The first-ever DOOM 3 Deathmatch Championship will be held at the 9th Annual QuakeCon video game festival and tournament, taking place Aug. 12-15 at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas. In addition to bragging rights, challengers will be competing for $150,000 in cash and prizes.
Event sponsor NVIDIA Corp. is putting up the prize purse for the three QuakeCon tournaments. Dan Vivoli, exec VP of marketing for NVIDIA, comments, “NVIDIA’s presence at QuakeCon gives gamers an opportunity to test drive the game with NVIDIA’s GeForce 6 series, a product family designed to deliver the ultimate DOOM 3 experience to gamers of all budget levels.”
Since DOOM 3 is set to launch this summer, consumers have not yet had a chance to practice and master the game. This leaves the playing field level so that almost any QuakeCon attendee has a chance to walk away with one of the exclusive prizes. Registration for this 128-player tournament will begin Aug. 12, the first day of the convention.
The QUAKE III Arena One Vs. One Championship will kick off on Aug. 12 with 256 players going toe-to-toe in a bid to win $50,000. Registration will open July 11 at 8 p.m. Central on www.quakecon.org. See the site for for official tournament rules and prize money distribution details.
The convention will also host the Quake III Capture the Flag Tournament. A total of 32 teams will compete for $40,000 in cash in four-on-four double elimination championship rounds. Registration for the open seeds will begin on July 11 at 8 p.m. Central. Teams earning a berth in last year’s top 16 spots will receive an automatic berth this year. The remaining team slots will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.
QuakeCon began in 1996 as a LAN party dedicated to fans of id Software’s games, and has grown to include QUAKE, QUAKE II, QUAKE III Arena, QUAKE III: Team Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and now DOOM 3. The event was created by gamers as a way to meet with online friends in person, get to know the developers of the games they crave, talk shop with industry leaders and compete against the best players in the world. Over the years, QuakeCon has grown from a small gathering of 150 players to become a Mecca for more than 4,000 gamers. The popular event is free to all attendees and first-come, first-serve online registration is now open at www.quakecon.org.
