Showtime’s Masters of Horror Becoming Comics

IDT Ent.’s Masters of Horror, an new anthology series debuting Friday, Oct. 28, on Showtime, will be adapted into a 12-part series of limited edition comic books. IDW Publishing will begin releasing the chilling, full-color issues this December.

Masters of Horror is a series of hour-long tales of terror directed by 13 leading minds of the horror genre. Produced by IDT Ent., Industry Ent. and Nice Guy Prods., the project has attracted such contributors as Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep), John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing), John Landis (An American Werewolf in London, Twilight Zone: The Movie) and Mick Garris (The Shining TV miniseries). Garris, an exec producer on the series, developed the concept with fellow exec producers Andrew Deane and Keith Addis.

The first Masters of Horror comic will be Incident On and Off a Mountain Road, based on an original short story by Joe R. Lansdale and adapted for the TV series by Coscarelli and Stephen Romano. The story will be adapted as two-part comic by IDW’s editor-in-chief, Chris Ryall (Shaun of the Dead), and Jeremy Haun (Desperadoes: Banners of Gold). These initial issues of the series will feature special painted covers from Masters of Horror conceptual artist Caniglia, as well as a photo cover taken directly from each episode.

Issues three and four will adapt H.P. Lovecraft’s Dreams in the Witch House, written by Ivan Brandon (NYC Mech), illustrated by Dennis Calero and based on the teleplay by Dennis Paoli and Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, Dagon). Gordon also directed the episode for Showtime. Ben Templesmith will provide covers for this two-parter. Future two-issue arcs will tackle episodes by Landis, Carpenter, and others.

IDW Publishing, a division of creative service company Idea + Design Works LLC, has released best-selling titles based on CBS’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Konami’s Metal Gear Solid and GrimJack: Killer Instinct. IDW also has films in development at Sony Pictures, Dimension Films and Paramount Pictures.
