Family Guy Movie Looming?

As The Simpsons Move gets set to roll into theaters this weekend, Seth MacFarlane, creator of FOX’s other hit animated series, told The Hollywood Reporter that a Family Guy feature film may be on the horizon. He indicated that his team is up against the same challenge long faced by the Simpsons camp, which is devoting time to developing a movie without having the quality of the TV series suffer.

McFarlane said that he is contemplating hiring former Family Guy scribe Ricky Blitt begin work on a script so that none of the show’s current writers are pulling double duty. However, he notes that there is no plot in mind yet. Blitt is the creator of the short-lived FOX sit-com The Winner, which McFarlane exec produced. Like Family Guy before it, The Winner may have a shot at resurrection, according to McFarlane.

A Family Guy movie could come together in a couple of years if all the pieces fall into place, McFarlane tells the trade. He says he doesn’t want to do a big ‘The Griffins must save the world’ film, but would rather focus on a smaller story about the loveably dysfunctional family. McFarlane and crew dipped their toes in the feature waters with Fox Home Entertainment’s direct-to-video movie, Family Guy Presents Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story. The release earned more than $41 million during its first two weeks at retail.
