  • DNEG Feature Animation Appoints Ted Ty, Archie Donato to Creative Team

DNEG Feature Animation has announced the appointment of two new senior creative hires to bolster its leadership team. Ted Ty joins as Global Head of Character Animation based in Montreal, while Archie Donato relocates from Los Angeles to join the team as VFX Supervisor on a major new project in London. The studio is currently in production on a number of high-profile animated projects, including animated musical feature Under the Boardwalk for Paramount Animation, and is in development on the very first animated adaptation of The Great Gatsby with Oscar-winning director William Joyce.

These new hires follow the appointment of former Skydance executive David Prescott, who joined the team last year as Senior Vice President of Creative Production.

“We continue to build our talented Feature Animation team, particularly in North America, to accommodate an ever-growing demand from our clients for top-quality animated content,” said Prescott. “I’m delighted to welcome Archie and Ted to the team. I’ve known, worked with and respected them both for many years, and they bring unique skillsets and experience to our senior creative leadership team.”

Global Head of Character Animation Ted Ty joins DNEG Feature Animation with over 25 years of experience and a deep understanding of both 2D and 3D animation. Ty started his career at Walt Disney Animation, where he worked as a 2D animator under the mentorship of animation legends such as Mark Henn, Ruben Aquino and James Baxter on animated features such as Mulan and Lilo & Stitch. Following a move to DreamWorks, he contributed to major 3D animated features such as Puss in Boots, How To Train Your Dragon 2 and Rise of the Guardians.

Ty is a noted and prolific animation instructor, having taught animation masterclasses at CalArts, CTNX Expo, DreamWorks, SCAD, Pixel Quebec and iAnimate.net. He is also a Master Teacher at YoungArts Foundation. His most recent work was as head of animation and co-director of animated action-comedy feature Fireheart.

“I’m super excited to join a company that shares so many of my own beliefs,” said Ty. “I’m bringing the best of my experiences from other studios to help create something unique at DNEG Feature Animation — a studio where talent can be nurtured and supported, where there is a genuine culture of mentorship and continuing education, and where human and artistic goals are taken into consideration with no compromise on the quality of the work. That, to me, is really exciting!”

VFX Supervisor Archie Donato brings a cinematic perspective and a background in live -action filmmaking to his new role for DNEG Feature Animation, as well as experience at ILM, Digital Domain, Rhythm & Hues and 17 years at DreamWorks Animation. During his time at DreamWorks, Archie contributed to many of the studio’s biggest films, most notably as CG lead on Kung Fu Panda, Megamind, Monsters vs Aliens and Shrek Forever After, lighting supervisor on Rise of the Guardians and CG supervisor on Mr. Peabody & Sherman. Most recently, Donato has turned his talents to VFX supervision for episodic content on shows like Home Before Dark for Apple TV+, Messiah for Netflix and The Loudest Voice for Showtime.

“The fact that I packed up in L.A. and moved to London during a pandemic should be an indication of how excited I am to be joining DNEG Feature Animation,” Donato noted. “It’s not just the major animated event release that I am supervising that attracted me to this role — it’s also the opportunity to be part of a company that is well on its way to becoming a heavyweight player in the feature animation industry, backed by one of the world’s leading and most respected VFX companies.”

DNEG Feature Animation’s Tom Jacomb commented, “I am delighted to welcome Archie and Ted to the team. This is a really exciting time for us, with our first feature animation project, Ron’s Gone Wrong, due for release later this year and three new projects in production and a number of others in the pipeline. Both Archie and Ted have a huge amount of experience and expertise, and they are going to play key roles in leading and inspiring our talented global teams, ensuring that our creative output is second to none, and supporting our wonderful filmmaking partners.”

Trailer: Ship Gets Real in ‘Solar Opposites’ S2 on Hulu

The ill-adjusting extra terrestrials of Hulu’s original adult animated comedy Solar Opposites experience a failure to launch in the newly released Season 2 trailer. That’s right: Korov, Yumyulack, Terry and Jesse are stuck on Earth for another eight episodes of sci-fi insanity, crash landing Friday, March 26.

Co-created by Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty) and Mike McMahan (ex-writer’s assistant on Rick and Morty), Solar Opposites centers on a team of four aliens who escape their exploding homeworld only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. Their mission: protect the Pupa, a living super computer that will one day evolve into its true form, consume them and terraform the Earth.

On season two of Solar Opposites, the Solar Opposites take it bigger, funnier, and more opposite than ever before.

Solar Opposites is executive produced by Roiland, McMahan and Josh Bycel. The series is produced by 20th Television.

But even after all that time, there are still many stories and time periods in Aang’s world that we are eager to bring to life. We are fortunate to have an ever-growing community of passionate fans that enjoys exploring the Avatarverse as much as we do. And with this new Avatar Studios venture we have an unparalleled opportunity to develop our franchise and its storytelling on a vast scale, in myriad exciting ways and mediums. • Wizart’s ‘The Warrior Princess’ Fights Toon Fairytale Stereotypes

Wizart’s ‘The Warrior Princess’ Fights Toon Fairytale Stereotypes

Wizart Animation, the successful Russian studio behind the well-known Snow Queen franchise – is preparing new animated feature releases for its global audience. The studio’s next major premiere will be The Warrior Princess – a romantic comedy that rewrites the stereotypical fairytale narrative.

The central character, Mila, can’t be with her beloved Ronan, even though she really wants to – the circumstances always interfere. Ahead of the European Film Market, Vladimir Nikolaev, Wizart’s General Producer, and Alexey Zamyslov, the director of the movie, gave us the scoop on Mila’s journey of learning to stay true to herself, never give up, and to fight for her love – even if everyone around her believes that princesses aren’t cut out for fighting.

    Vladimir Nikolaev
    Vladimir Nikolaev

Tell us about the new movie — we hear it’s not the usual princess story audiences are accustomed to!

Vladimir Nikolaev: The Warrior Princess is absolutely not a typical story. That’s the movie about a strong-willed person, a princess who is ready not only to overcome the difficulties but also change the world around her.

Our romantic comedy addresses the problem that has always been relevant – don’t give in to the stereotypes! The main character, Mila, is not willing to surrender to the circumstances – she chooses her own way and follows it fearlessly. I have to mention, she is pretty good at listening to her heart!

What attracted you to the idea of a “warrior princess” for the central character?

Alexey Zamyslov: I can say, the image of a strong heroic woman is our national trait – this theme has always been a part of the cultural code. Even our classics had a saying about such female characters, that they can “stop a running horse and enter a burning hut.”

Also, once we started to plunge into The Warrior Princess project, we noticed that our features had a female lead before, as well. In The Snow Queen franchise, it was Gerda, a fearless girl who went on a dangerous adventure to rescue her brother. In Secret Magic Control Agency, it is Gretel, the kingdom’s best agent, who is able to solve the biggest crime of the century.

How do the movie’s themes expand on this strong female protagonist’s message?

Zamyslov: The Warrior Princess is a very complex movie. So, as our primary audience is children, we are going to speak about the topics they can relate to – growing up and searching for self. As for the adults, they will be interested to see the conflict between children and their parents due to different life views, as well as their eventual understanding and acceptance of each other.

Another thing we find important to discuss is traditions. Does modern society need all of them? Or maybe it’s time we gave up on some of them and created new ones? Of course, we can’t give the exact answers to all those difficult questions – but we will certainly think them through in a light comic form, together with our audience.

    Alexey Zamyslov
    Alexey Zamyslov

Would you say that The Warrior Princess is based on the Russian storytelling traditions?

Zamyslov: We found inspiration in folklore fairytales, and obviously used our culture. However, it’s rather an original local story translated into the global language. We aimed to make the story appealing for anyone from any part of the world.

Who is Wizart partnering with on this production? What is the distribution plan?

Nikolaev: We’re working on The Warrior Princess with the same team which was working on The Snow Queen franchise and Secret Magic Control Agency (a.k.a. Hansel & Gretel). We’ve also involved some experts and screenwriters from the U.S. and Europe. Since our first feature, the quality of Wizart’s work has made a huge leap forward, as we put in a lot of effort to improve it with each new release. Now, the level of our animation is at the peak of high technologies. The audience will surely notice it after watching SMCA. As for the wide release of The Warrior Princess, you will get to see it as soon as next year.

Do you believe The Warrior Princess has the same qualities that made The Snow Queen so popular around the world?

Nikolaev: The Snow Queen is so successful because we did a high-quality job adapting Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale, a fairytale that has endured through centuries. We managed to keep the drama elements and create charismatic characters. We used the same approach for Secret Magic Control Agency: we reprocessed the “Hansel and Gretel” fairytale and transformed a globally known scary story into a comedy adventure. The Warrior Princess perfectly suits this list of promising projects!

By the way, in 2022 we are releasing the fifth Snow Queen movie, in which our characters – who have grown up a lot within these 10 years – will become children again and go on absolutely new adventures. Maybe it will take the franchise fans a bit to recognize their favorite characters (we’ve done some redesigning), but we are totally sure Wizart’s fans will love the movie.

What other surprises has Wizart prepared for audiences in 2021?

Nikolaev: We’ve started 2021 by surprising ourselves: Our animation enters diametrically opposite global platforms of East and West. We have never had such a huge outreach before – it’s about 300 million viewers.

Of course, we will continue to bring more surprises and joy to our fans. This year, apart from the two feature movies, we will also release two TV shows for children of different age groups. They are Tin’s Firebots, about the adventures of robot firefighters, and Backpack, about a little boy who explores the world around him with the help of some objects that live inside his backpack.

Wizart Animation is participating in the European Film Market (www.efm-berlinale.de/en); contact the studio at sales@wizartanimation.com or visit www.wizartanimation.com to learn more.

  • ‘Cinefex’ Magazine Shuts Down after Four Decades

‘Cinefex’ Magazine Shuts Down after Four Decades

Having just marked its 40th anniversary last year, Cinefex magazine — “the journal of cinematic illusions” — has announced it is ceasing publication and shutting up shop. The final issue, #172, rolled off the presses with The Mandalorian on the cover and Cinefex‘s particular in-depth explorations of the VFX artistry and technology behind Star Trek: Discovery, Raised by Wolves,The Stand and Mank between its lushly illustrated pages.

In a notice posted to the magazine’s Facebook page, the Cinefex team noted the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was a key factor in the decision to close down. As filming, production and exhibition came to a halt, the magazine was forced to pause bimonthly publication after the June 2020 issue.

    The full statement reads:

    CINEFEX

    1980-2021

A year ago this month, Cinefex celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Historically, it was a publishing landmark few magazines achieve, and we were immensely proud of our accomplishment and grateful to those whose support and dedication helped us to achieve it.

    Then the world upended.

Within weeks, the coronavirus pandemic swept across the planet, deadly and implacable; and to this date, its inexorable march through countries, communities and families remains largely unchecked.

The human toll has been devastating, but so, too, the toll upon businesses, countless numbers of which shut down due to economic necessity or government mandate.

More than 100,000 of those businesses, in the U.S. alone, will never reopen.

We are deeply sad to announce that Cinefex will be among them.

The pandemic deprived us of subject matter, retail outlets, and, most critically, advertisers, many of whom, like us, struggled to remain afloat in a climate of intense turmoil and uncertainty.

We did our best to weather the storm, but ultimately the storm prevailed.

We have just shipped the final issue of a magazine that has documented and celebrated one of the most vibrant and exciting art forms in entertainment history. It has been our great honor and privilege to do so.

We bid you a fond farewell.

  • Linetest Illustrates Noise Threat to Whales in Evocative WWF Spot

Linetest Illustrates Noise Threat to Whales in Evocative WWF Spot

The plight of marine mammals subject to human-induced noise pollution in the Arctic Ocean, particularly bowhead whales, is depicted in a moving new spot created and produced by Vancouver-based animation and design studio Linetest.

Titled Less Noise, More Life, the piece debuted on February 20, World Whale Day, on the website of the WWF Arctic Programme at arcticwwf.org. It launches just as a new study on the impact of ocean noise, recently published in the journal Science, has generated headlines around the world.

Providing the voiceover for the 90-second spot is actress and activist Tantoo Cardinal, one of the most recognized and revered Cree/Métis actresses in Canada. Viewers are urged to share the film on their social channels with the hashtags #LessNoiseMoreLife and #WorldWhaleDay, and to follow the WWF Arctic Programme on Twitter (@WWF_Arctic) and Instagram (@wwf_arctic) to learn more about this issue.

Hao Chen, Creative Director of Linetest, notes that WWF turned to the studio not only for the production but to help develop the script as well. They handed over reams of data and background information on the impact of noise on whales, “and from there we started forming the story that would follow the whales’ lives,” he explains. “There’s always a close collaboration with our clients, and that was no different on this project. Not only was that the case between our studio and WWF, but among our team as well. I wanted to make sure the spot was accurate and hit all the right emotional beats.”

The studio’s brief was to build an engaging, story-driven film that would help raise awareness of the problem and keep the next generation of these great mammals safe from underwater noise. The film needed to point out that the issue has an impact on Indigenous peoples and cultures, too, particularly on the livelihoods of these communities that depend on a healthy ocean for subsistence.

“We gave Linetest a job of almost epic proportions,” says Leanne Clare, Sr. Manager of Communications for WWF’s Arctic Programme. “We asked for a beautiful animation about a concept most people have never even heard about. At the same time, we wanted the audience to connect emotionally to a bowhead whale and her calf over the course of 200 years, and to tell that story in a minute and a half.”

“We are absolutely thrilled with the result,” Clare continues. “It was really rewarding for us to partner with a creative studio that is as committed as we are to raising awareness about the threats of underwater noise in the Arctic.”

Data provided by WWF reveals the growth in shipping traffic in Arctic sea lanes and points out that, as sea ice recedes due to rapid climate change, more areas of the ocean are opening up to shipping, exacerbating an already dire situation. It is urging governments to band together to support additional research into the problem.

WWF – LESS NOISE MORE LIFE from Linetest on Vimeo.

The camera opens on an Indigenous kayaker working his way through the water, and then moves below the surface, where a mother bowhead and her young calf are moving through the currents amidst schools of fish and vegetation. Backed by a lush, cinematic underscore, we at first hear what the whales hear in their habitat – assorted clicks, whistles, songs of marine life and the distinctive sharp sound of sea ice cracking. Cardinal’s voiceover sets the tone: “These were the natural sounds in the Arctic ocean for thousands of years. As industrialization moved into the Arctic, our piercing sounds of progress invaded their space.”

Above, on the surface, ships begin to appear, under sail at first, then powered by steam, increasing in size and number as the spot progresses and eventually joined by submarines. The mother whale and her calf appear increasingly frantic as they try to escape the constant din, while Cardinal’s narration explains that “within their incredible 200-year lifespan, bowhead whales have witnessed an overwhelming change. Now, this pollution is a threat to caring for their young, finding food and searching for a mate.”

Visually, the spot explores the vastness of its underwater setting using shades and tints of blue to convey a sense of atmosphere. The sound design was treated as its own character, and the color palette Chen and the designers chose were inspired by sonar imaging mixed with a hint of aurora borealis. Blurs and contrasts were used to contribute to the sense of motion, beyond the animation itself, which tapped a combination of illustrative 2D and 3D techniques to offer a fresh, clean style.

“WWF’s use of a more evocative motion design style was understandable, given how complex this story would have been to convey using live-action or full CG,” Chen says. “It’s a story about the past, present and future. And animation is just so flexible in this regard. They wanted a really beautiful piece that people would be drawn to, and we were able to do that in how we visualized the whale sounds and the impact of noise pollution.”

“There was a lot of sensitivity to the story,” adds Linetest Producer Zoe Coleman. “We wanted this to be very expressive, while still being accurate. This is, after all, a message of hope; unlike greenhouse gases, this is pollution with a solution. It’s a problem we more easily fix by doing things like slowing ocean traffic and altering routes.”

“This is the kind of work we love to do,” Chen concludes. “The opportunity to tackle an open brief with collaborative clients, while standing behind an important cause, made this assignment particularly meaningful. We always want to create something new with each project, and the team at WWF allowed us to do just that!”

  • Pioneering, ‘Immensely Private’ Animator Brenda Banks Has Died

Pioneering, ‘Immensely Private’ Animator Brenda Banks Has Died

Brenda Banks, one of the first Black women to become a professional animator, reportedly died December 30, 2020. The news was shared from the Animation Guild by animator, educator and historian Tom Sito on Facebook on Monday. Described by Sito as an “immensely private person,” Banks is best known for her work on Ralph Bakshi’s groundbreaking indie features, as well as iconic toons like Looney Tunes, The Simpsons and King of the Hill.

    Brenda Banks
    Brenda Banks

In an installment of his “Animation Anecdotes” on CartoonResearch.com several years ago, animation historian Jim Korkis relates Bakshi’s recollections of hiring the young artist from “Georgia, somewhere” who came into his studio straight off the street — because she liked his movies — and said, “I want to animate.” Korkis wrote:

Ralph asked what she liked to animate and she said “funny stuff”. He assigned her to work on some of the goons in Wizards (1977) because he felt that the main characters had to be animated perfectly but with the goons it was okay for her to make mistakes on them.

“I figured if she can’t do that then she can’t do anything. So I sat her down at desk figuring she was going to fail miserably. She was one of the most hysterically funniest animators I had ever worked with actually. She was such a naturally gifted girl that anything she did on the goons was the gooniest thing you ever saw in your whole life. She became the star of the goons at the studio.”

Prior to that fateful on-the-job test, Banks had already acquired a few animation credits — notably on DePate-Freleng’s Clerow Wilson TV movies and the holiday special B.C.: The First Thanksgiving. She continued working with Bakshi into the early ’80s, animating for Lord of the Rings, American Pop, Hey Good Lookin’ and Fire and Ice.

The Night of the Living Duck

Banks’ animation skills remained in demand, and her credits include TV’s Heathcliff, The Smurfs, The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, Paw Paws, Rick Moranis’ Gravedale High, The Adventures of Don Coyote and Sancho Panda, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures and Tom & Jerry Kids, as well as feature-length projects Daffy Duck’s Movie: Fantastic Island, Jetsons: The Movie, Once Upon a Forest and The Pagemaster, as well as several Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny shorts. In the latter half of the ’90s, she animated on a few video games and worked as a character layout artist for The Simpsons. After working on King of the Hill as a character layout and animation layout artist from 1997 to 2003, Banks quietly dropped out of sight.

On Sito’s Facebook post, the girl who boldly went after that job with Bakshi is remembered by former colleagues as a quiet and reserved woman, but also a hardworking and very funny animator who would giggle over her work.

Black Animation Net produced a compilation video of Banks’ work, which you can watch here.

The movie musical event, which marks the first time Monster High will be brought to life in live action, will be available on Nickelodeon platforms globally next year.

Monster High’s strong message of inclusivity is more relevant than ever,” said Fred Soulie, General Manager, Mattel Television. “Nickelodeon shares our passion for the brand and its purpose having worked on the franchise when it first launched more than a decade ago. They are the ideal partners to bring these beloved characters and their stories to life through episodic television and the live-action television movie.”

“These classic monsters have always captured kids’ imaginations and we are so excited and proud to welcome Monster High to our brand for a new generation of kids,” said Ramsey Naito, President of Nickelodeon Animation. “We have terrific partners on board at Mattel to create original content in different formats, and, with the expertise of the Nick creative team helmed by Claudia Spinelli on the animation development side, and Zack Olin and Shauna Phelan on the live-action side, we can’t wait to showcase the comedy and adventure of these characters as they defy expectations and take on the world.”

“We could not be more excited to work with Ramsey, Claudia, Zack, Shauna, our writers and the entire Nickelodeon animation and live-action teams to introduce Monster High to a new audience,” added Adam Bonnet, Executive Producer, Mattel Television. “This property has always resonated deeply with fans and our reimagination of the franchise will focus on addressing important themes of identity and empowerment for kids today.”

The Monster High projects join other Mattel Television’s content production lineup alongside series and specials based on favorite brands Barbie, Masters of the Universe, Thomas & Friends, Polly Pocket and Fireman Sam, to name a few.

The forthcoming Monster High series and movie underscore a key element of Nickelodeon’s content strategy, to build and expand the worlds of enormously popular franchises such as Star Trek, SpongeBob SquarePants, Henry Danger, Big Nate and Real Pigeons Fight Crime, to give audiences more of what they love. Nickelodeon’s new content slate is informed by the network’s ongoing research and insights into today’s generation of kids, who are the most diverse generation ever and expect to see themselves authentically represented in media and in the world around them; want to make a positive difference in the world as they grow up; consider social media stars as their top role models, alongside their parents; and increasingly meet their much-desired need for family time by co-viewing entertainment content together.

Production on the Monster High animated TV series is overseen for Nickelodeon by Claudia Spinelli, Senior Vice President, Animation Development. Shea Fontana (Polly Pocket, DC Super Hero Girls) is serving as the showrunner. Adam Bonnett, Executive Producer and Christopher Keenan, Senior Vice President of Content Development are overseeing the animated series for Mattel.

Jenny Jaffe (Big Hero 6: The Series, Rugrats) and the writing team of Greg Erb and Jason Oremland (Princess and the Frog, Playmobil: The Movie) have been tapped to write the Monster High live-action television movie. Production for Nickelodeon is overseen by Zack Olin, Senior Vice President, Live-Action and Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. Bonnett is also overseeing the live-action movie for Mattel.

Monster High was first introduced in 2010 with a global fanbase embracing its message of inclusivity. Beginning in 2022, Mattel will be refueling the franchise and introducing Monster High to a whole new generation of kids.

  • Animation Luminary Fred Seibert Launches New ProdCo FredFilms

Animation Luminary Fred Seibert Launches New ProdCo FredFilms

Fred Seibert, the driving force behind some of the most successful animation projects of recent years, announced today he is launching a brand new production company: FredFilms. The new shingle will help meet the increased demand for premium adult and kids’ animation programming from traditional linear networks and a wide range of streaming platforms.

For this new venture, Seibert has already struck a first look deal with VIS KIDS, a division of ViacomCBS Networks International (announced earlier this morning), with additional projects expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Seibert’s achievements have established him as a legend in animation and a visionary in television branding, having discovered, cultivated and launched some of the biggest and freshest animated series across TV and streaming networks. He has served as executive producer for Pendelton Ward’s Adventure Time and Bravest Warriors (Cartoon Network / Cartoon Hangover), Butch Hartman’s The Fairy OddParents (Nickelodeon), Kevin Kolde’s and Warren Ellis’ Castlevania (Netflix) and Natasha Allegri’s Bee & Puppycat (the most-backed animated series in Kickstarter history). While serving as President of Hanna-Barbera, Seibert oversaw the development of a string of hits from The Powerpuff Girls to Dexter’s Laboratory. Seibert has also helped discover some top animation talents, including Craig McCracken, Genndy Tartakovsky, Pendelton Ward and Seth MacFarlane.

Outside animation, Seibert developed the “I Want My MTV” campaign as the network’s founding creative director, and he architected the original Nickelodeon and Nick-at-Nite branding and promotion.

Through the out-the-gate agreement with VIS KIDS (a division of ViacomCBS Networks International), FredFilms will present at least three projects to the studio with the goal of at least one being put into development. Seibert will also continue to serve in an executive producing role on two major Netflix projects – the breakout hit Castlevania, which will launch its fourth season later this year, and the cult sensation Bee & Puppycat, debuting a new iteration Bee & Puppycat: Lost in Space on Netflix soon.

“Animation is having yet another golden age, driven, as always, by new technologies. The rise of streaming platforms has given animation studios a whole new landscape to have their innovative voices and stories told. And the success that many projects are finding in streaming, both adult and kid targeted series, has re-opened the eyes of executives at linear networks to invest in animation,” said Seibert. “With that said, I thought now was the perfect time to set up a new production company in which I can focus 100% of my energies on what I truly love to do: nurture fresh talent and emerging voices, and help bring to life amazing, cutting-edge animation.”

“At VIS KIDS, we are committed to the development of new creative partnerships and deepening our relationships with talent to bring unique, fun and creative stories to life. We look forward to our partnership with Fred Seibert and FredFilms, as we further this commitment and establish VIS KIDS as an industry leader in kids content,” said Nina Hahn, Head of VIS KIDS and Senior Vice President, Production & Development, Nickelodeon International.

Seibert is currently building out his executive team and has already brought on former Crunchyroll writer/producer and seasoned graphic novel editor Casey Gonzalez as his Development Director and Sarah Kessler as Manager, Development. He is interested in hearing pitches from creators.
