  • ‘Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten’ to Arrive on Amazon in Spring 2021

‘Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten’ to Arrive on Amazon in Spring 2021

Genius Brands International announced the spring 2021 premiere of its new children’s animated series, Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, on Amazon Prime Video. Amazon joins Alibaba Group, which will launch the series in China on its video streaming platform for kids, Youku.

“With Amazon Prime in the U.S. and Alibaba in China, we are very excited to launch on these two premiere platforms in the two largest territories in the world,” said Andy Heyward, Chairman & CEO, Genius Brands.

Schwarzenegger commented, “Years ago, Stan Lee and I spoke of such a project, and I’m excited to finally bring great storytelling to kids around the world, which will also promote lessons of health, exercise, fitness, and anti-bullying.”

Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten (52 x 11’), an action-adventure comedy series targeting kids ages 4-7, is co-produced by Alibaba Group, Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment, and Schwarzenegger’s Oak Productions. Co-creator of Deadpool, Fabian Nicieza, who has sold over 100 million comics worldwide, is scripting the series. Schwarzenegger, who voices and inspired the look of the main character, joins multiple Emmy Award-winning children’s producer Heyward, as well as Paul Wachter, CEO of Main Street Advisors, and President of POW! Entertainment Gill Champion as executive producers.

“We are gathering steam with our latest tentpole series, Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, and are thrilled to have two of the top digital streaming partners worldwide, Amazon and Alibaba, on board as launch partners, reaching a potential global audience of hundreds of millions, as well as the talents of Arnold and the genius that was Stan,” added Heyward. “In an ever-changing children’s media landscape and current viewing patterns of children around the globe, our strategy is to offer this dynamic series where kids predominantly go to find their entertainment now. We know we have a hit on our hands and cannot wait to share it with kids everywhere.”

Synopsis: Five years ago, a tremendous superhero battle blanketed the small town of Greenvale in cosmic radiation. Shortly thereafter, a previously ordinary diverse group of boys and girls, are showing the most unusual superpowers! Their superpowers, however, rather than coming from Kryptonite or a radioactive spider, come from items in their kindergarten classroom — white glue, wooden blocks, crayons, silly putty, etc.

A very special kindergarten teacher arrives in Greenvale to train these super-kids. Arnold Armstrong knows what it is like to control superpowers, because he used to be Captain Courage, the hero whose final battle helped create these superkids! Arnold will teach the kids how to become the heroes of tomorrow, once he teaches them how to tie their shoes.

Full of action, comedy and fun, the series is based on the genius and imagination of creative icon, Stan Lee, and mixes in the important lessons of health, exercise, nutrition and anti-bullying. Just as he made a cameo in all of the Marvel movies, Lee will appear in an animated cameo in each episode, with a digitized recreation of his voice.

  • Happy Birthday Bettie! Pin-Up Queen Gets Animated in New Gas Money Series

Happy Birthday Bettie! Pin-Up Queen Gets Animated in New Gas Money Series

Celebrating the birthday of rockabilly style icon and pin-up modeling pioneer Bettie Page (April 22, 1923), Burbank-based Gas Money Pictures has announced its newest animated series in development: Everyone Loves Bettie Page!

By day, Miss Page is a shy office professional at the fashion magazine The Agency in the heart of Modern City in post-WWII 1950’s America.

Her best friend helps her with her many zany schemes, as they struggle to keep their boss, Mr. Fitz, from losing The Agency‘s biggest clients. But when her watch alarm buzzes, her horn-rimmed glasses come off, and she heads to her photoshoot, posing for iconic Bettie Page pin-ups, which Mr. Fitz unknowingly publishes in his daddy’s magazine.

Mr. Fitz loves the pin-ups, but is so distracted by his own fumbling nature that he doesn’t realize Miss Page is his dream girl, Bettie Page.

Gas Money Pics. has just wrapped up final agreements for the project and is currently finishing the first three scripts, as well as negotiating voice talent. More information will be shared soon.

Born Betty Mae Page in Nashville, Tennessee, the future Bettie Page had a troubled upbringing and difficult family life. As a teenager, Page and her sisters found a passion for glamour, doing up their hair and makeup to emulate their favorite movie stars. She also spent a lot of time at the community center, learning to cook and sew (she would later make her own bikinis and costumes for shoots). After her first short marriage and earning a BA, a chance encounter with a hobbyist photographer in 1950 led to her first pin-up portfolio. Page’s modeling career soon took off. In 1955, she won “Miss Pinup Girl of the World” and appeared as the centerfold in Playboy‘s January issue. At the height of her popularity, her willingness to toy with the sexual taboos of the 1950s even sparked a Senate Committee investigation.

Page passed away in 2008, having resurged as a figure of cult fandom during the 1980s — fueled in part by her long absence from the public eye and strongly protected privacy. In addition to her image appearing on merchandise of all kinds, the model’s distinctive look has crossed over into comics, fashion, visual art, and inspired the fashions, video trends and music of some of the biggest modern pop stars — such as Beyonce, Katy Perry and Madonna. Page even inspired the design of the BD-3000 luxury droid in Star Wars: Episode III — known as the “Bettybot” in the art department at Skywalker Ranch.

Founded by James L. Bills and Paul C. Norman, Gas Money Pictures is an animation and production studio producing UHD content for broadcast and streaming platforms. Projects include Little Blue, Hollywould, C-084 and Attack of the 50 Foot Reel. www.gasmoneypictures.com.

It turns out, the fairies need the human’s help to rescue their colony from the silver spiders. But once the secret of the fairies’ existence gets out, they face an even greater threat — luckily, Gemma and her small town are always ready to help a neighbor.

The deal was brokered by Ahn, through MBL Media (South Korea), with Tara Wynne at literary agency Curtis Brown Ltd. on behalf of Ferris. Astro-Nomical Ent., which Ahn co-founded with fellow animation veteran Chris Henderson, will be closely involved in the development and production of Nullaboo Hullabaloo as a sister company of MBL.

  • Stuttgart Organizers Dish on the Inaugural OnlineFestival.ITFS.de

As festivals, markets and conferences around the world are forced to cancel their physical gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic, the potential of virtual events is being explored like never before. The Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film recently announced its plans for the first-ever OnlineFestival.ITFS.de, taking place May 5-10. Animation Magazine caught up with the festival’s Artistic Managing Director, Ulrich Wegenast, and Dieter Krauss, Commercial Managing Director of the ITFS organizing body Film- und Medienfestival, to learn more about this exciting new chapter for the renowned German festival.

Animag: Can you tell us a little bit about how you are reshaping the festival as a digital event this year because of the unusual circumstances we are all facing worldwide?

Dieter Krauss: As cultural organisers, we and our service providers in the event industry, artists, filmmakers and creative people are particularly hard hit by the cancellation. But despite the cancellation, we want to make it possible for our fans and all those who want to become fans to attend this special cultural event, to see unique films, to participate in discussions or workshops. Since this is physically not possible at the moment, we want to raise a new format: the OnlineFestival.ITFS.de. A digital format that will give all those who stay at home during the ongoing corona crisis a digital festival feeling. In addition, we would like to offer our filmmakers a platform to give their creative and artistic achievements visibility and an audience right now.

Ulrich Wegenast: There will be freely accessible statements by filmmakers and interviews, the curated program Animated Music Video as well as new outstanding animated short films shown daily. And even events and panels will take place online, as livestreams and video conferences. The GameZone will present selected games, digital educational games, a digital GameZone Talent and the nominees for the Animated Games Award Germany 2020. Film fans have the opportunity to watch a selection of the current competition films on demand in the paid area OnlineFestival+. In the section OnlineFestival Pro, professionals have access to the submitted animations at our animated video market and can get in touch with the producers. The OnlineFestival Pro section also offers talks and video conferences – especially on the question of how the animation scene is dealing with the corona crisis.

What are some of the programming highlights for lovers of global animation and the talented filmmakers who create it?

Wegenast: At our digital Festival we are focussing on our ITFS competitions and our great and inspiring filmmakers. The OnlineFestival+ is intended to give full access to the film program: A selection of short films from the International Shortfilm Competition, Young Animation, Tricks for Kids, Trickstar Nature and selected feature films from the AniMovie competition are available here. But we will show all selected films in the different competition also at ITFS 2021 on the big cinema screen! Also, we introduce filmmakers in short videos and give them a platform to talk about their movies. On May 10 we will award the winners online! The complete competition program of 2020 will also be shown at ITFS 2021 (May 4-9) in top quality on the big screens in the cinemas.

Our Masterclasses with Benjamin Renner and other great filmmakers will be available in a Livestream at OnlineFestival.ITFS.de which will be a great opportunity to take part in.

We have seen a lot of advances made in the field of AR/VR and animation. Can you tell us how the festival is incorporating these creative projects from artists around the world?

Wegenast: In our ITFS GameZone section, we will present the current nominees for the Animated Games Award Germany. These games are characterized by an outstanding aesthetic and design, which is especially important to us as an interface between animation and games. The GameZone with its AR/VR games and interactive works lives from physical presence, from playing and interacting. In these times just a few people have VR glasses for their own private use. Therefore, the current VR and AR games that we have planned for the GameZone will not be available for testing as usual. Nevertheless we would like to introduce GameZone Talents and Local Heros and create interaction with the fans via livestream. Anyhow, next year VR and AR will have a prominent role at the GameZone, when we feature a special curated program on “Women in Games & Animation”.

The festival has a great track record of exploring the marriage of gaming and animation. What else can we expect from the 2020 GameZone?

Krauss: GameZone as the digital playground of ITFS is dedicated to various formats – from indie games to VR installations to game jams – this year, more than 50 games and VR installations were planned to be presented. But there is, in a time like this, another important section we are focussing on: Games and Education. German kids and teens and also those in other countries around the globe had to learn at home, while schools were closed during the corona crisis. This is a huge opportunity for the games and animation industry to push the digitisation in the school systems, and there is enormous potential for digital games in the area of school and extra-curricular education. As a digital platform we are dealing with the interfaces between digital games and pedagogy under the program item “Edutain Me” for over five years. Discussions held at ITFS explore which roles animation and computer games can play in the presentation and communication of content in an educational as well as extracurricular context. At our digital Festival we will have livestreams and panels at this topic, which will be very interesting and exciting.

What are your personal recommendations for those experiencing this novel event?

Krauss: Just try out what an online festival like this feels like and get involved in new experiences in this digital world. Surely, this is the first and great chance for everyone who has never wanted to make the (long) journey to our ITFS to test how exciting, varied, artistically diverse, etc. the international world of animation is. This spectrum is otherwise not to be seen outside the ITFS in Germany! This year, the ITFS comes to the people simply and directly!

Wegenast: For us, the new digital format will be a new experience like for our guests and spectators. Indeed, we already had a lot of online activities – like the Online Animation Library with more than 15,000 films available for streaming – but with the new format we will reach a new level of digitization. We will have a lot of video statements and live interviews so that we think that the audience will get in touch with the makers in a very intense way. At our livestream with talks, moderations and animation content we will create a kind of festival feeling. We are also convinced that we will reach new target groups via our OnlineFestival. And we still represent the diversity and power of animation. We are still developing the new digital format, and I am sure that we – together with the producers – will create new and more interactive content.

Your event curators go through hundreds of animation titles each year. What are some of the biggest trends you have noticed this year?

Wegenast: We have around 2.000 submissions which are selected and judged by our preselection committees. Contentwise, we see a lot of films which are dealing with the current (political) situation. A lot of films deal with topics like women’s rights. In general, most of the films show dark visions of the future. When it comes to aesthetics and techniques, we see a great variety of styles and production methods! Indeed, we see also a strong impact of the big platforms like Netflix and Amazon – but in a positive way, regarding adult topics and artistic approach. Animated series like Undone wouldn’t have been realized by normal TV stations because they are too radical and too innovative. Hisko Huelsing, director of Undone, had planned to come to Stuttgart this year. We have featured his short films like Yunkard at previous festivals, and we see a close connection between high quality short films and interesting animation series. Due to the corona crisis, Hisko won’t make it to Stuttgart, but we are working on a masterclass online!

To curate the festival, you must have contacted numerous animators and innovators around the world. How are they all dealing with the challenges of staying at home and dealing with the coronavirus pandemic?

Wegenast: Many of the animators and artists use their creativity to meet the challenges of the current situation. They deal with the crisis and its manifold, sometimes oppressive, sometimes absurd effects on everyday life in a humorous and critical way and/or focus their creative energy on new projects. For most of the creative people it is very important to stay in contact and exchange (using social media), be it in a personal way or to get feedback for their own artistic work. The response to the cancellation of festivals is completely understandable and is praised as very responsible. Thus, the offer of online festivals is also evaluated positively, even though almost everyone is aware that the personal meeting, direct exchange and human contact is sorely missed.

OnlineFestival.ITFS.de will be held May 5-10. The digital event is offering a free film streaming section as well as on-demand competition films (OnlineFestival+, 9.99€) and OnlineFestival Pro for masterclasses, market and more (19.99€, includes OnlineFestival+),

  • Oscar-Winning Director Brad Bird Joins TCM’s ‘The Essentials’

Oscar-Winning Director Brad Bird Joins TCM’s ‘The Essentials’

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) today announced that two-time Oscar-winning director, screenwriter, animator, producer and voice actor Brad Bird will join The Essentials, TCM’s popular franchise showcasing “must-see” classic films. Bird, known for films such as The Incredibles, Ratatouille, The Iron Giant and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, joins TCM primetime host Ben Mankiewicz for the new season, where they will introduce a hand-picked film each Saturday and offer commentary on its cultural significance, its influence on other films, behind-the-scenes stories and their own personal reflections.

The new season of The Essentials, which airs every Saturday night, premieres May 2 at 8 p.m. (ET).

“I love jabbering about movies almost as much as I enjoy watching them,” said Bird. “In fact, I first met Ben Mankiewicz while jabbering about movies. My wife and I were at a film festival walking briskly up a street when we wound up walking alongside Ben, who was heading to the same screening. Who knew that our casual movie-talk would morph into a wonderful TCM event? Ben is very knowledgeable about cinema, as well as being a sharp, funny person to hang around with, and a perfect host. Getting the opportunity to talk with him about indelible films on TCM was an absolute joy. My biggest challenge was figuring out which films to choose, because for each great film that I mentioned there were 10 I left out!”

“Following the return of The Essentials last season with Ava DuVernay, we feel so fortunate to be able to bring in another elite filmmaker this season as my co-host, Brad Bird,” said Mankiewicz. “Brad’s particular artistic sense works his way into every conversation we had together. He sees so many stories through the eyes of an animator, providing a rare perspective on movies we think we know well, like Casablanca, Dr. Strangelove and The Searchers. And his childlike enthusiasm for movies, animated and live action, is unparalleled and infectious. What a thrill it is to be able to bask in it this season on The Essentials.”

  • COVID-19 Chronicles: Verité Entertainment Adjusts to New Work-From-Home Model

COVID-19 Chronicles: Verité Entertainment Adjusts to New Work-From-Home Model

Like many animation-related studios and services, L.A.-based post-production audio and creative house Verité Entertainment has had to adapt to the new COVID-19 era restrictions and challenges. Founded in 2012 by René Veilleux and Donald Roman Lopez, the company provides audio for animation programs, live action, mobile and console video games globally, and also develops animated content for both domestic and international markets (under the Verité Creative banner). We caught up with Veilleux and Lopez to find how their studio is dealing with the new normal:

    Verité Studios
    Verité Studios

Thanks again for finding time to speak with Animag. OK, so how has the stay-at-home policies impacted your business?

Donald Roman Lopez: Verité Studios went “dark” shortly after the city of L.A. and state of California “stay-at-home” orders went into effect, and we’re now working with a very limited staff until the uncertainty of this crisis clears. It was a difficult decision to have to let some of our Verité family go, but we’re resilient and determined to keep things moving, until we can all get back into the studio.

René Veilleux: Although it was daunting at first and it added a few extra steps to the production process, we immediately made the adjustment to the “work from home” model, and in a way that part has been a seamless transition. We’ve managed to keep things going, and started working closely with our clients coordinating remote recording sessions with talent. We also continue to send out casting notices for upcoming projects and are working on script adaptations for our dubbing projects.

What changes have you made to accommodate your voiceover projects?

René: Our amazing voiceover talent have really stepped up. Thanks to talent being able to accommodate recording sessions from their home studios, we continue to record the VO that our animation partners need to keep their production pipelines moving! While there are a few more steps involved in preparing for the sessions to ensure the quality during the recordings and facilitating the final deliveries, thankfully all of the processes that have been put into place have helped make the recording sessions run smoothly.

Voice actor Nick Murdock records via video chat with René and Donald.
Voice actor Nick Murdock records via video chat with René and Donald.

How has technology helped you continue with your projects?

Donald: On the original series, where pre-lay recordings is what’s needed, as long as the talent has a good set up in their home studio, we’ve been able to conduct remote recordings via Zoom and Skype, with our clients and their creative teams present. The whole thing is done Brady Bunch style. All joking aside, living in the digital age has allowed us to keep things going, not only with the recordings, but communication, file sharing, cloud based storage — all of it done online.

René: There are already a number of resources available to help facilitate the recording process, and continue to ensure the quality of final audio files. We’re also working closely with some of our clients to beta test new tools and software to streamline the dubbing process even further, and we look forward to being able to bring this new technology to all of our future projects.

What are some of the projects you are working at now?

René: Unfortunately we can’t mention many of the specific projects we are working on right now, but between our service work and our creative development, we are thrilled to be working with animation studios in France, Canada, Argentina and Brazil, as well as Poland, Ireland, Singapore, Japan and one of the top animation studios right here in L.A.! In addition, we are currently prepping the dubs for multiple live-action series, and continue to work with the team at Zenimax on the hugely successful video game Elder Scrolls Online.

What is your take on the news that there’s an even higher demand for animated projects now that social distancing is making live-action production quite impossible?

René: We absolutely see an increase in demand for animated content. Even during this current crisis and uncertainty, animation studios continue to reach out to us about new projects they need voiceover and audio for, and with so many of our animation studio partners setting up and building production pipelines that can be integrated remotely, it only helps to ensure that this desire for animation content will be fulfilled.

    Voice actress Shelby Young
    Voice actress Shelby Young

How do you stay inspired and optimistic during these challenging times?

Donald: I think defining moments, like this one which we’re collectively experiencing, humble us and make us evaluate our humanity in a very profound way. When you see those incredible people in the frontlines, risking their lives, making a difference, you ask yourself whether you make a difference in this world or not. Then, we hear how the consumption of content has skyrocketed, and it’s helping people cope with their isolation. That gives you some comfort that perhaps, although not as important as saving lives, what we do brings joy to this world, especially kids and family content. That keeps us going.

René: Also, we’re very fortunate that the animation community is a wonderful, joyful, collaborative community. We love the people we work with, and we are blessed to be able to do what we do. It helps us keep faith that this too shall pass. There is no doubt the world will be different after COVID-19, but we know there will always be a place for animation and look forward to doing our part to help bring that animation to life.

  • TeamTO Taps Clélia Santi and Judith Bruneau to Tackle Growing Slate

TeamTO Taps Clélia Santi and Judith Bruneau to Tackle Growing Slate

Leading European Kids Entertainment studio TeamTO has appointed Clélia Santi as Head of Production, and Judith Bruneau as Line Producer and Talent Scout. The new positions come amid a strong 2020 slate that remains unabated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Caroline Souris, Co-Founder of TeamTO, commented, “Clélia and Judith have already become valuable and active additions to our studio, even under the current challenging circumstances. We are absolutely delighted to have such talented women managing the production line and nurturing the talent that is at the heart of TeamTO’s success.”

In her role as Head of Production, Clélia Santi will focus solely on managing the day to day activities of the studios’ productions, overseeing the multiple projects in both TeamTO’s Paris and Bourg-les-Valences’ studios. Their current slate of development and production includes TeamTO’s Presto! School of Magic and Mighty Mike, eOne’s PJ Masks and Ricky Zoom, and Silvergate’s Netflix series Creature Cases, among others.

Santi obtained a first professional master’s degree in Cinema and Technological Arts at Université Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée, followed by an Audio Production degree at the renowned Gobelins School of Animation. After her studies, she worked at ON Entertainment for seven years, on projects such as The Little Prince and Peter Pan. In 2015, she became the Production Manager of Arthur and the Minimoys (Studio 100 / EuropaCorp), followed by a role at Xilam working on their first 3D project, Oggy Oggy, before becoming Executive Producer at Blue Spirit.

Working with Santi, Judith Bruneau takes on the key role of Line Producer and Talent Scout, in charge of researching, recruiting and overseeing all new talent. Bruneau will manage the staffing needs for both studios (80% in Paris and 20% in Valence), across pre-production, production and post-production.

Bruneau returns to TeamTO with 20 years of VFX experience at the most innovative and accomplished CG studios in Europe. At Duran Duboi and Mac Guff, she was VFX Coordinator and Producer for film, video and advertising. In 2009. she oversaw the production of Duran’s feature film Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart with EuropaCorp. In 2012, she set up the Brussels office of noted studio Mac Guff, returning to France to work with TeamTO as Director of Production on Skylanders (series 2) and Ricky Zoom (series 1), as well as Superprod’s Les Blagues de Toto (Toto Trouble).

Despite the challenges faced by the COVID pandemic, TeamTO has kept all production on track and on deadline by transitioning to work-from-home in a remarkable three days. The speedy process was possible due to having already implemented the technology and protocols necessary for working remotely, in preparation for their planned move to a new studio in 2021. Additionally all of TeamTO’s production is done in house, in France, eliminating the further coordination and delays that would come from subcontracting to the Far East.

TeamTO is one of the most creatively innovative studios in the industry today, growing from a boutique Paris-based production studio in 2005 to a world-renowned creator of original, premium IPs – with a singular roster of accomplishments to its name: visually and technically ground-breaking TV series; two state of the art studios in France with 300+ full time animators; offices in three continents; a slew of international awards for its productions; a free animation school to train domestic talent for the booming industry; and unparalleled R&D division leading to revolutionary new animation software.

  • Can Animation Rescue the Live Production Shutdown?

Can Animation Rescue the Live Production Shutdown?

Andrew Lord is the founder of Manchester, U.K.-based creative production collective Flipbook Studio. Learn more at www.flipbookstudio.co.uk

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended everyday life the world over, and has done much the same across the entertainment industry. While the health and safety of our people and our communities will always be top priority, there’s no denying the impact of shelter-in-place orders and social distancing on creative studios and especially live-action productions.

While release delays to completed films such as No Time to Die and Black Widow are most prominent, the ripples were widely felt with live-action shoots that were still underway or projected to start soon. Disney and other major studios have put all of their film shoots on hold, streaming shows such as Stranger Things and The Morning Show have been delayed, and a vast array of other projects — especially those that aren’t yet ready to grab headlines — have been affected in ways large and small.

It’s nearly impossible to professionally shoot anything live action right now, given safety concerns, local restrictions and the availability of talent, crew, creatives and locations alike. At Flipbook, we’ve felt some of that pain, with our VFX projects tied to live shoots being put on hold. But the creative juices don’t have to stop flowing, and more importantly, the work doesn’t have to come to a total halt.

    Black Slide
    Black Slide

Just as some traditional sports leagues have recently embraced esports as a way to engage and connect with fans during this downtime, creatives have an opportunity to pivot and consider alternative means of production to help fill the gap. It’s a chance to make use of talents that are still available, salvage scrambled plans and productions, and try to grab some of that valuable mindshare and attention that the world is so eager to give right now.

    Versatility Is Key

It’s animation, and it can be an incredibly useful and versatile tool right now. Animation can be more time-intensive than a live-action shoot, but it’s also immensely more malleable. It can be just about anything in terms of style, form, flow, impact, and target audience. And in this particularly unique moment in time, professional animation can still be produced remotely and shared out to the world.

Case in point: Disney’s animators have produced a series of fresh Frozen shorts from home and shared them to YouTube. True, your team may not have the available animation assets of Disney, let alone the resources (who does?), but that ability to think fast and turn a dilemma into a creative opportunity should be an inspiration to studios of all sizes.

In fact, I think there’s a real opportunity here for animation to help fill the void left by shuttered live-action productions. Let’s be realistic, however. Animation won’t be a quick fix and shouldn’t be a snap decision. It needs to be carefully considered and well strategized to ensure that you can not only achieve your creative goals and/or client requirements, but also that you don’t spend a bunch of money on something that ultimately isn’t useful or compelling.

Animation also isn’t going to replace live-action shooting on a full-length feature film. Animated films take years to devise, produce, and complete — and fingers crossed, we hopefully won’t still be quarantined a few years from now. It’s also not ideal for high-end episodic TV for similar reasons, given the amount of time and resources it would take to produce episodes or even a full season.

Instead, now is the ideal time to harness animation for shorter-form content. On the entertainment side of things, that means short films and content designed for mobile and social media. Consider a prequel story, a character exploration or something truly distinctive and unique that retains the flavor of your franchise or creation.

    Kevin the Carrot
    Kevin the Carrot

Animation isn’t just for kids: it’s incredibly flexible and can be harnessed to capture any vision you can dream up. It really comes down to scale. An animated project with an extensive amount of characters, detailed backdrops, and lots of assets will only extend the turnaround timeline. Consider honing the idea down to something simpler and more achievable that can be completed by a studio with a remote workflow.

One prime example is the campaign produced by Channel 4 for the second season of The End of the F***ing World. To build up chatter and excitement for the live-action series, Channel 4’s in-house agency 4Creative devised a series of simple animated shorts that explored various fan theories around the story. That’s an inventive way to do something around a live-action production without overlapping or replacing it in any way.

Another option is brief social content meant to appeal to the potentially massive online fan bases that follow brand and franchise accounts, creators, actors, and other celebrities. V+ Animation recently made a name for itself by creating custom animation for Will Smith’s Instagram account, which led to work for other celebrities as well as music videos for the band Breathe Carolina. Small, but well considered animation projects can generate ample word of mouth and command viewers’ attention, all while engaging with fans in unexpected ways.

    Harrison Spinks
    Harrison Spinks

    Commercial Options

When it comes to commercials, there’s potentially even more flexibility to use animation to realize existing treatments without drastic changes. At Flipbook Studio, we’ve been approached by many clients in recent weeks that had pieces lined up to shoot right about now, but they’ve been scuttled by the impact of the pandemic. Those campaigns don’t have to be lost entirely; you can still promote brands and products without live-action footage, all while maintaining momentum with your client.

If the original campaign doesn’t necessarily translate well to animation, then an experienced creative studio can help identify the key messages and devise ways to better suit them to the wide palette of animation. And there are ongoing benefits too: after that initial outlay, you will have assets and animation that can be reused down the line for future projects, whether it’s additional commercials or short films, mobile and social content, still images, etc.

Animation also offers a level of control that a live-action shoot simply cannot match. There’s no need for costly reshoots for an animated project: every element can be tweaked, swapped and changed on command. You can bring an inanimate object to life in new and inspiring ways, or control a lifelike character in ways that physical performers cannot match. Animation can make the unbelievable believable, and you have total command over the finished product.

It’s a challenging time for creative industries, with a seemingly endless number of projects paused, compromised, or canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. But this moment in history is exactly the right opportunity for creatives to rise to the challenge, be nimble, and come up with alternative means of getting the job done amidst unique circumstances.

Animation isn’t a one-size-fits-all, quick-fix solution to every live-action production problem, but its flexibility and wide-open creative possibilities make it a strong candidate for meeting your myriad needs — and giving people something to talk about in the process.

New ‘No Sass’ Kids’ Streamer Yippee Launches with Free Trial

Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, public opinion polls show American parents are currently experiencing fear and anxiety about how to entertain and educate their children while managing the stressful demands of life. Yippee, a new video streaming service for families with kids ages 2-10, offers a solution for boredom with a promise that its content is wholesome, safe and attitude-free. Yippee offers more than 1,000 hours of programming through a competitively-priced subscription model encouraging viewers to “Watch Something Good.”

“Yippee was built by parents for parents. There are no ads, algorithms or attitudes, and the shows on our platform are safe and actually fun,” said Brandon Piety, Head of Yippee. “Our platform is unique because we have world-class animated shows like VeggieTales as well as original content and curated YouTube shows — and we’re proud to release the first-ever car show for kids called Backseat Drivers.”

Among its offerings, Yippee has announced an exclusive partnership with VeggieTales, an animated program featuring singing vegetables that boasts being the “best-selling home entertainment series of all time.” The animated program has sold 175 million videos, 16 million books, and 235 million music streams, and Yippee will exclusively air a new original episode each month.

The streaming start-up has also licensed Madeline, a beloved and classic cartoon series first developed by NBC that follows the adventures of a red-haired Parisian girl, and is adapted from the perennially bestselling book series. In addition, Yippee has cultivated dozens of unique cartoons and unscripted shows that will appeal to kids who are interested in crafts and cars, animals and adventure, and much more.

The Yippee team believes their streaming service is exactly what parents need right now. Unlike handing children an iPad and letting them surf YouTube, Yippee’s values-based content requires no parental review. Additionally, the company believes the service can help facilitate wholesome family time while many are isolated due to stay-at-home orders.

Yippee is available via Roku, AppleTV, Fire TV, Samsung TV, as well as iOS and Android apps. In order to serve as many families as possible during this difficult time, the company is currently offering a free 7-day trial and 50% off the first two months with the promo code “NOSASS.”

  • Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation VR Short ‘Lutaw’ Sets Sail Via Tribeca Cinema360

Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation VR Short ‘Lutaw’ Sets Sail Via Tribeca Cinema360

As part of Tribeca Film Festival’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, the prestigious festival has made a historic pivot to debut select films online. Making its world premiere among these offerings is Lutaw, a virtual reality film now playing in the free-to-access Cinema360 immersive program presented in partnership with Oculus (April 17-26).

Lutaw takes viewers into the world of Geramy — a scrappy, budding inventor, who is trying to find a better way to commute to school. Based in the Philippines, this story highlights the students that swim between the small islands in order to travel to the nearest elementary or high schools in their remote areas. The plot is inspired by the Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation, which has provided over 4,600 yellow boats to school children to better access education across the Philippines, an archipelago composed of 7,107 islands.

The VR short was created with partners through the Oculus VR for Good Creator’s Lab program with Yellow Boat of Hope. As COVID-19 brought stay-at-home orders to the crew, the project was completed through remote collaboration with team members at Flight School Studio, Chibot VR, Oculus and Yellow Boat contributing from locations around the globe.

The film is directed by Samantha Quick and produced by Michaela Holland with animation by DJ Babylon and Juan Gabriel Fernandez. Spatial audio was created by Matt Hauser and Dan Teicher of Immersive Music and Sound, with additional compositions from Filipino composer Teresa Barrozo. Lutaw also features the painterly and vibrant work of Taiwanese art director Ruby Wang of Flight School Studio.

“It has been an honor to help Lutaw’s creative team and Yellow Boat bring this beautiful story to audiences,” said Wang, who has previously created lush visuals and inventive concepts for innovative game and VR projects such as Island Time VR, St. Jude Hall of Heroes and Dream Academy. “The art style is inspired by the beautiful and courageous people in the Philippines, helping children get to school safely.”

The short’s helmer, Samantha Quick, is an immersive director and creative technologist working in interactive media. She is one of the most prolific VR content creators working, with over 100 bylines in The New York Times; she has also created work for Al Jazeera, Sotheby’s and Doug Liman.

Producer Michaela Holland is an Emmy, Webby and Sheffield Doc/Fest award-winning immersive storyteller — a creative director, producer and project manager who combines experimental content with traditional mediums. Her work has been featured by TIME, Forbes, The Guardian and more.

  • Sheridan Named ACR’s Top Animation School Outside US for 2nd Year in a Row

Sheridan Named ACR’s Top Animation School Outside US for 2nd Year in a Row

For the second consecutive year, Ontario’s Sheridan College has been named the No. 1 animation school in the world in Animation Career Review’s 2020 international rankings of schools outside the United States.

Animation Career Review surveyed members of 185 institutions and conducted its analysis by assessing academic reputation, admission selectivity, depth and breadth of the program, value as it relates to tuition and indebtedness and, for the first time, employment data was considered.

Sheridan offers a competitive Honours Bachelor of Animation degree – a four-year, hands-on program that emphasizes classical principles of animation in a variety of forms, including 2D digital, 3D and stop motion – as well as post-graduate certificates in computer animation, visual effects and digital creature animation. For more than 50 years, animation has been a cornerstone of Sheridan’s academic programming.

“We’re incredibly honoured to have our degree recognized in this way,” says Ronni Rosenberg, Dean of Sheridan’s Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design. “Because of its stellar reputation, our Animation program attracts top talent from around the world. Our dedicated and skilled faculty bring enormous industry experience to the classroom. And of course, our graduates go on to accomplish great things.”

Graduates of Sheridan’s esteemed animation program have gone on to work with globally renowned studios, including Disney, Pixar, Nelvana and Guru. In February 2020, alumnus Dean DeBlois (Animation ‘90), writer and director of the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature category for the third and final installment of his series.

In 2019, Sheridan alumna Domee Shi (Bachelor of Animation ’11) was awarded the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for her directorial debut, Bao, at the 91st Academy Awards. She became the fifth Sheridan graduate to win an Oscar.

Graduates of the post-grad Computer Animation or Digital Creature Animation programs are eligible for advanced entry into the Master of Arts in 3D Animation program at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in Dún Laoghaire.
