  • Netflix & Production I.G Debut Pioneering 4K Anime Short ‘Sol Levante’

Netflix & Production I.G Debut Pioneering 4K Anime Short ‘Sol Levante’

An intriguing addition has been made to the growing catalog of anime content from Netflix, with the debut of new short Sol Levante. Produced in collaboration with renowned Japanese animation studio Production I.G and the Netflix Creative Technology team, the film is one of the world’s first hand-drawn 4K HDR projects and took two years to complete.

The film combines fine traditional animation artistry with cutting edge creative technology to tell the story of a young warrior searching for a sacred place said to fulfill wishes in a world ever wary of angering ancient spirits.

“4K and HDR is like getting wings and an engine to see a new horizon where a new era is rising,” said Sol Levante‘s director Akira Saitoh. “We keep challenging ourselves and being innovative for the future.”

Hisashi Ezura, Animation Technical Director on the film, added, “For animators, 4K and HDR gives us a canvas of a new creative era, where we can draw and animate new ideas. I hope we continue to innovate production, by adopting new expressions and equipment, and not simply follow existing animation technologies.”

    [Screen Shot 2020-03-24 at 16.54.19]

The pioneering nature of Sol Levante meant that the creative team had to adapt and adjust at every stage of production. Ezura had to adjust the pen pressure to find the correct line thickness when outlining character drawings. Down the road, the film’s immersive Dolby Atmos audio required the expertise of sound mixer Will Files, sound designer Matt Yocum and composer Emily Rice when it came to mixing the music.

Netflix’s philosophy is that technology enhances storytelling and frees creators to focus on making great art beyond the bounds of traditional creative processes, and the company intends to release the raw materials used in Sol Levante for other artists to download and experiment with.

You can learn more about the film’s creative process in the making-of video below.

Since 1999, director Saitoh has worked with Production I.G, specializing in visual effects and pioneering the space since the dawn of digitized animation. After becoming a freelancer in 2002, she has helped bring works such as Mamoru Oshii’s Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, The Sky Crawlers and other animated series to life. Her expertise spans visual concept work, VFX and grading for numerous live action or 3D CG projects. Since 2013, Saitoh has expanded into directing and editing shorts and features.

Disney Announces Paid Furlough for Non-Essential Employees
Full statement from a company representative: The COVID-19 pandemic is having a devastating impact on our world with untold suffering and loss, and has required all of us to make sacrifices. Over the last few weeks, mandatory decrees from government officials have shut down a majority of our businesses. Disney employees have received full pay and benefits during this time, and we’ve committed to paying them through April 18, for a total of five additional weeks of compensation. However, with no clear indication of when we can restart our businesses, we’re forced to make the difficult decision to take the next step and furlough employees whose jobs aren’t necessary at this time. The furlough process will begin on April 19, and all impacted workers will remain Disney employees through the duration of the furlough period. They will receive full healthcare benefits, plus the cost of employee and company premiums will be paid by Disney, and those enrolled in Disney Aspire will have continued access to the education program. Additionally, employees with available paid time off can elect to use some or all of it at the start of the furlough period and, once furloughed, they are eligible to receive an extra $600 per week in federal compensation through the $2 trillion economic stimulus bill, as well as state unemployment insurance.

  • LA Animation Festival Launches Distribution Label

LA Animation Festival Launches Distribution Label

The Los Angeles Animation Festival (LAAF), L.A.’s independent animation festival, is launching a new distribution label specializing in international animation, to be released on Blu-ray, DVD, select theaters, On-Demand and streaming channels. The films are distributed under the LAAF brand through the newly formed company FilmFest Distribution (www.filmfestdistribution.com).

FilmFest is the brain-child of LAAF Co-Founder Miles Flanagan and veteran distributor Nadav Streett of Rising Sun Media.

“As a festival we receive so many wonderful films every year — films that, however amazing, simply never seem to gain wider releases,” explains Flanagan. “After over a decade of learning about distribution and getting to know some of the best people in the business, it became a no-brainer for me that these works should be distributed, marketed correctly and given as wide a release as possible. Helping bring in money and attention to these wonderful filmmakers is also a big plus.”

Getting attention is something the filmmakers agree is important. Trash Panda director and recent graduate Alec Baumzweig feels “it gives us a voice and an opportunity to be really seen, which is one of the most important things for those of us trying to break into the industry.”

Streett adds, “LAAF is one of the most forward thinking animation brands in the market. Bringing films that normally are only seen on the festival circuit to the marketplace is a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved.”

The premiere release is the feature-length compilation The Best Of LAAF: Volume 01, presenting 10 of 2019’s LAAF award-winning animated shorts (www.laafest.com). Produced by Flanagan and LAAF Co-Founder John Andrews, the collection is an eclectic mix of international animation, styles and stories — a unique showcase of the caliber of talent the festival attracts.

“Miles and I have curated a special selection of films in Volume One of this series. Films that will both entertain and move an audience,” says Andrews.“The LAAF banner offers so many great opportunities for the filmmakers involved.”

The Best of L.A.A.F Volume 1 from Rising Sun Media on Vimeo.

The filmmakers included are excited about this unique endeavor. Siti Lu’s very personal short On the Road was based heavily on her own family experience and she hopes “people will see a little of themselves” in this beautifully crafted comedy-drama.

Sylvia is a stop-motion film about a little girl with imaginary friends who is forced to face the burden of her imagination when tragedy strikes,” says director Meirav Haber. “I put my heart into this film and I am really proud to be able to share it with millions of other animation lovers around the world through this beautifully curated compilation.”

Race to the Finish director Nikki Williams, who was inspired by her sister’s story of swimming for college, is equally thrilled, “It feels amazing to see her story being shared in this incredible collection.”

Stephan Leeper, director of the student short Fire Flower understands how distribution can positively affect these very personal films, “After five long years of production, having our film distributed by LAAF through FilmFest will increase our audience exponentially. It’s a game-changer for all of us.”

With a full slate of 10 animated feature films and a Best of LAAF – Vol. 2 to be released this year, Streett and Flanagan have their hands full. “Yes, it’s been busy!” Streett agrees. “We have so many great films coming out this year from all over the world — from the Philippines, Iran, Russia and even Beverly Hills. Thanks to the Los Angeles Animation Festival, there’s an abundance of quality work that is screaming out to be distributed.”

“I’m just glad we have an opportunity to give back,” Flanagan says. “Nadav and I have been doing this kind of work for years and these wonderful films and talented filmmakers can really benefit from our experience and connections. I’ve spent years helping out large corporations. I think it’s time now to help others.”

Featuring additional work directed by Jackie Lay, Trilina, Jeremy Mowery, Tony Wisneske and Elizabeth Lewis The Best Of LAAF: Volume 01 is available now on Amazon (U.S. and all English-speaking territories). A DVD release will follow later in the year.

Illumination/Universal’s ‘Rise of Gru,’ ‘Sing 2’ Pushed Back to 2021

Having last week pulled the upcoming latest installment of top-grossing animation franchise, Minions: The Rise of Gru, from its summer release window, Illumination/Universal has announced new dates for its next two flicks for next year.

Illumination’s Paris studio Mac Guff has been temporarily closed due to the coronavirus lockdown in France.

Minions: The Rise of Gru is now slated for July 2, 2021, taking Sing 2‘s slot and bumping the musical animal sequel to December 22, 2021.

As a result, Universal has removed the film adaptation of three-time Tony-winning musical Wicked from its Christmas 2021 window and is determining a new release date. The studio previously announced shifts for tentpole releases: the offshore debut of new James Bond installment No Time to Die is on hold and the new Fast & Furious, F9, is pushed to April 2, 2021 (Easter weekend).

Sony announced delays to its release slate, including hybrid sequel Peter Rabbit 2, earlier this week.

Chintis Lundgren Animates “One for the Ages” for Sparks

Ground-breaking pop pioneers Sparks – Los Angeleno brothers Ron and Russell Mael – have turned to Estonian animation director Chintis Lundgren to create the video for their new single “One for the Ages,” available to watch now on YouTube.

Renowned for her acclaimed, award-winning short film Manivald, Lundgren runs her own animation studio Chintis Lundgreni Animatsioonistuudio and is co-founder of Adriatic Animation, an animation studio based in Zagreb, Croatia. The video follows a protagonist who dreams of creating something that could one day be considered “one for the ages.”

Each image is hand drawn on A5-sized printing paper, photographed with a Canon EOS 400 D digital camera with a 50mm prime lens, colored in Photoshop and edited in Adobe Premiere. Working to a tight timeline Lundgren teamed up with animator Draško Ivezić for the project.

“Draško has created a digital pencil that has pretty much the same kind of line as my analogue one, so I’m able to combine his digital drawing with my analogue ones without there being any noticeable difference,” said the director.

“Who among us doesn’t feel the need to be involved with ‘One for the Ages,’ either in a creative endeavor, a personal relationship, or as the next Michael Jordan?” said Ron Mael.

The song is taken from Sparks’ forthcoming album A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip, due on Friday, May 15 on digital platforms with the release date for CD, vinyl and cassette now set for July 3. (Available for pre-order now.)

“One for the Ages” isn’t Sparks’ first animated outing. In 2017, the group teamed up with BAFTA Cymru-nominated animation and puppetry director Joseph Wallace for the multi-award-winning video for their single “Edith Piaf (Said It Better Than Me).” Watch it here.
