Peter, Jack, Homer, Cartman and SpongeBob are getting the tuxes pressed in light of today’s announcement of Primetime Emmy Awards nominations. The race for Outstanding Animated Program (less than one hour) will be run by Fox’s Family Guy ("North By North Quahog"), Cartoon Network’s Samurai Jack (Episode XLIX), Fox’s The Simpsons ("Future Drama"), Comedy Central’s South Park ("Best Friends Forever") and Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants ("Fear of a Krabby Patty/Shell of a Man").
In the category Outstanding Animated Program (one hour or more), Cartoon Network’s Star Wars: Clone Wars Vol. 2 (chapters 21-25) is in competition with Animal Planet’s Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real. The "documentary" on mythical beasts features photo-real digital animation by Framestore CFC and Cinesite. Clone Wars was produced at Cartoon Network Studios under the direction of Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky.
The Simpsons also got nods in the categories Outstanding Music Composition (for "Treehouse of Horror XV"), Outstanding Music and Lyrics (for "Always My Dad" from the episode "A Star is Torn"). Also getting recognition for music are Cartoon Network’s Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and Justice League Unlimited, which are both nominated for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music.
HBO’s Classical Baby is the only animated show vying for Outstanding Children’s Program. It’s up against Nickelodeon’s Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, A&E’s Pride and Disney Channel’s That’s So Raven.
SCI-FI Channel nearly monopolized the Visual Effects for a Series category, landing noms for Stargate SG1, Stargate Atlantis and two episodes of Battlestar Galactica. The network’s only competition is ABC, which is recognized for effects in the pilot for Lost.
On the minisries, movie or special side, SCI-FI’s cancelled Farscape finally received a long-overdue visual effects nomination for the four-hour mini, Farscape The Peacekeeper Wars. The Jim Henson Co. production is up against fellow SCI-FI miniseries Legend of Earthsea, as well as Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real, HBO’s The Life and Death of Peter Sellers and Discovery Channel’s Supervolcano.
With 15 nominations each, ABC’s Desperate Housewives and NBC’s Will and Grace will dominate the evening as CBS airs the 57th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium on Sunday, Sept. 18. For a complete list of nominations, go to ww.emmys.com.
