WIA Sets 2021 Women in Animation World Summit Plans for Annecy

Women in Animation (WIA) announces the program for the fifth Women in Animation World Summit, in conjunction with this year’s hybrid version of the Annecy International Animation Festival and Mifa 2021. The theme of this year’s virtual Summit is “The Business Case for Diversity.”

The Women in Animation World Summit will be viewable exclusively as part of the festival’s virtual programming and for WIA members from Monday, June 14 at 12 a.m. PST / 9 a.m. CET through Saturday, June 19. As of June 20, the Summit will be available to the general public via the WIA website and YouTube Channel.

“At the last four Summits, WIA built shared vocabulary around diversity, inclusion, belonging and equity. As a global community, the organization traversed monumental paradigm shifts, challenges and opportunities this past year including racial equity, a global pandemic, a rise in discriminatory violence and strong headwind toward inclusivity,” said WIA President, Marge Dean. “As WIA marks its fifth Summit at Annecy, it’s important to ensure that our global WIA community continue to learn from each other and share not only the business imperative for DEI, but also the successes and failures we’ve all had in trying to move forward.”

Commenting on the theme, WIA Secretary/DEI Chair Julie Ann Crommett added, “The business case is not just that diversity, equity and inclusion are good for business empirically (they are), but that we each as businesses and individuals have a part to play in making change. Many companies, organizations and industries have committed to doing better — seizing the case for DEI. We get further faster by being more transparent with each other, more transparent as an industry and truly building a global community of practice and thought leadership. Our hope is this Summit begins to model what transparency and action can and should be in our industry.”

WIA Vice President Jinko Gotoh said, “We must democratize animation on all fronts: education, art, technology, and industry. I’m proud of the work WIA continues to do. We advocate sustainable change across the globe. Along those lines, we are thrilled to partner with Triggerfish to present this year’s Summit, as they have been doing such tremendous work over the years to diversify storytelling and bring better representation to the African animation industry.”

“We’re honored to be partnering with WIA on this important summit. Triggerfish has a vision for a world where stories are told and created by the people the stories belong to, and WIA’s work in gender inclusivity and diversity takes huge steps towards that goal, particularly as it applies to the continent of Africa,” said Stuart Forrest, CEO, Triggerfish.

Mickaël Marin, CEO of CITIA, said on behalf of the Annecy International Animation Festival, “We are so proud to once again host the Women in Animation World Summit as part of our festival. WIA’s dedication to presenting enlightening conversations surrounding diversity and inclusion really inspire us year after year.”

  • The New Rugrats Are Here!

    The New Rugrats Are Here!

***This article originally appeared in the June-July ’21 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 311)***

That sound you’ve been hearing is the collective cheers of the children of the 1990s who are celebrating the return of Tommy, Chuckie, Susie, Angelica and the rest of the Rugrats clan to the small screen. The folks at Nickelodeon and Paramount+ unleashed the reboot of the hugely popular Rugrats series this Thursday, May 27, in hopes of introducing the franchise to a new generation of fans.

The show, which originally debuted in the summer of 1991, was created by Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó (of the famous Klasky Csupo studio) and Paul Germain (Recess, Lloyd in Space). Thirty years later, the iconic babies and their families’ adventures are CG-animated and they have to deal with social media and all the trappings of life in the 2020s!

The 2021 show voice cast includes E.G. Daily (Tommy), Nancy Cartwright (Chuckie), Kath Soucie (Phil and Lil DeVille), Cheryl Chase (Angelica), Cree Summer (Susie), Tommy Dewey (Stu), Ashley Rae Spillers (Didi), Anna Chlumsky (Charlotte), Timothy Simons (Drew), Natalie Morales (Betty), Tony Hale (Chas), Michael McKean (Lou), Nicole Byer (Lucy) and Omar Benson Miller (Randy). (Check out a snippet from recently debuted The Stars of Rugrats Special here.)

For Rugrats exec producers Eryk Casemiro and Kate Boutilier, who also worked on the original version three decades ago, the series has been a sweet homecoming. “Writing dialogue for characters that we wrote for some 25 odd years ago felt like getting a hug from an old friend,” says Casemiro, who is also Nickelodeon’s senior VP of preschool programming. “To have the original voices who played the babies come back to play them again was incredibly heartwarming for us.”

“It was truly goose-bump inducing to see and hear Tommy Pickles again,” adds Boutilier, whose many credits also include The Wild Thornberrys, As Told by Ginger, The Mr. Men Show, Olivia and Poppy Cat. “We know the fan base is super strong, and like them, we all have indelible memories of the show and these characters. We hope they like the new series, too.”

    The Rugrats
    The Rugrats

    Just Like Old Times

Casemiro and Boutilier began working on the reboot in early 2019. “We actually met on the show back in the day and we’ve had a long career together,” reminisces Casemiro (Duckman, Rocket Power, As Told by Ginger, Rugrats: All Grown Up!, The Wild Thornberrys). “When we started planning the show, we didn’t even know it was going to be a CG iteration. It was simply exciting for us to be able to have these characters to play with again.”

Casemiro points out that the show’s original creators were also on board to offer their input and suggestions. “Arlene and Gábor were the architects behind the series, and we had their input along the way. They gave us a little bit of oxygen, too, to take our own spin on the characters and to re-imagine them for a new era.”

The show’s beloved characters were updated to fit the needs and social framework of audiences in 2021. “Because the original is nearly 30 years old, some of the social satire that worked back then doesn’t feel right today,” explains Casemiro. “For example, in the old show Charlotte Pickles was portrayed as this female executive who was always on this bulky, brick-sized cell-phone, and that needed adjusting. Grandpa Lou is now a veteran of Woodstock instead of World War II. We also revisited the relationships between the adults and made connections that weren’t clear in the original.”

Boutilier says the show creators knew that modern-day millennials who grew up with the show would be in their 30s. “We did the math of how old the new parents would be,” she notes. “We also changed what their friendships would be like. Everything had to be plunked in today’s world.”

    The Rugrats
    The Rugrats

    Keeping Up with the Times

There were a few course corrections, too. They made the Susie character slightly younger so that she could no longer talk to adults and spoil Angelica’s plots. That gave the writers more freedom with the plot developments and kept Susie part of the core group of babies.

“We had a lot of fun weaving in new technologies into the show as well,” says Boutilier. “We had to imagine how babies react to a smart speaker or respond to a tablet when their grandparents show up on a video call.”

There’s also more diversity in the cast of characters. The Betty character (Phil and Lil’s mother) is now a Latina and is part of the Carmichaels’ main group of friends. Charlotte’s exec assistant Jonathan is now a Latinx character who plays a much bigger role in the show. Grandpa Lou also has a wider, more diverse group of friends that he interacts with throughout the series.

L-R: Grandpa Lou (voiced by Michael McKean), Betty DeVille (Natalie Morales) and Lucy Carmichael (Nicole Byer)
L-R: Grandpa Lou (voiced by Michael McKean), Betty DeVille (Natalie Morales) and Lucy Carmichael (Nicole Byer)

The series’ transition from 2D to CG animation had its own share of trials and challenges. According to the exec producers, it wasn’t easy to translate the wacky, distinctive “ugly cute” character design and animation to the more rigid CG universe. “The translation was quite tricky because one move to the left, and the show would be too cute,” notes Casemiro. “We didn’t want to just interpret the show in CG. We had to deliberately measure the original designs and made sure we had the right version in CG. Arlene and Gábor went back to the archives and looked at the original character designs to get all the details — which included the asymmetry of the eye sockets — just right. ”

The producers point out that they incorporated a very deliberate art direction so that everything, from the giant heads to the little pieces of food stuck in the carpet, feel perfect in this new CG Rugrats world. “Everything is still lumpy, but things are in CG,” adds Boutilier. “The color palette is still unusual, and the sets, the props, the colors of the sky, everything retains that special feeling — they’re fresh and updated in CG, but they feel familiar at the same time.”

Lighting also plays an important part in this new world. As Casemiro explains, “CG opened up a lot of possibilities in the lighting area. Our exec producer Casey Leonard (Breadwinners) and the directors helped create this new lighting schematic where the kids’ world is more shadowy because they’re closer to the ground, while the adults are lit differently because they’re higher up. This creates a special mood that is very different from other shows.”

    The Rugrats
    The Rugrats

Boutilier also explains that the lighting and CG animation also pushed the fantasy segments to a higher level. “You can really step inside the kids’ fantasies when they’re in the background, whether they’re inside a glowing cave of treasures or traveling in space,” she notes. “Between the lighting and the set designs, we think these set pieces are pretty vivid and spectacular.”

About 50 people worked on the first season (26 x half-hour) of the new show. “We have a small group of writers created for ideation in-house and used a pool of about 18 freelancers, some of which were original Rugrats writers, as well as some that were fans of the original show,” says Casemiro. “We were able to use a diverse writing pool. The front end of the animation was produced at Nickelodeon in Burbank. A lot of the original asset designs were done in house, and Technicolor and Xentrix in India helped out with the rest of the animation production. It takes us about 18 months to produce an episode from start to finish.”

    The Rugrats
    The Rugrats

Now that they are ready to release their new baby into the streaming wild (the show premieres on Paramount+ and airs on Nickelodeon later), the two talented showrunners are hoping that fans will embrace the new take on their beloved characters. “I hope it does what the original did,” says Boutilier. “It’s a co-viewing show, so we hope that adults love the grown-up characters and kids love the core friendship of the babies. Older kids like how much the babies get away with and the funny way they speak. We hope the show crosses overboard and entertains different audiences.”

Casemiro adds, “When the show first came out, it was very novel to see the world through babies’ eyes. Every one of those characters was an archetype that audiences could relate to. Angelica was the big sister at home, Tommy was a hero, Chuckie was the scared one … This was one of the first shows about the original modern family, with everyone interacting and the kids being each other’s best friends.”

“The whole setup was that these characters were babies, but they were pondering life’s big questions, just like a kid who was watching the show might be wondering about the same things,” adds Boutilier. “We hope to continue that tradition.”

The Rugrats premieres on Paramount+ on May 27. The show will also air on Nickelodeon later this year.

  • DreamWorks’ ‘The Boss Baby: Family Business’ Gets Day-and-Date Peacock Premiere

DreamWorks’ ‘The Boss Baby: Family Business’ Gets Day-and-Date Peacock Premiere

Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) and Peacock today announced DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby: Family Business, the sequel to the Oscar-nominated blockbuster comedy that earned more than $500 million worldwide, will debut as Peacock’s summer movie event for no additional charge to Peacock Premium customers in the U.S. beginning July 2, day-and-date with its theatrical release.

The Boss Baby: Family Business moves from its previously announced September 17, 2021 North American theatrical release date to become the perfect all-audience animated offering over the July Fourth weekend to provide ideal viewing options for both families who are ready to return to theaters or for those who want to watch, and re-watch, at home. The new adventure will begin its international theatrical rollout in select markets with the North American release on July 2.

“Families are at the heart of our decision today to make DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby: Family Business available to everyone this July Fourth weekend, and to give those families the freedom to choose whether to see this joyful, hilarious and heartfelt film from a big-screen theater seat or from the comfort of their own homes on Peacock,” said Jim Orr, President Domestic Distribution, Universal Pictures.

“Our Peacock subscribers love movies, so we are thrilled to be expanding our relationship with UFEG and to offer Peacock customers this premium content from one of the industry’s most beloved animation brands,” said Matt Strauss, Chairman, Direct-to-Consumer and International, NBCUniversal. “DreamWorks Animation films, from Trolls World Tour to Shrek and beyond, are among Peacock’s top performing titles to date, and we’re certain that The Boss Baby: Family Business is sure to become this summer’s ultimate streaming event.”

Over the past year, animated films have thrived both in theaters and on streaming platforms. Last April, in the early days of the pandemic, DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour became available for digital rental at home and went on to become the highest-grossing new-release digital title of all time. DreamWorks’ The Croods: A New Age was released both in theaters and in-home during the 2020 holiday season and was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the year’s highest-grossing movies.

Since April 2020, more than 42 million customers have signed up for Peacock, which currently features films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features and DreamWorks Animation as well as from other Hollywood studios. These films complement a massive entertainment library of live and on-demand TV shows, sports, news and Spanish-language programming from across NBCUniversal and beyond.

    The Boss Baby: Family Business
    The Boss Baby: Family Business

The Boss Baby: Family Business Synopsis: The Templeton brothers — Tim (voiced by James Marsden, X-Men franchise) and his Boss Baby little bro Ted (Alec Baldwin) — have become adults and drifted away from each other. Tim is now a married stay-at-home dad. Ted is a hedge fund CEO. But a new boss baby with a cutting-edge approach and a can-do attitude is about to bring them together again … and inspire a new family business.

Tim and his wife, Carol (Eva Longoria), the breadwinner of the family, live in the suburbs with their super-smart seven-year-old daughter Tabitha (Ariana Greenblatt, Avengers: Infinity War) and adorable new infant Tina (Amy Sedaris, BoJack Horseman). Tabitha, who’s at the top of her class at the prestigious Acorn Center for Advanced Childhood, idolizes her uncle Ted and wants to become like him, but Tim, still in touch with his overactive youthful imagination, worries that she’s working too hard and is missing out on a normal childhood.

When baby Tina reveals that she’s — ta-da! — a top secret agent for BabyCorp on a mission to uncover the dark secrets behind Tabitha’s school and its mysterious founder, Dr. Erwin Armstrong (Jeff Goldblum), it will reunite the Templeton brothers in unexpected ways, lead them to re-evaluate the meaning of family and discover what truly matters.

Family Business is directed by returning filmmaker Tom McGrath and is produced by Jeff Hermann (Kung Fu Panda 3). Lisa Kudrow and Jimmy Kimmel also reprise their roles as Ted and Tim’s parents.

  • Amazon Reportedly Close to Buying MGM Studio

Amazon Reportedly Close to Buying MGM Studio

Amazon is closing in on a deal to purchase the nearly 100-year-old studio MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer), according to Wall Street Journal sources. The deal to take on MGM Holdings for almost $9 billion would mark the tech giant’s second-largest acquisition after gobbling up Whole Foods in 2017 for $13.7B. The two companies have been in talks for the deal on and off since the beginning of 2021.

MGM is known for Hollywood classics from Singin’ in the Rain to Rocky, as well as being co-owner of the James Bond franchise. Briefly operating its own animation division in the 1990s, the studio is also home to toon properties The Pink Panther, All Dogs Go to Heaven, The Secret of NIMH and The Lionhearts. The company operates a TV studio which has delivered hit shows like The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu) and Fargo (FX). MGM also owns the Epix channel.

The privately traded entertainment co. was valued around $5.5B (including debt) in December 2020. MGM’s stock has soared since chatter about the sale to Amazon picked up recently, from $105 per share in mid-May to ~$140 per share Monday morning.

Operating its Prime Video service and producing its own content, Amazon has also been splashing out to pick up theatrical feature films, including picking up Paramount’s upcoming military sci-fi actioner The Tomorrow War and vying for a deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment, which ultimately went to Netflix. This latest tactic in the streaming wars comes shortly after AT&T announced it would spin off WarnerMedia into a merger with Discovery, which will likely see HBO Max and Discovery+ meld into a larger platform show of force.

  • Future Perfect Kickstarts Pride with Queer Youth Shorts Series ‘How Life Is’

Future Perfect Kickstarts Pride with Queer Youth Shorts Series ‘How Life Is’

The Future Perfect Project, a national arts initiative, has announced the multi-media project How Life Is: Queer Youth Animated, a special 10-episode short film series to celebrate Pride Month 2021. The films cover the challenges that LGBTQIA+ youth, ages 13-22, navigate such as coming out, blended families, relationships, peer acceptance, homophobia, parity and more.

The first two episodes of How Life Is: Queer Youth Animated Season 1 will kick off on Tuesday, June 1 on The Future Perfect’s YouTube and IGTV. New episodes will be released in pairs on Tuesdays throughout the month on June 8, 15, 22 and 29.

The announcement was made by Celeste Lecesne, The Future Perfect Project co-founder, Academy Award-winning writer, and co-founder of The Trevor Project. “The current generation of queer young people has a lot to teach us about what it means to be fully human — if only we will listen,” Lecesne said. “Just as my generation fought so hard for the right to be ourselves as out gays and lesbians, this generation is fighting to be recognized and respected as the people they know themselves to be.”

How Life Is: Queer Youth Animated showcases how Generation Z is changing what it means to be LGBTQIA+. They are the first generation to live a life with the answers at their fingertips, and these two-minute films reveal that they are incredibly well informed about the world and important issues such as social justice, politics and climate crisis.

“We hand them the mic and bring their stories to life with the help of an LGBTQIA+ creative team. The result is a two-minute look into their unique lives that everyone can learn from,” said Ryan Amador, The Future Perfect Project co-founder, ASCAP Award-winning songwriter, and recording artist. “How Life Is: Queer Youth Animated spreads the word about queer youth and creates a world where they are safe, seen, and celebrated in their homes and communities.”

Matching the identity of each young person with their animator was a top priority. The Future Perfect initiated an extensive search process to find animators who aligned closely with the subjects of the interview in terms of their race, gender and sexual identity. The animators worked to find the perfect expression of each young person’s experience. After the animation was complete, it was sent off to a composer who created an original score. The result is a hyper-collaborative expression of each young person’s unique voice and an overview of this generation of queer youth. Every animator on How Life Is: Queer Youth Animated identifies as LGBTQIA+.

The Future Perfect Project produces an array of multimedia projects created to amplify the voices of LGBTQIA+ youth. In addition to their media projects, FPP offers free, grant-funded online writing, arts and performance workshops to LGBTQIA+ youth and allies providing them with opportunities to express themselves.

In a recent study, The Trevor Project revealed that more than one in five LGBTQIA+ youth in the United States identify as a sexual orientation other than gay, lesbian or bisexual. It is a whole new world in which LGBTQIA+ youth are using terms like “queer, tri-sexual, omnisexual or pansexual” to describe their identity.

The Future Perfect Project is providing this new next generation of LGBTQIA+ and questioning young people with the tools to tell us what they know, what they feel, what they see, and what they see for a future in which every person gets to be perfectly and fully themselves.

How Life Is: Queer Youth Animated films:

    June 1

    • Cal – Animated by Sam Asher. Cal comes out to his family as a transgender man by throwing his own party and name-choosing ceremony. “I made my cake, and it was blue on the inside. And I wrote, ‘It’s a boy’ on it.”
    • Brianna – Animated by Tessa Dabney. Brianna is on a mission to make sure every Black bisexual woman feels like they are good enough. “If I can do my part just by speaking up and being strong about who I am, that in itself gives other queer black women the chance to do that.”

    June 8

    • Vivi – Animated by Isabelle Sigrid. When Vivi donated six inches of her hair, everyone assumed she was gay, but she wasn’t out yet. She finds support at her school to help her live her best, out, queer life. “I wish other kids would understand that if somebody is LGBT, there’s nothing wrong with them … people often confuse something being different with something being wrong.”
    • Zion – Animated by Bennie Candie. Gender and sexual identity have never been heavy topics for Zion, who grew up with a white, lesbian mom and a Black activist father. “I’m radical with a sweet side who gives good hugs.”

    June 15

    • Sarah – Animated by Mady G. When Sarah develops a crush on Kiera Knightly, her friends want her to “figure out” if she is gay or straight. “I don’t think I actually knew what bisexual was until like 6th grade, and I remember thinking, ‘Is that what I am?’”
    • Ken – Animated by Lily Ash Sakula. For Ken, who is non-binary, holding hands with their girlfriend in public is the most intimate and vulnerable demonstration of love. “For me, at least, I want to wear my heart on my arm and not my sleeve because it’s something that I don’t want to remove.”

    June 22

    • Cheyenne – Animated by Lindsay Villagomes. Cheyenne expresses gender fluidity through cosplaying and creates her own LGBTQIA+ representation through “ships.” “In your head, you’d can be like, ‘Oh, this character is queer’ and no one can tell you otherwise. It’s a good way to make your own representation and to normalize it for you.”
    • Logan – Animated by Iain Gardner. After struggling with her identity around gender and sexuality, Logan finally creates her own definition of what it means to be a bisexual woman. “The cool people are the ones who do whatever the hell they want and don’t let other people define who they are.”

    June 29

    • Will – Animated by Jules Webb. The homophobic culture at Will’s high school shows no sign of stopping, so his mom steps in with a great idea. “For a long time, for me, identity meant something that was not right within myself. Now I exist as openly as I can because I don’t want to go back.”
    • Juliana – Animated by Simone Maher With a quirky personality and a queer mom, Juliana wants her LGBTQIA+ community to know that she is an ally who understands what it is like to feel ‘different.’ “People are going to come for you no matter what you do, so might as well do something you love.”

  • Creativity Out of Chaos: CalArts Producers’ Show Heralds a Promising Animated Future in Uncertain Times

Creativity Out of Chaos: CalArts Producers’ Show Heralds a Promising Animated Future in Uncertain Times

This month, the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) carried on the always highly anticipated tradition of the Character Animation Producers’ Show, held as a virtual showcase presented by the REDCAT theater. Each year, faculty of the prestigious program — which has turned out some of the biggest names in feature and television animation — curates a selection of student films to introduce the latest crop of talent to the industry (and beyond)! This year’s celebration of student achievement is especially poignant, as these emerging animators faced the challenges and changes wrought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Maija Burnett, Director of CalArts’ Character Animation Program, explained in a recent email interview with Animation Magazine, “The CalArts Animation Showcase is a ‘can’t miss’ for animation fans and the animation industry because of the unique creative outlook and ingenuity CalArts students bring to the process of animation and filmmaking. They represent the next generation’s talent and storytelling. Their artistic sensibilities are honed through constant practice and the love of drawing and storytelling.”

The 2021 Producers’ Show welcomed Guest of Honor Elizabeth Ito, creator of Netflix original series City of Ghosts and an alum of the Character Animation Program. Marvin Bynoe’s Wolf and Cub was selected as the opening film, with awards bestowed on Fáros by Rayna Buxton (Walter and Gracie Lantz Animation Prize; watch here), 3:45 PM by Alisha Liu (Vimeo Award for Outstanding Achievement in Animated Filmmaking; watch here) and JUMBO by Jennifer Nie (Peers’ Pick; watch here).

“The students created truly impactful films during these trying times. The pandemic upended not only everyone’s lives, but also everyone’s creative workflows. Adaptation and flexibility were key,” said Burnett. “Staff, faculty and students had to reinvent every aspect of the way they worked. Staff members worked diligently to assist students’ remote technology and software needs; faculty redesigned their courses and adapted their curriculum and methodology; students rose to the occasion, making their films at home, juggling all of the demands of their college education from afar, keeping in touch with and supporting each other, and forging new bonds and friendships through the online space.”

“Themes of belonging and contemplation were woven throughout this year’s collection of films,” Burnett noted. While all of the curated showcase shorts present the distinct visions and promising craft of animation’s next generation, the program director singled out 2021 Walter and Gracie Lantz Animation Prize winner Fáros by Rayna Buxton as a shining stand-out: “Rayna used Toon Boom Harmony to create a truly beautiful and unique film, about a lighthouse keeper and his cat, Clam. The film is a surreal, cinematic exploration of the themes of isolation and connection, animated in a puppet-style fashion, to great effect.”

An overview of the selected Character Animation Virtual Producers’ Show shorts is available here. Collections of the CalArts Character Animation student films are available on Vimeo and YouTube official channels.
