Disney Takes Live-Action Trip to Fantasia

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Walt Disney Pictures is developing a live-action feature based on the Johann Wolfgang Goethe Poem ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,’ which inspired the Mickey Mouse sequence in the 1940 animated Disney feature Fantasia. Nicolas Cage is reportedly attached star in the fantasy-adventure tentpole, which is being produced by Saturn Film partner Norm Golightly and Todd Garner’s Broken Road Prods.

The current screenplay by the writing team of Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal (I, Robot, Mona Lisa Smile) places the story in present-day New York, where a powerful sorcerer, played by Cage, seeks to pass his knowledge on to an apprentice. No director has been attached yet. Brigham Taylor is overseeing for Disney and Ben Haber will shepherd the project for Broken Road, which is currently working with Cage on a thriller titled Next for release this spring.

This Friday, Cage can be seen in Columbia Pictures’ Ghost Rider, an effects-laden superhero pic based on the Marvel comic-book series. Producer Avi Arad, the former CEO of Marvel, is reportedly chomping at the bit to get started on a sequel if the movie does well this weekend.
