Super-Powered and Sophisticated: Robert Kirkman’s ‘Invincible’ Hits Amazon Prime

***This article originally appeared in the April ’21 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 309)***

If you like your animated superheroes to be complicated characters who wear brightly colored spandex costumes, you are going to love the new adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s popular Invincible series, which arrives on Amazon this Friday, March 26. The show, which was created by Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, is based on the hit comic book published by Kirkman’s own Image imprint between 2003 and 2018.

The great-looking show follows the adventures of Mark Grayson (voiced by Steven Yeun), a high school student who discovers that he has inherited the superhuman abilities of his powerful extraterrestrial father, Omni-Man (voiced by J.K. Simmons). Kirkman says his new show celebrates the magic of the superhero genre and doesn’t stray away from any of the cool elements that fans of the comic book have fallen for over the years. “It has crazy storylines and offers aspects of the superhero world that haven’t been represented in animation,” he says during a recent phone interview. “We really get to see superheroes in a new light, and hopefully we’ll be expanding the genre.”

Kirkman, who worked closely with Walker, supervising director Jeff Allen and the team at Skybound Entertainment (The Walking Dead), says he was inspired by retelling his dramatic tale in the one-hour animation format. “There was a ton of figuring out how to best approach the story about this young character as he enters this crazy world of superheroes,” he notes. “It was a thrilling journey to watch our hero Mark mature and come to his own throughout the eight hours of the first season.”

    Parallel Projects

Development for the show started about four years ago at the same time that Kirkman began exploring a live-action feature adaptation of the property with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. (The movie version is also moving forward.) He says one of the main challenges of the project was getting an animation studio to commit to a 2D hand-drawn show for that duration. The production found a great partner in Korean studio Maven Image Platform, which has worked on projects such as Harley Quinn and Reign of the Supermen, as well as Japan’s TAP studio (which worked on episode four of the show). Skybound’s Vancouver studio handles the CG effects of the show.

“That was a big undertaking, especially since many of the studios around the world are very busy right now,” explains Kirkman. “So it felt like we set out to do the impossible. I can’t say enough about the hard work that all these great animation teams have done to make this happen. That was a very gratifying sight to see.”

“Cory Walker and I wrapped up our work on the comic books after 16 years and 144 issues and we just had to roll into adapting it into an animated series,” recalls Kirkman. “We revisited this world in a new light and got to watch all these amazing characters come to life. I went through a similar process with The Walking Dead, but here we got to work with voice actors and animation to hone it as closely as possible to the comic book.”

“We were able to have some high-octane scenes with lots of drama and cool violence,” he notes. “I mean, we get to see heads explode and eyeballs flying around. We also have some truly heartbreaking scenes. We strengthened the narrative by moving some events around and reconstructed subplots so that audiences can see the evolution of the story in a clear way. Fans of the comic books will get the scenes they are expecting to see, but there will be lots of twists and turns as we’re expanding on the stories in different ways.”

A Die-Hard Fan at the Helm

Invincible’s supervising director Jeff Allen says he was a huge fan of the comic-book series from the very first issue. “I loved both the writing and the art, and was totally blown away by it,” says Allen, a TV animation biz veteran whose directing credits include Avengers Assemble, Ultimate Spider-Man and Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue. “I collected every issue all the way to the final one, and when they came up with the hardcover volume and compendiums, I bought them, too! I’d keep reading them again and started from the beginning, too. I’ve read parts of it thousands of times!”

Allen says not having to talk down to the younger audiences of the show has been a very liberating experience. “In other animated shows I had worked on, we weren’t allowed to show a character be thrown out of a glass window because that’d be dangerous, so they would have to be thrown out of an open window, for example,” he explains. “We can also point a gun at the camera, which isn’t allowed in other animated shows. The scripts are all well-written and intelligent and there’s a rewarding overarching storyline for the whole show. Not only do I get to work on an adult-themed superhero show, it’s one that is near and dear to my heart.”

    Invincible
    Invincible

The show adheres to what audiences are expected to see in a superhero comic adaptation, but as Allen points out, the grown-up elements definitely push the envelope. “Corey Walker, who co-created the comic-book with Robert, is our character designer — so it looks like he drew the whole show,” he notes. “It’s a brightly colored superhero cartoon, but there’s the juxtaposition with blood and gore. I don’t want to spoil anything, but things get bloodier and darker as the season progresses. Even our title cards get bloodier with each episode!”

Thematically, the show’s subject matter is also deeper and darker. Allen says the heart of Invincible is Mark’s difficult journey as he has to decide what kind of a superhero he wants to be. “We have 140 issues to delve in, and hopefully we can tell a lot of wonderful stuff as we explore every nook and cranny of the comic books,” he says. “It’s a lot different than adapting source material to a movie, which means you have to compact the story down into two hours. We can take our time.”

When asked about the target audience for the series, Allen says it’s definitely PG-13. “My daughter just turned 13 and I ask myself, will she be watching the show with us? Her friends are big Walking Dead fans. But when I think about myself when I was 10, my friends and I would be so happy to watch a show like this!”

    From Studio to Bedroom

Of course, like many other TV creatives, Allen and his team had to deal with the COVID pandemic and the adjustments necessary to work from home. But since many of the 220 people working on the show were based in studios in Vancouver, Korea and Japan, it was a smoother transition than most. “I don’t miss commuting to work,” he says. “Editing was a little rough in the beginning, but Evercast [the remote collaboration platform] took care of that. I think it ended up working out better for the production. Everyone was more productive and we got a lot more done. For me, especially, since at home my office is right next to my bed! But I do miss interacting with people and sitting in the edit room.”

    Heroes in Spandex

“I love the feeling of this world of superheroes that Robert has created,” Kirkman explains. “I love the brightly colored spandex costumes they wear. Plus, it’s a great coming-of-age story about our main character, and it doesn’t exactly go in the direction you’d expect it to go. Robert wrote the first and the final (eighth) episode of the season, and we really wanted to knock it out of the park. I am really proud of what we did, and I really want to do better in Season Two!”

    Invincible
    Invincible

As a kid, Allen loved reading comic books and watching Tom and Jerry cartoons, Thundarr the Barbarian and The Herculoids on TV. He says he grew up wanting to be a comic-book artist for Marvel and to be a film director. Directing animated shows like Invincible has allowed him to combine both of his dreams. He also mentions that working with a comic-book icon like Kirkman has been a real thrill.

“He is very laid-back, extremely funny and no-nonsense, and he tells you straight out if he doesn’t like something or thinks something is a stupid idea,” admits Allen. “He is always filled with ideas. I remember sitting in a room with him and our composer, and I got a little starstruck. My main goal was to make him and Cory happy. Of course, things go wrong — but when things work, you feel like this weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Do you remember in the movie Interstellar, when Matthew McConaughey is watching the video of his adult daughter and he’s bawling? That’s what I was doing, when everything was right and we didn’t need any retakes!”

    Invincible
    Invincible

Kirkman mentions that shows like The Transformers and G.I. Joe were big touchstones of his childhood, and he recognizes the power animated worlds can have on young minds. “I wasn’t the only one who rushed home from high school to watch Batman: The Animated Series on TV,” he notes. “I also love Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D. and the Akira movie. It’s been absolutely amazing to watch these massive streaming platforms finally recognize the values of storytelling and what adult animation is on the cusp of being able to do. Anime fans have been watching this stuff for years and know what the medium is capable of.”

For Kirkman and his team, Invincible is a harbinger of the next wave of superhero shows on the small screen. “We are going to see insane spectacle and crazy action-packed adult animation dominating the streaming landscape in the near future,” he predicts. “Those movies and adult animation appeal to the same audience, and streaming platforms are recognizing this. It’s a new era.”

Invincible premieres on Amazon Prime on March 26. New episodes arrive weekly on Fridays.

Epic Story Media, Milkcow Launch ‘Piper’s Pony Tales’ with Breyer on Board

Independent content creation, distribution and licensing company Epic Story Media Inc. (ESM) and kids and family content creation and production company Milkcow Media have teamed up to co-produce a brand new short-form series Piper’s Pony Tales, created by Milkcow Media’s Alexander Bar (Ricky Zoom, Wolf Joe, Ranger Rob, Mike the Knight).

Targeted to preschoolers, the series brings the world of ponies to life through kids’ imagination using highly articulated puppets. The series will launch this month on a dedicated YouTube channel with Epic Story Media handling all licensing & merchandising and global content distribution.

ESM has signed Breyer Horses as the Master Toy partner for the project in North America and Latin America and is currently in discussion with other global partners for toy and broadcast placement. Breyer, a division of Reeves International, Inc, is the number one maker of authentic, premium, and collectible model horses in North America since 1950.

In the series, Piper loves to daydream about having a pony of her very own. But, for now, the closest thing she has is her toy horse, Spark and her stable playset. Piper has turned her playroom at home into a sprawling setting for making up “Pony Tales”! Together with her best friends, Casey and Paloma, the three use their well-loved toy ponies to act out exciting adventures. And when Piper makes up stories about her best horse friends, they magically come to life through the power of her imagination, transporting her and her pals into amazing adventures!

Piper’s Pony Tales is about the fantasy, freedom and adventure of owning a pony. But it’s also about the universal magic every child possesses — their own imagination! Using the power of roleplay and imagination, Piper unlocks fantastic adventures for herself and her friends and makes all their pony wishes come true. She also learns along the way that “first freedoms”, as well as the love and respect of her pony, are earned.

The series makes use of the dolls as puppets and uses visual effects to animate their faces and to bring the stories to life. Since Piper’s world is powered by a kid’s imagination, the show features DIY, craft-like sets, so kids are empowered to create their own stories at home. Piper’s Pony Tales has received financial support from the Shaw Rocket Fund and the Canada Media Fund through the CMF-SRF Kids Digital Animated Series Program.

“We are so proud of Piper’s Pony Tales – from its premise of unlocking kids’ imagination so that they can create magic in their own homes, to the diverse leading cast and the unique style we’re pioneering to bring them to life,” said Ken Faier, President & Founder of Epic Story Media. “We are excited to have a strong partner in Breyer, whose expertise has helped us to make sure we remain true to the equestrian way and provided valuable consultation in the development of Piper’s core brand values. We know that this show will connect with all kids who love horses and will inspire a future generation of horse fans as they are encouraged to translate their viewing experience to one of imaginative play with family and friends.”

“As part of the leading equestrian lifestyle brand of toys, gifts, collectibles and experiences, it is exciting to be part of introducing preschoolers to the enchanting world of horses. Piper’s Pony Tales will create long lasting memories of horse play and a love of horses,” said Tony Fleischmann, President of Breyer.

  • KingstOOn Details Diversity Focus for 2021 Event

KingstOOn Details Diversity Focus for 2021 Event

The KingstOOn Animation Conference and Film Festival, taking place virtually April 21-25, has pinpointed “Diversity in Animation” as the central theme for this year’s staging. The organizers have structured three distinct sessions focusing on the issues of diversity and cultural inclusion within the media: ‘Diversity in the Media Industry,’ ‘Black Women in the World of Animation’ and a conversation around the Academy Award winning short film ‘The Creation of Hair Love – From Script to Screen.’

Registration for KingstOOn is free and can be accessed at www.kingstoonfest.com.

Organizers point out that Jamaica is an entirely appropriate place from which to host a global conversation about “Diversity in Animation.” Though small, the island itself is a rich study in diversity with its history of slavery, indentureship and migration paving the way for a potpourri of cultures reflected today in its demography, cuisine, art and its stories. These stories frame the varied life experiences that make Jamaica and the Caribbean a hotbed for creative, disparate content, and tackle the prevalence of stereotypes and one-dimensional portrayals of culture, race, religion, disability, gender and sexual orientation.

KingstOOn’s Animation Specialist Robert Reid points out, “The media influences us all from a very early age, the music we listen to, the books we read, the films we watch and the video-games we play – these become our frames of reference and so it is crucial that the characters and messages in media reflect as much as possible the diversity that exists in the world.”

The Creation of Hair Love – From Script to Screen
    Wednesday, April 21, 11:15 a.m. EST
The moving 2020 Oscar winning story of a father’s struggle with his daughter’s hair in the film Hair Love is the focus of this stimulating conversation with the production team at Lion Forge, who not only took home the Academy Award with this, their first film, but has since created the spinoff series Young Love, picked up by HBO Max. The session will feature Carl Reed and David Steward II, founders of Lion Forge Animation and fervent advocates of representation in media. They will be joined by Everett Downing Jr., who co-directed the short film alongside Matthew Cherry and Bruce W. Smith, as well as Hair Love story artist and illustrator Pearl Low.

    Diversity in the Media Industry
    Saturday, April 24, noon EST
Jay Francis, Disney’s Vice President Current Series, Diversity & Inclusion, and Camille Eden, Vice President Recruiting and Talent Development at Nickelodeon, will address inclusion and minimizing disparity in content creation. The panel will be moderated by Mounia Aram, Founder and President of The Mounia Aram Company: a production and distribution house that markets African animation stories, movies and series to international audiences.

Black Women in the World of Animation
    Sunday, April 25, noon EST
In a field dominated by white males, this panel shines a light on the personal experiences of four notable and prominent black women in the world of animation and their commitment to increasing opportunities for women and minorities. They will tell stories of their personal struggles and the roles they play in moving the entertainment industry to take action to improve the level of visibility of women in the industry. Panelists are Melanie Goolsby of Netflix; Sonya Carey, Founder of The Animation Lounge; Kimberly Wright of Sesame Street Workshop and Pilar Newton of Pilar Toons. The panel will be moderated by Taylor K. Shaw, Founder & CEO of Black Women Animate, a visionary creator, writer and activist who lobbies for representation across the media landscape.

  • VES Names Peter Jackson Lifetime Achievement Awardee

VES Names Peter Jackson Lifetime Achievement Awardee

Today, the Visual Effects Society (VES), the industry’s professional global honorary society, named Sir Peter Jackson, Academy, DGA, PGA and VES Award-winning director-producer-screenwriter, as the forthcoming recipient of the VES Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his valuable contributions to filmed entertainment. The award will be presented at the 19th Annual VES Awards, streaming worldwide on April 6/7 (depending on time zone) and hosted by comedian Patton Oswalt.

The VES Lifetime Achievement Award, bestowed by the VES Board of Directors, recognizes an outstanding body of work that has significantly contributed to the art and/or science of the visual effects industry. VES will honor Jackson for his consummate artistry, expansive storytelling and profound gift for blending iconic imagery and unforgettable narrative on an epic scale. Jackson’s ability to harness craft to bring his unique visions to life has resulted in cinematic experiences that have transported and transfixed audiences worldwide. And his state-of-the-art work to restore archival footage has made him a lauded champion of film history and restoration.

“Sir Peter Jackson is one of the most innovative filmmakers of our generation,” said Lisa Cooke, VES Board Chair. “Peter pushes the known boundaries of filmmaking and his vision and contributions to the art are legendary. He has redefined the relationship between the viewer and the story – you can easily see this from the epic cult followings of his highly engaging work, a testament to his expert blending of visual effects, evocative characters and a remarkable imagination. For this and more, we are honored to award Peter with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.”

“I’m thrilled and gratified to receive the VES Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Jackson. “If I was ever going to be honored for my lifetime of work, I would have chosen the VES award, because I started my career as a seven-year-old making models and shooting them with a Super 8 camera. The dream of making visual effects was the seed of my whole world as a filmmaker. But just because it’s called Lifetime, don’t think I’ve peaked; there’s a lot more to come!”

Sir Peter Jackson made history with The Lord of the Rings trilogy, becoming the first person to direct three major feature films simultaneously. The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King were nominated for and collected a slew of awards from around the globe – including a total of 12 VES Awards across the trilogy — with The Return of the King receiving his most impressive collection of awards. Keanu Reeves Teams with Netflix for ‘BRZRKR’ Movie, Anime Series

Netflix has acquired the rights to the just-launched BOOM! Studios comic book BRZRKR, with plans to first adapt the story into a feature film followed by an anime spinoff series. Both projects will star and be executive produced by Keanu Reeves, who created the comics based on an original concept the Hollywood icon developed over a number of years. The streaming giant and publisher have a first-look deal for live-action and animated series.

BRZRKR is a brutally epic saga about an immortal warrior’s 80,000 year fight through the ages. The man known only as “B” is half-mortal and half-god, cursed and compelled to violence… even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the Earth for centuries, B may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence…and how to end it.

The anime series will further expand the BRZRKR universe by exploring different elements of the story. In the series, Reeves will reprise his role and voice his character. The adaptations will be produced by Reeves; Ross Richie and Stephen Christy for BOOM! Studios; and Stephen Hamel for Company Films. Adam Yoelin for BOOM! Studios will Executive Produce.

The first issue of BRZRKR was released on March 3, and has already sold over 615,000 copies — making it the highest-selling launch title in almost 30 years. The 12-issue limited series is created by Reeves, written by Reeves and New York Times bestselling writer Matt Kindt, and illustrated by famed Marvel artist Ron Garney with colors by Bill Crabtree, letters by Clem Robins, and character designs and covers by Rafael Grampá.

Reeves recently completed production on Matrix 4, due out later this year, and will begin production on John Wick 4 this spring.

  • Pete Browngardt Inks Overall Deal with WB Animation & Cartoon Network Studios

Emmy-nominated producer Pete Browngardt (Looney Tunes Cartoons, Clarence, Uncle Grandpa) has signed an exclusive, multiyear cross-studio overall deal with Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) and Cartoon Network Studios (CNS).

Under this pioneering overall deal, Browngardt will develop and produce original animated programming at both WBA and CNS, allowing maximum creative flexibility to develop original material and access to the extensive character and franchise libraries at each studio. Browngardt will pursue projects intended for a variety of audiences including preschool, kids, adult and family/co-viewing across all WarnerMedia platforms, as well as external outlets and services.

“This inaugural cross-studio deal is one example of how we intend to meet the growing demand for animated content by being innovative, in not just our storytelling, but in the opportunities we provide to creatives in our industry,” said Sam Register, President of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios. “It was no small task to bring the Looney Tunes back to their classic shorts and Pete knocked it out of the park with Looney Tunes Cartoons. He is one of our most prolific producers, with a love for the art of animation, that fuels his bold and imaginative ideas. I’m thrilled that he will continue creating at Warner Bros. Animation and am excited to see how he brings that same passion to Cartoon Network Studios.”

Browngardt said, “I have been lucky enough to call each of these studios my home at different points in my career. It’s only fitting that I begin this next run with the best of both worlds — returning home to Cartoon Network Studios and continuing my partnership with Warner Bros. Animation, which has been one of the most fulfilling of my career.”

Browngardt currently serves as executive producer on the HBO Max series Looney Tunes Cartoons. The series recently received a program nomination from the Producers Guild Awards as well as individual achievement nominations from the Annie Awards. Curse of the Monkeybird, an animated short from the series, was awarded the top prize for Animation for Young Audiences (Ages 6-12) at the 43rd Annual Ottawa International Animation Film Festival in 2019.

Prior to arriving at Warner Bros. Animation, Browngardt was the creator and executive producer of the Emmy Award-winning Cartoon Network series Uncle Grandpa as well as creator of the Annecy and Emmy Award winning series Secret Mountain Fort Awesome. Previous credits also include work on a number of Cartoon Network shows, including Chowder, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and Adventure Time.

Browngardt studied character animation at CalArts and began working professionally on Futurama at age 19, followed by Industrial Light & Magic and MTV Animation.

“What makes this experience so unique is that it will be streamed on Spacetoon Go platform in addition to Spacetoon TV where we were keen to provide more flexible options for mothers,” he added. “This is in addition the purposeful content delivered by experts in nutrition and health in addition directed to children and mothers.”
