Aardman Snags British Animation Awards

Bristol-based Aardman Animations collected four top awards at the 2008 British Animation Awards (BAA). Oscar winner Peter and the Wolf from Suzie Templeton was also recognized at Thursday night’s ceremony, which honored the British animation industry’s most talented and creative figures. Host Joe Pasquale presided over the event at the BFI in London.

Aardman took the coveted Craft Award for The Pearce Sisters, a short film by Luis Cook, which also won this year’s BAFTA for short-form animation. The studio was also recognized with Best Children’s Series and the Children’s Choice Award for Shaun the Sheep, and won the New Media: Best Commissioned Animation award for The Peculiar Adventures of Hector, by Sally Arthur and Sarah Cox.

Peter and the Wolf ran off with the award for Best TV Special, while Animate Projects took two awards; Best Short Film for Yours Truly by Osbert Parker and Best Film at the Cutting Edge for Magnetic Movie by Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt. Darren Walsh and Frank Budgen dominated the commercials categories, claiming Best Commercial: Craft and Best Commercial: Direction for their work on the Sony Bravia: Play Doh spot produced by Passion Pictures.

Best Preschool Series went to Charlie and Lola: Too Many Big Words, directed by Kitty Taylor and produced by Tiger Aspect for CBeebies. Cat Man Do by Simon Tofield and Tandem Films nabbed Best Comedy, and Best Student Film was awarded to t.o.m., created by University of Wales students Tom Brown and Daniel Gray, which was also the Public Choice winner in the film category.
