Student Oscar Winners Picked

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has named the eleven winners in this year’s Student Academy Awards competition. The gold, silver and bronze awards for the best animation, alternative, documentary, narrative and foreign films will be handed out during a ceremony on June 9 at 6 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

The in the animation category are Art’s Desire by Sarah Wickliffe from New York University, A Leg Up from Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota, Fla. alum Bevin Carnes, and Mirage by Youngwoong Jang from the School of Visual Arts, New York. While they each know they will receive an award, they wont find out if it’s gold, silver or bronze until awards night. In addition to trophies, there are cash prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 on the line.

The U.S. students first competed in one of three regional competitions, with each regions permitted to send as many as three finalists in each of the four categories. Academy members then screened the finalists’ films and voted to select the winners. Hailing from six colleges and universities, the lucky filmmakers will participate in a week of industry-related activities and social events before the gala awards presentation.
