  • Jared & Jerusha Hess’ First Animated Short ‘Ninety-five Senses’ Qualifies for Oscars

Jared & Jerusha Hess’ First Animated Short ‘Ninety-five Senses’ Qualifies for Oscars

Husband-and-wife filmmaking team Jared and Jerusha Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) have entered the animated short Academy Awards race with Ninety-five Senses — a heartfelt tribute to the bodily experience, delivered by a death row inmate with limited time to enjoy it. Premiered at HollyShorts 2022, the film marks the Hesses’ first foray into animation, and heads into Oscars season with the Academy Awards-qualifying Grand Jury Award for Best Animated Short from the Florida Film Festival.

Tim Blake Nelson, known his roles in the Coen brothers’ O Brother Where Art Thou? and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs as well as his recurring turn as The Leader in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, lent his voice to the main character, Coy — a folksy philosopher facing his own mortality. As Coy bids a final farewell to each of his five senses, he reflects on his troubled past and dreams of a vibrant, multisensory afterlife.

Ninety-five Senses has been selected by 17 Oscar-qualifying film festivals around the world, winning awards at Animation Dingle in Ireland (Best International Professional Short), the Guadalajara International Film Festival in Mexico (Rigo Mora Special Jury Award) and most recently the Flickers’ Rhode Island Film Festival (First Prize, Best Short Animation).

Ninety-five Senses was produced as part of the MAST program of the non-profit Salt Lake Film Society. MAST provides grants, training and mentorship to animators and filmmakers, with a special emphasis on projects that change minds and change the world. Its program includes a fellowship, labs, mentorship, career advocacy, networking, contests, productions and funding.

The film’s producers are MAST co-founders Miles David Romney, a veteran Broadway investor and co-producer (Moulin Rouge!, Hadestown, Life of Pi), and Tori A. Baker, CEO of Salt Lake Film Society and Board VP of The Cinema Foundation. More information available at maststudio.org.

While Ninety-five Senses is their first animated short film, the Hesses also collaborated on the Netflix Original animated feature Thelma the Unicorn (2024).

Crayola Studios & 9 Story Kick Off Content Partnership with ‘Finn Caspian’

EVP Victoria Lozano took to the stage at MIPJunior in Cannes on Sunday to set out the vision and inspiration behind Crayola Studios’ move into entertainment content. Delivering the Keynote presentation, Lozano stressed the long-term commitment to Crayola Studios, revealed the insights that helped inform the decision and announced a significant new production deal with 9 Story Media Group.

“As world leaders in creative self-expression, the move is a logical next step for the brand,” said Lozano. “With the establishment of Crayola Studios, we seek to inspire and nurture the next generation and help them develop lifelong creative mindsets. I believe Crayola’s unique perspective and its long-standing mission and values present an exciting opportunity for the industry as it searches for and develops stand-out new entertainment content with creative self-expression at its heart.”

Research undertaken by Crayola demonstrates that parents are on board with Crayola’s move into entertainment content, with Crayola Studios receiving a 94% appeal rating. At least 95% of respondents said they expected shows from Crayola Studios to be highly entertaining, creative and educational, as well as more creative than other shows currently available. Lastly, interest in individual show concepts grew by an average of 75% when parents learned these would be presented by Crayola Studios.

“Parents value creativity, but many are looking for help to nurture it in their kids. Creativity is a life skill critical to future potential. So, it is only natural for Crayola, that has been a trusted part of kids’ and families’ lives for over a century, to take on a role of championing and celebrating children’s creative self-expression,” explained Lozano. “Crayola has a unique perspective, one that we’ve translated into key tenets for entertainment revealing a white space in the industry. No one does — or frankly can do — this the way Crayola can.”

In addition to outlining the genesis of and rationale behind Crayola Studios, Lozano unveiled the company’s significant development, production co-financing and licensing deal with 9 Story Media Group. Crayola Studios will work with the award-winning content creator, producer and distributor on series development, with 9 Story handling production and distribution and Crayola managing the licensing and merchandising for the franchises.

The first title in the multi-project deal, in active development in partnership with MIMO Studios, is The Alien Adventures of Finn Caspian. The animated adaptation of Gen-Z Media’s award-winning kids’ podcast written and performed by Jonathan Messinger with the help of his son. A first-look is being presented to buyers at MIP.

“We are excited to work with 9 Story and this strong partnership demonstrates Crayola’s ambition for our move into kids’ content,” Lozano commented. “Our aim is to work with best-in-class creators, studios and distribution partners who share our vision in creating inspiring, joyful, and encouraging new multi-genre content. We know 9 Story’s outstanding expertise and flair will help us to achieve something special.”

Vince Commisso, President &  CEO of 9 Story Media Group, said, “Crayola is a brand trusted by families worldwide for generations. We’re very happy to be teaming up with them to develop content that explores the limitless possibilities of children’s creativity. • Meet ‘Twende,’ Showmax Africa’s First Original 2D Toon

Meet ‘Twende,’ Showmax Africa’s First Original 2D Toon

Showmax has released a trailer for Twende — the first Showmax Original 2D animated series. The show follows a pangolin — an endangered species which is the slowest on the savannah and the most-trafficked type of animal in the world — who makes up for his natural lack of speed by driving a motorcycle taxi.

“Twende’s belief that, ‘life is about the journey, not the destination’ is constantly at odds with his job as a boda boda driver in the bustling, fictional East African city of Milima,” says South African showrunner Greig Cameron, who also wrote and directed Seal Team, which cracked the Netflix Global Top 10 film list in January last year, as well as the hit soccer animated series, Supa Strikas.

The series pilot debuted at Annecy 2021, and the trailer was recently premiered at the Cape Town International Animation Festival. MultiChoice Studios is handling international sales and will present Twende at MIPCOM next week.

Twende is voiced by Junior Nyong’o (The Legend of Lwanda Magere, Hamlet), while June Gachui (Crime and JusticeNairobi Half Life) plays his unlikely best friend and navigator, Nuru — a whip-smart bird (specifically, a lilac-breasted roller, Kenya’s national bird) who always looks out for her bestie, even if his chilled-out vibe drives her crazy sometimes. Kalasha Awards nominee Elsaphan Njora (Super Sema, Kati Kati) voices Boss, the perennially broke and exhausted hyena who owns the boda boda agency where Nuru and Twende work. He’s a single dad with more mouths to feed than he can count.

The all-Kenyan voice cast also includes Charles Ouda (Crime and Justice) as showy stunt driver Kimbe and Mkamzee Mwatela (Mali) as Boss’s rival, Madam Mongoose, CEO of the evil tech empire Goober. Kalasha Awards winner Nyokabi Macharia (Super Sema), Joyce Musoke (Second Family) and seasoned voice actor and director Khaemba W. Edward (Ogas at the Top, The XYZ Show) provide additional voices.

The concept was created by Charlie Maas and Regan Riskas Maas while they were touring East Africa. “My older brother is always late, so we were constantly yelling at him, ‘Let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go.’ And the guide started saying, ‘Twende! Twende!’” says D&AD and Cannes Lions  winner Charlie Maas. “So his nickname for the trip became ‘Twende the Pole Pole Man.’ We wrote the original theme song in the back of that Jeep and sang it about 100 times over the next few days.”

Regan Riskas Maas (assoc. producer, Transformers: Age of Extinction) adds, “Driving through Nairobi later, we were astounded by the traffic. We couldn’t believe the many matatu buses and boda boda drivers weaving in and out of traffic. That really left an imprint on us, so we started to imagine the slowest man on the Savannah driving a boda boda, and what that might look like. And so, in true Twende fashion, it took a long, meandering yet overwhelmingly positive journey to get from there to where we are now.”

The creators felt it was important to enlist local writers, directors and animators to bring the concept to life, which they did through a partnership between London-based Braintrust and Mind’s Eye Creative in Johannesburg — a leading 2D studio in South Africa which has created award-winning international content for Cartoon Network, Disney XD, Netflix, Nickelodeon and more for over a decade.

Twende’s co-creators are South Africans Mike Scott, a Triggerfish Story Lab winner who has well over 100M views on YouTube, and Kayla Archer (DISCOP Animation Du Monde pitch finalist Hiraeth). The writing team includes Zambian Malenga Mulendema, who created Netflix’s first African animated series, Supa Team 4; Nigerian Vanessa Kanu (Supa Team 4, Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire); Kenyan J. Njogu Macharia, winner of ScreenCraft Animation Competition 2021 and Coverfly Pitch Week 2022 finalist; and South African head writer Sheldon Bengtson, a DISCOP Joburg Animation Pitch winner who was shortlisted for the Triggerfish Story Lab.

Twende also features original music from Kenyan producer and Kalasha winner Eric Musyoka (Rafiki), with a score by top South African music studios The Music Works, Phonographic and Pressure Cooker Studios.

While the subject of animal poaching isn’t directly addressed in this light-hearted comedy, the producers hope their animated pangolin star will help spread awareness of the species and the threats facing them.

“It’s such a shame that this is happening to this amazing and unique animal,” says Kenyan executive producer Kwame Nyong’o (Annecy official selection, The Wonderful Story of Aisha, Ali and Flipflopi the Multicoloured Dhow Boat), who was also part of the team behind the multi-award-winning Most Eligible Bachelor Tinder campaign with the Ol Pejeta Conservancy for the last Northern White Rhino on Earth. “Twende is a super silly show, but we hope that, between all the humour and all the hijinks, our audience will fall in love with pangolins as much as we have and do their part to help protect them.”

Twende will premiere on Showmax across Africa on December 4. New episodes will roll out on Saturdays.

  • VIZ Launches ‘One-Shot’ Portal for American Comic Creators

VIZ Launches ‘One-Shot’ Portal for American Comic Creators

As part of its VIZ Originals line, publisher VIZ Media has launched a one-shot submissions portal which will see American aspiring creators published alongside Japanese legends such as Rumiko Takahashi, Junji Ito and Haro Aso via the VIZ Manga digital service. The new platform will produce bite-size original manga stories covering a variety of interests from horror to comedy and from action to romance, all locally created by debut and seasoned writers.

The Japanese one-shot model for serialization is a highly successful avenue to launch new manga creators: A one-shot (a complete story running between 15-60 pages) is published for an already built-in audience who then determine whether it should go on to be serialized as a manga series.

Leading the acquisitions is former Weekly Shonen Jump Editor-in-Chief Hisashi Sasaki, who oversaw the prestigious Japanese manga magazine at a time when some of the most admired and highest grossing creators were being serialized, including Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto and Tite Kubo’s Bleach.

“In Japan, a yomikiri or one-shot story has a proven track record for producing hit manga, and I’m thrilled to implement this method at VIZ for local writers in the U.S.,” said Sasaki. “I’m particularly excited to work with aspiring mangaka as Japanese pop culture continues to keep fans enthused and wanting more.”

Creators whose submissions are selected will also have the opportunity to work closely with editor Sasaki, making VIZ Media the only publisher in the U.S. to offer this experience domestically. Until now, manga-influenced creators who aspire to work with Japanese editors have had to travel to Tokyo for such an opportunity.

Additionally, successful one-shots can access tap into all VIZ Media’s operations have to offer, including the licensing and establishing of an IP as an ongoing series for digital and print formats, producing their story into an anime, and the production of consumer products.

Visit the VIZ Originals submission portal to learn more and submit your next-hit idea: viz.com/create.

Lion Forge Entertainment announced today it has set a first-look deal with award-winning Nigerian creator and producer Roye Okupe, founder of YouNeek Studios and creator of the YouNeek YouNiverse. Okupe and Lion Forge are currently working together on the animated fantasy series Iyanu (Max / Cartoon Network), based on Okupe/YouNeek Studios’ and Dark Horse Comics’ award-winning graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder.

“Roye Okupe’s incredible talent as a creator, writer and director is a testament to his dedication to storytelling that resonates with audiences of all backgrounds,” says David Steward II, Founder & CEO of Lion Forge Entertainment. “His creative vision aligns seamlessly with Lion Forge’s mission to offer diverse, culturally rich narratives that allow children to see themselves represented on screen. Under the deal, Lion Forge will adapt Okupe’s bestselling graphic novels (published through Dark Horse Comics) for TV, film and games, including Malika: Warrior Queen, E.X.O. – The Legend of Wale Williams, WindMaker and The Oloris. Okupe will also collaborate on Lion Forge’s own original projects as a developer, writer and/or director for the studio. The partnership also expands Lion Forge’s Iyanu rights to include live action.

“I am delighted to call Lion Forge Entertainment my creative home. They have shown unwavering support for my vision of Iyanu and the YouNeek YouNiverse, and I am eager to work closely with them on bringing these stories to life,” says Okupe. “This partnership not only strengthens our commitment to authentically represent Nigerian and African stories but also opens the door to new, original projects within the YouNeek YouNiverse and Lion Forge’s exciting originals. Together, we aim to make a lasting impact on the world of entertainment.”

Stephanie Sperber, CCO of Lion Forge Entertainment, adds, “I look forward to exploring Roye’s captivating YouNeek YouNiverse and collaborating closely with him to develop additional authentic and compelling content for kids and families around the world. Together, we aspire to create generational stories that entertain and inspire.”

Production is currently underway on the Iyanu animated series. Lion Forge will introduce the project to global distributors at MIPCOM next week, offering a look into Iyanu’s captivating world as an epic superhero tale steeped in Nigerian culture, music and mythology. Okupe will also be discussing all things Iyanu (including offering an exclusive first look) during Dark Horse’s “World of Iyanu” panel this Sunday at New York Comic Con.

Born and raised in Lagos, Okupe is an accomplished author and filmmaker whose passion for comics and animation drove him to found YouNeek Studios in 2015. Through this platform, he has pursued his vision to create an interconnected universe of superhero and fantasy stories that draw inspiration for African history, culture and mythology.

  • BBC & Magic Light Strum Up First Look at ‘Tabby McTat’

BBC & Magic Light Strum Up First Look at ‘Tabby McTat’

The BBC and Magic Light Pictures (magiclightpictures.com) have released a first look at their next Christmas animated adventure, Tabby McTat, a story set on the streets of London about the warm and wonderful friendship between a musical cat and a talented busker called Fred.

Tabby McTat is such a beautiful story about embracing change and the transitions in life as well — from childhood to adulthood and people going on journeys. There is so much warmth and celebration of family and community, but then there’s also, the moments of fear and loss that is often a gain,” said Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who), who narrates the special.

“We had cats when we were growing up. My cat gave birth under my bed, and it was magical. But then as a child you realize your parents don’t let you keep them all. ‘What? I thought we were going to have five kittens forever.’ But I was lucky, and I did get to keep one of them. Its name was phenomenal — Wicket W. Warrick,  named after an Ewok — and it had an older brother called Teebo, another Ewok! And my cat was beautiful, very beautiful with long brown hair and looked like an Ewok and with a personality very similar to mine — needy and a bit feral!”

The film, for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, is adapted from the successful picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. It marks the 11th animated special adapted from their work produced by Magic Light Pictures for the BBC.

“The story is very special to me because as well as having been a busker myself, I’m also a great cat lover,” Donaldson noted. “At the time I wrote it we had cats, but they were very old and alas, are no more. But now we have two Tabby cats and they’re called Tabitha and McTat.”

Tabby McTat also features the voices of Rob Brydon (Gavin and Stacey) as Fred, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísú (Gangs of London) as Tabby, Cariad Lloyd (Peep Show) as Prunella, Joanna Scanlan (The Thick of It) as Pat and Susan Wokoma (Enola Holmes) as Sock.

The film is directed by the Superworm duo Sarah Scrimgeour and Jac Hamman, written by Max Lang and Suzanne Lang, and produced by Barney Goodland and Michael Rose of Magic Light Pictures. Tabby McTat was acquired by Charlotte Moore, BBC Chief Content Officer and Nawfal Faizullah, BBC Drama Commissioning Editor. Animation services are provided by Red Star Studio.

  • Room to Read Debuts Trailer for ‘She Creates Change’ Inspirational Film Series

Room to Read Debuts Trailer for ‘She Creates Change’ Inspirational Film Series

Timed to International Day of the Girl (October 11), global education nonprofit Room to Read launched the official trailer for its animation and live-action film series She Creates Change. The six-episode project aims to reach the 432 million adolescent girls (ages 12-18) in the world with content and educational curriculum that supports them in creating change in their lives and communities.

“Every girl around the world woke up today with the same need. She had to utilize skills like resilience, self- confidence and critical thinking to overcome challenges — for herself, her family or her community,” says Dr. Geetha Murali, CEO of Room to Read. “To achieve a world free from gender inequality, girls must develop these important skills and have access to role models that make perseverance possible. She Creates Change is Room to Read’s solution to accelerating equality for every girl in the world by spotlighting role models who demonstrate their use of key skills to accomplish positive change. Inspired by the stories presented in She Creates Change, I know young women everywhere will activate their abilities to be changemakers and make informed choices to shape their futures.”

She Creates Change comprises a series of six animated shorts with accompanying live-action mini-documentaries that tell the stories of six courageous young women from historically low-income communities in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and Vietnam. Each girl confronts challenges unique to her life — such as harassment, food scarcity or early marriage — and uses particular life skills to advocate for herself. Stories address topics including climate justice, financial literacy, discrimination, menstruation and sexual harassment.

    ‘Keya’

To produce the film series, Nexus Studios — winner of the Academy Award, BAFTA, Cannes Grand Prix and the Grammy — curated a team of diverse women directors and artists from around the world with distinct visual styles, including Oscar nominee Siqi Song (Sister), Hannah Lau-Walker (Yeah, I’m good thanks.), Bonnie Forsyth (Femme Enfant), Claudia Chinyere Akole (Chinyere Comic), Neeraja Raj (Meow or Never) and Prashanti Aswani (Machi).

Emmy-winner Martha Adams, whose pasts projects include Girl Rising and We Will Rise: Michelle Obama’s Mission to Educate Girls around the World, serves as series director and producer for the project. Executive producers are Brenda Chapman, the first woman to win an Oscar for best animated film (Brave), and veteran screenwriter and director Jill Culton (Abominable), recipient of Animation Magazine‘s Game Changer award for being the first woman to solo write and direct an original animated theatrical feature.

“For too long, the stories we have seen and heard through global media have not represented the voices of so many young women in the world,” Adams asserts. “The practice of sharing stories by women, about women and for women is an undeniably powerful way to help girls advocate for themselves and their rights. It is an honor for me to help share the diverse stories featured in She Creates Change. Though each girl’s individual circumstances may be unique, the courage and skills demonstrated are universal and exemplify how the rising generation of girls can use their voices to change their circumstances and societies.”

    ‘Trang’

London’s first Young Poet Laureate Warsan Shire, whose poetry was adapted for Beyonce’s Lemonade, crafted the screenplays. Rebel Girls, a global multi-media girl empowerment brand, is a strategic partner on the campaign and has produced books and audio stories that complement the film series.

The episodes feature voice overs by a roster of talent including Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Charithra Chandran (Bridgerton), YouTube sensation Prajakta Koli (MostlySane), Dilshad Vadsaria (Greek), Adhir Kalyan (Rules of Engagement), Amita Suman (Shadow and Bone), Amrita Acharia (Game of Thrones) and Quyen Ngo (American Preprequisite).

“The path to a gender-equal world is being paved by Room to Read. Through its programs and ground-breaking content including She Creates Change, Room to Read demonstrates exactly what can — and does — happen when young women are supported to learn and imagine their own futures,” Pinto says. “She Creates Change is a poignant call to action for us all to increase our investment in girls’ education.”

    ‘Naifat’

Kenyan R&B pop singer Karun (Karungari Mungai) performs the original She Creates Change campaign song “Who Am I?” written by Warsan Shire and composed by Lucie Treacher.

The non-profit film project will be available in dozens of language — starting with English, Spanish and Hindi — and distributed throughout the world, through Room to Read programs and in partnership with community organizations and governments. Curriculum packages that align with the stories presented, based on Room to Read’s comprehensive seven-year Girls’ Education Program curriculum, will be provided online, through broadcast media and in-person programming.
