Cartoon Network Unveils Long List of New Toons

There is a lot to look forward to on Cartoon Network’s recently announced fall and winter season, including the debuts of the new series Justice League Unlimited, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, Atomic Betty and Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi.

  • As previously reported here, Justice League Unlimited is slated to launch on Saturday, July 31, at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT). In this fourth season of the Justice League series, the world’s greatest superheroes, led by Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern, enlist some help from additional friends Green Arrow, Supergirl and Captain Atom, as well as more obscure superheroes such as the brother-sister team Hawk & Dove, jungle man-turned-superhero B’wana Beast, glory-seeking time traveler Booster Gold and beautiful sorceress Zatanna.
  • Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends arrives on Friday, Aug. 13, at 7:30 p.m. The new half-hour animated comedy series from The Powerpuff Girls creator, Craig McCracken, will kick off with a 90-minute feature. New episodes will then air every Friday at 7 p.m., with a replay at 10:30 p.m., beginning Aug. 20. The show follows the adventures of a boy named Mac and his imaginary friend, Blooregard, who is sent to a very unique foster home when Mac’s mother decides her son is too old for an imaginary friend.   • Atomic Betty, the continuing adventures of a little girl with a big secret, premieres on Friday, Sept. 17, at 9:30 p.m. To her friends and family, Betty is the sweet and brainy girl next door. But when the galaxy beckons, she sheds her humdrum persona and becomes Atomic Betty, Galactic Guardian and Defender of the Cosmos. Toon was created by Canada’s Atomic Cartoons and co-produced with Breakthrough Media and France’s Tele-image Kids.
  • Hi Hi Puffy Ami Yumi joins the lineup on Friday, Nov. 26, at 7:30 p.m. The series chronicles the lives of two very cool, but very different, pop stars as they travel from gig to gig or just hang out in their hometown of Tokyo. Together, they take the world by storm despite occasional misjudgments from their well-meaning but tragically square manager, Kaz.
  • The new arrivals will join fresh episodes of returning favorites Teen Titans (Saturdays at 8 p.m., new season Oct. 1), Megas XLR (Saturdays at 9 p.m., new season Nov. 6), The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy (Friday nights at 10 p.m., new season Oct. 1), Evil Con Carne (Fridays at 9 p.m., new season Oct. 1), Totally Spies (new season Oct.) and Codename: Kids Next Door (Friday nights at 10 p.m., new season Oct. 29).
  • Cartoon Network will also add four new comedies and two new anime series to its late night Adult Swim block. Stroker & Hoop, a 30-minute special about a bumbling private eye and his disobedient talking hatchback, will premiere Sunday, Aug. 1, at 11:30 p.m. Squidbillies, another half-hour special, will debut on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 11:30 p.m. The comedy about a family of squids stranded in a remote setting in the North Georgia mountains will become a weekly series in 2005.
  • On Aug. 7 at 11 p.m., the net will begin airing the new series The Venture Bros., about two Jonny Quest-wannabes who routinely call on their bodyguard to help them out of jams. Series is produced by New York-based Noodlesoup Productions.
  • Saturday, Nov. 6 will see the launch of two new series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (11 p.m.) and Fullmetal Alchemist (11:30 p.m.) Stand Alone Complex continues the adventures of female cyborg Maj. Motoko Kusanagi and her mission to hunt down criminals in both the real and online world, while Fullmetal Alchemist tells the story of 15-year-old with special abilities to manipulate objects and transform them into other things.
  • Tom Goes to the Mayor, a 15-minute comedy, will then have its series premiere Sunday, Nov. 14 at 11:30. Tom Peters, a would-be entrepreneur and civic do-gooder in the eccentric small town of Jefferton, brings his crackpot ideas to The Mayor, who invariably endorses them. From there, the show explores the comedic possibilities of government machinations and provincial thinking.
  • Also on tap for Adult Swim are new seasons of Aqua Teen Hunger Force (Sunday, Aug. 15, at 12 a.m.) and Sealab 2021 (Sunday, Nov. 14, at 11:45). If you’re attending Comic-Con in San Diego this weekend, keep your eyes peeled for Adult Swim news at the confab.
