    Planning the Next Playdate

In 2024, BLE and Licensing Expo (Las Vegas) will share a theme for the first time ever: Brands in Play.

“To celebrate the concept of play, we are dedicating 2024 to Brands in Play, a theme that will run as an undercurrent across BLE and Licensing Expo to spotlight the incredible innovations in play, the power it holds in every stage of life and the creativity it allows when building brands,” said Anna Clarke, SVP licensing, Informa Markets.

“Immersive entertainment, storytelling and fan engagement are changing, and the concept of play is changing with it. Today, brands are creating multi-generational, omnichannel play patterns that permeate video games, tabletop, board and card games, location-based entertainment, immersive theatre, sports and esports, toys and kidult culture. Brands are also playing in new spaces, building ground-breaking new extensions and bringing the brand licensing business to life in increasingly creative ways.”

Brand Licensing Europe will return to ExCeL London for the next edition September 24-26, 2024.

  • Sony Music & Sony Pictures TV Kids Team Up for ‘Messi and the Giants’

Sony Music & Sony Pictures TV Kids Team Up for ‘Messi and the Giants’

Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television – Kids, together with Leo Messi Management, today announced that they are teaming for the first time to produce and globally distribute the new animated series, Messi and the Giants, inspired by the Argentinian football superstar. The series will be introduced at MIPCOM.

Created for children and young adolescent audiences,  Messi and the Giants depicts a 12-year-old Messi as he confronts various obstacles while traveling through a video game on a quest to go home. The series will feature original music from Sony Music Entertainment artists and composers.

Messi, the recent football world champion with the Argentine National Team, is a global icon and inspiration to millions of fans. To date, he is the only athlete in the world to win seven Ballon d’Or awards, and six Golden Boots. Messi joined MLS team Inter Miami in July of this year, where his debut match became the most-watched soccer game in U.S. television history. Off the pitch, Messi is recognized for his sportsmanship and passion for the sport, which will be featured heavily throughout the series.

“We’re thrilled to present Messi and the Giants at MIPCOM, the global market for entertainment content,” said Fernando Cabral, EVP, Business Development, Latin-Iberia, Sony Music Entertainment. “With our partners at Sony Pictures Television – Kids, we can’t wait to share the vision and creative direction behind this inspirational series with full support from Leo and his incredible team.”

Joe D’Ambrosia, EVP & General Manager, Sony Pictures Television – Kids, added, “Football is the only sport around the world that can inspire excitement and connection in the same way that storytelling does. What makes this series special is that it focuses on the same principles of good sportsmanship … it’s about perseverance, resilience, teamwork and believing in yourself. We’ve enjoyed working with Leo and the entire team at Sony Music on this creative collaboration, and we’re looking forward to sharing more about this thoughtful and inspiring series to our broadcast and platform partners later this month.”

Story editor & writer Guy Toubes (Odd Squad) has joined the project as lead scriptwriter, bringing years of experience across the television, interactive media, stage and motion picture space. Canary Islands-based Atlantis Animation (Tara Duncan, Miraculous Ladybug) will serve as the lead creative studio driving graphic development and art treatment. The series was developed by Sony Music Entertainment in partnership with Leo Messi and will be available in English, Spanish and many other languages.

Earlier today, Messi revealed a new teaser clip across his social media platforms, giving fans a first-look at the series’ title character and logo treatment:

  • ‘Snow White’ Restoration Coming to Disney+ October 16

‘Snow White’ Restoration Coming to Disney+ October 16

The 100-year-old Walt Disney Animation Studios’ first-ever animated feature, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, will join in the centenary celebrations with the new 4K restoration arriving on Disney+ on October 16.

This restored version of the 1937 classic is the result of the combined efforts of the Walt Disney Studios Restoration and Preservation team, working closely with key artists from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the same team who recently worked together on the critically-acclaimed restoration of Walt Disney’s 1950 animated classic, Cinderella.

The reunited team included Disney Animation artists Michael Giaimo (production designer for the upcoming animated musical adventure Wish, as well as Frozen and Frozen II) and animator/director Eric Goldberg (head of hand-drawn animation for Disney Animation’s newest short, Once Upon a Studio; director, Pocahontas, Fantasia/2000).

“The opportunity to help restore Snow White was both an honor and a challenge,” said Goldberg. “As the very first Walt Disney feature, Mike Giaimo and I felt we owed a debt to history to get it looking as beautiful, and as accurate to the original colors, as we could. The muted palette and the delicate watercolor backgrounds evoke the illustrated fairy tales that Walt so loved, and the story and characters continue to resonate to this day. I hope our work inspires future generations of animation artists to fully appreciate the masterful talent and care that has gone into this landmark film.”

Kevin Schaeffer, director of Restoration for Walt Disney Studios, said, “We are incredibly excited to go back to Walt’s original negative and use current state of the art technology to restore this stunning classic to its original beauty.”

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first full-length cel-animated feature ever made. The film was recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences with a special honorary Oscar  — one large Oscar accompanied by seven smaller ones — which was presented to Walt Disney by Shirley Temple. The film is the highest-ranked animated feature on the American Film Institute’s “100 Years…100 Movies” list, and was inducted into the National Film Registry in the registry’s inaugural year, 1989.

  • Rooster Teeth Pulls Most Popular Content from YouTube

Rooster Teeth Pulls Most Popular Content from YouTube

Fans of Warner Bros. Discovery-owned animation and geek-focused content company Rooster Teeth will have to seek beyond YouTube for some of their favorite shows. Recently, Rooster Teeth removed some of its most popular animated shows, including flagship series Red vs. Blue and Camp Camp, from the platform in a move meant to encourage viewers to tune in on the Rooster Teeth website.

In a video shared to the RT community by Kerry Shawcross, senior writer & supervising director at Rooster Teeth and showrunner of its anime-style fantasy-adventure RWBY, the message boils down to a simple and long established fact: ‘animation is expensive and hard to make.’

A post shared by Rooster Teeth (@roosterteeth)

While some RT shows, including RWBY, are produced in partnership with other studios, prodcos and distributors, the company’s fully in-house content is entirely supported by viewers. By tuning in to their favorite shows through roosterteeth.com, fans can contribute even more as ads on the free-to-stream episodes can generate approximately five to 10-times as much revenue to fund these animated projects.

Shawcross and the RT team note that fans of Camp Camp and RvB can make an even bigger impact by joining its FIRST service, which offers exclusive early access to content and contributes even more to the bottom line than watching ads on the site.

In addition to Camp Camp and Red vs. Blue, Rooster Teeth is home to the RWBY franchise, Recorded by Arizal, Nomad of Nowhere, Max Original gen:LOCK, the animated offshoots of Death Battle!, Achievement Hunter and Face Jam, and more.
