  • Aardman Hatches Holiday Special ‘Robin Robin’ for Netflix

Aardman Hatches Holiday Special ‘Robin Robin’ for Netflix

Bristol-based stop-motion animation studio Aardman Studios is working on its first project for Netflix— a new 30-minute special title Robin Robin, which will debut in time for Christmas 2020. The “mini-movie” tells the story of a bird, who is raised by a loving family of mice, after her egg rolls into a rubbish dump. As she grows up, Robin needs to prove that she can be a really good mouse, despite her physical differences, so she embarks on a brilliant heist to end of all heists.

Robin Robin is created and being directed by Dan Ojari and Mikey Please and produced by Helen Argo. Sarah Cox is exec producer.

The project is a departure for Aardman, which has a long relationship with Channel 4 and the BBC. Aardman’s managing director Sean Clarke told The Guradian, “BBC budgets are under pressure” and the broadcaster “would have loved to have taken Robin Robin. But they weren’t in a position to afford it. Netflix has the ability to buy for the whole world rather than just the U.K.” He said that was the major reason Aardman decided to go with Netflix.

“Together with Aardman, we’re thrilled to celebrate and introduce new generations of families around the world to the craft of stop motion animation through Robin Robin, a magical tale that warms the heart and can be enjoyed by the whole family,” said Alexi Wheeler, Manager of Kids and Family International Originals at Netflix.

“When Mikey and Dan first pitched us the concept for Robin Robin we knew instantly that this was a rare and special project that we had to make together. It’s a beautifully crafted stop-frame musical that immediately feels classic whilst being groundbreaking and modern,” added Sarah Cox, Executive Producer.

The announcement of the special was followed up with the news that Aardman’s A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon is joining feature slate. Netflix has picked up the sci-fi/comedy sequel for the U.S., Canada and Latin American markets from StudioCanal. Co-directed by Richard Phelan and Will Becher, the little lamb’s mission to protect a cute, stranded martian will stream in early 2020, and will get an Oscar-qualifying theatrical release next awards season.

Other Aardman movies such as Wallace & Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, Flushed Away and Shaun the Sheep Movie are already part of the Netflix library.

  • This Weekend: DesignerCon Celebrates Art & Toys in LA

This Weekend: DesignerCon Celebrates Art & Toys in LA

DesignerCon made its debut in Los Angeles 14 years ago, and has steadily established itself as the largest designer toy convention in the United States. In 2018, having outgrown its original home with an eons-long wait-list of artists, designers and vendors, it expanded to three times its original size to the Anaheim Convention Center. The 350,000 square feet of programming space plays host to over 800 artists and vendors, including MEDICOM, KidRobot, Mighty Jaxx and Giant Robot, as well as street brands like Dumb Good.

This year centering around the theme of outer space, DesignerCon is going to places it’s never been before, incorporating VR, art galleries and more for a comprehensive pop culture immersion.

DesignerCon returns to the Anaheim Convention Center November 22-24, tickets available online.

Highlights of this year’s expanded DCON program include:

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse VR Tunnel by Sutu, Sponsored by Sony Animation. Grossing over $350 million worldwide, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse made one of the biggest impacts on popular culture of any movie in the past year. For 2019, Sony has partnered with DesignerCon to showcase a glitch art tunnel drawing attendees into the Spider-Verse themselves with a cutting-edge VR tunnel, featuring original art and animation from the groundbreaking film. The work has been created by famed VR and comic-book artist Sutu and is sponsored by Sony Animation.

Exclusive Bearbricks by MEDICOM, Benefitting the Andy Warhol Foundation. Returning for the second year in a row, MEDICOM will immerse attendees in a jaw-dropping array of merch hard to find outside of Japan. The company will be providing VIPs with an exclusive and limited-edition Bearbrick of the DesignerCon mascot. Artists Luke Chueh, Joe Ledbedder, Tristan Eaton, Kano, Scott Tolleson, and Steven Harrington are also teaming up with MEDICOM to release custom-designed Bearbricks exclusively available at the convention on a first come, first serve basis. Sales of the exclusive Bearbricks will benefit the Andy Warhol Foundation.

Hamilltoon: The Many Voices of Mark Hamill — A Fan Art Show. A themed art show this year will honor the Jedi Master himself, Mark Hamill, with an art show curated by Carman Acosta (a.k.a. Jane Dope), titled Hamilltoon: The Many Voices of Mark Hamill. Mark Hamill is scheduled to appear to check-out the art and celebrate the release of the DesignerCon exclusive Mark Hamill Funko Pop ONLY available at DesignerCon.

Beyond Eden: A New Showcase of Lowbrow, Pop Surrealist & Outsider Art. On the heels of Littletopia that drew crowds at the LA Art Show, Beyond Eden is spearheaded by Thinkspace Projects founder Andrew Hosner, as a way to connect DesignerCon attendees directly to the larger art world. Many artists who are prominent in the designer toy realm also have thriving fine art careers. Picking up where Greg Escalante’s Littletopia left off, Hosner’s Beyond Eden will be exhibiting many of the artists DCON attendees already know and love, plus the galleries who rep them, and other artists in their repertoire.

The inaugural archway welcoming attendees into the new section will be designed by Carlos Ramirez, formerly of The Date Farmers artist collective. Galleries that will be part of this year’s programming include: Thinkspace Projects, La Luz De Jesus, KP Projects, Dark Art Emporium, Modern Eden Gallery, and the Tierra Del Sol Foundation.

New Book Debut by Camille Rose Garcia. Beloved pop surrealist artist Camille Rose Garcia will release her long-awaited book, The Cabinet of Dr. Deekay, at this year’s convention, along with book signings and limited edition prints. The vivid colors that animate her cute but macabre visuals have anointed her as one of the most distinct voices in the pop surrealist movement, alongside titans like Mark Ryden, iconic pop surrealist, and the surrealist painter Lenora Carrington. Following its debut, the book will be available on Amazon.com, at Barnes & Noble, and at CamilleRoseGarcia.com.

Secret Walls is returning to DesignerCon with a new kind of art battle. Bigger than ever, the competition between teams will go on for the entire weekend, and for the first time ever, DCON attendees will be able to vote for their favorite mural.

With even more access and perks than the upgraded VIP passes, the new MVP Pass grants attendees two exclusive Mark Hamill DesignerCon Funko Pops, and an exclusive T-shirt.

Following its massive success from last year, DesignerCon will once again host a special Friday night opening giving VIP pass holders first and exclusive access to all the vendors before everyone else, as well as some of the most exclusive releases in the world. VIPs will be granted early admission at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, one hour before opening to the general public at 10 a.m. Saturday will conclude at 7 p.m., with general admission Sunday hours running from 10 a.m. to 6pm.

Built as a tribute to pop art and the brilliant minds that create it, DesignerCon continues the tradition of commissioning original works to set the tone for each year’s convention. For 2019, artist Steve Harrington created the attendee badges, while Camille Rose Garcia designed the cover of the convention’s booklet. Additionally, billboard advertisements for the convention will be created by Steven Harrington, Jim Mahfood, Matt Gondek and Scott Tolleson.

This year will feature a larger selection of cutting-edge streetwear brands like X-Large, and NTWRK will even be doing live broadcasts.

  • Netflix & Tonko House Team for ‘Oni’ Inspired by Japanese Folklore

Netflix & Tonko House Team for ‘Oni’ Inspired by Japanese Folklore

Netflix is joining forces with Academy Award-nominated animation studio Tonko House (The Dam Keeper, Moom, Pig: The Dam Keeper Poems), to bring an all-new original series to life. Titled Oni, the Japanese folklore-inspired adventure series will feature a hybrid of both stop motion and computer generated animation.

In a world filled with the oddball gods and monsters of Japanese mythology, one of the creature’s free-spirited daughters, Onari, is determined to follow in the footsteps of the mighty heroes of lore, but her unique powers are yet to be revealed. Does she have what it takes to protect her peaceful village from the encroaching presence of the mysterious “Oni” who threaten the gods?

Tonko House co-founder Daisuke “Dice” Tsutsumi will serve as creator and showrunner on the series. Megan Bartel will serve as producer, and co-founder Robert Kondo, Kane Lee and Zen Miyake of Tonko House are executive producers. Early development partners include Japanese stop-motion animation house dwarf studios (Rilakkuma and Kaoru) and CG effects house Megalis VFX, also based in Japan.

“Having spent my entire career in the American animation industry, part of me always wondered if there would ever be a place in the stories I tell for the other half of my identity, as a Japanese native,” said Tsutsumi. “This Tonko House collaboration with Netflix is perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to freely embrace my unique background to share with the rest of the world the wonderful stories I grew up with in Japan, particularly ones I believe are timely to the society we live in today.”

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Dice and the rest of the Tonko team on this incredibly sweet story of self-discovery rooted in Japanese folklore. Dice is a renowned filmmaker with a deep passion for celebrating Japanese culture, and we’re honored to support his foray into animated series together with the team at Tonko,” said Aram Yacoubian, Director, Original Animation at Netflix. “We fell in love with Onari and the specific Japanese mythology built around her, and we’re confident that her very personal, relatable story of self-discovery will resonate with audiences around the world.”

Originally from Japan, Dice Tsutsumi is a graduate from The School of Visual Arts in New York, he has worked as a visual development and color key artist at Blue Sky Studios on Ice Age, Robots and Horton Hears a Who! His credits at Pixar Animation include Lighting Art Director for Toy Story 3 and Monsters University. After the success of Tsutsumi’s directorial debut, the Academy Award-nominated short film The Dam Keeper, he left Pixar to co-found Tonko House with Robert Kondo. The filmmaker and painter is also passionate about charity work, and spearheaded both The Totoro Forest Project and Sketchtravel.

Oni joins a robust lineup of Netflix original animated series for kids and families by creators from all over the world, including Ghee Happy from Sanjay Patel, Mighty Little Bheem from Rajiv Chilaka, Larva Island from Korea’s TUBAn Co., as well as the upcoming Dino Girl Gauko from Akira Shigino, Mama K’s Team 4 from Malenga Mulendema and Maya and the Three from Jorge Gutierrez.

Revisit the latest stop-motion opus from LAIKA Studios in a new clip which goes behind the scenes of Missing Link, one of the worthy animated features under consideration for the 92nd Academy Awards race.

“Shooting something in such subtlety, with such nuance, frame by frame … With stop motion, it’s a live performance from the beginning to the end,” Lambden explains. “And it needs to be genuine to try and get your character to come alive.”

DreamWorks Animation unveiled the heartwarming trailer for new holiday special DreamWorks Spirit of Christmas, based on its Emmy Award-winning series Spirit Riding Free. Trailer: CN Opens a New Chapter in ‘Steven Universe Future’

The future is here! Cartoon Network’s multiple award-winning Steven Universe will premiere its highly anticipated epilogue series, Steven Universe Future, with four back-to-back new episodes on Saturday, December 7 (8 p.m. ET/PT). The fan-favorite series returns after the successful release of Steven Universe The Movie, and continues the show’s narrative with additional episodes continuing to debut on Cartoon Network.

The series is created by Emmy and Annie Award-nominated writer Rebecca Sugar, and produced by Cartoon Network Studios.

In Steven Universe Future, after saving the universe, Steven is still at it, tying up every loose end. But as he runs out of other people’s problems to solve, he’ll finally have to face his own. Haunted by the past and lost in the present, Steven begins manifesting new, uncontrollable powers that the Crystal Gems have never seen from him before. What does it all mean, and what does Steven want for his future?

Future is extremely meaningful to me because it’s a story we can only tell now, after the events of the original show, and the events of the movie. This limited series is, for many of us who have been with the crew since the very beginning, our chance to reflect and to give the last few pieces of the puzzle we’ve been designing since 2012,” said Sugar. “But it’s also our chance to look forward, to work with new artists and writers and feature their voices within the Steven Universe universe. I’m so grateful to the team that came together on Future, and so excited for the world to see what’s next for Steven Universe.”

Since its premiere in 2013, Steven Universe has been passionately championed by fans and critics who praise the series for consistent themes of diversity, inclusion, unconditional love and support. The series made history this past March as the first animated show to be honored with a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming. In April, the show received the Peabody Award, which highlighted the series’ themes of empathy and earnestness. Last summer, Steven Universe continued to break ground in celebrating a same-sex wedding ceremony between two of its beloved characters, Ruby and Sapphire. The episode “Reunited,” was deemed one of the best animated episodes of 2018 by Entertainment Weekly, and “one of the most earnest and openhearted … wedding ceremonies in animation history.”

The first five seasons of Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe followed Steven, the “little brother” to a team of magical aliens — the Crystal Gems — who defended the planet Earth. Steven is the son of the Crystal Gems’ late leader Rose Quartz and aging aspiring rockstar Mr. Universe. He belongs everywhere and nowhere and has inherited his mother’s Gem and her magical powers, but also his father’s humanity and charm.

Fans can catch up on Steven Universe on the CN App and VOD and get Steven Universe The Movie on DVD now. Additionally, the movie’s expansive vinyl soundtrack is currently available for purchase via all major retailers, in a deluxe and standard version

  • Nick Greenlights ‘Blue’s Clues & You!’ S2 After No. 1 Debut

Nick Greenlights ‘Blue’s Clues & You!’ S2 After No. 1 Debut

Beloved puppy Blue will skidoo into season two as Nickelodeon has greenlit an additional 20 episodes of its newest series Blue’s Clues & You!, which took the top spot as the number-one preschool show in its first week on air (11/11/19-11/17/19). The curriculum-driven interactive series posted strong gains during its premiere week, up +38% with K2-5 (2.9/257,000) over prior four weeks and +34% among total viewers (674,000).

New episodes of Blue’s Clues & You! will continue to air weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon.

Blue’s Clues & You! follows Blue as she invites viewers to join her and Josh on a clue-led adventure and solve a puzzle in each episode. With each signature paw print, Blue identifies clues in her animated world that propel the story and inspire the audience to interact with the characters.

The second season will follow Josh (Josh Dela Cruz) and puppy Blue on brand-new adventures with friends old and new. The new season will also feature special appearances by Steve (Steve Burns), Joe (Donovan Patton) and Josh’s Lola (Carolyn Fe) — his grandmother — along with even more singing and dancing, exploration, celebration and, of course, clues that empower preschoolers to help their friends.

Later this month, Nickelodeon will debut a brand-new float inspired by Blue’s Clues & You! in the 93rd Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Host Josh Dela Cruz will perform on the float alongside a 22-foot tall Blue covered in 13 pounds of glitter.

Alongside the linear episodes, brand-new Blue’s Clues & You! play-along videos are currently available in Noggin, Nick’s top-ranked interactive learning subscription for preschoolers. The play-along videos allow users to explore the stories in an immersive way, and engage with live-action host Josh and the animated characters, by tapping, touching or swiping to navigate through enhanced learning experiences. Preschoolers have the ability to customize elements, like the color of the clues or the creation of birthday cards for Blue, and then see their designs appear throughout the video. The classic Blue’s Clues library is also available on Noggin and additional Blue’s Clues & You! play-along videos will continue to roll out into next year.

Original short-form content and full-length episodes of Blue’s Clues & You! are available now on NickJr.com and the Nick Jr. App. Episodes are also available on Nick Jr. On Demand and Download-To-Own services.

The original Blue’s Clues series launched in September 1996 to critical praise from educators, parents, and preschoolers and ran for six groundbreaking seasons. Created by Traci Paige Johnson, Todd Kessler and Angela C. Santomero, Blue’s Clues drew acclaim and high ratings for its unique interactivity that helped change the way kids watch television and has remained one of the most popular preschool shows of all time. The landmark series also raised the bar in preschool television by exploring advanced subject matter such as sign language, geography, physics, emotions and anatomy.
