NFB Short ‘4 North A’ from Toronto Filmmakers Gets TIFF World Premiere

The Toronto International Film Festival will present the world premiere of 4 North A, a new National Film Board of Canada animated short directed by Jordan Canning (Not Over Easy; features We Were Wolves, Suck It Up) and Howie Shia (Tokyo Anime Award winner Flutter, Canadian Screen Award-nominated BAM).

“The idea for 4 North A grew out of memories my mother told me about, of summers she’d spent on Amherst Island as a child. I was struck by the recurrence of animals and death in her descriptions and began connecting them to a story of her tending her father’s final days in the hospital,” said Canning, who also wrote the short. “Later, as I too found myself providing care for a beloved partner, I started imagining what it might have been like if my mother and I had been strangers in the same ward, going through these painful experiences — alone, but together.”

    4 North A

4 North A is screening in TIFF’s Short Cuts section’s Program 1, which this year focuses on “the importance of new beginnings and the many connections that give meaning to our lives.” Audiences can watch the film Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. EST through the Bell Digital Cinema (online, geo-restricted to Canada).

Synopsis: A woman sits in a hospital room, alone with her dying father. As the constant din of antiseptic hospital noises pushes her to confront her inevitable loss, she escapes into a series of lush childhood memories. With its quiet yet expressive soundtrack, and a beautiful, subdued design that shifts between the pale palette of the hospital and the lively, painterly landscapes of the woman’s memories, 4 North A is a deeply personal film about mortality, memory and discovering connection in unlikely spaces.

The short is produced by Annette Clarke, who is also exec producer Annette Clarke (NFB Quebec and Atlantic Studio) alongside Michael Fukushima (NFB English Animation Studio), and was developed in association with The Newfoundland & Labrador Film Development Corporation.

In addition to 4 North A and the just-announced World Premiere of Cartoon Saloon/Apple feature Wolfwalkers, the highly select cohort of animated projects at TIFF 2020 includes:

    • Pilar by Yngwie Boley, Diana van Houten & J.J. Epping (Netherlands/Belgium) | Short Cuts Program 2 | Two young people’s daily fight for survival in a ravaged post-apocalyptic city takes an unexpected direction in this chilling and riveting animation. Trailer.
    • Navozande, the musician by Reza Riahi (France) | Short Cuts Program 3 | Beautifully crafted by Reza Riahi, a painter and filmmaker who was the co-art director on Nora Twomey’s feature The Breadwinner (TIFF 2017), this gorgeous paper-cut animation tells a heart-wrenching story of love, war and hardship in 13th-century Persia. Trailer.
    • RKLSS by Tank Standing Buffalo (Canada) | Short Cuts Program 3 | In an intense, wild, and raw horror-fantasy, self-taught animator Tank Standing Buffalo bravely dives into his personal experiences in prolonged segregation as a young offender, using the art-form that helped him heal.
    • Tie by Alexandra Ramires (Portugal, France) | Short Cuts Program 5 | Two unusual figures on a bleak and ominous landscape gradually realize what they may have to offer each other in this surreal and entrancing animation. Trailer.
    • Scars by Alex Anna (Canada, France) | Short Cuts Program 5 | Her body is a canvas and her scars stand as testament to a part of her life. Blending documentary and animation, Alex Anna’s courageous, distinctive and poetic reflection of her mental health struggle brings to light a new story of self-harm that is both impactful and intensely intimate. • Netflix Confirms New Live-Action ‘Resident Evil’ Series

Netflix Confirms New Live-Action ‘Resident Evil’ Series

NX — Netflix’s home of all things geek — confirmed today that a scripted live-action series inspired by Capcom’s massive Resident Evil franchise is coming to Netflix. The eight-part, hour-long horror tale is being led by showrunner/writer/exec producer Andrew Dabb (Supernatural) and director/exec producer Bronwen Hughes (The Walking Dead, The Journey Is the Destination).

Building on one of the most popular, best selling survival horror video games of all time, Resident Evil will tell a brand new story across two timelines:

In the first timeline, 14-year-old sisters Jade and Billie Wesker are moved to New Raccoon City. A manufactured, corporate town, forced on them right as adolescence is in full swing. But the more time they spend there, the more they come to realize that the town is more than it seems and their father may be concealing dark secrets. Secrets that could destroy the world.

Cut to the second timeline, well over a decade into the future: there are less than 15 million people left on Earth. And more than 6 billion monsters — people and animals infected with the T-virus. Jade, now 30, struggles to survive in this New World, while the secrets from her past — about her sister, her father and herself — continue to haunt her.

Resident Evil is my favorite game of all time. I’m incredibly excited to tell a new chapter in this amazing story and bring the first ever Resident Evil series to Netflix members around the world,” said Dabb. “For every type of Resident Evil fan, including those joining us for the first time, the series will be complete with a lot of old friends, and some things (bloodthirsty, insane things) people have never seen before.”

The series hails from Constantin Film, which produced the Resident Evil feature films , with CEO Martin Moszkowicz as producer. Executive producers are Robert Kulzer and Oliver Berben for Constantin Film, and Mary Leah Sutton.

Since Capcom first debuted the genre-defining survival horror title in 1996, Resident Evil has become one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, with more than 100 million games sold worldwide. Over the course of almost 25 years, the franchise has expanded beyond games into film adaptations and theme park attractions. The Resident Evil six-film franchise (2002-2017) has collectively earned more than $1.2 billion worldwide making it the most successful movie franchise based on a video game.

  • Criterion Channel Presents Bill Plympton Starting Sunday

Home to critically acclaimed indies, arthouse movies and documentaries, The Criterion Channel streaming platform is spotlighting the works of animation icon Bill Plympton. Starting Sunday, August 29, the streamer will present a collection of seven feature films and 15 shorts.

Plympton’s wonderfully weird creations are unmistakable: the wriggly, hand-sketched style, warped humor, and endlessly shape-shifting, transmogrifying images are the hallmarks of a singularly bizarre and brilliant imagination. Originally a newspaper cartoonist, Plympton found success as a film animator when his entrancingly twisted musical Your Face received an Oscar nomination for best animated short, leading to dozens more shorts and features, regular play on early 1990s MTV, another Oscar nomination (for the short Guard Dog), and a worldwide cult following. A self-described “blend of Magritte and R. Crumb,” Plympton is a one-of-a-kind auteur of the absurd, an underground animation hero whose films hold a funhouse mirror up to the innate strangeness of everyday reality.

    Included in the collection are…

    Mutant Aliens

  • Kate Winslet, Jennifer Hudson & Glenn Close Join Baobab’s ‘Baba Yaga’

Kate Winslet, Jennifer Hudson & Glenn Close Join Baobab’s ‘Baba Yaga’

Baobab Studios announces acclaimed actors Kate Winslet (Oscar winner for The Reader; upcoming Ammonite), Jennifer Hudson (Oscar winner for Dreamgirls; upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic Respect) and Glenn Close (three-time Golden Globe winner and seven-time Oscar nominee; The Wife, Albert Nobbs) have joined previously announced lead Daisy Ridley to round out the final cast of its newest immersive experience, Baba Yaga.

Hudson is executive producer of the VR animated film, which will make its world premiere at the 2020 Venice International Film Festival on Wednesday, September 2 as part of Venice VR Expanded.

In Baba Yaga, viewers will be invited as a main character into a haunting fairytale world completely reimagined, and their choices could determine the ending of this story of love, fortitude and magic. Sometimes a force for evil, sometimes a force for good, the enigmatic witch Baba Yaga (Winslet) uses her powers to stop the villagers whose settlement encroaches upon her enchanted Forest (Hudson). When the viewer’s mother, the Chief (Close), falls deathly ill, it is up to them and their sister Magda (Ridley) to do the unthinkable: enter the forbidden rainforest, uncover its hidden mysteries and get the cure from Baba Yaga. Ultimately, every decision the viewer makes matters … perhaps even whether humanity and nature can live in balance.

Baba Yaga is a beautiful work of animation and I was honored to be an executive producer alongside my talented collaborators at Baobab Studios,” said Hudson. “While the story is rooted in classic folklore, we were inspired to bring it into modern light by focusing on environmental themes and strong female characters, themes the world needs to explore now more than ever. It was my pleasure to be part of the strong female cast alongside Daisy, Kate and Glenn.”

“Creating Baba Yaga during a pandemic was especially challenging and we are grateful to Kate, Daisy, Glenn and Jennifer for traveling with us on this unusual journey,” said Eric Darnell, the film’s director and Baobab Studios co-founder. “Each of them rose to this unique occasion with tremendous energy and passion in creating their characters and I’m proud of what we accomplished together. It is validating to have our work recognized by the Venice Film Festival and we look forward to sharing the experience with VR audiences around the globe.”

Directed and written by Darnell (Madagascar franchise, Antz) and co-directed by Mathias Chelebourg, Baba Yaga is a contemporary portrayal of the Eastern European legend breathed to life with illustrative 2D pop-up animation, as well as hand-drawn and stop-motion styles, creating a modern visual language for VR inspired by classic animation. Leveraging the studio’s award-winning animation pioneers and interactive gaming veterans, Baba Yaga blends theater, cinema, interactivity, AI and animation into a unique experience that explores themes of empowerment and environmentalism. The VR experience is executive produced by Hudson, Maureen Fan, Larry Cutler and Kane Lee.

Baba Yaga will be available exclusively on Oculus Quest later this year. As part of the 77th Venice International Film Festival/Venice VR Expanded, the experience will be accessible online to accredited viewers via an innovative digital platform that enjoys the support of Facebook’s Oculus, VRChat and VRrOOm.

Also, for the duration of the festival (September 2-12), it may be viewed in-person in the VR lounges of cultural institutions around the world as part of the Satellite Programme network. Each of these lounges will be open to the public and equipped with VR headsets, in which spectators can explore all the films in the festival’s VR program. To date, these locations include:

  • Animation Mentor’s Ultimate Guide to Animation for Beginners

Animation Mentor’s Ultimate Guide to Animation for Beginners

Considering a career in the animation industry? This guide from Animation Mentor will show you what professional animators do and share how to get started on your own animation career. It will outline the skills and education you need, as well as key steps to getting a job as a professional animator.

Animation Studios & The Animation Pipeline

Animation is a broad discipline with many facets and specialties. Before we jump in, let’s look at some of the behind-the-scenes steps that studios go through to make your favorite animated films.

First, imagine that an animation studio is a machine made up of many moving parts. In this case the parts are departments, people, and projects and together they build visual stories. You can break down the assembly line of this machine, let’s call it the Film Production Pipeline, into three large groups:

    • Pre-production is the earliest stage of the film, and involves things like script writing, storyboarding, visual development and others. It’s where a lot of the story’s building blocks are created.
    • Production is the middle stage and includes pieces like character modeling, rigging and animation. This is where much of the building happens, using those initial blocks to shape the story.
    • Post-production is the final stage, including compositing, VFX and color correction. This last step is about the details, polishing the story and getting it ready for the audience.

The studio is a collaborative environment so while people and departments have their specific areas, a decision in one area can affect all of the following teams down the line.

In this article we’re mainly focusing on the Animation part of the Film Production Pipeline, but we encourage you to learn about the other elements as well.

    What Animators Do

Animators are artists, but instead of tools like paint brushes they use the characters we see on screen to tell a visual story. It’s the animator’s job to take the script and the director’s vision and bring characters to life. If they do it well, the audience may forget that they’re watching what is essentially a digital puppet and not a living, breathing person.

Animators can be acrobats, comedians and actors, sometimes all in the same scene! Their job is to create dynamic and interesting character performances for movies, TV shows, games, and advertising.

Animators generally fall into two main categories: 2D Animators use traditional, hand-drawn techniques or modern, digital tools to tell stories. They use the core principles of timing, spacing, and appeal to bring characters to life on screen. 3D Animators use 3D software to accomplish many of the same things 2D animators do. In addition to the fundamental principles of animation, 3D animators use the advantages of modern software to push their artform to new levels. These artists are responsible for animating everything from spaceships, to dragons, to lead characters.

At their cores, 2D and 3D animators use the same principles, but different tools. Let’s look at 3D animators a little more closely…

3D Character Animators bring characters to life on screen. There are many different careers they can focus on, but here are the most highly sought-after roles:

    • Feature Film Animators work on movies and TV shows to create appealing and entertaining performances. These animators are responsible for the memorable character performances in movies like Frozen, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and How to Train Your Dragon.
    • Game Animators typically focus on body mechanics and physical performances, with an emphasis on weight and impact. They create dynamic animation that makes both the gameplay and storytelling immersive.
    • VFX Animators use varying levels of exaggeration and subtlety to animate digital characters alongside their live-action counterparts. They frequently bring superheroes, giant robots and fantastical creatures to life.

Is 3D animation a good career choice? We think so, but it’s important to make sure it’s a good fit for you! Check out ;this page for more info about salaries and industry growth. We also took an in-depth look at the animation jobs some of our students and mentors are doing, including reasons why they love their work.

Do you need a degree to get an animation job? No! The good news is that you do not need a college or university degree to get a job as a professional animator. Feature film and game studios don’t really care about degrees, they care about your skill set.

Do you have good body mechanics? Can you act a range of emotions and scenes? You highlight your skills by putting together a demo reel to show future employers. A demo reel is a series of short clips, usually 15-30 seconds, that showcase your absolute best animated work. For more specific information about what recruiters look for in a demo reel, please see tips from Animation Mentor Co-Founder Shawn Kelly, along with many other blog articles and videos on the subject.

Take a look at Animation Mentor’s Student Showcase, which is essentially a school demo reel. The Showcase highlights the best work from our students, many of whom started our program with zero animation experience.

    How to Animate for Beginners

Unlike traditional 2D animators, 3D animators use computers and technically don’t need to know how to draw to do their work. Learning basic drawing skills, however, can help you sketch and plan your ideas before taking them to the computer, which saves time in the long run. Because animators have to make their characters move, act, and react, it is helpful to understand the basics of human anatomy and movement. There are a bunch of great books we recommend, which include exercises and lessons to help you start learning right away.

Free 3D Animation Video Tutorial for Beginners: If you want to learn 3D animation for beginners, check out our free video tutorial series taught by one of our Co-Founders, Bobby Beck. Not only did he help create a school to train future generations of animators, he was also one of the lead animators on Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo! Bobby will walk you through downloading a free Maya rig and show you how to get access to a student version of Autodesk Maya’s software so you can work through the exercises and create a simple animation.

Animation Software for Beginners: Animators use many different tools to animate and while there’s no way to list every one of them here, we’d like to outline the most popular ones for you (they’re used by animation studios worldwide).

    3D Animation Software Tools

    • Autodesk Maya – If there’s a gold standard for 3D animation software it’s Maya. This is the go-to tool for professional animators and studios, and it’s crucial that new animators learn to use it. Although licenses can be expensive, Autodesk offers a free educational version.
    • Blender – Blender is gaining popularity as a high-quality but still free 3D animation tool. This software has grown in recent years to include better usability and exciting features. If the price of Maya is too much for you this is your next choice.
    • Houdini – Houdini is famous for giving artists the ability to create stunning visual effects. Like Maya it’s a bit harder to learn, but there is a free version available for students.
    • Cinema 4D – Marketed as one of the easiest tools for 3D modeling and visual effects, Houdini is good for anyone interested in enhancing live-action movies with realistic effects.
    • Autodesk 3ds Max – 3ds Max is another Autodesk software that covers several animation pipeline steps. It’s best known for game animation and modeling.

    2D Animation Software Tools

    • Toon Boom Harmony – Harmony by Toon Boom is an animation tool that can be used by both pros and new animators. We recommend it for our 2D Animation for Beginners Workshop.
    • Adobe Animate CC – Adobe created this software so it’s easy for beginners to understand, but also complex enough for professionals to enjoy.
    • Adobe Character Animator – This software’s main goal is to make facial animation as easy as possible. It does that by connecting to your webcam and animating a 2D character according to your facial expressions. While this is a great tool for beginners, we still recommend learning facial animation on its own.
    • Adobe After Effects – This software is used in the industry for character animation and character rigging.

    Best Animation Hardware

    • Drawing Tablet – A drawing tablet is a tool used to create digital sketches. This is must if you want to become a concept artist or simply want to draw out a scene for a storyboard. Wacom makes some of the better known products in this area.
    • A Good Computer – Animating scenes with complex rigs, atmospheric lighting, and multiple moving objects takes a lot of processing power. You’ll need fast memory and a good graphics card. If you are not sure exactly what to buy, high or mid-range gaming PCs should have what you need. This website has several good articles about the best computers for animation.

    ‘Lovecraft Country’: Visualizing Indescribable Monsters

***This article was written for the Sept./Oct. ’20 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 303)***

This month, horror fans got a nice treat with the debut of Lovecraft Country, the new HBO series based on Matt Ruff’s novel about Jim Crow racism taking on supernatural forms and menacing Black residents of 1950s-era Chicago. To help bring to life the creatures in the show, showrunner Misha Green and exec producers Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams relied on the team at Framestore, which provided a wide range of VFX shots for the 10-part series.

The creative studio was responsible for designing, asset building and animating the series’ Shoggoths, the supposedly ‘indescribable’ creatures from H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. They appear in two different forms as the series analyzes the horror writer’s cosmic, creature-filled world from a fresh new perspective. Framestore’s work was led by head of CG and project VFX supervisor Grant Walker, who sculpted the 3D model of the Shoggoths.

The art department’s work on the series included creating several iterations of the Shoggoths, as well as an array of other-worldly creatures and ghosts. Each of these ghosts had a gruesome visual representation of their human forms’ death, work that allowed the team to really imagine the character behind their designs.

Bringing to life creatures and ideas which might have a limited description in Lovecraft’s initial work was one of the project’s biggest challenges for Framestore. For the Shoggoths in particular, work needed to be completed for two kinds; several white ones which appear in a number of frantic, vicious scenes and a black Shoggoth which is larger and more intimidating and ultimately seen in more detail in the series. The Shoggoths aren’t particularly beautiful creatures, with translucent skin through which you can see veins and muscles and eyes dotted all over their heads and backs, as well as several different appendages which it uses to grab and devour the target of its attacks.

    Lovecraft Country
    Lovecraft Country

As Walker explains, “Many of Lovecraft’s creatures were said to be so hideous that they couldn’t be described. We had to bear in mind that ‘unfathomable’ nature but also think about the Shoggoths in a realistic way, not just making decisions about how it would look but how it moved, its behavior and how it interacted with its environment. I think we ended up with something of a departure from what was initially devised within Lovecraft’s mythos but the end result is a creature that I think will have a big impact; especially when audiences get up close and personal with it in certain sequences in the show.”

Framestore had designed and built the Shoggoth’s 3D assets ahead of the shoot so it could provide details of its size and appearance to the show’s special effects department, who created a stuffy/stand-in for the live-action production. Walker was on set to supervise the shoot, along with the project’s animation supervisor Jed Fisher and VFX producer Stephen Nixon.

    Inspired by Real Beasts

“The way we animated the Shoggoth was key to our work on this project,” says Fisher. “While we had to bring to life something that’s so inherently unnatural, the laws that govern gravity, weight and timing all still applied, so we used a lot of references from the animal kingdom in our animation. They prowl like a lion before attacking like a gorilla. It was all about animating in a way that felt right for the Shoggoth’s motivation in any given scene.”

He adds, “I can remember way back in summer 2019 my VFX supervisor telling me about this cool creature project coming in. I started doing early previs and rig tests mid June, so I’ve been on the project for 14 months, that’s a record for me. For me, as animation supervisor on Lovecraft I set the tone for how the creature moves, its characteristics, its mannerisms, the things that bring it to life. I’m able to have time before anyone else joins the project to play with ideas and movements and see what fits, build a library of motions from walks, attacks, roars — even down to subtle blinks and tongue motion.”

Creating the Shoggoth was a big challenge for Fisher and his team. “The Shoggoth is a killing machine, designed so every part of its body is a weapon,” he explains. “Powerful back legs, clawed front paws, an extra set of meta-like insect arms used to stab, row and rows of teeth like a shark, inner and outer jaw, a mace-like tail, four-pronged tongue and 60 eyes. Getting all these elements to gel in a way that made the creature feel connected and keeping it consistent across all shots was a big challenge for the animation team.”

    Jed Fisher

New Rules for a New Era

Fisher points out that Framestore used Maya, with a variety of internal and external tools built for animations needs.

“I used an external tool, animBot, extensively and I highly recommend it to any animators starting out,” he offers. He also says certain activities like screening the dailies were actually more efficient in the new work-from-home era. “We no longer have to book a screening room, but are able to share a session online at any time and look over our work together and see live draw-overs and annotations in real time,” Fisher says. “I think it has benefited the feedback process immensely. It’s a big positive to take away from what could be perceived as a negative situation.”

    Lovecraft Country
    Lovecraft Country

As well as animating the Shoggoth itself, the team had to develop and animate several other assets which it interacts with, including environments, digital police cars and doubles of several actors that encounter the creature, all of which adds to the realism of the sequences. “One of the things I felt was important on this project was the detail we put into all our models,” adds Walker. “There are moments where the filmmakers have slowed down the action of the scenes so audiences get an up-close look at the creatures. And it’s those moments that show the difference between what we expected of television 15 years ago and what is being produced now.”

Fisher also believes that the months ahead will prove to be an interesting time for companies that can think of more nimble and agile ways to continue their creative work. “We are beginning to see some interesting challenges now that some physical production has resumed. VFX and animation will play a big part as productions look to alternatives to live action shoots.”

Lovecraft Country is currently airing on HBO worldwide and streaming on HBO Max.

Free PreVIEW: ‘Spider-Verse’ Director Peter Ramsey

This Saturday, August 29 (10 a.m. PDT / 6 p.m. U.K. / 19h CET), Italy’s VIEW Conference will present its latest PreVIEW session: Peter Ramsey in Virtual Conversation with Saint John Walker. Free registration is now open for this exclusive online event, in which the Academy Award-winning director discusses his extraordinary career journey, including his highly acclaimed recent work as co-director of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

“Peter is a master storyteller,” says Conference Director Dr. Maria Elena Gutierrez. “Listening to him speak about his passion for making movies is a privilege.”

During this live session – one of a series of special PreVIEW sessions leading up to this year’s annual VIEW Conference in October – Ramsey will be in virtual conversation with Saint John Walker, Deputy Dean and Director, Escape Studios. He will also be responding to a selection of questions submitted by attendees on the VIEW Conference website or emailed to info@viewconference.it.

Register for the session at www.viewconference.it/pages/peter-ramsey

In his early career, Ramsey worked as a storyboard artist on an impressive catalog of live-action features including Backdraft, Boyz n the Hood, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Minority Report, Cast Away, Independence Day, Being John Malkovich, Fight Club, Hulk, and many others. Ramsey graduated to the role of second unit director on features including Godzilla, Tank Girl, Higher Learning and Poetic Justice.

In 2012, Ramsey made his feature directorial debut with the DreamWorks animated feature Rise of the Guardians. Together with co-directors Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman, he received an Academy Award for Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film in 2018. Ramsey is the first African American to be nominated for, and to win, an Oscar in this category. At the Annie Awards, the same directorial team picked up the award for Outstanding Achievement for Directing in an Animated Feature Production.

In his recent New York Times article, “Seeing Paradise from Behind a Dashboard,” Ramsey reflects on the influence of his formative years spent watching drive-in movies in Los Angeles, where he still lives and works today:

“Decades later, I found myself as one of the directors of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Watching shots and giving notes in our digital dailies, I constantly imagined myself as a child, sitting in a darkened theater and watching Miles Morales (who actually looked something like me, which is a whole other thing) and his friends up on screen, their moments of bonding, of heartbreak, of triumph, of heroic sacrifice. Young me, seeing that up on a gigantic screen? I know it would have been absolutely everything. I can barely comprehend how the dream I had as a child, to be part of that magic, has somehow come true.”

VIEW Conference 2020 will take place Oct. 18-23.

The highly anticipated animated title joins the previously announced Apple Original film Fireball: Visitors from Darker Worlds, a new project from acclaimed filmmakers Werner Herzog and Clive Oppenheimer, that will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on opening night.

Wolfwalkers follows Robyn Goodfellowe, a young apprentice hunter who journeys to Ireland with her father in a time of superstition and magic to wipe out the last wolf pack. While exploring the forbidden lands outside the city walls, Robyn befriends a free-spirited girl, Mebh, a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. As they search for Mebh’s missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her further into the enchanted world of the “Wolfwalkers” and risks turning into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

The Apple Original film is directed by Moore and Stewart and written by Will Collins (Song of the Sea). Paul Young, Nora Twomey, Moore and Stéphan Roelants serve as producers. Moore previously directed the Oscar-nominated animated features The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea, and Cartoon Saloon’s credits include the Oscar-nominated The Breadwinner — the latter two films also made their world premieres at the TIFF.

  • Ottawa Fest Online Uncovers Animation’s Past

The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) invites audiences to uncover something different for the 2020 online edition. This year’s four retrospectives put the spotlight on highly creative animation talent from the past and present, including work from:

    • Métis animator Terril Calder, an influential force of independent animation;
    • Mikrofilm, the dynamic and diverse Oscar-winning Norwegian studio that just celebrated their 20th anniversary;
    • Emily Pelstring, Canadian animation’s fresh new voice with a nostalgic aesthetic;
    • The centenary of the pioneering late, great Estonian animator Elbert Tuganov.

“As much as OIAF is a celebration of the here and now, and the bright lights of animation’s future, highlighting the history of animation is also an essential part of the festival,” Says Chris Robinson, Artistic Director, who chooses all the festival selections and retrospectives. “That’s what these screenings are for: to unearth animators and studios whose work may otherwise be lost to the past.”

Métis artist and stop-motion animator Terril Calder has won awards at film festivals all around the world, including Sundance, imagineNATIVE and Berlin. She has lectured and taught art through the years with various organizations that include the National Ballet School of Canada, Art in the Park program, The University of Manitoba and Indigenous Roots. Her films destabilize and haunt the viewer, tackling a number of difficult issues like identity, isolation, and the unspeakable horrors of residential schools.

The Norwegian studio Mikrofilm grew from a group of animators working in attics and basements into a powerhouse of animation. This studio’s body of work straddles industry and independence by mixing the commercial with personal passion projects, an approach that has resulted in a 2015 Oscar nomination for Me and My Moulton by Torril Kove and a Best Animated Short Film Oscar win in 2007 for Kove’s The Danish Poet. Mikrofilm’s co-founder Lise Fearnley is an OIAF jury member this year.

Emily Pelstring is as much a sound artist and performer as she is a visual artist and filmmaker. She is also a BFA graduate in Animation from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), holds her MFA care of Concordia University in Montreal, and is currently a faculty member in the Department of Film and Media at Queens University. Her interests and creative output make her a true multi-disciplinary artist. Pelstring has a film in the Commissioned competition this year and created the OIAF20 signal film.

The first in Estonia to use the term “animation,” Elbert Tuganov had made 38 internationally acclaimed puppet films by the time of his retirement in 1982. More of an architect than a poet, Tuganov was someone with a vision and a will to see it through. He was also a trailblazer until the end, helping to establish studios all over the former Soviet Union, holding workshops for children, and publishing books on what it means to bring puppets to life. For the modern viewer, watching Tuganov’s films is a call to change established attitudes.

OIAF special screenings are available to watch on-demand from September 23 to October 4, with the purchase of a pass or individual ticket, at oiaf2020.ca/watch/films.

The-Artery Builds a Neon CG Future for The Living Tombstone’s ‘Chosen’

Multi-award-winning creative company The-Artery launches a futuristic and fully CG music video for electronic rock band / YouTube sensation The Living Tombstone as part of the upcoming zero_one album.

Directed by Uri Schutzer, the music video for “Chosen” visualizes The Living Tombstone’s anonymous five band members, their identities shrouded by neon costumes, breaking out of stasis tubes — all of which are juxtaposed with glimpses of mysterious past lives. The compositions include a next-level laboratory, police chase on hovering vehicles, and more, all culminating in an epic stage performance driven by emotional lyrics, powerful vocals and an array of colorful lights.

    The Living Tombstone - "Chosen"
    The Living Tombstone – “Chosen”

“We had a vision of this grand sci-fi video but had abandoned hope of getting it thanks to coronavirus’ effect on production,” The Living Tombstone shared. “When The Artery delivered their incredible imaginative visuals, we were absolutely blown away. From the seamless environments to the body movement of the band members, it was everything we wanted it to be.”

The piece was brought to life entirely through CG along with motion capture — a major feat with the creative teams working remotely. The team used 3ds Max, Houdini, Cinema 4D, ZBrush, Kinect, Redshift, Octane, Flame and Adobe Illustrator to bring the techno-futurist vision to life.

“I fell in love with the concept immediately and I knew, from the start, that CG was the perfect and only way to get the imagery right,” explained Vico Sharabani, The-Artery Founder & Executive Creative Director. “It was also an opportunity to continue to lift our remote pipeline towards an exciting direction as well as a big step for our capabilities into virtual talent creation and virtual production improvements. We’re just as much technologists as we are artists. The motion capture elements were designed and carried out right from our own homes.”

    The Living Tombstone - "Chosen"

Schutzer added, “I wanted to create a high-end narrative in the vein of those trailers for superhero movies. My first call was to Vico whose team had the necessary talent and resources to fulfill this ambitious vision. The result is breathtaking. Whenever I share the final render to my colleagues, no one believes me when I reveal that it isn’t real people filmed in costumes.”

Represented by Warner Music Group, The Living Tombstone boasts over 1.2 billion views and 4 million subscribers on YouTube. The band’s most notable works range from the viral Five Nights at Freddy’s series to the “Party with Pinkie (Remix)” dedicated to the character Pinky Pie from the cult animated series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.

The-Artery is a full-service creative studio that specializes in creating content for brands, features films, episodic, and consumer brands across all platforms. We take a global perspective, collaborating with the best talent and the latest technologies from around the world to achieve outstanding results.
