Toro and Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans) and stars Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel), Idris Elba (Luther), Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses), Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy), Diego Klattenhoff (Homeland), Burn Gorman (Torchwood) and Robert Kazinsky (EastEnders). The plot centers on a massive alien attack, which leads to humans deploying giant robots to fight off the menace.

“I think the stars are the robots and the monsters, but everybody that we’re casting is a star in my book,” del Toro told Empire Online. “They’re all actors I want to work with. They’re the most solid group of actors I can gather, and I think they will be stars! We’re very much continuing what I always like, which is monsters! But the robots were a joy to design too, and we designed them really fast. They’re seriously beautiful. I came to the movie after I read a four-page synopsis, and from that point on I started developing it from scratch, and working on the screenplay with Travis Beacham. I co-wrote the storyline and I’ve written several drafts on my own, and I’ll bounce it back to Travis when it’s prudent. I’m as immersed in this movie as I’ve always been.”

A new featurette released by Warner Bros. this week details how the film’s giant robots—the Jaegers—are driven by a two-pilot system that connects man and machines via a neurological bridge. Here’s a look:

  • Disney Releases Info on ‘Monsters University’s’ Music

Disney/Pixar’s upcoming Monsters University will feature music from award-winning composer Randy Newman and Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia. The soundtrack also features the sounds of Atlanta-based hard rock band Mastodon. Directed by Dan Scanlon and produced by Kori Rae, Monsters University hits theaters June 21, 2013, with the short film The Blue Umbrella, which features music by composer Jon Brion and vocals by Sarah Jaffe.

“We wanted to capture the college feel in Monsters University,” said Scanlon, “and music is a big part of that. The score and the inclusion of other great musicians like Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso [of Swedish House Mafia] and Mastodon help us convey a fun, freewheeling college atmosphere.”

Oscar-winning composer/songwriter Randy Newman is back, marking his seventh Disney/Pixar film. The 20-time Oscar nominee’s wins include “If I Didn’t Have You” for Monsters, Inc. and “We Belong Together” for Toy Story 3. The recently inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member created a full Alma Mater titled “Monsters University,” establishing a recurring collegiate theme.

“We recruited the team at Pixar Canada to record the Alma Mater,” said Scanlon. “We needed a giant crowd of crazy monster students to be singing it and the Canada team was great for this—the end result is sort of perfectly ‘off.’ Actually, the first time we recorded it, it was really good. I had to say, ‘Guys, these are college students at a sporting event, let’s mess it up a little bit.’”

Newman added a unique flair to his score, calling on renowned international drum corps The Blue Devils to contribute a definitively collegiate sound. The composer also incorporated concert band music to exemplify the feeling of being in school.

In fact, said Newman, “There’s a little bit of Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture when Mike is riding the pig. I like to think Brahms would be extremely flattered by his inclusion in the score.”

The score—recorded with a 112-piece orchestra—features a few character themes, including an accordion tune to help illustrate the less-than-cool status of the Oozma Kappa fraternity; a laidback shuffle to introduce Sulley; and the aspiring Scare student Mike Wazowski is often accompanied by a clarinet that, Newman notes, changes as Mike’s character arc evolves.

When Mike and Sulley find themselves in the midst of a fraternity party, filmmakers wanted to showcase their monster moves—but first they needed the music. Enter Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia with a party song called “Roar”—of course—featuring an upbeat electronic dance sound that even monsters could appreciate.

“We wanted to keep it funny, funky and at the same time a bit cool with a hint of monsters in it,” said Axwell.

    Scanlon approved.

“It’s really a fun song. I remember watching the animator work on this scene. As he played back the song, the artist at the next desk—who wasn’t even working on the movie—couldn’t help moving his feet. Obviously, that guy had been hearing that song for days, but yet the second he heard it, he just had to move his feet.”

Faced with the question of what a sweet monster might listen to during a free moment, filmmakers decided to push the envelope.

“There is a great moment in ‘Monsters University’ when we thought it would be funny if the tunes were some of the most intense heavy metal imaginable. Mastodon was the obvious choice. They show off an unexpected monstrous side for one of our great new characters.”

They chose an existing song from the group called “Island.”

Opening in theaters in front of “Monsters University” is Disney/Pixar’s short film The Blue Umbrella. Directed by Saschka Unseld and produced by Marc Greenberg, the short features a score by composer Jon Brion, with vocals by singer/songwriter Sarah Jaffe (“The Body Wins,” “Suburban Nature”).

The director was listening to Jaffe’s music when he began work on the short.

“There’s such an intimacy to her sound that touches you right at the core,” Unseld said. “I always thought hers would be the perfect voice to make people care deeply about a love story between two umbrellas.”

Brion, whose credits include Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Punch Drunk Love,” created a score that sublimely supports the wide-ranging emotional undertones of the short.

“You can see how Saschka sees things,” said Jaffe. “Everything has this life of its own. Objects in our everyday life are characters too. It’s really beautiful.”

The Monsters University soundtrack, set for release from Walt Disney Records on June 18, 2013, is available for pre-order at www.smarturl.it/musAmazona1. On June 4, the label will release the “Roar” digital single, plus remixes by Style of Eye and Yogi. The album’s track listing follows:

  • Blue Sky’s ‘Epic’ Getting Positive Early Reviews

Blue Sky’s ‘Epic’ Getting Positive Early Reviews

The Hollywood trades have weighed in on Blue Sky’s new 3-D CG-animated feature Epic and the reviews are mostly positive. The fantasy adventure film, which is directed by Blue Sky co-founder Chris Wedge (Ice Age, Robots) is set in a hidden land deep in the forest where the battle between the forces of good and evil continues under our noses. The voice cast includes Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Christoph Waltz, Aziz Ansari, Colin Farrell, Pitbull, Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler, Blake Anderson, Judah Friedlander and Beyoncé Knowles. The lushly animated pic will open on 3D this Friday (May 24).

Here is a sampling of what early critics are saying about Blue Sky’s eighth animated feature film:

Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter writes…

“While it might not amount to epic animated filmmaking in terms of scope and invention, Epic nevertheless makes for pleasantly engaging viewing…Occupying the director’s chair for the first time since 2005’s Robots, Chris Wedge keeps the pace brisk and involving, especially during those lively battle sequences…Where the animated film comes up short is on the inspiration front—despite the intriguing terrain, its stock inhabitants lack the sort of unique personality traits that would prevent them from feeling overly familiar.”

In his review in Variety, Andrew Barker opines…

Epic is a reasonably entertaining, adeptly crafted kidpic whose biggest crime is its near pathological reliance on overfamiliar tropes and trappings. But that shouldn’t bother family crowds, who will likely line up in large numbers and leave satisfied, if hardly awed… Almost everything that conventional wisdom would suggest a successful multi-quadrant family pic ought to contain is present here in some capacity, from the overstocked celebrity voice cast to 3D bells and whistles, a gently apolitical eco-friendly message, an offscreen parent death and some Timon-and-Pumba style sidekicks. The film also hews to a premise — tiny people living a clandestine existence under the noses of full-sized humans — that has been similarly employed by The Secret World of Arrietty, Arthur and the Invisibles and The Borrowers over the past several years….But if this is all familiar territory even to film-literate young children, it’s nonetheless executed with professionalism and a few dashes of panache.”

“Animation quality is generally quite high, with fur and water excellently rendered, though Wedge has a tendency to stage certain showpiece sequences with the camera pointed directly into a shaft of sunlight, enveloping everything in a fulgent sheen that looks particularly distracting through 3D glasses. Yet on the whole, this is a fully realized world, providing a more ecologically accurate view of the forest than one usually sees on film, full of just as many mold-spores and wriggling things as fauns and flowers.”

Anna Smith of Empire Magazine wraps it up best…

“While it’s not a crossover classic, [Epic] has enough wit and charm to entertain both big and little people.”

  • Spielberg to Produce Microsoft’s ‘Halo’ Series

Steven Spielberg will exec produce a live-action TV series based on the popular video game franchise Halo for Microsoft’s new console Xbox One. The series will include exclusive interactive Xbox One content that is created in partnership with 343 Industries and Xbox Entertainment Studios, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Halo was first introduced by Bungie back in 2001. The first-person shooter game centers on an interstellar war between humanity and a theocratic alliance of aliens known as the Covenant. Many of the titles center on the adventures of Master Chief John-117, a cybernetically enhanced human super-soldier and his artificial intelligence companion, Cortana.

In the past, there had been rumors of a feature adaptation of the franchise by Columbia Pictures, based on a script penned by Alex Garland, to be directed by Neill Blomkamp. The property also inspired an anime series titled Halo Legends, which was created by Bones, Casio, Production I.G., Studio 4°C, and Toei Animation, overseen by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed, Appleseed Ex Machina).

As he adds Halo to his slate, Spielberg continues to be one of the busiest creatives working in Hollywood today. He is also exec producing Falling Skies, Jurassic Park IV, the untitled Transformers Sequel and the 2013 Adventures of Tintin sequel Prisoners of the Sun, to name a few of his upcoming projects. • Academy Makes Animation Category Rule Change

Academy Makes Animation Category Rule Change

The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has made a new rule regarding the Animated Feature Oscar category. This new rule designates a maximum of two award recipients, one of whom must have a producer credit. The director and/or key creative individual shall continue to be a recipient, and in the circumstance of a two-person team with shared and equal director credit, a third statuette may be awarded.

Previously announced rules changes for the 86th Academy Awards include allowing members to see the nominated documentary shorts and foreign language films either at a theatrical screening or on DVD. Prior to the final round of voting, the Academy will provide members with DVDs of the nominated films in five categories: Foreign Language Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Animated Short Film, and Live Action Short Film.

Other adjustments to the rules include standard date and other routine changes.

Rules are reviewed annually by individual branch and category committees. The Awards Rules Committee then evaluates all proposed changes before presenting its recommendations to the Academy’s Board of Governors for approval.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and televised live on the ABC Television Network.

In related news, Seth MacFarlane also tweeted today that he won’t be back to host the Oscars in 2014.

“Traumatized critics exhale: I’m unable to do the Oscars again,” he tweeted. “Tried to make it work schedule-wise, but I need sleep. However, I highly recommend the job, as Zadan and Meron are two of the most talented producers in the business. My suggestion for host is Joaquin Phoenix.”

  • Gaumont Plans a 50th Anniversary Bash for Calimero

Gaumont Plans a 50th Anniversary Bash for Calimero

Gaumont Animation (formerly Alphanim), is hosting a big bash to promote its upcoming CG-animated series Calimero on June 12 at the opening night of the the Annecy International Animation Festival. The new 104 x 11 series is produced by Gaumont with the property owner Calidra and Italy’s Studio Campedelli. The event will also celebrate the popular property’s 50th Anniversary.

Broadcasters who have already signed on board from the start of this new production are France’s TF1, RAI Fiction, Disney Junior and Tele Quebec.

As part of the festival, artists from different art movements or disciplines (i.e. graffiti artists, animators) will be invited to paint on replicas of the famous Calimero eggshell while bringing their own interpretation to this iconic character. After the festival, these “work of art” eggshells will be exhibited in a Parisian gallery and in the main capitals around the world where the show will be broadcast. The eggshell paintings will then be auctioned to raise money for Les Toiles Enchantées, an association represented by French actor and director Alain Chabat, that offers disabled or hospitalized children and teens the possibility to watch the latest movies for free directly in their hospital. The association was helped in the past by names such as Tim Burton, Daft Punk, Paul Auster, Vanessa Paradis, Céline Dion, and Jodie Foster.

“We are thrilled to hosting Calimero’s 50th Anniversary party during Annecy and MIFA,” says Pierre Belaisch, managing director of Gaumont Animation. “Audiences around the world have been following the adventures of Calimero for over four decades, and now with our new CGI series which delivery will start in September of this year, we will be introducing a whole new generation of fans to this loveable character with new stories, new environments and new inspirations.” Added Belaisch, “Generosity and collaboration are key characteristics of Calimero’s personality, and what better place than MIFA and Les Toiles Enchantées to celebrate this iconic character in the presence of artists and fans.”

Created in 1963 by Nino Pagot, Toni Pagot and Ignazio Colnaghi, Calimero is a hapless black chicken who wears his half eggshell on his head, The property became an international hit with 290 episodes of animation aired in over 80 countries. Celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, Gaumont Animation’s all-new animated CGI series will bring this iconic character to an entire new audience of children. Gaumont Animation distributes the program and manages the brand internationally on behalf of Calidra, the right owner.
