VES Announces Hall of Fame Inductees for 2023

These, along with the year’s other special honorees, will be celebrated at an event in October. The 2023 class of VES Hall of Fame honorees includes Samuel Z. Arkoff; Lawrence W. Butler; Wah Chang; Norman Dawn, ASC; W. Percy Day OBE; Marcel Delgado; Farciot Edouart, ASC; and Edward D. Wood, Jr.

“Our VES Hall of Fame honorees represent a group of exemplary and pioneering artists and innovators who have had a profound impact on the field of visual effects,” said VES Board Chair Lisa Cooke. “We are proud to recognize those who helped shape our shared legacy and continue to inspire future generations of VFX practitioners.”

VES 2023 Hall of Fame Inductees

    Samuel Z. Arkoff

Samuel Z. Arkoff (1918-2001) was an American producer of more than 200 low-budget exploitation films. He was the co-founder of American Releasing Corporation, which later became known as American International Pictures (AIP). He is credited with starting several genres including beach party and outlaw biker movies, and his company played a substantial part in bringing the horror film genre to a novel level with successes such as Blacula, I Was a Teenage Werewolf and The Thing with Two Heads. AIP films starred many established actors in principal or cameo roles, including Boris Karloff and Vincent Price, as well as others who became household names, most notably Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson. Arkoff also gave fresh talent including Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen the opportunity to direct some of their early feature films. He was featured alongside former collaborators including Roger Corman, Dick Miller and Peter Bogdanovich in the documentary SCHLOCK! The Secret History of American Movies, about the rise and fall of American exploitation cinema.

    Lawrence W. Butler

Lawrence W. Butler (1908-1988) was an American special effects artist, best known as the inventor of the bluescreening process. He won an Academy Award for Best Special Effects for his work on The Thief of Baghdad. Butler invented the blue screen and traveling matte technique in order to achieve the visual effects which were unprecedented in 1940. He was also the first special effects innovator to have created these effects in Technicolor, which was in its infancy at the time. His filmography includes special effects for The Caine Mutiny, Casablanca, 20 Million Miles to Earth and Oscar-nominated work on That Hamilton Woman, Jungle Book and A Thousand and One Nights. Butler also received a Scientific and Technical Award from the Academy for the concept of applying low inertia and stepping electric motors to film transport systems and optical printers for motion picture production.

    Wah Chang

Wah Chang (1917-2003) was an American designer, sculptor, animator and artist. In 1939, Chang became the youngest member of Disney’s effects and model department, where he sculpted the title maquette of Pinocchio and articulated deer models for Bambi that animators used as references. He is lauded for the props he designed for Star Trek: The Original Series, including tribbles, the tricorder and communicator, and for his spectacular creations including the headdress for Cleopatra, masks for the original Planet of the Apes, the dinosaurs in Land of the Lost and the time machine in the 1960 adaptation of H.G. Wells’ sci-fi favorite The Time Machine, for which he won an Academy Award for his visual effects work, but is not formally listed among the recipients of that award due to the way in which the credits were submitted to the Academy. Chang’s work as a stop-motion animator has been enjoyed for years in the cartoons Hardrock, Coco and Joe and Suzy Snowflake.

    Norman Dawn

Norman Dawn, ASC (1884-1975) was an early American film director and artist. Although cinematography was his chosen profession, he also functioned as producer, director, writer, designer, visual effects cameraman, matte painter, production illustrator and film editor. He was the first person to use the glass shot in a motion picture, now known as matte painting, and was the first director to use rear projection in film production. Dawn’s first film Missions of California made extensive use of the glass shot, in which certain parts of the intended image are painted on a piece of glass and placed in between the camera and the live action. Dawn combined his experience with the glass shot with the techniques of the matte shot. The low cost and high quality of Dawn’s matte shot made it the mainstay in special effects cinema throughout the century. His filmography includes A Tokyo Siren, Lure of the Yukon and Orphans of the North.

    Percy Day

(Walter) Percy Day O.B.E. (1878-1965) was a British painter best remembered for his work as a matte artist and special effects technician in the film industry. Day mastered the art of illusionist techniques, which enabled directors to enlarge their repertoire and tackle subjects which might otherwise have been too costly to produce. In 1922, he introduced the use of the glass shot into French cinema, which was used for the first time in Henry Roussel’s Les Opprimés, released in 1923, and hailed by critics as a revolution in cinematography. In addition to designing special effects, Day created trick photography for many British classics released during the forties, including The Life and Death of Colonel BlimpA Matter of Life and DeathBlack NarcissusThe Third Man and Laurence Olivier’s production of Henry V. He painted mattes and created trick shots for numerous films by Alexander Korda and later joined the Korda group as Director of Special Effects at Shepperton Studios where he remained until his retirement. In 1948, Day was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to British cinema.

    Marcel Delgado

Marcel Delgado (1901-1976) was a Mexican-American sculptor and model-maker, whose technique revolutionized stop-motion animation. Prior to Delgado, stop-motion models were typically made from clay, which was difficult to adjust between shots. He built a skeleton for his models, made from Dural and then filled in with foam rubber or cotton cloth and covered with latex to serve as skin, giving his models a more natural and realistic look, while simultaneously making it easier to handle them. Delgado and Willis O’Brien worked together for many years and became one of the most respected special effects teams in Hollywood, inspiring great technicians and producers such as Ray Harryhausen. Their most famous and groundbreaking collaboration was the original King Kong, who Delgado brought to life by sculpting one of the most iconic characters in cinematic history. After King Kong, Delgado continued to break new ground as a special effects master working on films like The Wizard of OzMighty Joe YoungThe War of the Worlds20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Mary Poppins.

    Farciot Edouart

Farciot Edouart, ASC (1894-1980) was an American motion picture special effects artist and innovator of French descent, a recognized specialist and innovator in process photography, also known as rear projection. At the onset of World War I, Edouart enlisted in the Camouflage Division of the Corps of Engineers, and patented a technique for detecting camouflage through photographic means, and then worked as a war photographer for the American Red Cross in Europe. In addition to being adept at making back-projection look realistic and exotic locales appear authentic, Edouart also perfected the glass shot, which cleverly melded small models with full-sized sets. In a career that began in 1915 and spanned work on approximately 350 films, Edouart won a total of 10 Academy Awards: two competitive for I Wanted Wings and Reap the Wild Wind; seven technical and scientific awards; and an honorary award for Best Visual Effects for outstanding achievement in creating special photographic and sound effects for Spawn of the North.

    Edward D. Wood, Jr.

Edward D. Wood Jr. (1924-1978) was an American filmmaker, actor and pulp novel author. In the 1950s, Wood directed several low-budget science fiction, crime and horror films that later became cult classics, notably Glen or Glenda, Jail Bait, Bride of the Monster and Night of the Ghouls, several of which were collaborations with his personal movie idol, Bela Lugosi. Notable for their campy and low-brow aesthetics, unmatched stock footage, eccentric casts and idiosyncratic stories, Wood’s films remained largely obscure until he gained posthumous notoriety as the creator of “the worst film ever made” Z-movie classic Plan 9 from Outer Space, renewing public interest in his life and work. Following the publication of Rudolph Grey’s 1992 oral biography Nightmare of Ecstasy: The Life and Art of Edward D. Wood Jr., the biopic Ed Wood was directed by Tim Burton. The cinematic homage, starring Johnny Depp as Wood, received critical acclaim and two Academy Awards, and cemented Wood’s unique legacy as a cult-icon.

As previously announced, Oscar-winning VFX supervisor and founding VES member Tim McGovern was named recipient of the 2023 VES Founders Award. The Society designated archivist and curator Sandra Joy Aguilar; producer and AMPAS Governor Brooke Breton, VES; VFX artist agent and executive Bob Coleman; and Tim McGovern with Lifetime VES memberships. Additional honorees to be announced.

  • New Prodco Inanimatti Launches with ‘Arky Arch Adventures’ Led by Eric S. Rollman

New Prodco Inanimatti Launches with ‘Arky Arch Adventures’ Led by Eric S. Rollman

A new production company is ready to introduce itself to the global toon scene at MIPJunior and MIPCOM this fall, when Inanimatti Inc. debuts its launch IP Arky Arch Adventures. The studio is co-founded by avant-garde car designer Chris Bangle, and the animated project will be overseen by industry veteran producer Eric S. Rollman, the former President of Marvel Animation, Saban Entertainment and Fox Family Productions who launched Rollman Entertainment in 2010.

Inanimatti is developing an extensive narrative world created by Bangle and his partners, who include linguist Fiorella Marengo. The inaugural project based in this world, Arky Arch Adventures is a 13 x 20’ animated series for kids ages 6-12, where everyday objects come alive.

“Our primary objective with the Inanimatti is to create a universe of imagination based, of all things, on how car designers see the world as full of buildings and things that are alive,” Bangle explains. “We hope to encourage kids to see the world around them in a new and imaginative way, fostering a deeper appreciation for design and creativity, as well as teaching them the importance of accepting diversity and change in others as well as within themselves.”

    Synopsis:

The comedy-adventure series follows Arky, a hopeful, young Roman Arch who embarks on a high-stakes journey across the planet Tredi to uncover his true Purpose …  and save the world from devastation. The story takes place in the time of the Gothic Wars, where the “things” are alive and adventures ensue. In school, some classmates tease Arky because on the outside, he is “strange” for a Triumphal Arch — he was “made” of one block, without a real keystone — but inside, Arky is smart, thoughtful, courageous and resourceful. And, while that courage doesn’t blind him to the inherent dangers ahead, his passion to triumph along with his naturally endearing leadership qualities find him like a pied piper of friends of all shapes, sizes and archetypes equally fitting for adventure.

Arky Arch Adventures captured my attention from the first image. It optimizes the medium of animation through a pioneering series filled with captivating characters, compelling storylines, and entertaining adventures,” says Rollman. “Equally compelling is that it also delivers meaningful themes in a way that kids everywhere will understand and relate to. Chris and his team of co-creators have created a concept that is truly a first in long-form animation, and we look forward to attending MIPJunior to introduce Arky Arch to the world.”

Bangle’s background is in car design, having spent 17 years as head of design at BMW, and known for reimagining the designs of BMW, Mini, Rolls Royce, Fiat and more. With a gift for imbuing inanimate objects with personality, he has been called “arguably the most influential auto designer of his generation”  by The New York Times.

Rollman is an Emmy Award-winning producer with extensive credits in animation and live-action programming and decades of leadership experience. He works with clients across development, production, distribution and IP/franchise strategy, often tasked with the oversight of the day-to-day production. His current workload includes Sony Pictures Television’s prime-time animated series Good Times: Black Again (Netflix), Sausage Party: Foodtopia (Amazon), The Boys Presents: Diabolical (Amazon) and  Hoagie Bros. (Fox). Recently, he produced RAID: Call of the Arbiter (10 x 5’) for Pixel United/Plarium Games, based on the billion-dollar RPG strategy game, RAID: Shadow Legends, which premiered May 18 on YouTube with over 24 million views to date.

Rollman is partnered with Misty Copeland’s Life in Motion Productions for the development of multiple projects and has worked with Activision, developing a slate of gaming IP into animated series, and advised Crayola, IDW, SeaWorld and Mattel. He is also co-founder and President of Generation Genius, the #1 fastest growing education company in America on the 2022 Inc. 500 List and recognized on the Time100 2023 list of World’s Most Influential Companies.

Anime fans can look forward to appropriately haunting hilarity this fall with today’s announcement that HIDIVE has acquired the new fantasy comedy series The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess. The thing is, her new unit consists solely of belligerent ruffians who revolt against their superiors at the slightest hint of weakness. Although Komari hails from a line of vampires as powerful as they are prestigious, her refusal to drink blood has made her the picture of mediocrity — scrawny, un-coordinated and inept at magic. With the odds stacked against her, will the help of her trusty (and slightly infatuated) maid Vill be enough for this recluse to blunder her way to success? Or will Komari rue the day she ever left the safety of her room?

The documentary is a delightful look at the unexpected influences that led to the making of the movie.

The new short, which opened in front of Elemental in theaters on June 16, joins an existing collection of shorts, Dug Days, that follow the humorous misadventures of the lovable pup with the high-tech collar (currently streaming on Disney+).

  • The Plot Chickens! Netflix Launches ‘Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget’ Official Teaser

The Plot Chickens! Netflix Launches ‘Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget’ Official Teaser

Feathering the nest for the arrival of Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget on Netflix December 15, the streamer today unveiled the official teaser trailer, key art and freshly hatched catching announcement for the eagerly awaited Aardman sequel.

In the new preview, fans can catch a first glimpse of Melisha Tweedy (a.k.a. Ginger’s arch nemesis, Mrs. Tweedy), voiced by accomplished stage, film and television actress Miranda Richardson, who has refashioned herself for a new era of fowl-play in the teaser trailer out today. Also joining the cast is British actor, comedian, director and screenwriter, Peter Serafinowicz, who voices Reginald Smith — a humorless businessman who along with Tweedy poses a new and bigger threat to chicken-kind.

“They say a movie is only as good as its villain, and Ginger’s nemesis, Mrs. Tweedy, is one of the all-time greats. Now she’s out to take industrial-scale revenge on all chicken-kind with the Dawn of the Nugget,” said director Sam Fell. “We’ve had so much fun working with Miranda Richardson to transform Melisha Tweedy into the ultimate 1960s super-villain. Miranda has a unique understanding of drama and comedy, making you laugh while scaring the pants off you in the exact same moment. Also rounding out our fantastic cast is Peter Serafinowicz playing Reginald Smith, a slightly bemused businessman visiting Mrs. Tweedy’s giant nugget factory. It takes a particular kind of comic genius to play the foil to Miranda Richardson’s hilariously frightening archvillain. Peter pulls it off with effortless finesse.”

Synopsis: From the multi Academy and BAFTA award-winning Aardman (Creature Comforts, Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep), and Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated director Sam Fell (ParaNorman and Flushed Away, respectively) comes Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the eagerly anticipated sequel to the beloved and highest-grossing stop-motion animated film of all time, Chicken Run.

Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream — a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk — this time, they’re breaking in!

  • SAG-AFTRA National Board Sends Video Game Strike Vote to Members

SAG-AFTRA National Board Sends Video Game Strike Vote to Members

Actors’ guild SAG-AFTRA’s National Board has voted unanimously to send a strike authorization vote to SAG-AFTRA members in preparation of the union’s forthcoming bargaining dates with signatory video game companies, which include:

    • Activision Productions, Inc.
    • Blindlight, LLC
    • Disney Character Voices, Inc.
    • Electronic Arts Productions, Inc.
    • Epic Games, Inc.
    • Formosa Interactive, LLC
    • Insomniac Games, Inc.
    • Take 2 Productions, Inc.
    • VoiceWorks Productions, Inc.
    • WB Games, Inc.

It has been nearly a year since SAG-AFTRA’s video game contract, the Interactive Media Agreement, was extended beyond the original expiration date as the union negotiated with the companies for critical terms. Now, the negotiating committee and National Board have unanimously agreed to have a member-approved strike authorization in hand when bargaining resumes on September 26.

Although key issues like wages that keep up with inflation and protections against unrestrained use of artificial intelligence are common sticking points in negotiations, the Interactive Media (Video Game) Agreement is a separate contract from the TV, theatrical and streaming contracts against which SAG-AFTRA members are currently striking.

“Here we go again! Now our Interactive (Video Game) Agreement is at a stalemate, too,” said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. “Once again we are facing employer greed and disrespect. Once again artificial intelligence is putting our members in jeopardy of reducing their opportunity to work. And once again, SAG-AFTRA is standing up to tyranny on behalf of its members.

“The overlap of these two SAG-AFTRA contracts is no coincidence, but rather a predictable issue impacting our industry as well as others all over the world. The disease of greed is spreading like wildfire ready to burn workers out of their livelihoods and humans out of their usefulness. We at SAG-AFTRA say no! Not on our watch!”

Work under the Interactive Media Agreement also includes a great deal of performance capture, where trained professionals, many of whom are stunt performers, provide digitally captured performances used to give expressive movement to video-game characters. SAG-AFTRA points out that unregulated use of AI destabilizes these established professions.

“The voice and performance capture artists who bring video-game characters to life deserve a contract that reflects the value they bring to the multibillion-dollar gaming industry,” explained SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. “Voice and performance-capture AI are already among the most advanced uses of AI: the threat is here and it is real. Without contractual protections, the employers are asking performers to unknowingly participate in the extinction of their artistry and livelihoods.”

In addition to AI protections, SAG-AFTRA is seeking the same wage increases for video-game performers as for those who work under the film and television contracts: 11% retroactive to expiration and 4% increases in the second and third years of the agreement — necessary for members’ wages to keep up with inflation.

The union is also asking for on-camera performers to have the same five-minutes-per-hour rest period that off-camera performers are entitled to. Also needed: a set medic present when stunts or hazardous work is performed, just like on a film or television set; prohibitions against stunts on self-taped auditions; and vocal stress protections.

A successful strike authorization vote does not initiate a strike, but permits the National Board to declare a strike if the video-game companies fail to negotiate terms deemed fair to members of SAG-AFTRA. The union’s demands include protective language in the contract that will require informed consent and appropriate payment for the creation and use of digital replicas and for training AI systems with our members’ performances.

Voting information postcards will be mailed to eligible voters on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023. Voting will close at 5 p.m. PT on Monday, Sept. 25, 2023. Members are also invited to learn more at informational meetings set for Thursday, Sept. 7 and Tuesday, Sept. 12, both from 6-8 p.m. PT / 9-11 p.m. ET. For voting instructions, meeting information and more, visit sagaftra.org/videogames2023.

  • GKIDS Offers a ‘Pre-Teaser’ for Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’

GKIDS Offers a ‘Pre-Teaser’ for Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’

Apologies for ruffling feathers, as the introductory video released today by GKIDS still does not reveal any actual footage from the highly anticipated and much speculated new Hayao Miyazaki movie The Boy and the Heron — but at least we have an official mini-synopsis and drop date for a first look!

Backed by otherworldly music (the film features a score by long-time Miyazaki collaborator Joe Hisaishi), the video explains:

    A young boy named Mahito
    yearning for his mother
ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead.
There, death comes to an end
and life finds a new beginning.

    A semi-autobiographical fantasy
    about life, death and creation,
    in tribute to friendship,
from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki.

The hand-drawn, animated feature film — Miyazaki’s first feature film in 10 years, and reportedly his last — is an original story written and directed by the Studio Ghibli co-founder and produced by his longtime company partner/co-founder and Academy Award nominee Toshio Suzuki. Hisaishi handles the musical score, and the film’s theme song, “Spinning Globe,” was penned and performed by global J-pop superstar Kenshi Yonezu.

A first-look teaser will be released on September 6, ahead of the film’s international premiere Opening Night Gala screening at the 48th Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, September 7.

Tickets to all festival screenings for The Boy and the Heron at TIFF sold out in record time. This fall, the film makes its U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival, its European premiere at the San Sebastian International Film Festival and its U.K. premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.

GKIDS will release the film across North America later this fall.

Black Women Animate & Titmouse Join Forces for Equity Excelerator

Today, Black Women Animate Studios (BWA) and The Titmouse Foundation announced their plan to support BWA’s goal of hiring 200 diverse animation professionals by the end of 2025. To reach this goal, the pair will introduce BWA’s new Equity Excelerator, a talent development program consisting of a series of events, content creation, online learning and visibility opportunities for historically underrepresented and diverse talent.

BWA Studios is a Black female-owned animation house that creates and produces programming and content for all platforms. The studio consciously hires Black women, women of color and nonbinary people of color to build equity in the industry. In its five years in business, BWA has fast-tracked diversity in animation, already having met 20% of its hiring goal.

The studio has offered production services to leading entertainment companies including Hulu, Netflix, Mattel, A&E, Warner Bros. Discovery (HBO, TBS, TNT, TruTV), Paramount and more. BWA’s forte is training, developing and employing diverse talent, and its methodology empowers artists to create premium content and advance their careers.

“Our Equity Excelerator is a tested, multi-pronged approach at solving for the lack of inclusion of Black and diverse talent in animation,” says Taylor K. Shaw, BWA’s Founder & CEO. “We remain at the forefront of creating access, and we’re excited for the continued innovation and opportunity our commitment to championing new voices will bring with the Equity Excelerator and The Titmouse Foundation.”

Talent selected from the Equity Excelerator will be utilized to help support BWA Studios in its mission to continue telling meaningful stories within the branded content and advertising space.

“It’s about time to start helping more Black women get in the door within the animation industry, and hear their stories,” says Shannon Prynoski, President of The Titmouse Foundation. “I am excited to make this a reality with the visionary Taylor K. Shaw, and her leadership team Fatimah Abdullah and JLove Calderón.”

Founded in 2020, The Titmouse Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) public charity run by artists. Its goal is to share the growth and success of the Titmouse animation studio by providing opportunities for students who have been historically underrepresented.

Naïve, food-loving, boisterous and unabashed, Komodo is shipwrecked on an island guarded by a herd of over-enthusiastic miniature sheep. In search of food and warmth, Komodo systematically gets on the sheep’s nerves and proves to us, once again, that adventures sometimes lie where you least expect them. And as Komodo and the herd are as excessive and unstoppable as each other, they end up creating overwhelming catastrophes!

“This brand-new original creation is an important phase in our development strategy and we are thrilled to present this slapstick series to professionals at the Cartoon Forum. We really wanted to explore this genre but have been waiting for the project that we could take the first step with,” said Caroline Audebert, Managing Director of Ellipse Animation.

Komodo No Chill will enable us to renew the creativity of Ellipse Animation and continue our development strategy,” added Lila Hannou, VP Creative Development & Strategy at Ellipse Animation.

“This project, helmed by the talented Emmanuel Klotz (The Real Life of Teachers, Bionic Max, Ernest & Rebecca, Lascars the Movie) and Louis Musso (storyboard supervisor on Zig & Sharko, Mister Magoo, Karate Sheep, Lascars the Movie) seems to be the ideal way into this diversification … and humor. By combining adaptations and original creations, we are continuing to enhance our line-up to provide French and international audiences with a great diversity of programs and genres.”

The 78 x 7′ series’ creative team also includes artists Raphaël Chabassol and Thomas Digard.

    Star Trek: Lower Decks

The crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is ready for their next Starfleet mission in Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4, premiering on streaming platform Paramount+ with two brand-new episodes on Thursday, September 7. The S4 trailer and official key art dropped today, previewing what’s next for the adult animated comedy take on one of sci-fi’s most popular universes.

In Season 4, an unknown force is destroying starships and threatening galactic peace. Luckily, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos isn’t important enough for stuff like that! Instead, Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford and Provisional Ensign T’Lyn are keeping up with their Starfleet duties, avoiding malevolent computers and getting stuck in a couple caves — all while encountering new and classic aliens along the way.

The Starfleet crew residing in the “lower decks” of the U.S.S. Cerritos includes Ensign Beckett Mariner (voiced by Tawny Newsome), Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), Ensign Tendi (Noël Wells) and Ensign Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). The bridge crew includes Captain Carol Freeman (Dawnn Lewis), Commander Jack Ransom (Jerry O’Connell), Lieutenant Shaxs (Fred Tatasciore) and Doctor T’Ana (Gillian Vigman).

Created by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan (Rick and Morty, Solar Opposites), S4 of Star Trek: Lower Decks is produced by CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Secret Hideout’s Alex Kurtzman, Roddenberry Ent.’s Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth and 219 Productions’ Katie Krentz serve as executive producers alongside creator/showrunner McMahan. Aaron Baiers (Secret Hideout), who brought McMahan to the project, also serves as an executive producer. Emmy-winning independent animation production company Titmouse (Big Mouth) the serves as the animation studio for the series.

Star Trek: Lower Decks streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Latin America and is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution. In Canada, it airs on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel. The series will also be available to stream on Paramount+ in the UK, Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and South Korea later this year.
