  • This One Thing I Do: Josh Selig Shares His Wisdom with Young Animation Students

    Dear Mister Selig,

We are the animation history students of Falmouth Junior High. We aren’t sure if you’re still alive but, if you are, can you please answer some animation questions for us? If you don’t want to answer them or if you’re not still alive, can you please forward this email to Keith Chapman? (He was our first choice, but we couldn’t find him and we tried really hard.) Anyways, most of us liked your show Wonder Pets! when we were little kids, especially the duck Ming-Ming who couldn’t talk right. She was funny, but one kid in our class had to go to a speech pathologist for about one-and-a-half years because of it. Hahaha! If you don’t mind, we really need your answers by Tuesday because we have to do an oral report about you (or Keith Chapman).

     The Animation Gang

    Wonder PetsWonder Pets

    Dear Animation Gang,

First off, thank you for your lovely email. Since I am, at least for now, still alive, I thought it best to reply to you quickly in case things should change on that front.

I’m sorry you couldn’t find Keith Chapman. He is most likely tending his garden and sipping Rémy Martin Louis XIII in Monaco — a small European country which, last I heard, he now owns. I will send him your best regards.

Yes, I would be happy to answer your animation questions. Having just binge-watched The Crown, I find myself with time on my hands as well as a renewed appreciation (or, as the Queen would say, “appre-see-a-tion”) for letter writing. So, please send along your questions posthaste.

    Mister Selig

    Dear Mister Selig,

Thank you for replying to us. We are really psyched! (^o^)

It is good to know you are still alive. Congratulations. (Maybe you should update your Facebook page to let other people know? Just a suggestion.) Anyways, here are our five animation questions. Please fill in the blanks by Tuesday when our oral report is due. And swear you won’t be late or we won’t have anything to say. We will just be standing there. By the way, we cannot pay you for this :o)

Animation Gang: How come some animation shows are really good shows and some animation shows are really bad shows?

Josh: Good shows are good shows because they are well-loved. This is also true for a good meal, a good haircut or a good dog. Things that are well-loved are handled with a particular care and attention to detail that things that are not well-loved simply never get. Good shows always come from the heart of a show creator — a man or a woman who has an idea that he or she needs to share — and then they are nurtured by a small army of devoted artists and producers who spend years fussing over every walk cycle, the design of each hand or the way an actor says a particular word. If this delicate process goes well (and it rarely does), then the love that this team feels for their show is also felt — I don’t know exactly how — by the kids who watch the show. For these children, the show’s characters become as beloved as their close friends and family members. In my view, that is what a good show is.

Bad shows, on the other hand, rarely come from individuals. They’re usually stitched together in conference rooms by smart and enterprising people who hope to sell things — almost anything — to children. And the more people who are in the room, the less likely it is that their show will be any good. Since not much passion or love goes into the raising of these shows, they (unsurprisingly) rarely grow up well. The end result is often a show that’s a bit of a Frankenstein’s monster: It has good parts harvested from good people, but nothing quite fits together, so the show walks a little funny and may frighten small children.

Animation Gang: We had a guest speaker last week who said there aren’t any new ideas left. That totally freaked us out. Do you think there are any new ideas left?

Josh: Rest assured, there are still many wonderful new ideas left. Ideas are everywhere. Shows are everywhere. Your breakfast can become a show. Your trip to an alpaca farm can become a show. Even your nose can become a show. The world’s a messy garden of ideas, and they’re all growing right towards you at every moment. You just need to reach out and pluck one. (Kids, of course, are better at this than adults, and I’ve long believed that human beings peak at age four.) The people who struggle the most with ideas are the ones who treat them like rare bugs that they must hunt down, capture and impale with a pin. These folks try too hard, and they think too much. This puts them outside of the garden, where it is rather parched. When you know you are welcome in the garden, you will never be short of new ideas. And, rest assured, every person — especially the Animation Gang — is welcome in the garden.

Animation Gang: Which person influenced you the most? (This can be a real one or a made up one like Pokémon.)

Josh: Many years ago, I worked at Sesame Street. There was a producer and director there named Lisa Simon. She was very strong and she was very gentle. She believed in me long before I believed in myself. And when I struggled, she did not abandon me. Lisa’s life and work made a big impression on me and so many others. She passed away a few years back, but I still think of her almost every day. You would have liked her a lot. And she would have liked you.

Animation Gang: What parts of your job do you not like so much?

    Josh:

    • Birthday parties in conference rooms.
    • Notes that do not help shows.
    • Pitching while eating.
    • Any show in which the characters laugh for no reason except that it’s the end of the episode.
    • Show bibles without pictures.
    • Explaining jokes.
    • Anything more than two drafts and a polish.
    • Comedy that’s based on physical pain.
    • The brevity, anonymity and nastiness of social media.
    • The need to adapt to changing technologies whilst believing in my heart that humans will never improve upon the hand-written letter or the candle.
    • When people with power are unkind to people without power.
    • Airplane food.
    • Losing my phone.
    • Talking about money.

Animation Gang: What parts of your job do you like the most?

Josh: This one is easy. Sometimes, it all just goes right. The show that you create matches the era that you live in. And the team that you assemble is uniquely qualified and motivated to bring that particular show to life: The writers, the artists, the composers, the producers, and the broadcasters. They all just get it, and so do the kids. I cannot say I have experienced this often — something always seems to get in the way — but I have experienced it. And when it happens, it’s not only my favorite part of my job, it’s my favorite part of my life. The act of creating a good show (or film or song or pinch pot) is an act of God. Not every time, but sometimes.

Well, Animation Gang, it’s late here in New York and we need to take the dogs out. Good luck with your oral report on Tuesday. If you decide to make your own shows one day, please try and do so in your own way. You need not follow me or Keith Chapman or anyone else. And try not to care too much what other people think of you or your work. Too many hopeful beginners have gone silent out of fear, or because others have been cruel. Forgive them, for they know not what they do. Just make your things and share your things and your lives will be forever full. I swear 🙂

Baby Octopus Options Female-Led Fantasy ‘Nadya Skylung’ for Animation

Baby Octopus, the multi-genre children’s entertainment company founded by Diana Manson and Megan Laughton, is expanding its portfolio of female-led fantasy animation series, optioning the rights to the series of Nadya Skylung books and signing a development deal for television and merchandising with author Jeff Seymour.

Booklist described the titles as: “A brilliantly characterized debut. A stunning read that explores ideas of what bravery means through rich writing, vivid descriptions and a strong voice. Readers will be eager to explore this breathtaking and dangerous steampunk world set in the sky.”

Development on the 26 x half-hour series for tweens will reunite Baby Octopus with Auckland, New Zealand-based animation company Toybox, co-producers of hit YouTube Kids show Sherwood. The companies will work with Seymour to bring the Nadya Skylung stories to life.

“We were enthralled by these books and the strong character of Nadya as soon as we read them and this is just the type of distinctive, multi-layered and powerful project we love,” said Baby Octopus co-founder Manson. “Jeff has created an absorbing and complex world with dramatic ecological airships and tense humanistic themes that are ideal for the screen. We can’t wait to work together with Jeff and our colleagues at Toybox, whose cinematic style of animation for television will bring his incredible vision to life.”

The deal was brokered by Danielle Burby at Nelson Literary Agency and Wayne Alexander of Alexander, Lawrence, Frumes and Labowitz, LLP representing Jeff Seymour; and Jane McGregor, representing Baby Octopus.

Sherwood, created by Manson and Laughton, debuted on YouTube Premium in March 2019. The retelling of the Robin Hood legend is set in a plausible future after catastrophic climate change, following 15 year-old Robin and her friends’ battles with the wealthy Upper City in their efforts to overcome inequality and fight for justice. The voice cast includes Anya Chalotra, Tyler Posey, Jamie Chung, Rachel House, Neneh Conteh, Ade M’Cormack, Darrill Rosen, Aneurin Barnard and guest starring Joseph Fiennes. Sherwood has been nominated for two Kidscreen Awards this year.

Baby Octopus was established to produce quality children’s entertainment in all genres. Current book-based properties include Chu, the preschool picture book series by global best-selling author Neil Gaiman’s, illustrated by Adam Rex. In addition to the central slate of publishing titles, Baby Octopus continues to develop original IP and will be making announcements on these projects soon. The team works with Sesame Workshop and Sesame Studios regularly on musical live-action and classic educational shorts.

Prior to setting up Baby Octopus, Manson and Laughton worked on Max & Ruby, airing continuously on Nick Jr. since 2003; Peter Rabbit; Olivia; The Mr Men and Little Miss Show; Noddy and Gaspard and Lisa.

Anima Spotlights Scandinavia & Finland, Melusine Studio

Organizers of Belgium’s Anima – The Brussels Animation Film Festival 2020 (Feb. 21-Mar. 1) have announced that the Oscar-qualifying event will continue its annual tradition of spotlighting one or two European countries with dual focus on Scandinavia and Finland this year.

Anima will reflect on the countries’ concentration on producing quality animated feature films for children. The festival will hold an in-competition screening of Anders Matthesen and Thorbjorn Chistoffersen’s Checkered Ninja — an up-tempo adventure with a great story about friendship, and a touch of social criticism. The Palace cinema will also host a retrospective of children’s films, including Gordon & Paddy, Next Door Spy and Rita & Crocodile.

    Checkered Ninja

In addition, the Anima audience will have the opportunity to discover what makes independent filmmakers from the North tick through a panorama of four short film programs for adults, entitled Northern Lights. Whether inspired by real events, first-hand accounts or funny and original invented stories, these directors have tackled the subjects with open minds and a bold artistic vision. One of them, Swedish filmmaker Jonas Odell, renowned in the industry for co-founding studio FilmTecknarna, prolific commercial and music video credits, and his multi-award-winning Never Like the First Time, will be visiting the professional days to present his new studio The Chapel Films.

The Scandi-Nordic focus will wrap up with the preview screening of Danish filmmakers Anders Morgenthaler and Mikael Wulff’s latest feature, Monty and the Street Party, co-produced by Belgium’s Caviar Films, which will close the Festival by giving the Anima 2020 audience one last opportunity to delve into the crazy creative workings of their minds, in the presence of the film’s Belgian production team.

Anima will also be celebrating one of the little countries that plays a big role in the European animation industry, Luxembourg, with a closer look at sibling outfits Mélusine Productions and Studio 352. Founded 20 years ago by Stéphan Roelants, who is still at the helm, these two studios have produced or co-produced a dozen of the most popular European features of recent years, like Ernest & Celestine, Song of the Sea, The Swallows of Kabul, The Breadwinner, TV series, shorts, documentaries and more.

They currently have five feature film projects on the go (Molesworth, Slocum, Le Sommet des dieux, Kensuke’s Kingdom and Wolfwalkers) that founder and studio head Roelants will talk more about in the Mélusine, a (co)production model conference.

    Zero Impunity

Roelants will also discuss his editorial line, which is based on serving original scripts and quality visuals and content, as well as presenting a preview screening of a film that takes a step off the beaten track of the Anima Festival: the animated documentary denouncing rape used as a weapon of war and its impunity, Zero Impunity. The film, directed by a trio — the Blies brothers and Denis Lambert — is emblematic of the studio’s position.

The majority of the feature films from these two Luxembourg studios are set to be screened at Flagey or the Palace for this special tribute.

TeamTO, M6 & Canal+ Conjure Animated Comedy ‘Presto! School of Magic’

Leading European kids entertainment companies TeamTO, M6 and Canal+ are pleased to announce their partnership on Presto! School of Magic (52 x 11’), an animated comedy series based on the international hit feature The House of Magic from nWave and StudioCanal. Together with Belgian co-production partners Panache & La Compagnie Cinématographique, the agreement provides a greenlight for the series and a prestigious platform for the show in France.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be a part of this magic-filled show, and to begin our first collaboration with TeamTO. We love shows that encourage kids to discover their talent and develop their potential. Presto! School of Magic has both positive values and a heart — a perfect combination!” said Lila Hannou, Head of Children’s Programs, Groupe M6.

Canal+ Director of Children’s, Audrey Brugère, added, “Following the success of Angelo Rules and My Knight and Me, we are delighted to once again partner with TeamTO on Presto! School of Magic, and to have participated in its development. The series fits perfectly within the projects we choose for our channels, dealing with the everyday issues kids face in a world of imagination and humor. The series is a beautiful extension of the universe created in The House of Magic feature film, co-produced by Studio Canal.”

Presto! School of Magic features a band of talented and curious kids who dream of becoming magicians. Star students Dylan and Lisa cannot believe how lucky they are to be part of the new school. Lorenzo, a retired magician of international renown, and his nephew have turned their old mansion into Presto! School of Magic, where Lisa, Dylan and fellow aspiring magicians Nica, Violet and Vincent, learn the tricks of the trade. They all have different reasons for attending the school – but they have one thing in common: a passion for illusion, conjuring and the art of magic!

The series and its creatives come to the table with strong credentials for success: Presto! School of Magic was a 2017 Official Selection for Cartoon Forum, which has twice honored the series’ producer, Corinne Kouper, as Producer of the Year (in 2010 and 2015). Kouper is also the recipient of two Emmy Awards and one Pulcinella Award in her long career of creating hits such as Mighty Mike, Angelo Rules, Yellowbird the movie, Zoe Kezako and Rolie Polie Olie.

“From Houdini to Shin Lim – the recent winner of America’s Got Talent – we know that magic is timeless, mesmerizing and especially intriguing for kids,” commented Kouper, SVP Development & Production at TeamTO. “This fun series will introduce children to what lies behind the curtain through the eyes of our heroes. And like in Fame and other shows that allow young people to discover their hidden talents, Presto! School of Magic shows what it takes to become a great magician.”

“Aardman lovingly produce stories with warmth, personality and humor, so we are truly delighted that, following the huge success of The Farmer’s Llamas, the next project in our continuing relationship is another wonderful Shaun the Sheep special,” said Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Program Acquisition.

The half-hour special follows Shaun as his seasonal excitement turns sour when a farmhouse raid to get bigger stockings for the flock leads to baby lamb Timmy going missing. Can Shaun get Timmy back before he becomes someone else’s present? Prepare for a “Santastic” adventure as everyone learns the true value of Christmas!

A Winter’s Tale from Shaun the Sheep is created by BAFTA Children’s Award winner Giles Pilbrow (Horrible Histories, Scream Street), who wrote the script, and Oscar-nominated & BAFTA-winning Aardman vet Mark Burton (The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Shaun the Sheep Movie, Farmageddon). The project is being directed by Steve Cox (Pingu; animator Early Man, Shaun the Sheep Movie) and produced by Richard Beek; Burton, Sarah Cox and Carla Shelley are exec producers.

Sean Clarke, Managing Director of Aardman, said, “Aardman films have come to be synonymous with the festive period, which is a real honor. We’re delighted to be continuing this tradition with a Shaun the Sheep seasonal special that will premiere on the BBC for Christmas 2021.”

Production is set to begin in late 2020.

Lupus Films Ventures into Jill Barklem’s ‘Brambly Hedge’

Leading London animation studio Lupus Films (The Snowman & The Snowdog, The Tiger Who Came to Tea) announced today that it has optioned the rights from the author and illustrator JIll Barklem’s estate to adapt the classic countryside stories of Brambly Hedge, in a deal brokered by Rockpool Licensing.

Published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, the Brambly Hedge book series has sold over 7 million copies since the first release in 1980. Focusing on the delightful adventures of a hidden community of mice in the English countryside, the series’ characters have featured on products ranging from china to chocolate and stationery to figurines. Now, on the 40th anniversary of its original publication, Lupus Films is set to bring this bucolic world to audiences of all ages.

The family home and the natural world are at the heart of every Brambly Hedge story. With an embedded environmental message, the diminutive inhabitants treat their woodland and meadow homes with a mixture of respect and awe. They accept with gratitude the nourishment their surroundings provide while rejoicing in the contrasting beauties of every season. And while the characters work hard for themselves and each other, they are equally committed to throwing themselves into every opportunity or festivity, be it for a birthday picnic or a seasonal celebration.

Lupus is initially developing the property as a Christmas special, produced by Camilla Deakin and Ruth Fielding, with further episodes to follow shortly after. HarperCollins will launch a celebratory publishing program to commemorate the 40th anniversary in October 2020.

Ruth Fielding, Joint MD of Lupus Films, said, “The Brambly Hedge characters stand tail to tail with the most classic British literary characters and we cannot wait to delve into the hedgerows and fields of the British countryside to reveal the secrets and folklore of this hidden little community of animals. The Brambly Hedge world captures the best and sweetest moments of childhood and revels in the pleasure to be found in friendships, families, and the natural world.”

“We’re delighted to have teamed up with Lupus who have a fantastic track record of translating beautifully illustrated books on to the screen. 2020 is the 40th anniversary of Brambly Hedge, so the timing is perfect for introducing the mice to a brand new generation,” noted Lizzie Barklem, of the Brambly Hedge estate.

Lupus Films has become renowned for its Christmas animations and hand-drawn adaptations of classic British literary works including The Snowman & The Snowdog (Channel 4), We’re Going on a Bear Hunt (Channel 4) and Ethel & Ernest (BBC One). Its most recent TV special, The Tiger Who Came to Tea (Channel 4), featured a stellar voice cast and a song by Robbie Williams and was Channel 4’s most-viewed program after The Great British Bake Off.

  • Thunderbird’s Atomic Cartoons Opens LA Studio

Thunderbird’s Atomic Cartoons Opens LA Studio

Vancouver-based Thunderbird Entertainment Group Inc. today announced the expansion of its kids and family division, Atomic Cartoons, with the opening of its Los Angeles animation studio. The new studio’s first project is already in production for a major global broadcaster.

The L.A. studio will be led by Matthew Berkowitz, Chief Creative Officer of Thunderbird and Atomic Cartoons. Aaron Behl and Kristin Cummings, Co-Vice Presidents, Atomic Originals, will also hold senior leadership roles.

“We are thrilled to expand our L.A. footprint with the opening of an animation studio to house our local showrunners, directors, writers, designers, storyboard artists and editorial teams. Similar to our studios in Vancouver and Ottawa, we plan to provide a supportive and creative environment for these tremendously talented individuals to achieve the best work of their careers,” says Berkowitz. “With the ever-increasing industry demand for premium original content, the new studio is a stellar opportunity to work with the amazing animation talent base in L.A., and partner up with our award-winning creative teams in Canada.”

In 2019, the size of the streaming market for animation and VFX content was $3.5 billion, and is growing at an annual rate of eight percent. The opening of a new studio in L.A. demonstrates Thunderbird’s incredible ability to scale up to meet the continually increasing demand for on-demand content amidst the streaming wars through their kids and family division, Atomic Cartoons.

With established partnerships that include key players like Netflix, Disney, NBCUniversal, PBS, LEGO and Spin Master, Atomic Cartoons is well-positioned to continue growing to meet the demand for high-quality animated content. The L.A. animation studio will house the Atomic Originals team and primarily focus on pre- and post-production – including writing, directing, storyboarding, design, casting and recording, and editorial.

The L.A. Atomic Originals team, which formed in October 2016 with the hiring of Berkowitz, has developed and produced recent high-profile projects in collaboration with the Vancouver studio including The Last Kids on Earth by Max Brallier and Hello Ninja by N.D. Wilson, both now streaming on Netflix. Its upcoming slate includes an adaptation of the #1 New York Times bestselling Princesses Wear Pants by Savannah Guthrie and Allison Oppenheim, Eerie Elementary by Max Brallier, and a series in collaboration with global lifestyle brand tokidoki, as well as other projects yet to be announced.

By operating three studios across North America, Thunderbird is scaling-up to expand both its owned-IP slate and its capacity to provide heightened service to trusted media partners around the world. Thunderbird’s second animation studio, Atomic Ottawa, opened its doors 15 months ago. The expansion into Ottawa, initially housed 14 animators and has experienced incredible success. Today, it houses 90 animators and has become a household name for top industry talent. Atomic’s roots began with the Vancouver studio which was established in 1999 by a small group of talented artists, including Trevor Bentley, who remains with the company today as an Executive Vice President.

“The opening of our third animation studio is another major milestone for Thunderbird and Atomic, allowing greater access to incredible talent and the ability to continue to create premium content across the industry,” says Jennifer Twiner McCarron, Chief Executive Officer of Thunderbird and Atomic Cartoons. “I am so proud of Matt Berkowitz and the entire L.A. Atomic team! Our new L.A. studio will continue to build on the success of our last three years in L.A. and I am beyond thrilled about what is ahead for Thunderbird, not only at our new L.A. hub, but across the entire Company.”

With the studio now open at Suite 100 – 2233 North Ontario Street in Burbank, California, Atomic has capacity for 880 crew members across its three facilities. The existing offices for Atomic Cartoons in L.A. will also be integrated into the new facility to create a full-fledged production hub.

  • A Despicable Prodigy Rises in ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ Official Trailer

A Despicable Prodigy Rises in ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ Official Trailer

Illumination Entertainment is ready to introduce a bite-sized version of its loveable baddy when Universal Pictures releases Minions: The Rise of Gru this summer. In the newly-released official trailer, the Despicable Me prequel is set up when a precocious young Gru, ego ruffled by the dismissive adult villains who deny him his dream job, steals their precious treasure in an act of tweenage rebellion. Unfortunately, the Minions once again prove it’s hard to find good help for being bad these days…

Minions: The Rise of Gru arrives in U.S. theaters on July 3.

    Synopsis:

In the heart of the 1970s, amid a flurry of feathered hair and flared jeans, Gru (Oscar nominee Steve Carell) is growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them. Luckily, he gets some mayhem-making backup from his loyal followers, the Minions. Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob and Otto — a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please — deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons and pull off their first missions.

When the Vicious 6 oust their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles (Oscar winner Alan Arkin), Gru interviews to become their newest member. It doesn’t go well (to say the least), and only gets worse after Gru outsmarts them and suddenly finds himself the mortal enemy of the apex of evil. On the run, Gru will turn to an unlikely source for guidance, Wild Knuckles himself, and discover that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

A thrilling roster of new voice stars joins the film as members of the Vicious 6: Taraji P. Henson as cool and confident leader Belle Bottom, Jean-Claude Van Damme as Jean Clawed, Lucy Lawless as Nunchuck, Dolph Lundgren as Svengeance and Danny Trejo as Stronghold. The film also features Russell Brand as Dr. Nefario, an aspiring mad scientist; Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow, an acupuncturist with mad Kung Fu skills; and Oscar winner Julie Andrews as Gru’s maddeningly self-absorbed mom. Pierre Coffin once again provides the delightful polyglot babbling of the Minions.

Directed by Kyle Balda (Despicable Me 3, Minions), co-directed by Brad Ableson (The Simpsons) and Jonathan del Val (The Secret Life of Pets movies), the film is produced by Illumination founder-CEO Chris Meledandri and longtime collaborators Janet Healy and Chris Renaud, and features a killer ‘70s soundtrack courtesy of Grammy-winning music producer Jack Antonoff.

  • ‘Family Guy’ Vet Wellesley Wild Inks Overall Deal with WB Animation

Emmy-nominated writer/producer Wellesley Wild (Family Guy) has signed an exclusive, multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) in a first for the studio. Wild will develop, write and produce new animated projects — for both adult, kid and family audiences — at WBA across all platforms, including premium/pay and basic cable channels, streaming/on-demand and digital platforms, and the broadcast networks.

While the focus of Wild’s deal will be animation, the agreement also encompasses the other scripted programming divisions of the Warner Bros. Television Group — such as Warner Bros. Television, Warner Horizon Scripted Television and digital venture Blue Ribbon Content — for Wild to develop, write and produce original live-action projects at the Studio.

The pact with Wild marks WBA’s first major overall producer deal, signaling the Studio’s further commitment to produce the most entertaining animated programs by partnering with top industry talent for original material and leveraging the studio’s extensive library of characters, which include Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera, Scooby-Doo!, DC and more.

Wild currently serves as showrunner and executive producer for the upcoming WBA/Amblin Television series Animaniacs, which is coming soon to Hulu.

Previously, Wild wrote for 10 seasons on Seth MacFarlane’s Family Guy, rising to the level of executive producer and earning three Emmy nominations, one for Outstanding Comedy Series and two for Outstanding Animated Program. He co-wrote the feature films Ted, Ted 2 and A Million Ways to Die in the West with MacFarlane and Alec Sulkin. Wild also served as co-executive producer on the MacFarlane-created series The Orville.

“From his impressive run on Family Guy to his notable list of credits, Wellesley knows how to produce quality animation and entertain audiences,” said Sam Register, Warner Bros. Animation President. “The amazing work he is currently doing on Animaniacs is just one example of the versatile storytelling he brings to the Studio. This will be invaluable as we continue to expand our programming focus into more areas, including adult animation.”

“Warner Bros. Animation has provided the support, flexibility and passion that top the wish list of any creator, so I’m thrilled to continue our relationship and adding to the legacy of this storied studio,” said Wild.

Wellesley Wild is represented by Clifford Murray at Management 360 and attorney Ken Richman of Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman, LLP.

  • Akhauri P. Sinha Named MD of Framestore Mumbai

Framestore has announced the appointment of Akhauri P. Sinha as the head of its new, purpose-built Mumbai studio.

Sinha joins from Method, where he was Managing Director of the studio’s Indian operations. He will report directly to Framestore’s Global Managing Director, Film, Fiona Walkinshaw, and will be responsible for setting up Framestore’s newest office — a state-of-the-art facility based in the heart of Mumbai’s vibrant tech district.

The film, TV and VFX veteran brings over 20 years of experience to the post, with a CV including companies such as Nimbus, MPC, BBC Studios and UTV (now Disney India). During his VFX stints, Sinha has overseen the Indian VFX work on over 50 features, including Jumanji: The Next Level, Ford vs Ferrari, John Wick: Chapter 3 and Birds Of Prey.

“I’ve always loved how my role brings together business, creativity and technology, and Framestore exemplifies this”, said Sinha. “Framestore is renowned for both the quality of its work and its unique strategic vision, and I’m looking forward to expanding the company’s global offering and making waves in the Indian industry.”

Mumbai is recognized as a hub for digital film-making excellence, and Framestore’s new studio is located at its epicenter: Goregaon’s Nesco IT Park. Framestore will be making significant hires, and aims to bring together existing in-house talent with the best local expertise. The new office will work alongside Framestore’s established global network — predominantly its London and Montréal studios — to create a cohesive international team that delivers best-in-the-business work.

New recruits can expect to work on some of the global industry’s biggest films and franchises, as evidenced by a recent slate that includes Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far from Home, Wonder Woman 1984, His Dark Materials and The Witcher.

“Our clients come to Framestore expecting the very best,” commented Walkinshaw. “Having that kind of reputation means demand is high, and with the global production boom we’re finding ourselves busier than ever and working on more and more ambitious projects. Opening in Mumbai echoes the rapid expansion of our Montréal studio and the launch of our new Pre-production Services — it’s a strategic decision to meet industry demands and deliver excellent work. I’m delighted to have someone with Akhauri’s experience onboard to lead our work in India.”

“Akhauri brings with him expert, in-depth knowledge of India’s VFX landscape gained from a lifetime working on major film and TV titles,” said Framestore CEO Sir William Sargent. “This expertise is vital for the ambitious plans we have for Mumbai, and his experience scaling businesses and bringing together teams of high-performing creatives mean he’s exactly who we need to put our new studio on the map. I’m looking forward to seeing the Mumbai office grow and develop under Akhauri’s leadership, particularly since every office we open brings its own unique outlook and personality to Framestore’s creative culture.”

Framestore launched its FPS – Framestore Pre-production Services for the global film and content production industries last week. This will expand and enhance Framestore’s existing capability, promising clients adaptability and flexibility whether they need standalone pre-production support or a seamless end-to-end production solution.

The move sees the company’s previs, virtual production, techvis and postvis services built out and aligned with Framestore’s renowned Art Department (which operates either as part of the Framestore workflow or as a standalone creative service), virtual production team and R&D unit, and integrated with the company’s renowned VFX and animation teams. The move builds on paradigm-changing work on films such as Gravity and the knowledge gained during the company’s highly successful eight-year London joint venture with visualisation company The Third Floor. FPS is currently working on feature film projects as part of an integrated offering and also as a standalone visualization partner, with more projects slated in the coming months.

The new team is led by Alex Webster, who joins as MD, Pre-Production Services from running The Third Floor, London. He also reports directly to Walkinshaw.

The multi-Oscar-winning international studio has also just been recognized with the Best International Talent Attraction and Retention Strategy Award at this year’s Montreal International Awards. The event recognizes companies that are leading the way in terms of export, attracting overseas talent and otherwise contributing to Montreal’s economy. The local studio, launched in 2013, employs over 700 people and has contributed to diverse projects including Amazon’s The Aeronauts, HBO/BBC’s His Dark Materials and the Emmy-nominated Beyond the Wall VR experience for Game of Thrones. It is currently working on Disney’s Mulan and Warner Bros.’ Tom and Jerry.

Disney+ Sets ‘Mandalorian’ S2, Marvel Series Premieres
The further adventures of Mando and The Child will arrive in October — with CEO Bob Iger saying there’s a “possibility” of extending that Star Wars storyverse with more characters who can embark on their own series from The Mandalorian — while the first two Marvel series for the streamer, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, will bow in August and December, respectively.

The news was shared during a conference call with analysts, in which Iger also revealed that the service is up to 38.6 million paid subscribers as of Feb. 3 — a little under three months since its launch in the U.S. and there other countries. The company’s five-year goal for Disney+ is to reach 60M to 90M subscribers. The service is set to launch in U.K., Western Europe and India next month.
