Atari Makes More Job Cuts

0

The latest game for employees at Atari Inc. and parent company Infogrames Ent. appears to be something called Avoid the Axe. The company announced today that it is reorganization its general and administrative functions and reducing its workforce by approximately 20%.

Approved by the board of directors on April 10, the job cuts are expected to be completed by July 31 and will see about 26% of the administrative staff let go. Infogrames will record a restructuring charge of approximately $0.8 million to $1.1 million during fiscal 2008.

Atari has been struggling to operate more cost effectively for the last couple of years. The company overhauled its senior management team and closed two key U.S. publishing studios in Santa Monica, Calif., and Beverly, Mass. in February of 2005. Company president and CEO James Caparro stepped down in June of that year and layoffs reduced the company’s workforce by 20% in February of 2006. Last month, Infogrames co-founder Bruno Bonnell left his varied positions at the company and Atari Inc.

Infogrames Ent. has two principal subsidiaries, the privately-held Atari Europe and U.S. corporation Atari Inc. The Atari Group is a major international producer, publisher and distributor of interactive entertainment software for all market segments and in all existing game formats.
