Sony Denies Spidey Piracy

Sony Pictures has issued a statement saying news reports of Spider-Man 3 piracy in China are incorrect. The studio took special measures to keep the film off the black market, including releasing the feature in China before rolling it out in the U.S.

‘We have uncovered examples of Spider-Man 2 being sold in Spider-Man 3 boxes in China,’ the studio statement reads. ‘But thus far we can find no instance where Spider-Man 3 has appeared on DVD.’

The studio says there have been similar hoaxes and false alarms associated with other major films, and remarks, ‘This incident underscores one of the problems with piracy’people who buy illegal movies often get ripped off themselves.’

Sony also conducted an extensive web search and says it has not found any pirated copies of Spider-Man 3 on the Internet. The third installment in director Sam Raimi’s blockbuster saga will be released in China on May 3, just hours before its May 4 North American bow, and will roll out practically day-and-date in most parts of the world.
